What got you interested in learning Japanese? What are you going to do with this ability in the long run? And are you really evil?

When do u start learning japanese? How can u keep telling yourself that u can indeed master it? Not like me who failed miserably in learning japanese. :(
Also, hi. :glomp

Gold Knight: I started learning Japanese in my sophomore year in college, 2002. I started because I'd been into anime for YEARS (like, 8 at that point), I was sick of French, and suddenly there was a lightbulb...nay, atomic explosion, in my head, and I realized I COULD LEARN JAPANESE. I signed up and took to it immediately, but I've always been good at language. I don't really know if I'll ever do anything with it professionally, but learning it has always been a labor of love for me, and that's enough. And yes, I am ebil to the core.
Eileen: Hi! :glomp I don't believe I will ever truly master japanese, after watching my sensei (also an american guy) still work hard to learn new things after having studied for 10 years. But that's the fun part, I love learning new things and making new discoveries. Even now, I still notice things from old games I played/anime I watched and realized some hidden jokes or the meanings of things. I keep telling myself, "There's still more to learn", not "I can master this language!"
Chiru: Some people pick up on language more easily than others, but nothing will "come to you" unless you put work in.
It will be a while and take some real-life experience before your japanese will evolve beyond what you learned in the book. The more you use it, the more natural it will become, so make some japanese friends, read japanese sites and message boards (2ch.net), and make it yours!

That's a cool philosophy you have there, Hisshou.
New questions.
Do you practice Japanese with a good friend? Or family? Anybody in particular?
What other manga do you read / anime do you watch?
Do you enjoy video games very much? (Random, I know.)

Yeah, I'm pretty awesome. (If there were a Strong Bad smiley, it would go here)
New questions.

I practice japanese by myself mostly nowadays, listening to podcasts, reading out loud, and sometimes bsing with my friends who also study it.
I read Rave, FMA, Gantz, and Naruto. I think Rave's almost over though, I need to get the latest volumes. I'm also enthralled with Samurai Champloo because the art is very unique and cool, and I haven't read NEAR as much Kuromati High School as I'd like.
Yes. Yes I do. Two good, recent examples of how much video games are part of my life:
1) I hacked the firmware on my FREE IPOD (The link in my sig from NF was for real) to make everything green and insert Luigi graphics wherever they fit.
2) I'm sporting some nasty cuts on my knuckles from punching the shit out of my wall after the AI beat my ass in Soul Calibur 3 for the 8 millionth time.
started with the Atari 2600 when I was about 4. Haven't stopped since.

My questions hisshouBuraiKen
1.how long do you learn Japanese
2. What difficulties did you find in learning Jap??
3. Do you enjoy being a translator of japanese mangas??
Thanks, I'm in thye process of learning jap now, so pls assist me :)
HisshouBuraiKen

Bebong:
1) Coming up on 5 years since I started.
2) Doing my kanji homework. I didn't take kanji seriously until I went to Japan for the first time. My advice to you is never slack off in any one area! There are 5 parts of learning a foreidn language, and those are:
Reading, writing, speaking, listening, and thinking. Don't neglect any one area or you'll pay for it later :P
3) If I didn't, would I continue doing it for free every week? :) Yes, I enjoy it a lot. It's like when you see something funny on TV and HAVE to share it with everyone. Manga is like that for me, only when I translate people actually pay attention.

Hello hisshouburaiken
I believe you are the best translator that graced nfan forums
that's why I'd like to ask you is you could translate c247_p13 for there are a lot of debate about this page
a very accurate translation is required for the proof kabuto is a jinchuuriki could lie on that page :tem
I'm not hissho but this was my translation...
The one I did back in the day anyways before we knew about jinchuuriki
http://www.udanstraight.com/article.php?story=20050217093254811
Anyways--- here's what I wrote when I wrote it
And I'm sure it's correct (it could be reworded a bit better, but meh- this is how it is when I posted it....)
But for the most part it's correct and ya It's talking about Kabuto but not kabuto as a jinchuuriki but as a spy at orochimaru's place.
============start=============
そうか・・・
Ah, right...
おろち丸んとこにやったやつよりこっちが先か・・・うん
Before we go and get the guy that we have at Orochimaru's place, let's get this one first. Yeah...
Note "that guy" is refering to someone that they used their jutsu on at Orochimaru's place.
仕方無ぇだろうが・・・
That can't be helped
術をかけた後どうなるかなんて俺も知らん
I don't even know what will happen after I use my Jutsu.
その袋だけで大丈夫なのか?
You sure you'll be fine with just that bag?
相手は"人柱力"を使うんだぜ・・・
After all our opponet can use "Jinchuuriki"
*Note* It means power of human sacrifice, or so I think, /me thanks Kishimoto for the made up words. Anyways, When I thought about what that could mean, it hit me. He's obviously talking about Gaara, and the "sacrifice" that he can use, which is his mother that is in the sand that he uses as his weapon. Just my two cents on it, but I think it makes sense that way.
なんせ相手は・・・
any how, our opponet is

Thanks NTJ :)
but isn't a sentense missing?
the one in which deidara refers to a "traitor"
Well not really missing, when I posted that it was corrections of the chapter done by inane, so I only added things that were mistranslated...

相手は"人柱力"を使うんだぜ・・・
After all our opponet can use "Jinchuuriki"
*Note* It means power of human sacrifice, or so I think, /me thanks Kishimoto for the made up words. This looks like a semi-good place for me to mention it, but about a couple months ago it occurred to me that 人柱力 "jinchuuriki" is probably based off of the word 神通力 "jintsuuriki" (also "jinzuuriki"), which basically means "supernatural power" (a somewhat more literal translation of the characters may be "power granted through the gods").
However, I still think the choice of changing of the first two characters to 人柱 "hitobashira" (read as "jinchuu" using on-yomi) is meant to represent "human sacrifice" in a more metaphorical sense. That is Gaara, from his very birth, was treated not as a human but as a weapon, and thus his "life" was "sacrificed". At least that's how I see it...

Zenith: Yep, I've read the whole series, although it looks like it's just about over now (Haru and Lucia are having their final battle as we speak). I bought everything up to volume 34 while I was in japan, and now I get it from amazon.co.jp.
Kabuto: Why thank you!
I agree with what NHG has said on the significance of 人柱 being read as jinchuu instead of hitobashira. Where I think the 力 (power) comes in refers not to the demon's abilities itself, but more of the idea that the village wanted to harness it. Therefore, the long interperetation of Jinchuuriki was "A human who was sacrificed so that others could gain power", where the "others" would be the hidden village/ninja community who provided the vessel.
Also, I can't really "translate" something that's already in english. I'm out of town, so I don't have access to the raw chapter. I think I can remember the missing lines, though.
Deidara:
Oh yeah...
We should take care of business here before we go after the guy at Orochimaru's...
Since he shit his pants and leaked information about us...
Sasori:
I did everything I could...
But even I can't be sure exactly what will happen when I use my jutsu.
(reading this, I think you may be right about the "amnesia" jutsu, NHG)
You sure you can manage with just that bag?
After all, our opponent uses the Jinchuuriki.
(This could refer to either the sand village itself using Gaara, who can fully control Shukaku, or Gaara himself. This'd mean that "Jinchuuriki" can be used to refer to the demon and its powers itself, or the host human).
Deidara:
All of my jutsu are artistic, but I prepared my specialty for this.
The target is...

Sometimes I think Viz has it easy, because they know what happens so they can avoid controversial stuff like that.
That was single-handedly the most confusing page I have ever read in any Naruto chapter. I hadn't thought about it in relation to Kabuto at all until now, but yeah, it makes so much more sense now. Thanks for bringing it up, Yakushi Kabuto.

happy new year Hisshou... btw do you read D.gray-man ? I was thinking it would be awesome if you'd take time to translate a chapter of that series as well, it's quite good.

I think Viz has it easy because they just do a terrible job and don't stop to think about preserving the original spirit of the series.
I do not read D-Gray man, but I'd be more than happy to if you point me to somewhere where I can download the entire thing :)
Gold Knight
January 09, 2006, 05:41 PM
D. Gray Man can be downloaded at StopTazmo.com - it's pretty good, I recommend it.
And I have to say I agree with you, though they have had their moments, Viz does a shoddy job of staying true to the characters' original dialogue. The English dub is doing a much better job of that.

I want to see Sai die a terrible death because I hate him, and hopefully see them explore some of the other characters a little more. They could take a cure from the anime fillers and had Naruto, Sakura & Kakashi team up with the other ex-Genins for some badass A-Rank missions & explore their characters a bit more.
GK: I was in Japan for all of last year as a JET. Taylor and I hung out and played video games, it was fun. His daughter's the cutest!
I assume the Simpsons thing was rhetorical. I'm one of those Simpsons trivia freaks who knows like everything about the series ( a while back I wrote a simpsons trivia flash game, it's up on Newgrounds.) ONE of my favorites is the Beer Baron.

Nova: Thanks!
I'd like to see more of how the characters have evolved since the time skip. What kind of relationship do Sakura and Ino have? Are Shikamaru and Temari friends or flirtatious or what? What's the status of the Hyuuga family? What kind of training has everyone undergone (same goes for Naruto & Sakura)? What will everyones reaction be when they see Naruto in action? What will Naruto's reaction be to all of THEM?

Everyone: You're welcome.
NeoShweaty: JET pays about 30k/year in us dollars. Depending on how you spend you money, you can easily bankroll half of that your first year. Depending on the prefecture you'll get some, none, or all of your rent paid for. It's a sweet deal and a great experience; if you've got nothing really tying you to your home country it's the perfect post-college job. I'll give more detail after UFC is over :D

It's not hard, but you're not a lock just by applying. You need to write a good essay for your application and be honest and enthusiastic about teaching english during the interview. That's the important part; you make them believe that you want to be an ENGLISH teacher and help bridge the culture gap between Japan and your native country. Stuff like, how you love japanese culture and want to create the same kind of interest in your own culture in them. It doesn't necessarily have to be TRUE, but that's the impression you want to give :D

i hope i can learn japanese someday. i can't learn it in highschool(GRR!)
but i bet in ten years or so it'll be one of the popular languages to learn, like french and spanish.
HisshouBuraiKen
September 28, 2006, 09:09 AM
Possibly. It's pretty amazing to see how popular it's become; I was one of those buys back in '93 who was into anime and japan before it was mainstream. For a guy who grew up watching DBZ and Sailor Moon at 6am sunday morning, who pretty much single-handedly got half his high school into anime, seeing so many people contributing translations and wanting to learn still astounds me. I really never thought I'd see the day, let alone find conventions where I could dress up as my favorite characters and get my picture taken XD
GK: Clearly I think Hidan is fucking awesome, and Kakuzu is not far behind. Their interactions are the most entertaining part of Naruto and a lot more fun to watch than Orochimaru/Kabuto, Sasori/Deidara and even Deidara/Toby. As my new sig shows, Hidan's
Open shirt
Gold chain
Slicked-back hair
Religiousness
Short temper, and
bad attitude
point to him being Italian, which I am as well (hereditarily, anyways). The motherfucker's so badass he makes me want to LEARN Italian just because I THINK he MIGHT be Italian. JESUCRISTO!

I have cosplayed several times: As Kuwabara from YYH, Billy Coen from Resident Evil 0, Kurow from Rival Schools: Project Justice, and most recently as Kisame.
It's so much fun working on the costumes and taking pictures with other people. Everyone who goes to a convention should try it at least once.

How long did it take you to create your Kisame costume, samehada included? Which character that you have cosplayed is your favorite among them? Which do you think is your best cosplay? I saw in the first page that you read RAVE. Do you also read Hiro Mashima's latest manga, Fairy Tail?

It all took a couple months, though I didn't work on it regularly until the last 3 weeks or so. The Samehada was pretty easy to make, it's just 3 styrofoam blocks with a hole drilled through the centers. Don't let that fool you though, it's still heavy when you're holding it by the bottom of the handle. There were a couple shoots where I didn't think I'd make it :P
I have not read Fairy Tail yet. I kinda got tired of RAVE towards the end because it got repetitive, but I'd read another of Mashima's manga if it doesn't follow the same kinda formula. Is it good?

HisshouBuraiKen

My favorite Japanese food...hoo boy...
For a full meal, I'd go with the curry rice at CoCo Ichiban. Just...droolage. Pure droolage.
For snack food, I can't resist "Kasugai Peanut and You" - they're peanuts with the skin partially dipped in this yummy batter stuff. Also comes in pea and wasabi pea.
A good place to visit in Saitama is Kawagoe-shi, which is nicknamed "Little Edo". They have a great free bus tour of some neat old temples and shopping districts. Oomiya also has a nice covered outdoor shopping area near the station that's similar to (if much smaller than) Kyoto's Shijou.

What are your opnions on Hibiki Dan's skillz (and his pink judo-gi......)

Aah, one of my favorite questions.
First of all, Dan rules. The best part about him is the more Japanese you learn, the funnier he gets.
There are two possble ways to translate HisshouBuraiKen. I will present them both, but let it be known that I believe the SECOND translation is the more appropriate.
Hisshou Burai Ken 必勝 無頼 拳
"Certain Victory" "Bandit/Villain" "Fist"
OR (Preferred)
Hisshou Bu Rai Ken 必勝 無 頼 拳
"Certain Victory" "Without" "Trust/Reliance" "Fist"
Put 'em all together and you get:
"Complete and Total Victory Relying on Nobody but Myself-Fist"
It's my name on every forum I'm a member of.

So Dan's like ummmmmm ....multi layered puzzle, and Japanese is the pieces to see him as a whole (the more pieces you have, the better you get the picture), that's interesting alright
And Hissouburai-ken is a name of style or discipline
"Complete and Total Victory Relying on Nobody but Myself-Fist" that's pretty baddass......i think...
You made the right decision using the japanese rather than the english
Is that Dan's style/discipline??
Have you ever beat Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter. or Street fighter Alpha 3 in the hardest mode using Dan only? (without continue)

Dan's discipline is "Saikyou-ryuu", which means, "The strongest style".

Probably. I've definitely done it in the Vs. games with all Dan teams. A triple HisshouBuraiKen is a sight to behold.

No. I can't find the goddamned thing anywhere!!! However, I HAVE played it, and it's really fun. I've got an extra set of controllers and the DBZ game, just no system to play them on :(

Okay, I finally figured this one out. My top 3 ultimate costumes are, in order:

3) Voodoo Hidan.
Honorable mention goes to Janemba (Final Form) from DBZ Movie 12.

Hello there. I just have a few simple questions:
1- Japanese adjectives are created by adding ,,no" to nouns, but not always. Is there any rule on when a word works for both noun and adjective and when you have to add ,,no"?
2- More concret: If I want to say ,,Golden Alchemist" then is it ,,Kin Renkinjutsushi" or ,,Kin-no Renkinjutsushi?"
3- Oh, and how do you form comperative and superlativ?
I would be very grateful if you could help me. Thanks in advance.

I've heard some really good things about Wii sports, Zelda and especially Wario Ware are really great, less about DBZ. But I'm sure a DBZ game can never suck (forgetting some of the Snes ones). What' I'm really looking forward to Super Smash Bros. Brawl, hopefully I'll be able to get my claws on a Wii before its release date.

A friend of mine dressed as Ippo for Otakon last year and that was enough to get me to watch a couple eps of the anime. It was supposed to be the first episodes but it ended up being the whole Date fight, which is apparently one of the most important fights in the series.
I haven't watched any more of the anime or read any of the manga but it looked pretty cool.

Right I have a question. Is Japanese a hard language to learn? (I mean harder than most other languages) I have spoken to many people who think that it is one of the hardest languages to learn, my friend even states that you're average Japanese person would have trouble speaking to someone from a higher born class because the language style (sorry can't think of the right terminology here) is so very different.
HisshouBuraiKen
May 25, 2007, 10:21 AM
I found japanese to be very very easy to pick up, but I have a knack for learning languages. It really depends on how passionate you are about learning - the more you want to, and the more you practice, the easier it is.
So hey, I have a paid project now! bludshock commissioned me to translate Our Hero Studies (http://mangahelpers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=13055), the new comedy manga in weekly shounen jump. It's really funny, if you like stuff like GTO you'll like this too. Check it out! Chapter 2 is being cleaned/edited/typeset right now, and he's doing a great job of HQing it up and editing the SFX to be in english instead of just little side notes, which aren't nearly as fun :turtle

Thread revival!
DB - Working with DB is not the horrible onslaught of cruel deception and racist rants that the trolls and special messages would have you believe. In general, pretty much everyone is cool to talk to and easy to work with. Not everyone on staff thinks it's all funny, either, but we all get our turn so it's only fair. The "Dear Bounto, We are very sorry, please come back" was mine, for example :tem
I must also admit to having the same sense of humor as timecop (to a point), so at least for me, it's no problem at all. The staff channel is not always for the faint of heart, thin of skin, or weak of butt, but I've had a good tenure there so far and I feel like I've helped make a difference in the quality and efficiency of Naruto and Bleach.
Of course, I'm just one link in the chain, and everyone else does a great job too. I may not see eye-to-eye on everything with everyone every time, but what're you gonna do?
Also, with the usual translator in the middle of moving to Japan, last week I did the ENTIRE translations for both Bleach and Naruto. I'm quite proud of how they came out :)
Animals - I only hate them when they're living under the same roof as me. If it's someone else's, I'm indifferent. But I've got about 5 excuses in reserve as to why my wife can't have a cat yet.
Japanese - Take college courses and don't say anything you've picked up from a manga or anime that's not "Konnichiwa" or "Itadakimasu".
GGpX
September 04, 2007, 01:35 PM
Yeah, but timecop often talks out of his ass. Especially when it comes to stuff where he has absolutely no clue what he is talking about. I had read a few logs where he's the center-piece of the convo and saw him once in #kickassanime , and jeez, he was pretty "special" let's just say. :p He really left a very bad impression.
I had talked with interactlii (sp) once before, cool guy.
And I like the DB YHBT stuff. I love trolling people and getting reactions out of them. It's a pure thrill.
Anyway, have a good one.

I'd just like to say first off that I love your translations becasue as you said in the first post of this thread, they sound very natural. Whenever I read a manga that has an awkward phrase in I just think "Doh! That just ruins the continuity and flow of the chapter/episode." Never happens with your stuff though.
I've got two or more questions, one that pertains to you and another one about a technical issue with the Dattebayo website.
First off, what prompted you to start learning Japanese? I've heard that it's easier to learn since there are like three different dialects or something along those lines. Also have you ever considered setting your Japanese to work within the Navy? How long have you been at the Navy?
And the dattebayo question is I can't connect to the website. Does this mean I was banned? Or is there a server move/check going on? Thanks for your time reading over these and thank you for providing excellent translations weekly!

September 21, 2007, 09:37 AM
Re: DB - Filipino thing. I don't really have a position. I didn't put the link up and I didn't know it was going up. I think it's so ridiculously racist and ignorant that it makes fun of itself, and there's no need for anyone to get worked up about it.
The problem with racial humor is that it's easy to fall into hypocrisy. I can't laugh at a black joke and then get offended at an Italian one without contradicting myself. In the case of that link, it's meant to be more of a "shock and offend" thing than a joke, I would just shake my head and move on if I were you.
GameFAQs - Haha, I always meant to go back and expand on that but I never got around to it...maybe if Luigi really rocks the house in Brawl I'll be inspired to do one for that game instead.
YYH - Eh...I love Yuusuke & co. but I've got so much to do nowadays...I wish someone would just be like, "I'm hiring you to do YYH here's your money, get it done in two months." I'd be down with that :D But it will probably get done eventually, before Viz, one way or the other XD

Besides, I like having 50,000 projects. It's fun. Sure, overall the projects go slow, but I don't care. I don't do scanlations for the leechers and downloaders. I do it because I enjoy it. :)

I started with "Yookoso". It was decent, but I'd recommend you find a good teacher over a good book. My first japanese teacher was excellent, he pushed us hard and after one semester I knew all my hiragana and katakana, basic sentence structure, a little culture and more than a few words. After two semesters I would've been able to pass the JLPT level 4.
So yeah, ask around, read reviews and whatnot.

I'd never even heard of that guy. I was just going by the kana and pronunciation. Thanks for the heads up, I'll have to look through my old books again and see if there's an official romanization, and whether or not they match.

Well, I would like to know what you would recommend me to speed up the learning process. I'm studiying japenese, my problem is not talking in japanese, the fact is that Japanese born as talking language, which is true because I'm learning reallt fast to speak it, specially because I speak spanish and is easier for me since in term of pronunciations and acents is spanish is closer than english is towards japanese. My problem is writing and reading, which alphabet do you recommend me to learn:
Kanji, Hiragana or Kana?
I would like to get into translating (well) as soon as it be possible.

c2k - I didn't see anything in the volumes, but the perfect guidebook 2 does indeed put the extra "h" in there. So well done (it doesn't change the pronunciation of the name or anything but I'll start putting it in from now on.
Alterno - First of all, you need to realize that it's not going to be quick - "soon" is going to be defined in years, not months.
Second, you need to learn all three, but obviously start with hiragana and katakana. With a lot of study you can learn them both in about 3 weeks, and reading them should be second nature after about 3-4 months. Also, FOLLOWING THE STROKE ORDER IS CRUCIAL!
Finally, you need to get a feel for the flow if dialogue and how to write it, not just going from bubble to bubble and translating what's there. That includes sometimes writing english that conveys the "emotion" of a sentence (i.e. surprise, disappointment, anger) rather than the literal meaning, while remaining true to the character and their personality.
Xiphias - I'm enjoying Shion more than I thought I would, but it may just be because I'm getting to learn about Shogi terms :) I'm interested in seeing how the murder mystery is unraveled and watching the characters mature.
Shion, Queen and Carrera are kind of interesting to me because I haven't read much "real-world" type manga, so it's been a new experience for me. Agharta confuses the fuck out of me, though. I read the older chapters in preparation for translating the one you asked for and I think a physical question mark formed over my head for a few minutes ;D
There's no one book I can really recommend to a new student of Japanese - I'd advise you to just absorb as much as you can from whatever textbook you're assigned. If you've got a choice, pick a professor with a reputation for working their students extra hard, it will be worth it.
Oh, and practice your kana by writing each one 50 times and saying the sound out as you write. E.g. Write あ, say "Ah"
Again, FOLLOWING THE STROKE ORDER IS CRUCIAL!
Since you're here, do you plan on continuing all the series you've started or seeing which ones garner the most interest and then just scan those? I've noticed you started discussion threads for them, you gotta advertise those when you put the releases out :ossu

HisshouBuraiKen - I'm going to keep doing Shion till I run out of raws (I personally wanna see how the mystery ends also). Queen there is a high chance that I'll continue till I run out of raws (My friend keeps bugging me about it). I'm just checking out Carrera and if it interesting I'll continue it also.
Sadly I only have raws to Shion for 3 more volumes. Which is the main reason I'm releasing so slow (Carrera I only have 3 or 4 volumes total). That and I also have two or three people other then myself proofread the translation usually.

Thanks Hisshou.
Have you bought the perferct guide book, or downloaded it? Because here, where i live, they do not sell these. I looked all over here, but none was found. If you downloaded, could you share the links, because i did not found they at internet either. I mean, a english version, because a japonese version and none to me is the same.

I haven't seen the Guidebooks available over here, but I don't spend much time in the manga sections at bookstores anyway :P All the manga I have on my computer/backup discs is in Japanese, which is a pain when I wanna show someone a new series!
Moving on....
What a great vacation. No jump for another week! Plenty of time to finish up stuff for Xiph and knock out a YYH or two. Gotta keep up the pace! Must move forward, not backward, upward not forward, and always twirling, twirling, twirling towards freedom!

HisshouBuraiKen, I have a request to make to you. I am a huge Fullmetal Alchemist fan, and by the looks of it, I think you are the only one that translates Fullmetal Alchemist (or am I mistaken? XD). I am always reading your monthly translations. That's not all, though, as I use your translation to make my portuguese scanlation (with your permission, I talked to you some months ago). But that's not what I want to say. I have a big request that has nothing to do with the monthly chapters.
Do you know the FMA Omakes? I think Arakawa made a lot of them, and I never saw some of them translated in english! Volume 12, 13, 14, 15, 16 and 17's omakes aren't translated (and volume 18's, too, but I don't know if it has come to internet by now). Did you understand what I want?
Can you please translate these omakes? I looked all over the internet, used Google months, and found nothing. If you want, I have all of them (in japanese, yet) here in my pc, and I can upload them all.
I am waiting for your answer ^^
And don't worry about time, I am waiting for them for longs months, if you wish to take this job, you can take as long as you want =)

Hi there, Hisshou, i would like to thank you for all your goor work in Naruto, FMA & YuYu Hakusho... Your translations are nice and fast, and i appreciate them a lot, this way i don't have to wait like a million years to have this manga translated in my country (here in Brazil they are publishing vol. 9, i think so!!!).
I always as myself how do you get time to do your trans so fast if you work and you are married, because your free time must be really short. I work 8h a day, meanwhile I am working on my Master's degree tonight (~4h) and I don't have time to do half of the things i like. I am even scared when i think i'll get married next year!!! :-P hehhehe!!!
Thanks a lot and keep up your good work as long as you can!!!

Well, for the paid stuff, I usually work on it late at night or over the weekend. Same for the "Whenever I have time" stuff like YYH. As for the weekly stuff? Well, I just make time. I do them during work when they first come out and make up the time by working through lunch or staying a little later. Then again, people who smoke take like 10 breaks a day so if I waste 3 hours a week translating I'm still not as bad as them :D So I don't feel too bad.
If it makes you feel any better, there's a LOT of stuff I'd like to do that I don't have time for. But that's life I guess - no sense in lamenting it (you just waste more time!)
By the way, if you're Brazilian do you watch the Dattebayo PT-BR subs?

Good to see there are people like us who usually don't have the time to do what they like. I wanted to study some language other than english: i tried german, french, and now i'm willing to learn japanese; i wish i am able to learn one of the three (or all of them) after my Master's degree thesis.
I also think there's no use to complain about life, i mean, i'm healthy, i have family and friends, things will come with time. it's just nice to talk this away with new people - like i do in this forum.
About Dattebayo BR fansubs i LOVE them!!! it was my 'religion' to download every friday the latest episode of naruto!!! nowadays i don't watch so regularly, but whenever i get the chance i watch their subbed episodes. You make the trans from japanese to english released in american dattebayo, huh? i always see your names in the credits... what i just hate are the people who curse and tell bad names to dattetabyo's stuff (both en-us and pt-br)!!! i mean, these guys do it for free, release the episodes on the web for no fee and still people want things as fast as lightspeed like they were paid or sth else... just nasty.

Superbowl party at my place!
Just so you know, I was excited about the Giants winning that game too. Just couldn't have ended any better. I can't really cheer too much in my thread because so many Patriots fans are in the Meet the Mods forum but I guess I can cheer all I want here huh?
So tell me, did ya ever really expect the Giants to get that far this year? Has your opinion changed at all on any of the players on the team, and the coach? I have to admit, I was SO skeptical when Coughlin said he had changed and people were saying he was more gentle and friendly but well, can't argue with the results this year.
And Eli winning the Super Bowl after his older brother did ... that's just wild, man.
Do you ever get tired of watching the Eli to Tyree catch, too? Do you have a name for that play? I think they're still trying to figure out a name for that play...
But anybody but Brady, anybody. :D
HisshouBuraiKen
February 26, 2008, 11:14 AM
kyubisharingan - If you're just starting out, don't jump into complex stuff like news, variety shows and TV dramas. Start out with easier stuff like kids shows, and work your way up. It all comes with practice, but if you can somehow get a transcription of what you're listening to (maybe podcasts? simple songs?) it'll be a tremendous help.
GK - You may cheer here all the way until November :D I just got a nice new laptop with a 17" WUXGA screen (yeah dell warranty!) and have been meaning to watch the whole game again in its entirety.
Wikipedia lists the following names that have been used:
* "David and Eliath"
* "Double Miracle"
* "Catch 42"
* "The Play"
* "The Great Escape"
* "Flee to Tyree"
* "Slip and Grip"
* "Hail Manning"
* "The Helmet Catch"
* "The Desert Miracle"
I'm partial to "Hail Manning" and "Flee to Tyree" myself :turtle
One of the biggest shocks of the postseason has been seeing Coughlin not looking exasperated XD I never gave them much of a shot, so each week it was just like, "Wow, awesome, I get to see them play one more time." Also, I broke something when Tynnes missed that second FG against the Packers :P
But mainly I would say that the last 4 games showed what the Giants were really capable of. It sounds cliche, but it really felt like, starting with Week 17, you were watching Eli transform. Something about that first game against the Pats changed him. If they can beef up the secondary and keep the front four healthy, their D will be unstoppable. Watching Brady get creamed never got old, and seeing Peyton cheering was strangely epic.
Oh, after it was all over, I stumbled outside (fairly drunk) and saw my neighbor wearing a giants shirt with a beer in one hand and fireworks in the other. It was an awesome, "Hey, you're a Giants fan! WHOOOOOOOOOWEDIDIIIIIIIIIIIIIIT" kinda moment.

I'll probably only cheer until August if that's all right with you. Then I gotta start cheering for my own team again! XD Enjoy your new laptop in the meanwhile. How are you watching the game again BTW?
I've heard "David and Eliath" and "Hail Manning" before but not the others you've listed. Figures there'd be a lot of names. Too bad "The Catch" was already taken, they could always give a sequel to it though. I know Tyree said that he liked "David and Eliath" the most. Ha...
Hopefully it wasn't anything precious you broke when Tynes missed that second FG. Thank goodness for Favre's tendency to throw interceptions in playoffs overtime, eh?
Yeah, I agree with you. Every game in the playoffs it seemed to me as if the Giants were playing like they really wanted to win, too. You compare them with the Buccaneers and Cowboys for example, and it always seemed like the other team had more things on their mind than just winning. Maybe they all felt like they had no chance against the Patriots in the end anyways. I think that's what makes the Giants a real championship team, they always felt like they had a chance and played like it. That was the best Super Bowl I've watched in quite a while.
Awesome on your neighbor being a Giants fan too. XD Guess he'll be invited to all your future NFL-related parties from now on, eh?

Titans. And if they're out of it, Colts, since Peyton Manning's from my college and I've watched him longer than I did the Titans (well, they weren't here when he played in college.) I hate that they're in the same division.
When Peyton's retired though, I won't care about the Colts anymore.

Hey Hisshou, I'm a kind of new japanese student (just finished JPN102 at my college) and I was wondering what you think about Rosetta Stone. I don't like how it uses extremely old pictures and that it doesn't tell you what words mean but when I use it and come across words I don't know I look them up and so far doing that I've memorized a couple new vocabulary words. Do you know of any other good programs or anything else to help? I barely know any kanji yet and I've been going around 2ch and various other japanese websites trying to read some things, as well as "reading" manga with furigana (which has helped my reading of hiragana and katakana tremendously) but still my problem is just understanding stuff. I hope sometime in 2009 maybe I can take JLPT level 4.
Thanks :)
HisshouBuraiKen
March 21, 2008, 07:59 AM
Emily - I can't really speak to the Rosetta Stone's effectiveness, having never used it or even seen it in action. Since you're very early in your studies, reading stuff like 2ch and manga may teach you some new vocab, but I don't think it'll be very helpful in improving your overall reading comprehension as there will be a lot of grammar patterns you won't be able to make sense of.
At this point I think you'd benefit most from reading ahead in your textbook (after you've mastered the stuff you've already studied, of course!) and possibly getting the 201-202 book as well and going through it.
You'll also want to study your radicals (bushu) before you begin trying to learn all the kanji - it will make learning kanji much easier.
Talk to your sensei and see if he/she can give you some suggestions and materials for learning over the summer. Where do you go to college, BTW?
In other news, I have a funny story - Kylara refused to call her bookstore to ask about the latest issue of jump (They know my voice!) so I called on her behalf. Much to my surprise, the clerk answered in Japanese. Since I don't get to speak Japanese regularly nowadays, it took me a couple seconds to get my brain into "Jap-Mode" and start talking to her.
After learning it wouldn't be in until tomorrow and hanging up, I though to myself, "Why the shit WOULDN'T THEY SPEAK JAPANESE WHEN IT'S A GODDAMNED JAPANESE BOOKSTORE."
Me so smart.

I do not know if you are currently willing to translate other series other then the one(s) you are working on now, but if you are I have a request for you. I represent a new group called Fighting Dreamers Scanlations we were on a verge of our first release and were fine tuning the translation when we lost contact with our translator. We have two projects currently, the one in need of a translator is Shadow Skill Invincibility Fire Ball. (We plan to do at least the 1st volume.) I do not want to purchase anymore raws for more volumes unless I Either get a good deal on a hard to find tank, or it seems we will be ready to continue with scanlating more manga. Please let me know if you are interested in this project.
Here is a quote about Shadow Skill Invincibility Fire Ball from wikipedia
Shadow Skill (シャドウスキル-影技-), is a manga series with anime adaptations, created by Studio Deen and aired on Japanese Television in 1998, and has been released in the United States by ADV Films in 2005. The series is based on the manga by Megumu Okada. A shonen series, it features a lot of combat, especially martial arts.
The main protagonists of Shadow Skill are Elle Ragu, the 59th Sevalle in the kingdom of Kuruda, and Gau Ban, an orphaned boy that Elle takes up as her adopted brother. He is currently a Valle and is improving his training. Gau is so impressed by Elle's fighting skill, and the stories of Kuruda's greatest fighter Scarface, that he is studying Elle's fighting skills so that one day he would become the greatest Sevalle in Kuruda. But before that, they must face demon beasts, spies, and Elle's debts from drinking, and collateral damage from fighting.
Also in Elle and Gau's life is Faury Maya (Folli Maya in the TV series), a Sui Rame talisman sorceress, and Kyou Ryu, a Septia beastcatcher and niece of Iba Stora, the king of Kuruda.
It is a fighting/action manga.

why do you so strongly feel stroke order is crucial? doesn't that only matter if you're aiming for the kanken, which no one really needs to take anyway?

The reasons are threefold - Mainly, because it really does make a difference. My penmanship is shitty anyways, but using the right stroke order has helped my kana and kanji look better.
Second, it's more "Japanese" - they beat the stroke order into kids' brains pretty hard from what I've been taught (and somehow my first sensei always knew when I fudged on them)
Finally, you may WANT to take the kanken one day, and you'll already be a leg up! :D

You da man HBK! Can you translate the whole Berserk series again for me? Not :p
I have a question though: How long do you think it would take me learn jap to a decent level (that is, to understand the usual everyday crap) if I studied (by myself) 1 hour a day? [Shameless boast mode ON] I've started like a month ago with this method and I recognize several words and understand some short sentences when I'm watching anime(even though they talk so fast sometimes), and when I'm translating from english to spanish I can now translate some pages directly from the raw. Maybe it's easier for me because I know a foreign language already, I read somewhere that people who know several languages have certain parts of the brain more developed(bs probably).[Shameless boast mode OFF]
If you give me an answer like "I don't know you, but probably 5 years" I'll stop studing jap. Seriously. Lack of motivation is my karma, so lie if you have to.

There really is no way to tell every time, but you can learn the most common names and assume them when you read. Even japanese people usually have to ask how to read someone's name when they're given a business card - they usually write it on the card once they're told. On the web, I just use the rikaichan plugin for firefox - hit shift while you're moused over a kanji and it'll go to the kanji breakdown, including nanori pronunciations.
Any electronic dictionary should give the nanori for each kanji as well. But yeah, as far as knowing which specific name it is every time? I don't think know of any way.
Remember in Bleach when Ichigo saw Ishida Uryuu's name on the board and was like "...Ama..tatsu?" (雨竜)

http://www.cosplay.com/gallery/m424/
Relic - You can install the language bar and a japanese keyboard for windows XP no matter what version you have.
Also, that "color" is the color used for me in translation compilations and stuff, it's not official. Green is just my favorite color :)

I have simple question concerning the translation of "It can't be helped".
What is the difference between the two possible translations 'Katanai wa ne' and 'Shita ga nai'? I have a pretty good idea, but I want to confirm it.

will you still translate Naruto now that Binktopia has dropped it?
and also, if you dont mind me asking, how far are you with the Golden Sun manga translations? It doesnt matter though, as long as you finish before summer is over. :)
edit:
you already answered my above questions so i have one more:
do you get a lot of requests to translate?

Kieru: I assume you meant "Shikata nai wa ne" for the first one. There is no difference between the two, meaning-wise. They're two different ways to say the same thing, the first one is a little more feminine (the "wa" ending) and the second, a little more formal (the "ga" being included).
shuraii: I get a fair amount - most of them I have to turn down as I'm satisfied with my current workload. That's the main reason I do commissions - it's just not worth the time spent otherwise, plus they're always for stuff I never would have done of my own free will.
Speaking of my workload, there's just four three TWO more chapters of Yuu Yuu Hakusho to go! They're all good ones, too, and as I finish out the volume I have less and less unfinished stuff to read while I'm on the throne, so I've got a lot of the good lines already planned out. I hope to have it all done in the next month.

Thanks for the tip on the firefox add-on, till now i was just tryng with NJStar Communicator.. which i will still maintain because it has chinese support :D
And i'm not sure if i have said this before but:
Thanks for your translation work.. i'm using some of your translations to turn them into spanish.. i give credit tho...
Thanks again ^___^

I would highly value your recommendation, because I'm in desperate need of something new (preferably a model where the dictionaries and/or firmware can be updated?)

I have simple question concerning the translation of "It can't be helped".
What is the difference between the two possible translations 'Katanai wa ne' and 'Shita ga nai'? I have a pretty good idea, but I want to confirm it.
Figuratively, they mean about the same thing. Literally, "Katanai wa ne" is, "Can't win, huh? (with a feminine speech-ending)" as in "You can't win, can you? (or I can't win, can I?)" denotative of defeat. "Shikata ga nai" means "It can't be helped," leaning more towards resignation to a situation that one has no control over. Either way, they're phrases indicating resignation or giving up to the circumstances.
Hope this helps!

Hey Hisshou! I'm studying Japanese and was wondering if you know any good dictionaries to use. I have the Oxford Starter dictionary, but I really want one that's more comprehensive. Do you know of any good dictionaries that would be considered more advanced?

Thanks for the thanks everyone! Remember, you can help me out by telling crunchyroll how great Eyeshield is coming out XD
CandySlush - You can still read my work by downloading JapFlap (http://japflap.com) HQ scans every week :ossu
Leonsagara - To be honest, I've been using the same electronic dictionary combined with dic.yahoo.co.jp, zokugo-dict.com, google, and EDICT (jdic.com) for years. You could also try Kanji Sono Mama Rakubiki Jiten for Nintendo DS if you're looking for a cheap alternative to a dedicated electronic dict.

hi XD
im new here so pls dont mind me >.<
ok back to business
im here to ask about the raw manga infor
i notice that some raw manga like skip beat have Hiragana beside the every Kanjn character while other manga dont
so i was wondering if anyone can explain to me why some manga has it while others dont?
And how do you tell the differences between them when you are buying it in the shop?
Im current trying to learn japanese so it would be easily if there is Hiragana beside the Kanjn character to help me read it
Is there any interesting manga that you would recommend me to read to improve my japanese?

No. I have long since ceased taking any requests for translations, especially of new serieses. I might translate a one-shot or silly picture if I find it sufficiently funny or clever.
In other news, I got myself set up with the hard-drive loader for Wii and god DAMN are my games loading faster now. This must've been what it was like for original Xbox owners.
Now to hack the crap out of the system menu until it's sufficiently green and black.

Yep, still enjoying it, although I'm gonna be wrapping up Eyeshield soon (hopefully before Otakon). Might have some manga stuff in the pipeline :D - stay tuned!
I have never had any problems playing Wii. No flying Wiimotes, no broken TVs, no Wii Tennis elbow, nada. My system menu has also been hacked and has a nice black theme going now.

Fuck if I know, I haven't spoken to any of them in months. They're free to use my translation, go ask them.
Anyways, I know it's been a while, and hopefully the new group i'm working with will provide extra early raws for a long time. I got tired of the whole "race to be first" thing and this month in particular was crazy for me which is why I missed FMA for the first time in three and a half years. You can ALWAYS read my translations for Naruto in HQ by downloading JapFlap's releases here at MH or their site, www.japflap.com, or the weekly ones now at mangastream.com (whom I'm trying to convince to upload to MH as well)

I was wondering if you're planning on picking some new series up once FMA ends. If yes, I would humbly suggest Gintama which unfortunately currently isn't being translated (it is translated to 302nd chapter but translations can't be used since 296th chapter and all in all things are a bit complicated (http://community.livejournal.com/gintama/898651.html#cutid1)). Why Gintama? Well, IMO it is the best shounen there is (along with FMA and GTO), it has awesome fights, genius characters (to be honest, I consider it the strongest point of the manga) and really hilarious moments. But the best part is that even after 300 chapters it didn't jump the shark like Bleach/Naruto/One Piece did (of course IMO) but it's even better. Probably you won't have time to spend on a series you don't know but it was worth a try. Anyway, thanks for all these years you've translated FMA.

When I was a child, I knew konan. I did not know him very much at that time. Later something happened on me, and I liked him very much. however I just saw its animation in Chinese. After I entering the college, I owned a computer, and all I have touched was animation in Japanese. I found that Japanese is a very beautiful language and I became crazy to learn it. These two years, I learned Japanese in the library almost everyday and I also made Japanese friends in my school. Now it is not difficult for me to communicate with them. My major is English, so I know that listenning and speaking are very important if someone wants to learn a language well. Watching animation from Japan and communicating with Japanese friends are two joys in my life. Here I found you, and I think maybe we niteimasu. I hope I can be one of your friends.

Hi guys! Answers to latest questions:
Goral - Gintama is not gonna happen :P I honestly don't know what I will fan-translate if anything now that FMA has ended and Dattebayo has dropped Bleach. I will probably ride the mangastream Naruto gig until the series ends. I am trying to transition to more pro work TBH.
jmangeo - You're welcome, and no habla español :P
iceland - I translate fast because I translate as I read, then go back and correct stuff I got wrong because I didn't know the whole plot of the chapter, so I basically just do one read-through and one edit. And yes, I know myself very well :D
Wing - My favorite manga? That's a tough one. Naruto, FMA, Kaiji, anything by Fujisawa Tooru, the list goes on.
I think my next projects may be building a new DDR pad, bookcase and end table. Not necessarily in that order.

Hi there HisshouBuraiKen, I would like to know if you are gonna post your translations of Naruto 501-504 in MangaHelpers.
Yours is the only reliable translation of Naruto available nowadays, and when the chapters of Mangastream are deleted, thanks to the release of a new volume of Naruto, we won't have anywhere to read your translations of these chapters anymore... :(
Or are you posting it somewhere else??

Hello Hisshou,
I don't know how often you check this thread but I thought you probably don't want to be bothered by PM. ^^;
I just wanted to say thanks for all the wonderful FMA translations! :3
Also, could you tell me a bit about how you started working for Viz? I've always wondered if I ever got good at Japanese if I'd work for a publishing company, but I thought they wouldn't ever deal with an internet translator. ;A;
Do you like working for them?

why u stop translating naruto. i loved every chapter. i would also buy the manga only if you were the translator. you breathed life into the story in a way that made every single pattern even more epic it was anyway. i miss that old hisshou-style. i can't get used to those loveless translations since you've been gone.
edit: this looks like i am only complaining about your loss, but its the other way round. i loved you for your translations. really. for me the weekly chapter was incomplete without your translation. since you don't translate naruto isn't the same. you did a great job!

Hey man, I appreciate that, I really do! :ossu The truth is I just got tired of the "scanlaiton game" where if I couldn't translate the moment a raw came in people would go with someone else, I'm also busy doing more pro translation work (like on Crunchyroll.com where I'm currently doing Naruto Spin-Off:Rock Lee and His Ninja Pals (http://www.google.com/url?q=http://www.crunchyroll.com/naruto-spin-off-rock-lee-his-ninja-pals&sa=U&ei=yI6RULimB4vc8ATWu4DwAQ&ved=0CB0QFjAA&usg=AFQjCNGa73fE87rbzgwQrbFtAIg_AlGN2g)).
