Okay, this is the discussion thread for all you lovers of the HxH manga (like me). To start things off, here's some info about the series to those who are new to it:

Summary version 1:

Many people in the world aspire to be hunters, for either the fame, wealth or special privileges. However, it is said that only one in hundreds of thousands can pass the test to be a qualified hunter. Gon’s journey to become such a hunter, and to find his father, who is acknowledged as the greatest hunter in the world, begins. Along the way, he befriends Killua, a member of a renowned assassin family, Kurapica, who is determined to become a Blacklist Hunter to capture the criminals responsible for his tribe’s deaths, and Lerio, who aspires to be a doctor.

In an alternate world, there are terrible creatures and vast lands and treasures to explore. Resulting from this, there are constant threats to humanity, and those people that contain these threats are called hunters.

Gon is a small boy on a small island, who has been taken care of his aunt ever since his father left him to become a hunter. But like all young children, Gon has big ambitions, and sets out on a great journey to become a hunter, and to find the dad he never met.

Expect lots of slapstick humor and thrilling action in this lighthearted manga about a young boy taking his first steps into the grand world.

Details About The Series: Ongoing at 22 or 23 volumes (at about 255 chapters). However, the author is sick, thus causing there to be long breaks between some of the chapters and the art quality of some of the later chapters to be poor.
It's also a Shonen manga, so ages 13 and up.

As for the current time, there is no news about his condition, the date of when he will return or whether he will continue the manga or not.

I use to read and watch this religously until the mangaka decided to stop for weeks on end, and when he DID draw it was scribbles... I know he's sick, but for some reason he gets really SICK when a new popular game comes out... something fishy about that. Plus he's married to Sailor Moon, so it's not like he needs any cash, more like a hobby or something to him now.

Anyways, my favorite character is Kirua and the Green Island arc is GENIUS :ossu

Oops ya, a few typos there :p. I totally knew it was greed and killua, but ya- totally spaced it (it's been a while)

Hisoka is awesome~ I liked all of them with their powers, but I've always wanted to see Hisoka go all out, he always just toys with his opponents never really going serious. I wonder if he'll do that with the King ant person...

Well, anyways, I've read up to Vol. 18 so far. I should really get up to date first (but I guess I'm going to do that with the "The Law Of Ueki" anime first).

Yeah one of my favorite manga too. I was kind of surprised to see it come out in consecutive weeks to start off the new year. Well I hope this is a new trend especially since I heard that the mangaka acknowledged his faults on a Sailor Moon website and that he hoped to be more reliable and consistent this coming year.

I'm really looking forward to seeing where it goes with Gon and Kirua in the upcoming arcs. I would also like to see how he develops Kurapica and especially that doctor hunter guy. Its kind of hard to believe that this manga came out before Naruto with it being aout 30 chapters behind and still on its 5th arc. There is still much to be seen regarding the characters back stories and the hunter world.

It sure is a long wait for the Chimera Arc so it sometimes makes me doubt if it's even going to come out since Greed Island was finished in 2004 and Chimera Arc isn't complete yet. Well my hopes for it to be animated are still high so I shouldn't doubt it's release but for some reason I do doubt which kinda sucks that mixed feeling.

Oh I love this manga, very very much! the characters are so well made, and its not always about solving problems through fighting. Oh its so a clever type of manga. And the nen system is very fantastic, its probably the best battle power type system created in all of manga. Its a shame though that the mangaka is sick, the chapter releases are quite horribly drawn, however, the volumes are very awesome. He redrew almost everything and added some other art and it looks sooo awesomeness.

I just caught up with the Hunter x Hunter anime, and I was wondering what chapter starts the next arc (which I've read is the Chimera arc or something?) and where I can find scanlations for download. Thanks for anyone who can help me.

I was wondering why the manga just went to a really poor quality all of a sudden. I thought it was a special like "see what the manga looks like before its final". I had no idea that the artist was really publishing it. (if I was his editor, I’d throw the pages away and say to it over! >O Well... not really, but I’d ask to please do better.) On top of him being sick too. Man... he better not just quit drawing. He started this manga and owes it to the fans to finish it.

I'm glad to hear that he redoes them. It would of been a major disappointment if he really published a volume of crap.

Why is that a scheme? Why wouldn't anyone want to buy the tanks? To me it's just extra motivation.

I should have said in comparison to the other mangaka that are in shounen jump. Comparitively, there is a little jump in the artwork from the jump to the tank except for a few tweaks here and there in other series. With HxH, it just seems like he does a half assed job rather than get assistants and do a good one from the beginning. It seems to me that it would be much easier to do it that way then his way. He just seems to be stubborn.

Also, i wasn't saying no one wants to buy the tanks originally. All i am saying is that Togashi seems to get deliberately force people to buy the tanks if people want any kind of quality when every other series in jump just has it there from the beginning.

Well, however Togashi chooses to do it, is entirely his business. Okay so he's stubborn, and lazy and.. whatever; frankly I'm a bit tired of all the accusations.
Imo he's the only normal mangaka that doesn't work himself to death.

The real HxH fans that still even read it put up with the poor quality of the jump chapters, and won't have any issues with "being forced" (if you wanna call it that) to buy the tanks too. It's quite obvious he needs his time to draw good manga, so I say let him. Because if it's the other way around, and he would be forced to draw weekly again; he'd still draw crappy weekly chapters + won't have the time to work on his tank-redrawings.

Sorry if this comes over a tad defensive. I admit even I get bugged by Togashi's breaks and whatnot. But I love HxH too much not to defend him.

judging on what he wrote on the cover of every recent volume ("was afraid i would not see the end of this volume" , "i can't stand anymore", "i gave all i had on this" etc.), it smells bad :/

I've stopped reading it for a while now and I haven't seen it progress. Is the any inclination showing that the serial will continue in the future ('cause the last chapter I read was when the Hunters were just about to assault the bug king at the palace - too much of a cliffhanger for me)?

Last chapter was a while before April :o. Anyway HxH is one of my favorite series. I like especially Killua and Kurapica. Gon was my favorite until Killua chose a cool lightning attack as his special while Gon chose a stupid looking and slow attack as his special :S.

I also stopped reading HxH a while back. The anime was great. Hope it ends where it was though, because it'd be a perfect ending (unless you read the manga that is...) Not to fond of the ant saga. The drawing is not so bad (well yes it is but I can put up with it since the mangaka is ill)... as are the complications to the abilities all the ants and weird animals have. Kind of took me out of the whole thing.

I guess I might start reading it again tho. And it is pretty bold of you guys to put Togashi down when he's ill. We all know the animations bad, but he can't help it. It seems pretty impossible for him to draw up good illustrations quickly in his condition.

As for the breaks? Don't really mind them. Too much other manga out for me to be stuck on one that's on stanby. And any Vagabond fan will tell you, you haven't met lazy until you've seen Inoue Takehiko (lmao jk, he's one of my favorite artists but his breaks are pretty annoying). Hmmm... maybe I'm not kidding. Anyways, I think I'm going to catch up on good ol' HxH so when it comes back I'll be ready.:)

"sick" can mean anything from cold to cancer, he didn't released anything since early february, and the comments on each cover of published'n'redrawn volumes are very ... "i can't no more" "i gave all i had on this volume" "i believed i will never see the end" etc.

I know. I have heard the stuff on what it means to be sick in japan, but you can't just assume that he has cancer or aids or something like that. He may have those, but i doubt he would considering the work he has managed to do over the past few years. I gather that years of no assistants have finally taken their toll on him and he finally just broke some how. In any case, my point is that he is "sick". Lets not just jump to conclusions when that is the only information anyone outside of the shueisha corporation knows about that.

This anime is pretty addicting, I haven't read the manga yet though. I'm currently on episode 44. I was wondering if I should watch those 3 OVA's too or I should just go straight to where the anime left off in the manga volume 18. I don't want to watch any fillers if the 3 OVAs are filler.

71 to 92 is the best part of the story, a pure pleasure, and best drawn, like said a few moments ago, it should have ended here, and it would be perfect. maybe you should just watch, and when reading the manga, stop at the end of the greed island arc ;)

The ant arc is only good if you're looking for lots of different characters with lots of different abilities. It's also only good if you want to know what happens next. If you read it for the art, you'll be sadly disappointed. If you're in it for the story, it's pretty good. Personally, I like it more then Greed Island in term of story. GI just had too much training in it for my taste.

On a serious note, I can’t wait for the mangaka to continue. At least I hope he does continue. I would like to see Killua’s lightning speed technique which basically should make him move at the speed of thunder. Gon’s attack would probably be stupid... and I just can’t understand how they will be able to beat the Ant Kill (aka Cell from DBZ) when the strongest one of them (old jii-san) is most likely weaker than one of the king’s subordinates! Just when it got good, the mangaka decided to stop. And to think he wasted so many chapters on the old lady

knew he was sick but didn't know the details behind it. Naoko Tekauchi (mangaka of Sailormoon) was asked if ever his husband died if she'll continue on HxH.

yeah i like HxH but as njt mentioned, the art became scribbles and all. got attracted to it because of Gon and Killua's friendship.

I started watching/reading HxH quite a few years ago. I was so excited when the Ant arc came around, but then the writer stops pretty much right before the story ends. Sigh, perhapes he just doesn't know how he wants to finish it off? I have my theories thought ^__^

I really love HxH.. I've finished watching the anime.. In fact, my dp is actually a fan art of Killua, yeah it totally doesn't look like him.. but I prefer calling it the angel version of Killua. XD
I wasn't really happy with the greed islanc arc ending because the story is just itching to go on.. I wanted to see Gon and his father reunited T.T I was excited when I realized the manga is continuing from there but the Ant-Chimera wadeva arc totally burst my bubbles.. I didn't like it -.- I've long given up hope on there ever being an actual ending since the mangaka isn't known for his realiablity. But I would definitely say it was a very good anime with a good ideas and plot that just left the real ending to our imagination instead..

I actually stopped reading for awhile when I heard it stopped to save myself from heartbreak. At the time I was at the part where Kurapika is Fighting Uvo right at the beginning. The since this two weeks to the next manga thing happenedI've begun to read it again and OMFG the story is soo cool (even though the theme is a little graphic for 12 year olds to experience in my opinion)

I really hope Togashi decides to continue this because if it's cancelled I'd have to fly to his location with a translator and keep him hostage until he tells me the story in great detail and then I'd go to jai for x amount of years living knowing I am the only other person alive beside Togashi and his wife who know how Hunter X Hunter ends.

I don't regret reading it, good stuff is good stuff, even if there isn't enough of it. But for those that aren't satisfied with a discontinued arc, i DO suggest to stop at the end of the Greed Island Arc (around chapter 185 if i remember correctly?), the anime ends there, for now, and it's a good ending for the series overall...

Hunter X Hunter was one of my favorite Jump mangas not as much as naruto but it was awsome i loved Killua and Gon but sences the Ant arc started ive kindof havent liked it as much >.< the long Hiatus come back do 4 chapters then take off a full year -_- Ok so not a full year yet but it sure is getting close >.<

I place my money on 'burnout', or he decided he wanted to live his live less hectic now he's got a rich beautiful wife and children (erm, plural? he's got at least one...).

Note: Togashi works without assistants, and in the last two years, got special privileges from Shueisha (who publishes WSJ) to take more and longer holidays than the other mangaka and he got paid more than they did. Also: he doesn't really need the money anymore, after the huge successes that YYH and HxH were, and marriage left him pretty damn safe on the financial side... XD

I hope and think he'll finish HxH up at some unexpected moment with the Chimaera Ant Arc and then quit drawing manga altogether.

If he IS really sick though, that's an entirely different thing... >.>

NOTICE

Currently the manga is on hiatus for indefinite period of time. The mangaka, Yoshihiro Togashi, is currently on sick leave, which leave the manga on its hiatus state. As for the current time, there is no news about his condition, the date of when he will return or whether he will continue the manga or not.

As for now, please don't keep asking when he will return as there is absolutely no news about that.

Hmmm... Two or three weeks ago I finally decided to pick up HxH, after having read about it, heard about it, even seen the first episode before. And I must say, I'm horrible addicted now.

It's really a shame that the mangaka has decided to get lazy with his drawings... Plus he's been on hiatus for what, two years? -sigh- Well, Killua's officially my most favorite character ever, so I guess I'm a little dissapointed we didn't get to see his new move ("Godspeed," I think it was called). And I really felt this manga had a lot of potential until it just stopped.

Plus there's all these other ominous foreshadowing things around Killua that has yet to resolved, like how his father said he'd come back to their family and during the second-to-last chapter or something, Shoot says something like "Killua sometimes looks like he's dissappearing into the darkness." ARGH! I wanna know what happens to Killua!!!! ;_; Gon and Killua's friendship is so cute, though... And not in the slashy way.

Berserk 286 was just released last week. And that manga has been going on for like 18 years.

Uh...I don't even know where to start correcting you... as far as Berserk and Vagabond go, yes, the artists both take huge breaks, but that is mainly because they are Seinen series, and with a Seinen series, this is a LOT more common than with a Shonen manga. Seinen series generally centralize around plot and concept, whereas Shonen series generally centralize around conflict/resolve. As far as actual breaks go, I only know of three series that have gone on hiatus concurently longer than Hunter X Hunter; one whereien the artist died during production of the series (The title slips my mind; All I remember is that she was in a car crash...), one where the artist has been on hiatus for seven years due to unknown injuries/incapabilities (Again, the title slips my mind), and finally, X/1999, which was discontinued due to the 9/11 terrorist attacks (>.>;;;;;;;;;). The point here is that Berserk, Vagabond, and Gantz (Which should be included since it strongly pertains to your case) have not even come close to Hunter X Hunter, in terms of vacation periods, let alone plausible reasoning.

Secondly... Hunter X Hunter has put out 1 volume in the last 2 and a half years, with volume 22 being released in early 2005 and Volume 23 being released in March of 2006. So, uh...I don't believe we need to imagine, since we are living that very same reality.

As for wood5525, the answer to your supposition lies in my little rant (See above), but if you're too lazy to look for it, I'll repeat that Volume 23 was released in March of 2006, shortly following the announcement that Togashi would be returning in "April of 2006" (LIEEEEEEEEEEEEEEES). If I were you, I wouldn't get my hopes up. As many have pointed out, Togashi seems to take vacations when hot games are released, and with E3 looming on the horizon, I don't see him giving up video games any time soon >.>;;;

The first volume isn't really anything like the rest of the manga. The art gets better, and the story hasn't even really kicked in yet.

Most authors fix the art in their series when they release the volumes of the series. Togashi may do (or have already done) it and the fixed art will be released in the volumes when they arrive.

When I was reading the part about the bugs, it was reminding me of Dragoon ball Z, Gon = Goku, the king is frieza/Cell , queen was Cell taking in DNA to make the complete cell.

How will they pull off the story line when Gon(Goku) the star is not to his full strength to fight the king, and if the king eat the old guy will he be even stronger.

That doesn't make any sense. If the chairman loses, gon and killua are going to get KILLED by the king. The chairman is one of the strongest hunters.

They are fighting chimeras whose nen frighten even high class hunters like novu so the best hunters are needed to fight them. Even if it is Ging, it may not mean the end of the series. Other arcs about ruins, treasure hunting are still possible but it all depends on togashi...

The announcement only said that HxG would be uninterrupted for the next 10 weeks, i.e. without breaks. It didn't say anything about it stopping, although it's likely to either take a break, or at least be released slower again.

if he didn't care for his readers he wouldn't have made a manga this great. It takes a man to now when he is sick. any fan could tell that something was happening to him when he started losing detail in his work. I for one am glad to see him putting this effort so late in his career.

Without preparation, definately. At least Kurapica has pretty good reinforcement skills, even if he can't use all his special abilities on the ants. We don't even know if Leorio has any sort of Nen ability yet.

As far as Kurapica and Leorio, they're great characters, but there's no reason for them to show up in this arc, or even know what's going on. I'm hopeful that we'll see them again once the Chimera Ant arc is finished, though.

So? If I want to follow it, I'm going to follow it. If you don't want to follow it, don't follow it. It's simple.
I think you don't know anything about him. He's sick, he have lumbago. I remember that in a volume of Yu Yu Hakusho he say it, and that left him sequels.
Other thing you need to know is that he doesn't have assistants, he like to work alone. If Kishimoto or Kubo Tite work alone, it would be the same that Togashi.
Do you think is easy to make a manga weekly without assistants?

I wonder if Pitou will still be in the same area as Netero or if he was knocked too far away. My guess is that Pitou will be knocked into the castle somewhere and Gon/Killua will get their chance to fight Pitou, only Pitou will now be in a weakened state thanks to Netero and will thus make it a more even fight for Gon/Killua.

For those of you who can't understand Japanese, I'll try to make a brief summary even though Togashi's HxH is hard to understand.
The guy we see at the beginning is Netero when he's 46. After mastering his body and martial arts, he had a feeling of gratitude towards Bushido which helped him grow. To pay off his debt (I know it's weird), he started practicing his Fist of Gratitude 10,000 times a day. He needed 5 to 6 seconds to perform the whole thing (focusing, praying, stance then thrusting) so it took him more than 18 hours to do the 10,000 punches. But each time he was done, the sun would still be there. Once he turned 50, he was able to do that in less than one hour but he used the remaining time to pray. Once he got off the mountain, he did a demonstration of his fist and people realized he was faster than the sound: he would punch once but would only hear the sound afterwards. Then the man crying is asking him to be his master. This story took place 60 years from now.
Now we're back to Pitou and Netero. Pitou says she's gonna be blow very far away at this rate, so she tries to call Pufu. Unfortunately he can't hear anything as he's focused on the King. Pitou releases his nen (the nurse) which is followed by a description saying that this ability is only to be used for medical purposes, and that it can't move once it's released. However Pitou can move but can't go any further than 20 meters from the nurse. That was what stopped Pitou from going any farther because the nurse acted like a break. It then says that she's 500 meters away from the palace and she realizes that the dragons have started destroying the palace.
Basically that's it! I know it's a weird translation but I hope it's accurate. Let's wait for a better translation!

I don't know if the cloak skill works on more than one extra person. Even if that was the case they'd all have to be touching him, and be much slower. Also, their plan was to occupy /draw away the Royal Guards from the king.
