Heart is the target, obviously^^
First a good punch to break through Gedo's guard, and then...Ippo medically kills him for seconds with a Heartbreak Shot^^ Ooo.. that was right on the mark! i guess the clue was when coach mention to "stop his time".

So Ippo finally hit his own style of heartbreak shot and instilled fear in Gedo. Hah, he's self-destructing! but Ippo seems to be in a really bad state. Maybe Kamogawa will slap Ippo's back with his ice cold hands? :p j/k

Mr.T: Myata will never fight Sendo, because the match against Randy will be the last match that Myata will made as a feather-weight(that´s the great reason why the match against Ippo will never happen). And Vorg is participating in the IBF, and japanese boxers only have access to the WBA(Date had a match against Martinez - the WBA champion) and to the WBC(Takamura is the current Middleweigt champion of the WBC), so Mashiba will never fight Vorg(unless of course that Vorg wants to be undesputed champion - Boxers who have the 3 tittles at the same time, WBA, WBO and IBF).

You're right, it's not really going fast, and Morikawa already promised us so much to see in the near future...
I mean, we have Aoki and Kimura's A Class Tournament, Itagaki's too, Mashiba's World Title Match, Ippo's last OPBF opponent, and overall Miyata versus Randy Boy Jr... Not to mention Sendo/Martinez, and Itagaki's progress in Kamogawa Hierarchy^^ As well as Takamura conquering another weight class...
The point is, even if it's moving slowly, i'm not getting bored, and the suspens built up will make those fights much better when they finally come ! That's as skilled as Morikawa is :)
I agree Ippo should make a bold move on Kumi rapidly though... -_- That or Itagaki's sister becoming a real threat to Kumi :)
KuwabaraTheMan
November 29, 2007, 10:50 PM
This new chapter gives more focus to Mashiba's OPBF title match. But we just got new info about Randy Boy Jr a few chapters ago, and we're finding out more and more about the Class A Tournament. Looks like the manga is going to be pretty busy these coming months.
BlitzRonin
December 08, 2007, 05:38 PM
Yeah we can look forward to the Class A and Randy Vs Miyata for sure...
If it's Randy Vs Miyata first though... that's an epic match on the caliber of Takamura Vs Hawk and Ippo Vs Sawamura.... it will probably take a good many months in real time to conclude...
I bet it will be 20 chapters at the very least.

i got a feeling that something bad will happen during his fight with randy boy jr... but so far it just seems like he is beating the crap out of him....
geko called randy a genius and i got a feeling that he will stick up to that tittle can kick itagaki's arse and almost ruining his boxing career but then ippo stops the match... it would be interesting to see how the story will go if that actually happens tho...
if that did happen then something in the future will change itagaki and he will change gyms and go for ippo's tittle...
another thing that can happen is that itagaki loses the spar and randy boy jr beats miata... then itagaki realises that he wants to face ippo for some reason, switch gyms then challenges randy boy jr for the obf tittle and winds... that way ippo will end up fighting itagaki...
SabiQ
December 25, 2007, 08:26 AM
look on mangaupdates for this stuff...if theres no 798 release there it means no ones released it yet...
Yuzo
December 25, 2007, 07:12 PM
Nah, Itagaki won't be heavily injured from a mere spar, even though levels are too different.
I know Randy is supposed to have heavy fists, but it's not like he's the only one we've seen like that ! Ippo has much more strenghth and he doesn't kill his sparring partners...
I say Itagaki is "only" gonna have problems dodging RBJ with his speed alone : that will show Randy Boy can handle fast opponents. Miyata will have one of his 2 major weapons sealed, and will rely solely on his counter (and that's what the whole fight is about, right? )
About Itagaki/Ippo, it's not gonna happen, at least not for the belt. Itagaki already clearly stated that he would wait for Ippo to relinquish it.
and YES he has a lot of respect for his sempai. He's humble too, so i just can't see him leaving KBG (unless he actually rivals RBJ and wants to see how good he really is on the world stage, but it's very unlikely)

i think it's pretty obvious Itagaki vs Ippo will eventually happen, it's just a matter of when and how?. Itagaki is pretty sick right now but i dont think he can beat Ippo yet. but it will definately happen in the future but not the near future.
Rock_Leeroy
January 15, 2008, 12:54 PM
ah, there's so many possibilities >.<
well, about miyata's weight management, I think he will move up a class sooner or later because (1) Taka is not human, you can't compare him to any other boxer :p (2) Miyata is still a growing teen so I suppose that should make it harder for weight management (p.s how old are these boxers actually :XD)
because of that, miyata most probably won't fight with ippo, as much as i want to see them fight, i somehow don't think they ever will, probably not fated :p i think he will win the match against randy jr, move up the ranks to fight martinez but he will be defeated because he failed his weight management so he has to entrust ippo to win the championship instead and he moves up a class.
maybe taka would face some really tough opponents since aside from the champions, all other boxers that he fought with weren't much of a problem :s
and sendo and ippo would fight to the top and finally fight each other for the 1st seed to fight martinez. fighting martinez is the most expected outcome. if this series ends without ippo fighting martinez it would be blasphemy!
Miyata is about 21 atm so he wont be growing, Championship Fights are only 12 rounds, and Light Middleweight is Takamura's first class so i dont think anyone who started as featherweight would move up that much. just wanted to clear some things up.
Borgenstrand
January 23, 2008, 01:29 PM
I agree that they will fight, but i think that Itagaki is not strong enough yet. Yes he is much faster, but can he run 10 rounds from Ippo? Don´t think so, not yet anyway. In a 3 round spar, yes Itagaki will win.

As the title says, how far away from the end of HnI do you think we are right now?
me i would say something like 600 chapters. and thats if the focus stays heavily on Ippo.
cause if the pace keeps going as it is right now with Takamuras matches, AoiKiomura fights and Itagaki rise to fame then i would have to raise the chaptercount to about 1000 chapters.
your guess?

If Couch Kamogawa desires to take the long road to the world title with Ippo, Ippo will fight many battles (but maybe he encounters R. B. Junior sooner or later). In fact Takamura has to raise to the heavywight world title and Itagaki has to become an opponent to Ippo + Miyata's and (fortunately) Sendou's and Vorg's (Vorg = fav. character) story. This would be around 600 chapters in my opinion. 1000 chapters are exaggerated.

When you look at how long the series has gone so far, and how much is left to get accomplished, I see it maybe being only halfway done.
After all, Takamura still has 4 more weight classes to conquer. Ippo has to rise up to the World, conquer that, and have a rematch with Miyata, while fighting Randy Boy Junior on the way. There's still plenty left to do with Kimura, Aoki and Itagaki as well.

I do believe that miyata and ippo will fight, but not in an official match. Everything will be done properly, but weightclasses will not matter so miyata can fight at his best condition.
Fight prediction will be miyata starting off winning, but then ippo comes back, then a split ssecond before ippo connects a KO punch Miyata will coutner. KO!! ippo loses...
lol... i know it has a very high chance for this not to happen, but thats the wayi think it iwll happen

Ippo will end when the writer for ippo dies before the story is finished.. thats the only way this beast will end.. with so many fights to go and with a limited number of chapters released each year.. we can only hope it finishes... I can already say the next fight between miyata and randy may take 10 chaps..
Really the problem is there are too many fighters now and morikawa has to figure out if he wants to give them all the justice they need or let some of the kamogawa guys not get their last shining fight.. if we think about the over all theme of ippo it 1) to get stronger, 2) fight miyata .. really thats what this is all about so the guy above me has a good idea for a end but at this point if the morikawa continues how he did the past 400 chaps or so then it will be another 400 or so before we get a good conclusion..

June 09, 2008, 02:08 AM
Hm, I need to quote since I don't know that either. Spoilers ahead :amuse
The anime series has two spin-off movies that were actually part of the manga. Champion Road, which takes place after Ippo becomes the Japanese Featherweight Champion and showcases his first defense of the title, and Kimura Vs. Mashiba, which pits one of Ippo's senpai (upper classmen) Kimura against the Japanese lightweight champion Mashiba (the brother of Ippo's love interest).
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fighting_Spirit_(manga)
The anime covers up to Ippo's first title defense (Vol. 35 of the manga). Because of this, major character Itagaki Manabu is not included in the anime, as he was not yet introduced by that point in the story.
The characters Kimura Tatsuya and Mashiba Kumi are introduced slightly earlier than in the manga, and Kimura's fight against Mashiba Ryou takes palce after the Makunouchi vs. Sanada fight instead of before it (the final OVA covers this fight).
Hajime no Ippo: Champion Road (はじめの一歩 Champion Road) was a TV Special for the Hajime no Ippo anime, first aired April 18, 2003 as part of NTV's Friday Road Show. It covered Ippo's first title defence match as the Japanese Featherweight Champion.
It was followed by the OVA Extra Round: Kimura vs. Mashiba, although in the manga story the events in the OVA take place first.

After beating RBJ, Miyata is going to go Junior Light Weight. Ippo will be upset since this means they can never fight, but its also him being selfish as its necessary for Miyata to do. Ippo will move on fight world class opponents including Vorg. In a rematch with Sendo though, Sendo finally beats him, and goes on to fight Martinez first.
Martinez destroys Sendo, then Ippo vows revenge. Ippo trains one on one with Takamura (Now the Cruiser Weight Title holder), for the World Featherweight title. After a long grueling battle, in which Ippo would have lost by decision, he drops him within the last minute of the last round.
They skip ahead a couple years, Ippo who has defended his belt a few times has now moved on to the junior light weights, and is challenging the world title holder, Miyata. The series ends with them crossing gloves.

That is a very hard question to answer. If Hajime no Ippo can maintain it's popularity and avoid being canceled prematurely; I would guess around 400 more chapters. The entire Kawamura gym has a ways to go before they accomplish their goals though, so it could be even lengthier than that.

I agrre, i read tons of fighting and shonen manga, but Takamura vs Hawk is the best fight, it send chills down my spinne too, great emotion portraited during the entire fight:
the fight itself, Nekota crying, Takamura aknolding Hawk´s strength, it´s unbelivble, really a great piece of art.

This is a hard one, with so many good fights its really hard to choose, but my favorite is definitely ippo vs sendo japanese title match, I cant help it, every time I watch the final scene in it in the anime and the song starts and they start pounding each other with their best punches I get goosebumps.
second is the vorg vs ippo fight in the a class tournament, I loved the gazelle punch its one of my favourite techniques, a tie at second is the sawamura ryuhei vs ippo, this one was a hard one, they both battered each other almost to death.
its hard for me to decide after that, but one of my favourites that I think no one mentioned is the fight between ippo and shimabukuro, the fight itsself wasnt as impressive as the others but the lead up to it made up for all that.
takamura's fights are hard for me to judge, the guy either leaves you stunned or banging your head against the wall, while being stunned after the hawk fight, he went and said his famous line and shouted it to the whole japanese nation, which left me banging my head against the wall, the guys crazy, thank god for kamogawa genji who keeps him on a leash.

Cause this manga title should be over long time ago, how many times Ippo has to defend his title? the story is dragging out so much, at least Baki is still working on his goal, George morikawa just doesn't know how to let go, huh?
please give peace to the dead horse...
BlackHair
October 12, 2008, 08:47 AM
I tried to watch Baki (anime) but I dropped it. Since he (human) fights a yeti or sth bare- handed. I don't like series, which should be drawn in normal senses, but are drawn with super power. I mean how stupid is that to fight a yeti-like monster and to sell it as a normal sport story ?! xD
HnI has many character with their own shines moments and their personal goals. Thus many different personalties the manga is attracting reader and not to mention the comedy beside the serious story progress.
If u don't like it 'cause the story is not only focused on Ippo and therefore the manga is dragged along, then stop reading it! I don't get what u r trying to do with this thread in this forum section.
And if u would have read the manga carefully u would have noticed that Ippos goal was firstly to fight Miyata and not the world. He then changed his goal, since Miyata was focused on Randy around chapter 700, If I remember correctly.

October 12, 2008, 03:24 PM
lol, trying to start something Ichido?
Although I do feel HnI is dragging on somewhat, I don't think it should have ended, but I do think some more stuff could have happened already. Every time it seems like the story will move forward, but instead a slightly stronger new opponent shows up.
Ironically Grappler Baki has pretty much the same problem: they keep introducing new opponents, and because of this the main story doesn't move forward.
And blackhair: Baki does get better later, I suggest giving it another chance. Yes, Grappler Baki is less realistic than Hajime no Ippo (which isn't completely realistic either) but that is beside the point. Baki isn't really a sports manga, (I don't consider Ippo a typical sports manga either) and more realistic doesn't mean better per se.
Both series focus on a group of characters more than on one main character, they're actually quite similar in that regard.
Both series are great in their own right, but they have different strengths. I do feel Grappler Baki deserves more way more recognition than it's getting...
Metsudragon
October 12, 2008, 04:12 PM
Um no? Both have their great points, and Baki definitely deserves more recognition, but no need to trash on Ippo.
BlackHair
October 12, 2008, 07:48 PM
Right, there is no reason to talk Baki down, it wasn't actually my intention, just this thread pissed me off lol. Tbh there was actually also a Takamura vs Bear fight, so u can't rly call it "normal" for sports either.
Anyway, even if its dragged, its just normal for a long running series.. so there is no real need to make a big deal out of it. As long the comedy fits, I have no problem at all.

The match that got the most rise out of me was Takamura vs Hawk. I got an ulcer after that and I blame it all on that match.

From re-reading HNI in anticipation of the anime, I stumbled across chapter 148. Its the chapter when everyone sings "Champion" in the karaoke lounge after the Suzuki-Volg match.
I googled it and apparently, Champion is actually a real song. The chapter is actually twice as funny now that I know how the song goes. I can even imagine Takamura butchering the song and the guys repeating the same song & verse over and over again.

High points:
-still scenes have a decent amount of detail
-most of the voice actors reprised their old roles
-that's all
Issues:
-the character drawing style has changed
-the overall animation quality is hella down
-consistency of animation is also way down.
-animation fluidity and level of detail is also down
-not only have they dropped all the old music (what the fuck man!)
-but they've replaced it with instrumental shit that doesn't suit the content, and gives off an entirely different "feel" compared to the original series
Examples of some of this:
First episode:
-in the shower scene, aoki has some messed up proportions yo
-even in the flashback of Ippo's dempsey roll in the Sanada fight, the animation is choppy - compared to something that was first animated several years ago.
-in the Kamogawa gym scene where Yagi-chan is talking to himself and then later on to Shinoda and Kamogawa, it's obvious how awkward and unpolished the animation is
-Miyata barely looks like himself
All in all:
I'm amazed that this was made by the same animation studio that did the original Hajime No Ippo. To be honest the difference is as significant as going from Naruto (original series in its prime) to some of the early Shippuuden filler.
I'll give a comparative review:
Hajime No Ippo: begins at 6/10, raises to 8/10 as momentum picks up and the boxing levels increase
Hajime No Ippo New Challenger: 4/10. The drop is half due to the animation and half the music. The only way they could've fucked up worse is by using different voice actors.
...Jesus, the only sound effect they kept from the original is the elephant noise whenever Ippo's dick is mentioned.

Well, you can add one more to the list. I started reading it out of curiosity and spent the next four nights doing nothing but reading it. It's absolutely fantastic and the storytelling is phenomenal.

because Miyata added a corkscrew to his counter, I'm going to overlook the fact that Miyata has broken ribs and almost has no gas left in the tank. there wasn't even that much drama in this chapter. it was entirely Morikawa asking his readers to suspend their disbelief. at least this lengthy fight is finally over and we can move on to the next one.

I dont think that miyata will be fighting Ippo. Because in the manga he already said godbuy to him. After this fight he maybe go into an another classwight, which would be the best, given his circumstances. And when this fights end, he has proven that his fathers boxing wasnt wrong. And that was his coal in the end. And ippos coach was incredible pissed, i dont think he will ever allow a match betwenn them.

Hmm, I'm actually on the fence with the fight. It had some good moments, but a lot of bland ones. Randy was not nearly as epic as the Magician made him out to be, I think Ippo could have beaten Randy with just as much difficulty as the Magician (that is, not a ton). So what I hated most about the fight was Randy, because he looked about half as good as the manga tried to make him out to appear whilst Miyata looked five leagues above from the start.
I think I'm just over Thai boxers in general now, they've all been a little disappointing. I hope the OBPF brings in something else, at least the Australian boxer was a change.
But yeah, I guess I'll continue reading this to look forward to Ippo actually making a move on the world rankings. Minus Ozuma, he hasn't fought an American yet, and considering they typically populate the world rankings it would be good to see Ippo take on something and actually have to travel overseas. It's been hinted a little that Takamura might have to travel to get the rest of his titles since there's just not enough Japanese in the higher weight classes.
Anyway, I think next is the Itagaki tournament and I honestly hope he gets flattened -> makes Ippo rage -> awesome title defence. Otherwise we get left with that "Oh no, Itagaki is #1 challenger, but he's in Ippo's gym. What now!?" which I've never actually liked.

The other guy is Karasuma or Karasawa(don´t remember very weel his name) from Sanada´s gym, Ippo beat him in 2 rounds in his 6th title defense.

Heh, I've just never liked him minus the great family dinners. But I just don't like cocky characters, which is why I'm an Ippo fan (speaking of which, when is that guy gonna fight again?). Bleach pisses me off for a similar reason.
And yeah, sorry I forgot about the guy who lost in two rounds 300 chapters ago. The Imai v Itagaki match after it was much better, and it only felt like a build up to it anyway.
I'm going to bet on Fukui to be the surprise packet here, though it might be too soon to see major improvement since his Ippo spar.
Probably be a Saeki v Itagaki final since it's been 600 chapters+ since we've seen Saeki fight.

I don´t dislike cocky characters that much, i love Sendo and Takamura, but Itagaki is the annoying kind of guy who have a boring personality and mangaka gives him all the talent in the world like Ikki(Air Gear) and Nagi(Tenjou Tenge), i´m a big fan of Air Gear and Tenjou Tenge but only for their secondary characters, Ikki and Nagi are probably some of the characters i hate in manga and Itagaki is following that path.

I hope Mashiba hurries up and kills whoever this guy is so we can get on with the A-class tournament. I'm praying Aoki and Kimura get one more shot at their respective titles.
I also loled in the latest chapter when Kimura mocks Aoki because Mashiba moved up to lightweight, only for Aoki to be like, "I'm not worried, I'll never make it all the to the OPBF anyway."

Hmm, I'm confused now that Mashiba moved up. See I thought there was a plan to have Vorg v Mashiba on the world stage, yet now both of them are in different weight classes.
Minus Kimura and Aoki, what other big names do we have in these classes? I'm worried that they'll both become increasingly seperate to Ippo's story and this will need to be renamed Hajime no IppoMashibaMiyata or something.
Still, looking forward to Mashiba's fight. Where is this chapter anyway? We haven't had a new one for a couple of weeks now.

Sorry that I have nothing to add in regards to your post bittman but i'm not a fan of Vorg, Mashiba or Miyata. Oh actually, I'll say that Miyata has been phased out quite a bit and with Itagaki as the new speed genius the only real question is, what do we need Miyata for? He'll be around, but I doubt he'll get as much emphasis. I have a feeling that Itagaki will win the OPBF, that could be an interesting development. We all know that he'll go to the world stage.

Just watched the recent episode. I must say Im disappointed in how the anime fails to catch the seriousness around the Takamura vs Hawk fight. Also they are missing some great and funny moments from the manga. A huge disappointment for me, since I was hoping for a great animation.
Regarding the speed characters in Ippo, I hope every single one of them dies. Beside Itagaki, since I like his whole attitude at the gym. Quite funny with him and Aokimura. I just don't like how they fight, it is imo not shounen worth.
Im still at 851, have to catch up, even if there is no scanlation out yet.

I totally agree with you, Takamura vs Hawk is the most epic momment from the Hajime no Ippo manga and the anime fails to catch that.
And the same thing happens with the comedy momments, the Ippo on the Beachchapters were super funny while in the anime they cut tons of things and the ones left don´t have the same impact.

I like Mashiba.
Now that's out of the way. I hate how everyone is always like "Oh my god, there's the Hitman stance" and the entire crowd pauses to look at it. HE DOES IT EVERY FREAKING FIGHT! How can moving to that stance still shock you!? It's like saying that Takamura's bear scar still makes you pause and think!
Ok, needed that out of my system.
Since the OBPF champion was never hyped up, I expect Mashiba to win in 2-3 chapters.

I hate the way Kimura turned out. He was so amazing during the Kimura - Mahiba fight. And after that he returned to being a big loser again. There are various references of him being a great fighter among the lightweights. His speed and technique are great. Miyata said he had no flaws and his boxing sense was greater then his. They should develop his character more. Kimura deserves at least the Japanese title!

I am happy that there will be more episodes of Hajime no Ippo, but I am also saddened that they're not going to have the series as "ongoing" and produce more episodes as they go on from one episode to another. Then again, it may be a good idea to break up the series in smaller chunks.

The current season will end after the Battle of Hawk fight. I don't know when the next season will start, but it is coming down the line.
The series is only going to get better, because we get to see Itagaki's Rookie King run, his defeating of Imai (finally), his trashing of Hoshi (with his incredible speed), there's also Ippo's 6 or 7 titles defenses before going to better and bigger things within the boxing world. There's Mashiba's fight with Sawamura (and subsequent suspencion). There's also Miyata and the fated meeting of the Boy.

....One thing I hate about this manga is how every single american is portrayed as a racist, even though Japan as a whole is more racist than the US by far.
http://media.onemanga.com/mangas/00000016/00000407/10.jpg

June 19, 2009, 03:45 AM
I'm not underestimating the manga.
409 chapters in and I'm yet to see a non racist american. Even if one comes in later, it's not the exception that counts. It's the rule.
I'm not saying that every german was a nazi. I'm saying that during that period of time, the enemy was Nazi germany. The germany ruled by the nazis.
And really, as for the american not being anti nazi...
...Really, is there anyone in the world who is pro nazi today?
...Yes I know there are some, but frankly, not many. Now imagine your country at war against a nazi goverment. How many people would be pro nazis?
Even less.
Hating anything related to Nazi germany was a patriotic thing to do. Someone who fought in WWII is MUCH more likely to be anti nazi.
Not to say I don't like the manga. I really like it. But...It's very, very racist. Most depictions of Americans in manga tend to be racist though. Like in Eyeshield21, where every single american was an asshole, with the exception of Panther.
Again, I understand that having suffered in war and all he must have hated the Japanese(the WWII boxer) but still, he talks in a way that would make Hitler proud. The manga as a whole seems rather racist.
But again, it has got nothing on Ring ni Kakero. Damn, now THAT'S a racist manga. They have got nazis and KKK boxers just punching the crap outta everyone. Hell, they have got a guy named JESUS CHRIST punching the hell out everyone.

I'll confess my eyes looked at the icon under your username. But I fail to see how that makes my knowledge of history any less accurate.
It's not just making Apollo racist in Eyeshield21. In the last arc, they also made Don a bit of a racist, and an ass. They also made Clifford an ass. And they also made Bud and Tatanka asses. They made every single American who was not panther an ass. That's a rather racist depiction of Americans, don't you agree?
His name was Jason Ozuma. For some reason I don't think he was fully American.
But anyway, we are getting off topic. I think this manga is a little racist. I think most manga are very racist when talking about the US. Nothing I can do about it. It's part of their culture, and the US kind of erased two of their cities from existence, so it's not entirely unjustified. But it bothers me that in Japan people can get away with doing that.
In the United States or in Canada, no comic would ever be so blatantly racist. And if it was, there would be thousands of protests about it. Because people have nothing better to do. But it's just so common in mangas for them to be racist towards americans that it kind of bothers me a little.
Back to the manga, I think I'll catch up with the current chapters in a week.

Um, for one thing I don't think being represented as Mr.Miyagi is as bad as being represented as an asshole.
Also, I never mentioned I didn't hate that. It's just that I think the way manga depicts the west is, in my opinion, much worse than the way western media represents the east.

This is probably going to be his last fight with the Japanese belt around his waist... so you will get your wish I think.
On the tank cover that came out a year or so back the three champs were already on it... this Tarzan guy is the last national champ he has to fight I think before he moves onto the next level. Then he will vacate the belt and the winner of the Class A Tourney will be the champ... so that will probably be Itagaki. It will all work out.

I'm assuming you think that because of the way they had Bryan Hawk act like such an ass, but if you remember right after that they had David Eagle who was a splendid boxer who didn't cheat at all. They showed both sides of America showing that it has good and bad people like any other country.

LIS. So true so true. It will be epic since we haven't seen Ippo fight for a LONG time and a short and sweet fight is not gonna cut it especially the "build up" of this new prodigy. That's not a very good guage at all IMO, since Takamura's goal only really came into play later in the manga.
I guess they could milk this manga forever, but IMO it really should be past the half way point by now.
