Genre: Action, Fantasy, Steampunk
Serialized In: Jump SQ

Tegami Bachi (or Letter Bees) are couriers that deliver important letters and packages throughout the land of eternal dusk, Amber Ground.

I've picked up the first two volumes in Japanese, and the art style is very pretty indeed. I'd love to see this series get scanlated. ^_^

Well, Asakura asked me to do it a long while ago, but he didn't give me raws for it ^^"

The first chapter is 120 pages...

WOW! and to make a point, its popular enough to make the jump(hehe) to jump square, so it must be pretty damn good.

anyone know a basic sumamry?

It seems- without me having hammered out a full translation, but just by skimming- to be about a boy named Lagu/Ragu, whose goal is to become a tegamibachi- a "letter bee", or someone whose purpose is to deliver important mail. Hereafter, I'm calling him Lagu, because Ragu reminds me of pasta. >_> In any case, when he was quite young, he was befriended by one of the tegamibachi and he was so down upon his luck and so grateful for the attention and help that he wanted to do the same when he got older.

This backstory takes up most of the first volume, but toward the end is several years later, when he meets a young girl named Nicchi who's being kept prisoner; she is not human, and presumed dangerous. At first, he takes on the task of delivering her as a "package" as he's asked- but in the end, they give the people who'd kept her there their just desserts and take to traveling together. In the second volume, he and Nicchi go about attempting to make sure a particularly important letter gets where it needs to be.

Since it's a Jump series, there's of course weird magic and monsters and lots of action in addition to the pretty art. ^_^

I can share pictures, but I haven't got a scanner so I can't provide raws. >:

Lagu is saved in the first volume by his role model. (http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b383/Asidian/DSCN0474.jpg)

But he grows up to be pretty cool in his own right. (http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b383/Asidian/DSCN0478.jpg)

Later, Nicchi finally gives Lagu her name. (http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b383/Asidian/DSCN0475.jpg)

And finally, Nicchi watches the memories of Lagu's (angsty) childhood. (http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b383/Asidian/DSCN0476.jpg)

Hi there !
Unfortunately, I bring bad news: I will probably not be able to scan volume #1 until the end of this month. :(

Actually the problem is that my scanner is not compatible with my Operating System.it's just compatible with Windows, but currently I've got Linux (anybody knows ? complicated. xD)
I might have received Windows a week ago !! they are late. but I still wait, Once I receive it, I'll be able to scan Tegami Bachi.

I'm really sorry, someone on the internet will probably scan it before, but anyway, as I said, I'll do it as soon as possible. *keep hope* XD

And thanks to fkeidjn for #2 (is it as good as #1 ?)I'm planning to buy it too lol
(you've got a scanner prob too? >.< )

(and my english is NOT pretty good lol )

Jump Square isn't out yet. The only thing out for the new Jump SQ series is a one-shot for Kure-nai. You can find it over at the Jump Square thread.

As for Tegami Bachi, up until now I'm guessing I'm the only one that has volume 1 on hand right now. Sorry >.>

P.S.: Shiki won't be released until December

lo all, nice to see other people interested in Tegami-bachi! Does anyone know if there's a translation out or in the works for any of volume 1 yet? I heard there was a group working on a scanlation already... I've been working on and off on a rough translation of the first chapter, and was wondering whether I should post it :x I'm new to MH so sorry if this is the wrong place to post this. Just wanted to know whether there was interest or not! :tem

YES THERE IS! PLEASE POST IT!!

I can really only read about half of the dialogue, but I love what I've seen of Tegami Bachi. It's good to see so many people saying they've translated the first ridiculously long/heartwarmingly touching chapter, but it doesn't really help the cause when the translations aren't posted anywhere. :sweat

I'd even be happy to see a WIP and would be willing to help with proofreading/QC... my Japanese isn't outstanding, but I have a great dictionary.:D

well i asked a japanese person a few days ago to check if my translation was alright and the QC should hopefully begins this week end.... (but still this chapter is really long...)

I've begun working on tegami on august but the length of that chapter scares pretty much everyone (along with me) and chapter 2 is fucking long too =_=; (at least it's pretty easy to edit since it's not magazine scans...)

Maybe I'll post this weekend just so I can get some feedback from people.. it's my first 'big' (and we know ch1 is ridiculously long :sweat ) translation project so I was kind of anxious about it. I'm sure Asakura and StrikeFlo's release will be brilliant (been hoping for someone to scan it since it started in monthly jump! so I'm really happy). anyway.. Volume 1 consists of chapters 1 and 2 (because they're beasts and just really long :p ) , and volume 2 is ch3-7. 8-10 have so far only showed up in Monthly Jump before it was cancelled as far as I know, then you have it continuing in Jump Square now with ch11. The only thing I'm not sure about is where the oneshot fits in, if at all, because I haven't read 8-10. I haven't seen any raws for 8-10 around so far. hope this helps ^^

It helps a lot... hmm now to try and find chapters 8-10 I had hoped the one shot would be a stop gap between volume 2 and the new stuff but I think I was being ambitious.

I hate searching for stuff online this could be fruitless it may be easier to go to Japan centre buy the last few Monthly jumps aqcuire a scanner and do th deed myself.

hi just want to ask if anyone is scanlating the first volume
cause I'd like to do at least the 1st chapter using niphredil's translation (of course if she doesn't mind)
so if someone is working on it, please tell so - I'm asking because the guys that said they'd made the 1st volume (waiting QC) haven't written in almost a month here

I'm not a 'serious' scanlator - meaning that I'm not doing any regular scans but want to do it as a.. erm endurance test of a kind xD and for practice too ^^

Has anybody found 8-10 chapters' scans yet?

(According to http://www.tegamibachi.com/new.html , these chapters can be found in Monthly shonen jump issues 5-7.)

Or I just have to wait for the third volume?

Well a policy is a policy. I just hope I will be able to obtain these raws after the work is done. I just prefer raws (after all, both English and Japanese are foreign languages for me).

I fully understand having such a policy I don't understand why you would even mention to us that you had them in the first place lol talk about tormenting. I don't go around waxing lyrical to blind folk about my 20/20 vision and all the wonderful sights and colours I can see!

It would seem that a lot of the people who enjoy this series are very passionate to see it get scanlated and seem to have the talent to do so which is great! I can't wait to see the results of people's efforts.

Thanks for the preview image, tsubasathesayan ^^ I LOVE Zaji's Dingo.

I know I've told a few people that I wouldn't work on any more translations til the holidays... but in a fit of rebellion (yes, wow. I'm so reckless) I ignored work for a couple of hours and worked on the translation for chapter 12. it'll be up soon! This was mostly due to the person introduced this time. I've said this to myself pretty much everytime someone new shows up... but the person introduced in this chapter is one of my favourites yet XD;

haya5h1, I could be wrong, but from what I could make out from the text in the speech bubbles in those panels, I think those are images from previous chapters? Maybe they're from the elusive chs 8-10 which hardly anyone seems to have raw. I.. don't know how to make a spoiler tag so I'm kind of stuck with very general terms here. but! Unless you were referring to what's to come in general rather than those pictures in particular, I don't think you have to feel that way, necessarily. If not, well, ignore what I just said ^^;

yeah, I think those panels in the ad are from chapters 8-10, because Gauche's sister Sylvette is in several of them and she only shows up between the end of vol2 and the beginning of ch 11.

That's a relief what you said about Gauche.^^ he's one of my favorite characters. The way Lag and Sylvette are looking at him in the bottom right panel got me worried (though I know he's only saying "My precious friend (?) Lag Seeing" in those panels, but...) And remembering when Sylvette gave his gun to Lag in ch11, I got REALLY concerned.

Ganbatte! And I agree with you, the new character is verrrry interesting.:)

December 08, 2007, 11:54 AM
XD; thanks for showing me the tags. Anyway. what I had wanted to say was that I suspect that scene with Gauche and Lag and Sylvette in the same page was Lag seeing Sylvette's memories (or someone like that), possibly if Gauche was telling her to leave the gun behind for his "precious friend Lag Seeing". Because the end of the chapter shows that Sylvette gives Lag the Shindanjuu (Dr. Thunderland says Lag isn't used to how powerful the gun is yet). Given the end of the chapter I think we're alright for now. So um. Yeah. I don't know if you've finished reading the chapter yet. We'll speculate more later ^^ I was worried too at first when I had only seen the picture, Gauche is my favourite ^^;

This one uses a re-edited version of the translation by niphredil (thank you sooooo much). As always, feedback is welcome!

Since there is a rather large gap between the chapter 1 that was released some time ago and where the story is now, we were talking about whether there needs to be a glossary or some kind of "story so far" attached to a future release - would people be interested in that kind of thing?

You can go to Kinkos or use a band-saw. You can also use those air dusters, flip the cans upside-down, and spray the cold liquid onto the spine, rip out the pages, and etc.

I really can't say when it'll be done...I just got back from Tokyo on Sunday night with my copy, and it's my first time scanning a tanko so it's going slow. also the new JSQ will be out any day and that will take priority.

to tide you over, some pics:

bonus: Animate was having some sort of JUMP Festa to celebrate JUMP's 40th anniversary this year, and giving away a JUMP sticker with every 500Ypurchase. I lucked out and got this Tegami sticker.:3

Alrighty, here are chapters 8-10 and the Dr Thunderland Sr omake from vol 3. Since there is already a chapter 11 (aka Special Chapter: Letter Bee and Dingo) raw available, I will hold off on scanning that till I have completed the latest JSQ chapter.

nope, as niphredil said, it's just Dr Thunderland Sr's yammering. The "Special Chapter" is chapter 11, that was published in Weekly Jump between the demise of Monthly Shonen Jump and the start of Jump Square. It has already been scanlated by one or two groups.

I hate to correct you but the special chapter comes in between chapter 10 and chapter 11 (in terms of publish date). Chapter 10 was in Monthly Shounen Jump. The special chapter ("Tegami Bachi to Dingo" (http://mangahelpers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=19882)) was printed in WSJ (2007 #46). The actual chapter 11 (http://mangahelpers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=21035) was printed in the first issue of Jump SQ (2007 #12).

Check the RTS threads linked above. :)

The special chapter is in the volume 3 tankoubon, as mentioned. The Jump SQ chapters (chapter 11 onwards) will be printed in volume 4, releasing next month (5/2)!

haya5h1
April 19, 2008, 10:13 PM
ah, thanks for the correction! for some reason I thought the JSQ run began with chapter 12, but then I just remembered that the latest chapter is numbered 16. math was never my strong point:XD

So the WJ chapter has... no number? could it be called an omake then? ...or gaiden...

Koen
April 20, 2008, 04:58 AM
I think an omake since gaidens ussualy have a relation with the current/original sotry and take some chapters to outline some plot/history/character

kirimi
April 20, 2008, 10:07 AM
An omake just means an extra. They tend to refer to extras included in tankoubon that are usually not story-related. For example, character interviews, sketches, 4-koma gags, etc. A gaiden would tend to refer to a side-story, usually a series of chapters that forms a stand-alone story directly related to a character or a portion of the original story. For example, the Kakashi gaiden in Naruto.

The special chapter is called exactly that, Special Chapter (特別編). :eyeroll

I'll hazard a guess and say 5 chapters, which is the entire Man Who Couldn't Become Spirit" arc. That would put the ending at the chapter 16 WTF cliffhanger.

oh, and something I just noticed when I was looking this up: the first chapter to appear in JSQ was chapter 12 ("Corpse Doctor"). and the Monthly Jump run ended with chapter 10. I guess that makes the WJ one-shot "special chapter" unofficially chapter 11, since the chapter itself doesn't have a number.

According to the advertisement, it's the Jump Super Anime Tour. It will be out this autumn, and be shown at 10 locations around Japan. So, it's sort of an OVA and sort of not.

They used to do this Anime Tour thing a few years ago, like with TeniPuri, Naruto, Eyeshield 21 and Bleach, but they haven't had one for a while. I think. Anyway, these are usually 30-40 minutes long. :)

Thanks for the translation! So it's going to be something like the "Memories in the Rain" short that was done for Bleach years ago?

I hope they find an animation company that can do the art justice... and I hope they get as far as introducing Zaji so we can settle this boy/girl thing.:XD though even then I bet they'll do something sneaky like Romi Paku or Megumi Ogata:XD

I can't believe this has been picked up as an anime already. I'm so excited; I just hope the art comes close to the manga art.

Anyway, out of curiosity, has anyone seen a thread somewhere where the translators talk about the choice to make Zaji a "her"? Because in the original Japanese, his/her lines are really rough and masculine and I was... pretty sure it was a boy. Did they actually mention it somewhere and I missed it? O.o;

A couple weeks back I was asked about this and yeah, there is no actual 'proof' so far that Zaji is a girl. I and most of the people I talk to had always pretty much assumed she [using for convenience here] was a girl due to her appearance and just her feeling more like a tomboy rather than... an actual boy. At this later point, the evidence swings more in favour of boy for now. I don't know :x I decided in the end to leave it as "she", and change it later if/when it becomes apparent. I figured I'd rather change it when I know for sure as opposed to changing, being wrong, and having to change again?

Makes sense! Thanks for the quick answer- I was just curious as to whether I'd missed something. My Japanese isn't by any means perfect, and I tend to skim when the going gets tough, so I was worried I'd picked the wrong spot to do it. ^^;;

Anyway, it seems like Asada-sensei is going out of his way to obfuscate the issue by always having people refer to Zaji as "Zaji", "aitsu" (that person), or "ano ko" (that child), and never a definite "kare" (he) or "kanojo" (she). :XD

July's JSQ had another advert for the anime, with a few small (oh so small T^T) images of design sketch sheets. They had Lag, Niche, and Steak, but more interestingly, awesomely detailed sketches of both Hachi Nosu and the view from Bifrost leading up to what looks like the Gate at Kyrie (Dead End). Also another shot on this second location, showing I think just another view of the gate with Signal's little.. room off to the left. Sadly there wasn't any other TB-specific info, just a listing of the Jump Tour dates/locations. But anyway... I wonder if that means the Kyrie story will be the focus? Or maybe they'll just pass through the area.

First purchase back in the States was TB vol 4, and opposite the contents page is a cast listing with spellings for the names and brief descriptions in both Japanese and English.

Steak ... Niche's live bait?
Aria Rink ... BEE-HIVE Sub Master
Zazie ... LETTER BEE
Wasiolka ... Zazie's DINGO
Goos Suede ... ex LETTER BEE (missing)
Lode ... ex Goos's DINGO (missing)
Silvet Suede ... Goos's sister
Anu Seeing ... Lag's mother (missing)

There were more, but these are just the ones with interesting spellings (Wasiolka, Goos, Lode, Zazie?)... or which are simply amusing, like questionable live bait Steak.

Oh, and to answer the question from a little while back, this volume includes chapters 11-14.

Mmph, that was my reaction too. I'm not sure if I'll be changing my spellings. I don't think I can bring myself to go for Goos just yet... my heart isn't prepared!

Wishing I had a spare 7500 yen sitting around right about now... in any case preorders start tomorrow, 3rd October, and run until 21st December, while the figure itself is scheduled for a May 2009 release. What do you guys think of it?

Also included in his latest update was info on the Tegami Bachi Drama CD, with preorders lasting until 5th Jan, and planned for release on 16th Feb, for 3150 yen. Picture under the spoiler tag.

I'm sure the moment anyone hears anything they'll post it.

Volume 5 cover, again from Asada's Hiroyuki's blog. Picked up my copy today, it's even more gorgeous in person, I promise ^^; Also comes with a foldout poster, both colour images from previous JSQs I believe.

>>>> Chapter 18 vague spoilers <<<<
[Don't see why this needs to go under a cut, but for those who haven't caught up yet, a heads up...]

Interestingly, there are also 2 extra pages added to the end of chapter 18! The mysterious Hat Man appears, saying how the time has come for their Reverse organisation to move, and calling on "his marauder, Noir" to go north. Nice full page image of Noir/Gauche, too.

With S.Q. II vol. 2 out, there are new tributes for Tegami Bachi. I do not know if they're omake (gag) or just illustrations but among one of the artists making a tribute is Takeshi Obata. I myself haven't had time to pick up my copy of S.Q. II vol. 2 but i'll update you guys with more info as I receive it...

As for my status in scanning (for any of my stakers reading this post), I am able to scan but my scanner's scanning quality went bad. I am aiming to buy a new scanner (and laptop pc, I am currently using iMac and I'm not used to scanning on a mac) by the end of this week. Expect me to at least scan and upload something by the first week of December.

I picked up my copy today, and can I just say it is a fabulous thing for Tegami Bachi fans :x Sorry I don't have a scanner, but you can see small pictures of the included posters (L-R: Asada, Obata, Tajima Shou [the MPD Psycho artist, I believe]) and read a little about Asada's thoughts on them here at his blog (http://www.asadahiroyuki.com/archives/51328342.html) (Japanese). The Asada one in particular is stunning, seriously, but the two tributes are gorgeous too. As if that wasn't enough, there's an awesome full colour mini booklet with info and brand new images from the anime, as well as merchandise info.

And Asakura, thanks for the scanning efforts :)

I know this has nothing to do with Tegami Bachi but the image is a drawing from Asada Hiroyuki.
Can someone please tell me if this image from a guy with a sword is from another manga created by Asada Hiroyuki?

Yeah, that guy looks like the same guy I had in my other sig before the one I have now. Both are from Asada and are located in Edge II. He wrote about those illustrations in his blog as well

His art is one of the most beautiful art I've seen yet. I just wished that I'll were popular enough to get licensed...

Me neither, I don't usually buy American Jump, but I fully intend to buy that issue. Asada color artwork in actual print, I can't wait! but at 127 pages, Letter Bee's gonna get about a third of the issue. The interesting thing is that while American Jump usually has 2 or 3 chapters of a weekly series coming out once a month, which sort of throws of the pacing, Letter Bee will be published at one chapter a month, which is how it comes out in Japan too, so the pacing will actually be right. I hope it's popular here, it's nice to know that a manga I like is getting good treatment in America. (I.e., a decent release schedule.)

While between translations, here's a detailed summary of this month's Chapter 25 as best I can figure. This is wordy and long! Apologies in advance XD; Under s tags both for length and obvious spoilers.

We see Lag's memories after he shot the Heart Bullet at Big Sis, beginning with his first meeting with Niche, and him saying he had intended to save her, but he ended up being the one who was saved (cue my heart melting). Big Sis realises the Heart Bullet contained Lag's Heart and that she's seeing his feelings towards Niche. Lag takes the opportunity to rush over to Niche, who is pretty beaten up by now. Sis struggles to grasp the concept of a human and Maka being joined forever by a bond, and concludes that it's impossible and mere human insolence to think it possible. Meanwhile, the villagers make their escape, carrying off some of the "legendary" water... but who cares about them ;P Sis continues berating humans, and then Niche too for being stupid enough to be taken in by them. As her anger grows, her speech gets even weirder than before and sounds almost beastial, it's pretty scary.

Anyway she forms this huge wrecking ball type thing with her hair and attempts to kill both Lag and Niche. Steak drags Niche underwater to get her out of harm's way, while Lag continues firing at Sis. He asks if there are ANY living creatures who aren't "foolish" as Sis calls them - humans have tried to form bonds with Maka; she's attacking her own sister.. and he ends with saying he'll never forgive her if she harms Niche, in a rare moment of badassery. Sis notices his Spirit Amber eye, thinking this is the only reason he didn't smell human, but then apparently noticing something else we don't hear about, because she then continues her attack. More badassery from Lag (seriously, I'm shocked and impressed), ending with him shooting her at point-blank range.

Again Sis sees Lag's memories of Niche, and like Gauche, ends up having Lag's feelings and memories overlap with her own, this time of losing her sister. She remembers them both as babies, how they were always together from the moment they were born. The old mayor shows up and decides to get rid of them since nothing good is coming of keeping them in the village. After he throws them off the cliff, Niche is apparently still asleep and drifts off, with Sis unable to reach her. Sis sinks into the water, crying and screaming out when she realises she is truly alone and has lost her sister. We see her transform from a child to the 'older' form she has now, with her saying it was after the outpouring of feeling quieted down that her growth started. She decides it is her duty to return to Maka and... do something I'm not quite sure about. 命の理に従うように. Possibly follow Maka's way of life.

Lag asks why she didn't go back to look for Niche; she figured that once Niche grew up she too would come back to seek Maka - and that if Niche didn't survive, then she wasn't worthy of taking up the role of Maka. Lag says she is the most foolish of all for abandoning her sister, that no human would ever be that stupid. She seems to agree with him in some sense, though she doesn't know whether it's because she herself is stupid, or because her mother was a 'stupid' human. Steak throws Niche out of the lake, and Maka (!) takes her away for healing at a lake within the cave. Outside, the Mayor's being a bastard and trying to get the fake "legendary" water for himself, but falls into the ice water instead.

Back inside, Lag asks what "Maka's role" is that Sis mentioned. She tells him how the creatures in the ice pillars, having lost all of their Heart, had begun to transform. To prevent the world's order being disrupted, Maka froze them before they could fully transform. Sis says that they are お前が眼に宿すものと同じ... 「精霊虫」の成れの果てなのだ - I THINK this means they are the end result of Spirit Insects, the same as the one in Lag's eye. And that's it! (Consider me terrified that a giant disgusting Gaichuu is gonna pop out of Lag's skull 50 chapters from now. Or Lag starting to turn into a Gaichuu. I'd have nightmares for life.)

Well... at least it'll speed up translation for me ._. /hides

First thought about this chapter: Aria is smexy. Even more than usual this chapter.

As the above statement made obvious, I'm glad to see Aria get some extra screen time this month. This is the first time I can recall her taking such a prominent role. With her assignment and Lag's apparent heart reaction to Dr. Thunderland there may be revelations, at long last, about the day of the flicker.

Akiyama
January 01, 2010, 10:28 AM
Someone finally revived this thread ~ :hug

I found it very interesting that the day of flicker was made from people hearts and even took body parts. So Dr. Thunderland, Signal, and this new guy Laurence with Reverse have an eye stolen from them. At least I think so, he has that weird scar like the other two. The chapter was also very funny. Aria and Niche make a great combo. I would have never thought Aria was a clux. I guess the tight clothes doesn't help the situation. But I'm sure she will make this up in her spirit amber power with the violin. Bolt is very cute, it's like if Happy Potter was a St. Bernard, it would be that dog. I have a feeling Lag will give us a flashback to the day of flicker thanks to Dr. T and Gauche.

Kaiten
January 03, 2010, 03:12 PM
I don't think it is explained what caused the flicker. The only known is everyone who saw it lost something; Dr. Thunderland, Signal, and Laurence's eye, Gauche lost the memories of his mother. Aria saw it too, she may have lost some of her heart as well. Most importantly, Lag and Sylvette were born on the day of the flicker. There are still so many unknowns. We know nothing about Akatsuki, the sun, the central government, and only the barest amount of information about reverse. Flicker revelations may be coming but I expect them to only be partial.

Akiyama
January 04, 2010, 08:30 AM
I meant to say the artificial sun is made from hearts not the day of flicker. >.< I'm thinking the government caused the flicker. The hearts are the fuel for the sun to glow, and the day of flicker was a way to recharge the sun's batteries. It has been 12 years since then so maybe it's time for another flicker. Maybe Reverse knows all about this and wants to stop the gvmt so their not completely bad. Those are me crazy theories. xP

Well, I finally got curious and decided to check out this series. The art and plot are magnificent. Very well-done. I love how this manga is very to-the-point about the characters and plot. Glad that Gauche is back, it actually made my cry (which is rare) when he refuted his existence.

It really made me ponder, the whole sun flicker event. On that same day when the sun flickered and people lost their left eye or a part of their heart and some saw something alive open it's eye screaming "mother", a boy with a spirit insect in amber in his eye, isn't read as human by the Maka, and who is searching for his mother taken away, was born? Coincidence, eh?

Second favourite after DGM. The art is really good and I like the characters very much, although I'm not such a big fan of such stories. But seems like I'll make an exception this once.

I'm so happy the first volume came out this month. (Germany is pretty slow with bringing new mangas to us ^^; )
