I attempted to colour like Amano-sensei...came out better then I thought. But I couldn't get the hair quite right. I tried to draw like her too, but half way through I just gave up. And the right eye looks wrong...;~; Yamamoto's weird sword doesn't look like a sword either...

The colouring itself is actually pretty great, although the shadow above the lips and below the nose suddenly cuts off.

I used the the coloured picture of Fong as a reference (since the light was coming in the same angle), I probabaly couldn't transfer the style correctly ;~;. Also, Amano's style doesn't work every well in digital form (since the constrats of her choice of colour is quite low). Her colours works better in printed form.

Amano's drawing style is hard to copy right? T_T

I bet that characters with really long hair are easier to draw than the ones with middle-long hair, right?

I can never ever ever get Yamamoto's hair correct. Tsuna, Gokudera, Mukuro and Chrome's hair are easier. I think that's all the Reborn characters I attemped to draw :darn. I shall draw the Varia one day...when I have time damn exams

Amano started using digital since about volume 13. And since about the future arc, she started using digital for the spreads and colour pages. Any coloured pictures with Amano infamous pink tint around the eyes are digital.

I'm actually quite surprised that alot of people didn't realise it was digital...

Your art, at least that drawing, reminds me of Code Breaker :).

I really didn't know Amano digitally coloured her drawings by the way! Her colouring style doesn't look very "copic", so I though she used other methods like watercolour. As far as I know she only used watercolours for the Vongola family portraits in the databook.

Wasn't those portraits in vongola 77 done digitally too? It's pretty common to mock tradition media in digital, with programs like Painter, Open Canvas or maybe Paint Tool Sai (I'll say IllustStudio too, but I don't think it was released back then), it's not too hard. Especially the hair in those portraits, they look really digital. If you look at the strokes, it just looks like it's done by some sort art program (textured brush)+ tablet. The skin does look 'watercolour', but it still looks different to real watercolours done on paper. When watercolours dry, they tend to leave a very very slightly darker line at the edge of the where the water dried. Or maybe I just have cheap watercolours, and that special ones that mangaka used dries differently. :darn Did she specifically said she done it in watercolours? -is confused-

Hibari's ear looks slightly too small compared to Chrome's ear. Under Chrome's arm, I don't think you needed to sketch the out side of her...erm...boobs. And the other line on the back, is it for that bone that's on your back? It looks kinda off. That's all I can say T_T...

I always assumed they were watercolours, although Mukuro's hair does look very digital. Maybe she applied textures to the colours to make them look like watercolours?

Honestly i thought that Haru looked more like Haru then TYL Kyoko looked more like TYL Kyoko. Good job, i liked your Chrome from the previous picture though.

I finally know why there is a lack of Xanxus fanart. He is frikkin hard to draw :darn. Cannot get his facial features correct...I did this during chemistry...yay for doodling in lessons. I just can't draw Xanxus...something is wrong with this doodle, I think it's the eyes and nose. And no, I have no idea what that blob in his hand is. Feel free to give any constructive criticism.

Coming from your month doesn't sound very convincing...Since you draw frikkin amazing. But thanks anyway :p

I actually saw your fan art of Genkishi a while ago on the art contest thread, I had no idea whether I should comment or not. I thought it was a nice change compared to the usual KHR fanarts...which are just bishounens (this includes myself :darn). It's amazing, the only comment I have is that the glow around him doesn't seem to intergrate with the picture. You could try copying the character layer, then gaussian blur it slightly then set it on screen with transparency. I usually find this working better then just setting glow from the layer thingie bobbie, it makes the character looks more 'ethereal'. If that makes any sense.

Well thank you for the compliments and suggestions! :)

The only thing I want to really "glow" is the metal. The suit is just a back light source. The back light source comes from the light that is hitting the mist which is behind him and then bouncing back on him.

The thing about having things glow... you have to decide what the definition of glow is in the piece. Mine is just the fact that it is metal that is moist from the mist causing it to have a slight glow. You have to be careful, since the main light source is high up and indoor, the metal glow should be more subdued. :)

Btw, I mean what I say when I compliment! I don't dish those out to tickle your fancy! :D

What's lacking in XX is cranial mass... It is too small in your drawing.
P.S. Burne Hogarth published some of the most amazing art books... It helps. Ditto to Vilppu, but Vilppu made videos, not books...

Agreed. I ended up only being able to draw anime/manga style and cannot draw anything else. But I gone too far to unlearn anything now T_T

Often, the people you know better would actually critise you work then people you just happen to 'know'. My friends often say the men that I draw looks like girls...and how the girls just looks like moe blobs. i saw that genkishi at the contest thread too, thats some really good work with the metal plates.

i guess its best to start from realism, this year my art teacher started with drawing realistic potraits and the guide lines and all helped a lot c:

basically his head's poprtions are wrong, ears are supposed to be "on par" with the eyes, the neck is too thick?.. the "adam's apple" is positioned wrongly i think.. and yeah the head is flat.

I guess on the internet you don't try and criticise too harshly because you have no idea how that 'person' would react.

on the internet i tend to criticise a little, but on a specific forum the general age is young girls and they tend to be angry over little comments >_> :darn
though you're sort of right, my friend was drawing alphonse from fma in his anime-human form today and i just told him "it sucks deal with it" :p likewise he does the same thing

I was wondering to what end do you wanna improve your drawing on? I have seen people draw the the exact version(from the manga) of a character and it looks nice and i have seen people drawing their own style of a manga character and it looks nice as well.

Honestly i thought that your Chrome looks nice and that the head doesn't look big. And no it is isn't some empty flattery , but then again i'm a sucker when it comes to drawings. I may not be some kind of expert in drawing but i thought your drawing was cool.

Erm...chinese new year gift? Or maybe not :darn. I just happened to finish it today that's all. I loved that frame with G (1st's Storm Guardian), so I wanted to colour it. It was impossible to clean the magazine scan and colour it, so I ended up tracing it. I detest vectoring, so I just inked it how I usually do. Inked and coloured on Paint Tool Sai, random crappy effects by Photoshop. This is the exact size that I coloured with...and erm...it's kinda wallpaper size but kinda not. Erm..that's all really. Not much to say about it. Criticism welcome (if I don't say this, no one will ever critise it :p)

^The hair doesn't seem to intergrate with the rest of the picture, so I tried to make the background colour similar to see whether it'll work out better.

Anyway...I'm surprised that at least three people haven't notice two big fat misakes :p. Or did you three just didn't mention it?

1) The piece is mirrored compared to the original (because I found it easier to colour it from the other side and forgot to flip it back)
2) I forgot to colour the tattoo/scar/whateveritis

Anyway, I tried to change the glow on the eyes to make it look right, still doesn't look right:darn. Added a darker tone for the inside of the mouth. I changed the crappy texture into another crappy texture. I nicked the texture from NASA...it's just the photo of the moon.

He looks much better without the tattoo anyway XD It's far too stereotyped, for my own part. I don't have anything against tattoos in general, admittedly. Dino's tattoos set a good example, imo. They are stylish, well-designed and original.

I actually didn't notice, and I re-read the chapter just a while ago... Anyway, the colouring is awesome, though I have one more little issue. The hair looks odd since everything else seems to have a black outline.

And about tattoos, I have to agree with pandaqueen. I've always found tribal tatoos to be way cooler.

I guess G's tattoos are just too typical and common, it really lacks some sort of design. I guess I'll prefer them as scars...who knows whether they're scars or tattoos. I wanna do the Mist guardian too T^T.

^If you look at the original picture, the hair looks like a pain in the arse to re-ink. So I gave up (yup, I'm being lazy again) and did the no-inking-on-hair. I never tried this style in digital before, so I gave it a try. I couldn't get it to intergrate with the picture I said. Maybe it'll be better if I do the one layer only method, but then again I'm too lazy to do the one layer method (since I suck at working with only one layer).

I wanted to colour the Mist guardian, and I did. I got a bit half arsed with the yellow thingies because I had to rush out for yumcha (chinese new year :p). Erm, yea, I picked pastel blue for his hair because I felt like it. I wanted to make the jacket mint blue, but Amano shaded it with a dark screen tone, so I kept it with a dark colour. I know the face doesn't look right, I couldn't quite get the area between the nose and the mouth right. The panel itself was tiny, so there wasn't much details. The skin colour isn't quite right either :darn.

I did a random watercolour painting (?) the other day, because I had a friendly discussion with googlez about digital vs traditional art on the WSJ thread. I haven't done watercolour painting for about 8 months...:darn. I kinda sketched it on crappy printer paper, then inked it with these new gel pens that wasn't waterproof. I had the sudden urge to paint something, and this was just next to me. So I ignored the both problems, the crappy paper and the crappy inking.

Haru looks terrible, the face, the neck, the shoulder and hand looks wrong. I don't really like Chrome's hair, I would have coloured it in the other method if I had done this on watercolour paper. I couldn't layer too much water on this crappy printer paper. The cream background-ish looks like tea stains and I missed out the area between Haru's neck and pony too :darn.

A few months back, I drew and inked a picture of Yamamoto. The inking itself wasn't all that great, and the scanning only made it look worse. Not even my avarage cleaning skills in Photoshop could save it. Just recently though, I decided to vectorize the drawing, and it actually turned out pretty well I think. My style has changed a lot since, but to be honest this really wasn't my style to begin with. I was just trying to copy Amano's artstyle.

The inking itself wasn't all that great, and the scanning only made it look worse. Not even my avarage cleaning skills in Photoshop could save it.
I like your inking though. :) I have no artistic endeavor whatsoever so my comment may not be a help, but I do like it.

I would also like to see another rendition of Yamamoto based on your style. You don't have to of course.

For some reason the lineart of this piece had more favourites than the colored version, maybe because the dialogues pretty much explained why Tsuna was crying, saying "IT'S NOT YAOI". -.-

Sure, I can do another rendition if you want. I just need to finish a couple of drawings first, which probably won't take that long. This is actually the first time someone's requested a drawing from me, so I'm actually a little worried about the quality :D! And you don't need to have any artistic endeavor to criticize, just point out the faults and pros you see in a work :)

I like that last drawing of yours AmberRei. It really does look like a tankoubon cover :).

These pictures are actually works in progress i actually end up starting them at school in pencil then i finish the penciling at home, after that i need to color them but since i lost all my pencil crayons T-T i end up starting a whole new project. Actually i was pretty nervous before doing this everyones so good at this...
