View Full Version : Some thoughts about Gear

Dunno if this has been mentioned before, but after looking through some old chapters today I discovered some interesting stuff.

In chapter 64 when Luffy fights Don Krieg, the final page has this:

http://img520.imageshack.us/img520/6035/17fe6.jpg

Not Luffy's positioning in particular. Also the fact he seems to have smoke coming from him, which still could be from the fact he's just been hit several times by Don Krieg's explosive spear but who knows.

A few more things that say to me that this could possibly be the work of gear is that Luffy mentions he hit Krieg's spear "5 times in an instant", reminiscent of enhancing his body to assimilate CP9's "soru" technique.

Also the art style on the middle pannel is incredibly reminiscent of his Gear 3rd picture

What do you guys think?

I think that the positioning was just Luffy resting and putting his weight on his legs. I stand in that position sometimes when I get tired, and I'm not doing it to get into Gear 2nd. And the smoke probably is just from being hit with Krieg's spear. As to the art style similarities, I think that' just the general character design for "close up of Luffy's face as he explains or performs a major attack, or makes an important speech." You're reading a bit too much into things, though a lot of people are probably going back and looking for hints about the Gears. And besides, that smoke isn't coming from all over Luffy's body like in Gear 2nd, just from his mouth and nostrils, which makes sense if you assume he was just breathing hard. And he probably was tired, since it was a big fight and Luffy had been injured quite a bit by then.

The smoke is coming from all over his body which you see on the page before. I didnt go looking for a gear hint, I jus stumbled across it.

It's just when he says things like hitting it 5 times in an instant which wasnt pictured I find quite interesting.

...Since the stance hasnt been used much or at all until Luffy's fight with Blueno this could well be where it began.

agreed.
i also remember him saying, right before he performed second gear for the first time he developed it after fighting....i believe it was eneru? (someone correct me if i'm wrong, but i know it was a boss definately after don krieg) he said something along the lines of, i realized there are a lot of strong people out here on the grand line, my nakama are strong, but i must make myself stronger so i developed this technique in order to protect my nakama...something like that. so i'm pretty sure he developed gear after don krieg, because don krieg really didn't pose that much of a challenge to be honest, compared to the others he has fought.

sorry about the vagueness, just going by memory since i'm not at my computer

youre missing a vital point dude. he doesnt hit the spear 5 times in an instant, nor does he say that he does.
every time Krieg thrusts the spear at luffy, Luffy hits it once.
so the thing that makes the spear go boom is Luffys fist.

and if you really do want to see something that is EXACTLY the same as gear 2. then look at the priest vs chopper fight. cant remember the priests name but, he uses Jet Dials. he stands EXACTLY the same as luffy does when he's going to hit with a jet pistol.
im at work now and cant post the pic but i will when i get home.

christ, it was just an idea alright...

im not stupid and I know he devloped the technique properly after his fight with Aokiji but its just a suggestion and its no less valid than most of the other ones on here.

i can see why you thought like you did. i just dont agree to the idea, thats all.

I don't really think it's gear steam, but instead it's more along the lines of regular steam. For those that do strenuous excersise daily, such as football players, or skating (my sport of choice), after a while you start steaming. This is just sweat evaporating because you're using so much energy. It has caused your body heat to rise. This also makes you exhale steam when you breathe. I wouldn't say it's an accidental gear, more so just a normal reaction to the strenuous activities at hand.

that or as I said in my first post, he'd just been hit a couple of times by Krieg's explosive spear

Paz42

it would be really good if oda sensai had thought about this so far back but i dont think how ever much i want to that this is the key as vato loco said and as sympathyX also said it could be either steam or just from being hit by the exploding spear (on a side note i must go back and read theese chapters as i never read them just watched them on the anime does any one know where i can get OP from chapter 1 that isnt IRC)

Imitorar
June 19, 2007, 04:48 PM
No, Vato Loco!'s explanation made more sense, since being hit by the spear wouldn't explain why there was steam coming out of Luffy's nose and mouth. Though the spear explanation WOULD explain why it came out of the rest of his body, especially because Luffy never steams in any other fight, except when using Gear 2nd. So maybe the spear made him smoke, as well as raising his temperature due to the explosion, which is what made steam come out of his nose and mouth...

Good find i must say that is quite strange wonder if there is any kind of connection like luffy saw it and thought that it was a really cool pose. While where on the subject of gears has any of the other strawhats seen the gears i mean they have seen the huge gear 3rd arm but what about gear second ? If not how do u think that they would react to it ?

This is awesome! :D Though I don't think Luffy was "inspired" by that priest, coz if my memory serves me right, he didn't even fight him. It's just similiar stances drawn by Oda.
Another resemblence between those two pictures, The priest used JET dials, and Luffy's gear 2 moves are also have JET in their name, e.g: Gomu Gomu no Jet Pistol!

hmmm now i know this is off topic a little but while were talking about gears you know how gear 2nd makes luffys body heat up and cause steam to rise from his body do you think that, that could help him out when fighting aokji could that melt the ice or am i just thinking about it to deeply

Didn't Luffy say the steam was just part of his exhaustion? As to how he invented them, Smoker hinted that Luffy's actually pretty smart, not to mention hella creative.

ye but he body is obviously warm due to the fact his skin turns red and starts to steam so im thinking that some heat at least must be released from him going gear 2nd

Luffys "steam" is cause by rapid vaporisation of his bodily liquids, extreme sweat if you like, and since we all know that sweat is a way for our bodies to cool down i dont really see how making himself sweat, thus losing body heat, would ever help against a guy whos entire power is all about freezing (sweat = liquid -> massive advantage for aokji).
But yah, since this is manga and is by no way connected to the real world i guess anythings possible.:P

Luffy's always been able to develop moves on a dime, because of his massive creativity. He designed the strategy against Enel's mantra suddenly, and made moves like GGN Storm suddenly, so I think he could have just thought up Gear 2 and 3 as well.

I'm pretty sure he did. He mentioned to Blueno that he had been thinking about ways to get stronger ever since Aokiji defeated him. The way I see it, Luffy had been toying around with ideas for training regimens or power-ups since his loss to Aokiji, and had possibly come up with something like Gear. Later, while he was stuck between those 2 buildings after fighting Lucci in Iceburg's house, he came up with two ideas for Gears that he thought would work well, and used them. He DID say on the train that he had a new attack he wanted to try out. I think that he was referring to Gear. He'd been thinking about how to get stronger for a week or two, and came up with a good way earlier that night. I know, not quite as spontaneous as usual, but for something like Gear, even Luffy would take a bit of time. It's not like using Gomu Gomu no Gatling and rotating, like he did to form Gomu Gomu no Storm, it's a completely different level of fighting, and that would take some time, though a week is still a pretty short time to come up with something like that. And he probably didn't slowly evolve the concept of Gear either, he probably only just came up with the idea of what actually ended up working as Gears 2nd and 3rd between the buildings. I'm sure he didn't come up with them during the train ride, because he put meat in his pockets right at the beginning of Volume 39, which I think means that he had already come up with Gear 2nd. So he did plan that. And he was about to use Gear 3rd on Blueno before Blueno collapsed, so he probably came up with that on the train or between the buildings too.

Eh, I may have been a bit misunderstood. What I'm trying to say is that he has enough creativity to have thought up the Gears by himself, without taking it from anything. I agree, he'd been thinking about it since Ao Kiji, but something like that takes a while to fully finish, especially for Luffy, so he hadn't really gotten it until the Sea Train.

Actually, no that you mention the extreme sweat thing, sweat is indeed liquid, but warm liquid. Not only that, it is salty. Both of these are known to melt ice. That combined with the steam thing, I have got to admit that there is potential there. I'm not saying anything definite seeing as how Aokiji has already proven he can freeze massive quantities of water if he wants to, but hell, an icy arm suddenly heated from the inside moving out with warm liquid, salt and steam. You never know, Oda works in mysterious ways.

Impel Down
August 21, 2007, 05:13 PM
...I hadn't ever heard it referenced to that way, and I know think that, indeed, Gear 2 is a move to combat Ao Kiji's Hie Hie no mi. However, I don't see how we could ever prove that, since Ao Kiji is no longer after the SH crew, thus they have no reason to fight him. They may have to later on, I guess, and then we'd see.

What we should think about is how Gear 2 would affect something like, oh, say, smoke?

Imitorar
August 21, 2007, 08:06 PM
I see where you're going with this... But I don't know. I don't think that Luffy had Smoker in mind when he created the Gears. I can't see what the advantage would be. Gear 3rd could be useful for Smoker, though. Hit him hard while you can, and big enough to grab him, so he couldn't slip out of that giant hand. I dunno, though Smoker probably won't be seen again until they get to Fishman Island.

Impel Down
August 21, 2007, 08:11 PM
Well, in the New World, really, according to Smoker's challenge to make a stronger crew and face him "In the New World". I doubt the Mermaid Island is there, because of the "passage through the Red Line" theory, which I support. And Gear 3rd would be not that great against Smoker, because he could see it and dodge and such easily, it wouldn't suprise him. With Gear 2nd, though, maybe he couldn't see where the attack is coming from, so he wouldn't know when to make himself smoke, or even if he has to.

Imitorar
August 21, 2007, 08:30 PM
True, Smoker isn't always in his elemental form, so that may be. I dunno if that's the steam that would do it, though, that would just be the strength and speed boost. And Fishman Island (Oda-sensei said in an SBS that there's a difference, by the way. Kokoro was a mermaid. Arlong was a fishman. Yet another thing 4Kids screwed up.) is in the New World, according to Kokoro. She mentioned it, and that was why the Straw Hats intended to go there. They're going to the New World because they want to get to Fishman Island. And what's the "Passage through the Red Line" theory? I don't think I've heard it.

Impel Down
August 22, 2007, 06:06 PM
I think Kokoro said it WAS Mermaid Island they were going to next, not Fishman Island, and I recognize the difference. The Red Line theory thing is basically that the two islands are at the bottom of the sea, which is where the only passage through the Red Line is, since they can't just go over it.

Please, stay on topic guys :)

...okay, couple of things.

First of all, all caps: not cool

Second of all, Oda totally thinks things up in advance. He had Brook when Laboon came out, and he had Garp 'n Dragon and co. early on. I think he could make this up earlier on too.

And third of all, creators? Oda-sensei is a one-man army of creativity.
