oh i wish for Germany and Italy.

Germany because it's my favorite team.
Italy because it has Totti and Buffon, and i kinda like its cattenacio-jutsu.

i dont like brazil, but i must admit brazil is the strongest team at the moment; but remember, anything is possible in football.
i mean, who did predict greece would win the cup in 2004?

i know- you can count them out. they are ranked #5 in the world now. But i still think brazil seems to have the best crop of players yet. Nevertheless, the world cup is known for showing the rise of a lot sleepers. i expect surprises.

I'll be supporting my homeland of Australia until we get booted out of the first stage...doh!  We're probably the worst team there.  After that I'll support England because that is where I live now.

France are strong...hey!  You've got Henry!! He's awesome (I'm Arsenal supporter).

Nobody wants Brasil to win again.  It's too boring. Wonder if any of their players will get arrested for stealing jewellry again? Heh...

I think Italy will be a team to watch - they play attacking football nowadays!  But they will continue to be drama queens and will probably end up blaming their exit on yet another conspiracy theory.

Germany will be boring but efficient as usual and easily progress through the stages.

USA will be strong.  Last time against Germany they gave a very good account of themselves.  I'm looking forward to seeing what they can do.

Of course Brazil is the strongest team.
Germany has the advantage of being at home.
Italy has the strongest team in 20 years (yeah, even better then when Baggio was playing)

For me, it's between those 3 teams.

Sry Goldknight but as I stated somewhere else before. Football is dedicated to Europe and a few South American Nations.
USA should stick to Basketball and American Football. Well since Im from germany but half turkish and Turkey doesnt participate I go for Germanys rivals Holland. I just love to piss my family and friends off lol.

IKE HOLLAND !!!

The reason why America (and Australia) aren't serious challengers in soccer is because their best athletes go into other sports considered better, or more popular . If only these two countries would take it seriously, they'd be kicking ass like they do in every other sport. So maybe the rest of the world should be grateful! :smile-big Besides, didn't you see America play Germany in the last world cup? They were bloody good! I wouldnt be so smug. ;)

USA has everything, football is the only sport we, poor people, enjoy. Is something you carry in the blood, is the only language that everyone speaks around the world.
In Costa Rica, the first day of this World Cup will be an obligatory free day for everyone!!!!

USA should stick to other sports, if they win a World Cup, it will be like destroying the dream of 6 billions people, since amercans simply don't giva shit about "soccer".

I'm sorry if I offend someone with this

very true what you said there Kadoman, if america for one promoted more football i think usa would surely be a team to fear but as it stands they are good, but i dont think good enough to beat the top europeans and south americans. but as said by ryka if america wins, it will feel like a middle finger to all the other countries who only specialise in football (not soccer)

i for one will support England, (come on england) but i dont think we will get to the final although we will do well with the likes of Beckham, Gerrard, Lampard and Rooney (who's now injured, and that means we have now lost our best forward) england still have a team to fear, so watch out.

to watch out for i think will be obviously brazil and germany, but i think we will be suprised by one of the eastern teams this year round. i love underdogs

Rooney will play. He'll pass the fitness test. This year is one of the best chances England stands...I know they say that every year, but this time, it really is true. Esp. if Rooney is playing (and Campbell scores headers like he did in the Champions League final the other night!). Becks is a good captain, but he's not as fit has he used to be. He won't be quite the engine he always has been, though having said that, since he's been Real Madrid, his ball skills have improved beyond belief.

Yeah, I think Japan might give it a go too.

abdulahi
May 22, 2006, 06:46 PM
Underdog Japan, can’t wait to see them play, I remember last time they surprised me greatly.

Lets just hope Rooney passes the fitness, otherwise we’re stuck with the ex boy genius Owen and tall man crotch(I think I spelled his name wrong, oh well). although I agree with you kadoman about Becks not being as fit as he used to, I don’t think his ball skills have improved that much whilst at Real Madrid, but he is a good captain and has a great team behind him. But I think our tramp card this year round is Mr Gerrard. Did any of you see the Liverpool vs. West ham game last week? Even though west ham should have won, one Liverpool player stood out to be the best on that pitch (two goals and one assist). And his been doing that all year round. Also another guy to watch out for is Lampard. With these two in particular I think we stand a great chance getting far in the world cup.

Let’s just hope we don’t have to face Brazil at the beginning of the knock out stages, but Germany would be nice. There is a great rivalry between England and Germany. I think Germany is just about winning win-loss ratio over England

BRAZIL will win..... Ronaldinho + Ronaldo + Kaka + Robinho + Adriano + Roberto Carlos + Emerson + Cafu.... which other team can match that? like Coach Carlos Alberto Parreira said..." if u can stop Ronaldinho in a match, can u stop Ronaldo or Kaka at the same time? aussie has better players, but they lack of experience (this is their first WC ever), but i think neither of them will survive from their group.
well there is brazil there, and croatia..

Ronaldhino was effectively contained for 70 minutes by 10 men Arsenal last week thank you very much.:)  Though nobody would deny his genius, he is certainly not unstoppable, as Arsenal proved.  And yes, if you have a team with a rock solid defence, it is possible to contain Ronaldo at the same time (who has also proven ineffective on a number of occasions with Real Madrid - noteably this year.  As for Carlos, Emmerson and Cafu, they are all in their 30's now (as is most of the squad - definitely an ageing team).  |For some, this will be their last world cup.  Teams who can stifle Brasil's attacking power are Italy, Germany (the best in defence) and France (possibly Spain, but they are always under-achieving).

Good individuals dont win the cup. Good team wins the cup. It's that simple. Even with Ronaldinho, Kaka, Robinho, Cafu, Roberto Carlos, and several other good players, there's still a possiblility that they might lose if they dont have a strong teamwork. Also, expect an African team to make some surprises somewhere. Angola might just proof as deadly as England if they work well as a TEAM. Besides, I can never understand how USA can rank 5th in the ranking. Do they hack the system or what? :P Germany will be very strong this year in front of their homeground. Last time's runner-up will show to the world their real strength this time around. As for France, I do not see it repeating its 1998 victory. Just no. Yes, Henry, Trezeguent, Zidane, Coupet, Thuram...and others are good but I just dont see them repeating its feat. As for England, they will have to depend on Owen and Rooney. Rooney was reported to be recovering steadily even though I doubt it. People like to cheer fans out a bit and also make people speculate more about England's chances in World Cup. I think that their fate will be in their keeper's hand. England never really has a GREAT goalkeeper after Gordon Banks . Not that former Arsenal's keeper, David Seaman isn't good, but he's never GREAT. Anyway, it will be a nice competition to watch. Just look out for those dark horses. They will emerge anytime. Spain might just be one of them or maybe Australia, who will be participating the last time as the representative of Ocenia will sting hard on those big guns of Europe. :D

I can never understand how USA can rank 5th in the ranking.

Well, they win their matches and qualified easily to the cup.
The FIFA ranking however, it's just that, it doesn't show which team is the better, it shows which team is doing good.
Of course most European teams are better then USA's, but if they don't play against USA in a meaningfull match, there's no way to prove they are better.
Although it's obvious, that doesn't work with a matematical and stathistical system, like the one FIFA uses, hence, even if USA is ranked 5th, it's not the 5th team of the world.

kadoman

Angola might just proof as deadly as England if they work well as a TEAM.

Maybe on paper, but in reality, hardly. Part of what separates the 'big' guns from the minnows, so to speak, is experience playing in high pressure games on a regular basis. Unless all of Angola's squad plays for the Premiership, or Serie A, the pressure and expectation that comes with such high profile games can break them eventually (among other reasons). Of course, there are exceptions. Minnows have beat over-confident giants every now and then, but it's always 'every now and then' and they never progress very far through the groups.

As for England, they will have to depend on Owen and Rooney.

Depend on Rooney, yes. Owen? Well, depend is a strong word. I don't see many goals coming from him. He peaked about 5 years ago. What is good about the England squad is goals often come from their midfielders and surprisingly often from their defenders. Campbell (who scored with a stunning header against Baracelona just last week) Terry and Lampard are all known to score, and Gerrard and Becks are regulars. None of these are strikers.

Besides, Spain might just be one of them or maybe Australia, who will be participating the last time as the representative of Ocenia will sting hard on those big guns of Europe. :D
As an Aussie, I wish! I'll agree with you about Spain but Australia will be taking an early exit. Sad, but inevitable.

I go for my homecountry and my homecountry only:

HOLLAND!!! THE NETHERLANDS!!! ORANJE!!!!

WhY? According to the last ranking list of the FIFA the netherlands has - after Brazil, the strongest soccer team of the world, although they never won a single World Cup.... but okay :D they will this year, we didn't lost 16 times in a row, but then we lost with 2-3 against Italy :(

And we have Ruud van Nistelrooy, Edwin van de Sar (both manchester united I think, could also be Arsenal), Arjan Robben (Chelseau), Marc van Bommel, giovanni van Bronckhorst (Barca), Robin van Persie (english topclub, do not know which), Raphael van de Vaart (HSV), Roy Mackaay (Bayern Munchen, topscorer of the german competition)... ppppffff to much to call, but they are all topplayers. We had more but they were thrown out of the team, we really have one of the best soccer teams on paper, the last four times that we played against brazil we lost in the penalty shoot-out.

We win :) the last WC we did not participated because we had the worst team ever, but in the tournaments before we always made it to the half-final...

We rule :) And we have the best coaches. Hiddink was the coach for South-Korea and guess what, he is dutch :) NOw he is the coach of Australia :p The coach of Barca is Rijkaard, guess what: DUTCH!! FC Porto, also a dutch trainer (or: had).

We dutch rule at soccer :)

Van Persie plays for Arsenal and Ver de Sar used to play for Fullham (he is a fantastic goal keeper!). Yeah, I like the Dutch squad...though you guys never seem to have much luck? It's weird! Considering the Dutch practically perfected modern football. Well, good luck for this time round!

Mmm... as long as their are no penalties it will be alright :)

Penalties are the weakness of the dutch team. Van de Sar (goalkeeper of Manchester, looked it up) will definetely save at least one, but it would be a fuckin miracle if we would score 3 out of 5 penalties at the penalty shootout.

The dutch has a reputation in missing penalties :)

Who here has already bought a shirt of his/her favorite soccer team?

who said usa was ranked 5th in the world????? i would like to see some papers that supports that? because if thats the case, it mean usa is better then some of the following team, brazil, germany, england, france, italy, spain, portugal, holland, argentina, South korea, croatia. need i go on any more. i personally would put all of these teams before america, no offence to any american supporters but thats just how it is.

@ eileen, what you said about england goalkeeper was totally correct, to think about it england usual lost due to a goal keeper error. but for england stands Gerrod, and golden boy Beckham. who knows what will happen this year round. all i know is we havent the best of keepers but shit happens.and lets not forget england have this year a very strong defence. and a fab midfield.

Nistelrooij plays for MU and so do Van Der Sar.
Arjen Robben plays for Chelsea, but he didnt play much this season as he suffered injuries.
Van Persie plays for Arsenal (also has problem with injuries this season)
Roy Makaay is an excellent player, but he isn't the top scorer in bundesliga, the top scorer is Miroslav Klose from Bremen (Germany), and Makaay will not play in WC, as the coach prefers Nistelrooij and the youngsters.

rijkaard and hiddink both are good coach, just they weren't lucky enough to be the champion.
Van Basten was a great player but i doubt he is a good coach, let see how far he can bring his team in this WC.
I personally like how they play their attacking football, just sometimes they forget how to defence, and they are out of luck (penalties shoot out :))

unfortunately, beckham has passed his prime now, and he has never really played very well for madrid.

english has good team back in 1996, and 2002, but again, they seem not ready to be the champion.
yes, they have a great team now, but i don't see they can reach semi-final. top 8 is their best for my prediction  :p

Awww... I forgot about England's midfielders when I posted my earlier post. Lampard and Gerrard are wonderful players. Terry as well. I wont be looking to high on Bechkam though. Never really like this man.

As for Netherlands, they really really are a good team but they always lose. In 1998, they got 4th place. 2002, quarter final?? Cant remember. Until now, I could still remember that penalty shoot out by Jaap Stam. The whole ball just flew up in the air and Netherland lose because of penalties. Also, the best player of Netherlands that I can recall, Johan Cruyff

True, true...Becks is not as young or as fit as he used to be. I'm a bit of a Becks sympathiser though, because I've seen what he has done for his country on so many ocassions...I mean, when all the other players are down and out and it's the dying minutes of the game, it's Becks who does a Naruto and never gives up - even when such a game ends in defeat, he never gives up for a second (jesus...did I just mention David Beckham and Naruto in the same sentence?!?!).

Also, he is still the best crosser of a ball in the world. Even now. Don't forget this could be his last (maybe second last) opportunity to lift the cup. I think he'll give it his all.

I don't think we (Germany) are going to make it past the preliminaries. Maybe to round before the quarterfinal, but that's the most. But Germany has never failed to surprise everyone. Imo Schweinsteiger might cause some problems. He's been rather rough in the duels the past couple of matches. That could lead to a red-card. I'll probably support Germany, if we get far, but at the moment I support Japan, the Czech Republic and Australia.

Off-topic: I'm probably going to go watch the Japanese team train tomorrow, because they're staying in my home city. :D

In my part of the city, there are countless flags. The thing is, it says "Samurai Blue 2006" on them. :p
In the shops in the city centre World Cup stuff gets practically thrown at you. The whole thing has been commercialized to the point that it's not funny anymore. Every second tv advertisement has something to do with soccer or the World Cup. It's annoying as hell, but I still can't wait until it starts.

did I just mention David Beckham and Naruto in the same sentence?!?!).. lol nice link there Kadoman, im going to support becks with you, although his not in his prime, and i have to admit i dont like him very much, he is a top player when it comes to doing his job, which as a midflieder is to cross the ball to the attackers, and can anyone disagree that he is one of the best crossers in the world.

We still believe, we still believe... we still believe, its coming home, its coming, footballs coming home ... Three lions on the shirt, Jules Rimet still gleaming ,No more years of hurt, no more need for dreaming... Its coming home its coming ...
what a beautiful song, brings back memories, for those who dont know, this is a qoute from one of englands best known football songs. by i believe frank skinner and two other guys whos name escapes me for the 1998 world cup. but now its like a theme song for england in world and euro cups.

japan will beat brazil... like they always do.... in manga...
Lol personally i would love to see that, if them two play, all cheers to japan on my end.

name of the song was "Three Lions" and it was the official song of the England football team for the 1996 European Championships, which were held in England. The music was written by The Lightning Seeds, with comedians David Baddiel and Frank Skinner providing the lyrics.

Are the bookies/betting shops legal? A mile radius and there's at least 10, thats a lot. But, there no such thing in my place/country (I think), but people bet with friends directly.

My city (or more specifically the part I'm living in) is officially going crazy. :nod Like I said before, the Japanese press centre is just a bit further down the street in a museum (unfortunately, it's not my street anymore there) and they put a Samurai Blue flag in every letter box with a note asking everyone to hang them out of the windows. i was talking about soccer during dinner with my family today.. and this subject was up..
but i can't remember the betting rate... the rate for greece to win was over 10 i suppose?

Yeah, well, I think it had a little more to do with Germany's defence being about as strong as Chouji's will to diet than Costarica's excellent attacking force!! how many thinks that the home bias is too big?
i thought i saw couples of fouls by Germans which are not called and some of them really deserved cards?

sloppy defending on both sides..
and what's up with germany, i know they emphasize a lot on side attacks and headings, but their headers are not as good as usual and most of the crossings are not good, either too forced or not well aimed...
costaricans, lots and lots of blunders... pass didn't flow at all.. wanchope was good though..even though both of his goals are offside, i believe.. he's centimeters behind the last defenders..

here are my favourites:mexico, spain and portugal.netherlands was used to be one of my favoutites but they started to play defensive football.

england and germany are too boring to watch.germany was pure lucky to play the final in the previous WC.they cant be that lucky this time.

and beckham is one of the plainest players I have ever seen.I can count 200 players better than beckham.he is playing "right back" in real madrid.he is not talented enough to play midfielder.

England sucked as usual. It just wouldn't be England if they didn't.:) They always scrape through however. And after Sweden (how bad was today for them?!?!) and Trini draw, England only have to beat Sweden a couple of days time and they'll go through anyway.

Watching the Sweden V Trini game was entertaining. Never underestimate the underdog in a WC - esp. because underdogs have got something to play for - their pride! Sweden will be pissed off.

Rooney didn't play because he's injured. Owen was inexplicably taken off and replaced with a midfielder nobody's heard of. Thank God Sven is going. Becks, Cole and Crouch were awesome. Three man show, unfortunately. Boring match overall. First half was bizzare (own goal, injured goal keeper, stops and starts, ball spent more time out of play than it did in) and second half was as boring as chapter 310. In fact, I think I'd rather have been reading chapter 310. :smile-big

owen was taken off because england want to guarentee their 3 points...main idea is not to pushing too hard at the first game..that is logical but not necessary i think..if you believe you are strong enough to challenge championship, you should not play with one attacker whatever the score is...

Which is a mistake because what happens is the team loses the impetus to attack and ends up defending too deeply - which is what happened to England. OK, they were lucky that Paraguay is a pretty crap team to begin with. Had they used this approach with a stronger team, they'd have been toast. The only time a team should protect a 1-0 socreline is when they're Italian and have mastered that boring technique, but even the Italians realised that 1. playing a defensive game is boring and 2. 9 times out of 10 the oppoosition is going to equalise 4 mintues from time (as usually happens).

First game or not, England cannot afford to sit back and protect a measly 1-0 lead (that they didn't even score). They must show more aggression and keep going forward as Argentina did last night. In fact, sad to say, England have the only team Ive watche so far who gave up going forward.

Yeah it is true but they wouldnt be able to win the match without Roben.

Netherlands didnt use the right wing except that time when Roben was playing on right wing. The whole play was built on Roben which proved to be right.

anyway... I liked the way how S&M coach handled the game.he changed player in 40th minute when he felt like it (most coaches cant make substitutions until 70th minute) and he changed two star player easily (stars make it problem when they get substitued). he is very fearless.Man ,he even invited his own son to the national team.

too bad for iran, they lost 3-1. They were terrific at the 1st half but they were very slow on the second. Iran's keeper and defender did a big mistake which caused them a second goal and another goal 3 minutes later.

The heat here is crazy and it's supposed to get even hotter tomorrow, up to 34°C (in the shade!). I wouldn't like having to play in such conditions.

Edit: Woot! The Czech Republic won 3:0! All three goals scored by (ex-)Borussia Dortmund players (my fav team). Not a bad match. 1st half was more entertaining than the second - Ghana are still inexperienced and it showed. Italy are looking very nice - I rate them 2nd below Argentina. I didn't get to see CZE so it could be that I would rate them 3rd so far. Italy showed they have improved vastly since last WC - much more positive, excellent team work, creative play with flair and they kept going forward which was nice. They are still drama queens, but then, they wouldn't be Italy if they weren't dramatic!:D

Anyone else been impressed by the African nations so far? They are extremely athletic and work well together as a team - most players just need more tournament experience and they'll be dominating soon enough. I rate Ivory Coast as best among them so far.

Anyone got players to watch so far? Holland's Robben is my pick. And Italy's Toni. I'd say this striker in Argentina, but I can't remember his name (it's not Crespo).

it is Saviola.

Ghana needs some more offensive players.Appiah and Essien are doing very good in midfield but when the balls comes to the forward players they cant score because they are not creative.it is the general problem of the african teams, not all the players are equally qualified.By the way did you know that Angola's goalkeeper doesnt play in any club team?

players to watch?I dont want to say generally known players so there is only one player so far.Cuevas from Paraguay though he only played for the last 20 minutes.he lacks some body balance but has a very good dribling.

only saw the Australia game yesterday i was pretty torn between them and really didnt want either of them to lose.

Cahill changed the game for Australia he made an impact the moment he came on and then scored 2 goals.

The news is that Rooney will play in the game againsed Trinidad & Tobago so that should be interesting

Of course I'm interested in football. I watched and I betted as well. BETTED. I don't bet this time around. My instinct isn't too sharp and I lack money. :p South Korea 2 Togo 1 Again, comeback makes everything different. Sigh.... I prefer to see Togo doing a major upset.

Would it have been too much to ask for Brasil to turn up to the match (figuratively speaking of course)? Disappointing by their standards - played boringly. Even worse than France because they are capable of so much better. Got the distinct impression they couldn't be bothered. Did not like the way they all wandered on to the pitch late at for the 2nd half in dribs and drabs - shit Ronaldo was still coming on when play started. Croatia tried hard, but lacked the quality necessary for such brilliant individuals. Brasil reminded me of Itachi. So good, they don't even have to try.:D

Well, Arsenal did not do well at home no, but they reached the Champtions league final in Europe and lost against Bracelona. I'd say that was doing pretty well, wouldn't you?:D Henry is infamous for playing better for his club than his country. Having said that, it was hard for him to play well for France yesterday (anyone would have found it hard against that gloomy lot) becasue he wasn't being properly supported up front.

If you watched carefully, Zidane was delivering plenty beautiful crosses and Thiery Henry was aggresive also. Mostly in that game, henry and zidane only are active thos other france players only gave them burden especially Wiltord and makelele. man, France didnt even sweat.they couldnt produce good oppurtinities because they played too slowly.I dont think zidane has enough stamina even for 45 minutes in a high tempo match and the other players dont bother themselves to run.

I will quote from myself.

here are my favourites:mexico, spain and portugal.netherlands was used to be one of my favourites but they started to play defensive football.

I dont want to start a discussion about who is the best player but to simply set the things right,Ronaldo was the best player ever in his prime and before Ronaldo it was Maradona.Remember the times when Ronaldo was in Barcelona,he could solo the game and since he was the only forward player in the team, the team was all depending on him to win the match.Man I remember matches that he takes the ball from his own court, dribbles all the court passing all the defence players and scoring.

now he is fat and got old. After all the operations he had, he will never be in the form he used to be.but still he is a decent striker.one of the few good one.The bad thing is he lost his interest in football. He never bothers himself too much anymore.

Luckily my dad knew and we when to Chillies(i think thats how its spelled) we saw them there but only my family and the waitors and waitresses knew that the U.S. team was there. England won again 1-0 against Equador but there game was still sloppy and the equadors got more ball possesion also. England is becoming a team with only midfielders as goal scorers. Sven Goran Erikson should be realizing by now that football is a game where mostly strikers score goals. Gerrard was not playing his best, Joel Coel seems to be playing worser, Lampard is STILL playing rather clumsy and misses many good chances and beckham not doing much either but credits to him for scoring a wonderful goal by a free kick.
Compare this game and the game Equador face german, You can see a lot of difference between England and Germany.
these are just my comment about the game no offence to England fan.

For those o criticise portugal i stand to defend them. If you didn't see the murderous tackle on ronalado on the first half or th stepping of the van der sar keeper on the and of the portugues player.... then you need to review again the game... if you didn't see the BOUTH two yeallow cards that deco receveid ( the first when heitinga didn't throw out the ball who should've done if he had fair play, or the second the in wich deco gout pulled and pushed) then i advise all those who defend holand and criticies portugal to get good medicine for nausia cuz, you aint seen the last of portugal in this world cup. If was hard game for me to watch coz i like them both.
Argentina were great in the begining, After they made those changes, it all went bad. They shouldnt had tooken off crespo and they should of put in Lionel messi or inzaghi.
They went to penalty and Germany won the gamble. Credits to Lehman for making awesome saves.
In the end, Argentina were throwing punches and stuff. Im sure there was a reason for that and rodrigez threw a flying punch that almost hit someone... well...they were very depress that they lost a game that they almost won but whats done is done.
Congratz to the germans.!!

p.s.
German Vs England? when theres still Brazil France and Portugal?

Well, A Germany V Brasil final would just be boring. C'mon, wouldn't it? We had that last WC.

This year, I'd personally like an England V German (cos England would win - it's the 'war' thing). But that's just a wish. England will not go to the final because they are not good enough.

So a proper prediction is Germany V France. I know...it doesn't seem likely that Brasil will be beaten by France does it?

a German Vs Brazil maybe be boring but would you rather have a poor team go in the final? well, not like i hate England or anything but if Lampard can get his shot on target and put in someone to be striker along with Rooney England may have a chance.

well now that i let the moustard get to my nose i can make some constructiv post instead of just saying how unfair you are for cruxifing portugal for a game wich the only one to blame was the refery cuz, if the refery would give the red car in the begining to the player who hit to kill Cristiano nothing of that would happen ( I hope that on this you agree with me, that the tackle had nothing of naivety, that tackle was purely intentional, a tackle to hurt).

My prdiction is that portugal will beat england, cuz portugal is the most motivated team. I can assure that that game in wich we got weaker due to the expells and the players that have to play more carefully cuz of the yeallow cards or thei miss the next match and of course the injury of ronaldo in wich is possible ( is not yet known ) that he will miss the next match, but the last game and more specificly the atacks that portugues team has suffered from the media, more specificly from the england media, have done nothing more than to steam the spirit of portuguese players, thei will play like there was no tommorrow, they will play loyal, but have no doubts, portuguese players are no jesus christ who guive the other chic when beaten, they will figth and they will. If you want respect, you guive respect, if you dont respect you dont deserv it. And that is how all will be.

After that if brazil passes, it will be a great game maybe the best of this world cup, in wich scolari will show that hes the one with quality not the one with the team when he beat the champions. If it's france, for me it will be much thougher game than brasil, but in this case we have something to settle, the deafet in euro 2000.

To bad for England today, they lost by a penalty shootout 3-1 against Portugal.
This game was actually the best game England had during the world cup but too bad for Wayne Rooney for being sent off cause he pushed his club teamate christino ronaldo.
overall, i think England defended well but Ricardo did awesome penalty saves. he was flying left and right to save Lampards, Geralds and carraghers shot but Englands Owen Hargreaves got the man of the match well i thought ricardo would but i guess he does deserves it.

MBrasil = many stars, you have a good point there pal. sorry your team lost. But when i watched the match b.n brazil and Ghana- i realized france had a chance. when the africans played the same style as the brazilians, brazil played just like today. but unlike france, the africans gave away goals with counter attacks. with france's defence, i knew we had a chance. and it worked. at least i am glad the goal came in the second half. otherwise, brazil would have given it to us pretty good. One thing also obvious throughout the game was the respect the brazilians gave to zidane- oh boy was i glad. that was a mistake- and i was glad for it.

nevertheless, brazil has been to 3 worldcup finals in the last 4 tournaments- they should let us go there too.

Sorry to break it to ya mate, but it was nothing to do with luck or emotional advantage. France played their socks off last night and quite simply, Brasil were out-classed. I'm not particularly a fan of France (if anything, I am more inclined to support Brasil) but Brasil were made to look like a VERY ordinary team last night. I take my hat off to France - that was one of the most fluid, graceful and stylish performances I've seen (in International football). They fully deserved their win and more importantly, they earned the right to go through.

England, as usual, played badly and wondered why they crashed out of yet another world cup. Portugal will not go the distance as they are not a great side (that fact they couldn't score against England shows there is something amiss). Look at the company theyr'e in now: Germany, Italy, France...they don't have a hope.

My prediction: Germany V France final - Germany to win.

Who will I support now? Based on last night's inspirational performance: France

Indeed. The first time where Zidane actually played good (since the start of word cup). I too think that Germany will win. It's just as if France has something anti-brazil installed in their team. That's what happened in 1998 too. Brazil just can't win over France.
Oh and by the way, Portugal has a big chance of defeating France. After all they have Figo :O

Of course there was something amiss in Portugal vs England ... the name is deco.
To the final we go, you can be sure of it. An furthermore Im anxious to see the duel, Zidane vs Figo, so it can be determined who is the best of the two, last match between this two teams ended up in a poor way with a penalty that i dont discuss but i would say that 3 out of 4 referees wouldn't mark it, that nigth the odds were against us, and i must say france was benficiated. This time is payback time and you can belive that our warriors will break through. It will be a great game of football not a match like the one of england that stared defending Greek style, wich is the most effectiv way to stop our criatives. in that i take out my hat out for mister Erikson that even playing one short played the match equaly.

So I'm 100% that portugal will be in the final now that we can have deco, figo and ronaldo in the midfield, im just not sure wch team can get to the finals from the other side. Germany who's been playing better and against harder teams, or the lucky luck italy.

Deco is indeed the biggest thread in Portugal. With him back from suspension, Portugies game will be well sorted in the midfield and they will have a better chance on goal unlike the game they played against England. But if France can keep up thier effort, i think France will win. Ive became a France supporter ever since they defeated Brazil so i hope they win.

I'll acknowledge Deco's skill, that's for sure. What I meant though, was that there is something wrong when you can't score against a badly playing English side - Deco or no Deco! I didn't think England were that great defensively!

But as for Portugal reaching a final? Well mate, I hope I'm wrong for you, but I'd bet that I'm not! :D Guess we'll see soon enough.

France showed that a team needs more than just one or two great players to make it.

YEah and thats why i bet on portugal, Scolari is not the best tactitian in the world, is not the best making subs but he is the best at motivating the players. And its because of that even portugal not playing well and cant make those deligthfull plays of magic, even being pushed back, they never surrender, they all play has a block, they play in sacrifice and always 100% concentrated. And that is why i bet my money on portugal, not only for being portuguese, mas for being able to see that this team its all about hard work. And if you can't belive in me you can belive in luck or in something that rules upthere, cuz what ricardo did yeasterday was nothing less than supernatural, he was a god between the goolie guessing again and again were the ball went. For me he was the man of the match, but has I'm not the man in charge in FIFA, I guess Hargreaves serves has a consolations prize.

And for those who didn't know ricardo beat the record of penalties defended on the first 5, ever on the WC setting the new record for 3 at the same serie.

The problem is that there are so many italians that we can't move around because of the traffic. They just stay in the middle of the street and wait for the other italians to come. The cops usually have to come to disperse them...it gets really annoying, especially when italy plays against weaker teams and barely manages to win...

For Italy vs Germany I of course hope that Germany wins as I'm German. But Italy is a strong team imo so it's not too easy.

In my point of view every of the 4 remaining teams would deserve the cup because they all showed that they have potential. Of course some of their games may not bee too impressive (France in its early rounds) but nevertheless: these are the 4 best teams of the cup atm. :XD

I am still predicting a Germany V France final. Germany to win.

Yeah, France haven't played well up until last night - but the fact they have extremely talented players (many, not just one or two) goes very much in their favour. This French side have more at stake than a young and spritely Portugese side - this will be the last WC for some of those French players and they have everything to play for (not saying nobody else has everything to play for, but there are degrees of ambition, ya know?).

As for Italy, they are the 'dark horse' I reckon. People like to write them off but they should never be underestimated. They do tend to play negatively at times, but when they are in full flow, enjoying themselves and going forward they can be wonderful to watch and play beautifully.

I honestly don't rate Portugal's chances, sorry!

P.S - Miso, based on last night's performance, I'd say France is inherently stronger than Portugal - who do not enjoy the calibre of talent that France enjoys! The problem with the French is they are prone to being easily 'rattled' and when that happens, they play badly. We'll soon see!

Well you may not be aware of what im going to tell you but the year when zidane and figo played at their bests, in the 2000 Euro championship, Zidane get the best player of the year award while Figo getted the second. This was a very contested decisoun and soon many countrys razed their voices, sayng that the prized had been wrongly attributed, although there were certanly much voices that defended Zidane, the voices that defended figo were much stronger, Spain, England, Argentina and Brazil (that in the beggining voted for Rivaldo, but has rivaldo was so far away in the comptition for the prize that brazil went for Figo). Do you know how fifa resolved the situation?? attributed the next year award to Figo even though figo had is worst preformance that year. Figo in the year 2000 didn't help the team. Figo was the team. And so i say once more. Im really looking forward to this last mast has it is the last chance of this 2 legends of all times face wach other one final and conclusive time. Im just sad that they are not as fit has they were in 2000. But at least i think that they will leave something to remember.

And one more thing, Real Madrid since figo stoped playing and expecialy since figo left is playing badder and worst, and there is no zidane, ronaldo, beckham, raul, rubinho or maxi lopez that are making any difference. I cant count the number of coachs that were in and out real since Carlos Queiroz the last coach that clearly betted on Figo. Au contrair, Figo exit to inter was nothing less than a big success... So if you think portuguese don't have big talents, you don't know figo, or you don't see manchester games were ronaldo do magic, or you didn't realized yet that Ricardo is the most unbeatened GK even thow we play with holand, england or mexico, you never seen ricardo carvalho teh best defender in 2004 by fifa. or you never watched the magic that flowed from deco or the best striker in france last seasons Pauleta, or the expert in long shots maniche. I cant understand the ones o say portugal dont have stars. That is a wrong thing to say, like ronaldinho didn't play well this WC you cant say that he isnt good. You can just say that he played badly. And thats what happening with ronaldo, now in relation to figo, you can say that figo was far from brilinat aggainst england, but only that. Any other game Figo was great and in the first one the one we was fresh he was simply outsanding showing us a little of what he once was.

And saying this i just hope for a good game on wensday and wish for favorable result to Portugal :smile-big

See, saying things like "we" doesn't help. I said there are some people who exagerate where I live when their soccer team wins, and they happen to be italian. I have nothing against you or italians, but certain people just go overboard. Why do you have to make other people waste their time on a hot summer day in traffic ? If you want to celebrate, then go ahead, just don't stay in the middle of the streets and start raising huge italian flags from one end of the street to the other...your bothering police officers, normal people for simply your own pleasure.

This behaviour is probably normal in Europe, but where I live(where not everyone watches the world cup, yeah crazy world wtv :p ) it gets everyone in a bad mood and so a lot of people start bashing on italians, and doing stupid stuff like picking fights with them and bullying them. Wear italian clothes, thats cool, but don't disturb people by making noise at 3am in the morning when your coming back from a party after every game...

Anyways, Italians are a fine people in general, so let's not generalize them in negative ways. That goes for all other countries.

@ Rampage: I had a feeling it was something like that, but you do realize you started directly addressing rykar as somebody who did that as well?

I have nothing against you or italians, but certain people just go overboard. Why do you have to make other people waste their time on a hot summer day in traffic ? If you want to celebrate, then go ahead, just don't stay in the middle of the streets and start raising huge italian flags from one end of the street to the other...your bothering police officers, normal people for simply your own pleasure.

That's exactly what you said people shouldn't do: generalizing.

Anyway, it's best to be very careful when you make comments like that, because this is an international community, and while words won't break any bones, it sure creates for a lot of misunderstandings.

Let's be civil here, alright?

Yes, yes m'lord, we are in dangerous territory indeed, but some people just look for trouble when they have no reason to. That frustrates me so I start saying words like "you" and "your". I would take it back if I could.

Just use "one" instaed and your posts will not contain this much "dynamite".

I just hope that tomorrow will pass by peacefully. I hope that the fans from the losing team (may it be Germany or Italy) will stay calm.
Friends of mine go to Dortmund to watch the game publically but I'll stay at home although it's only some km away from my home. I'm a little sissy when it comes to such huge crowds. :p
