Let me start this section off right.

I cant believe one of the greatest manga ever has no topic at all about it. Lemme break it down for everyone right quick:
The manga is about a teenager (at first) named Makunouchi Ippo. He is the typical kid who is bullied and one day is saved by a mysterous guy who happened to be running by (alot of coincidences happen okay). The kid finds out that that was Takamura Mamoru who is the next great boxer out of japan and all of a sudden Ippo wants to pick up boxing and the rest is history. It is 76 volumes and counting. It has some of the best fights in manga. Once you get to Takamura vs. Hawk in this series, you have read the best fight in all of manga, arguably

I cannot recommend this series any higher. It has comedy, action, suspense, great pacing, great characters and more. This is definitely a must read for sports and non-sports fans alike.

You can go to dynamiteglove.com to get more info on where to get it and the series as a whole (there is a torrent with volumes 1-76 (i believe) that Puar (the head of the Ignition-one project) Started

This thread is now the general discussion thread for Hajime No Ippo. Talk about anything Ippo related in here!

I wonder how many people on this forum read Naruto and.... nothing else? What a shame.

Hajime no Ippo is definitely one of my favorite sports manga of all time. Up there with Slam Dunk.

You really get attached to Ippo and his strong determination.

NeoShweaty
June 30, 2006, 10:09 PM
I couldnt agree more about naruto. I mean the most amount of people on this site occured soon after 313 was out, coincidence? i think not.

I love ippo but i tire of his persisting rookie tendencies. I mean he has faced such tough competition but still makes the same mistakes or panics or whatever.

shinwei
July 01, 2006, 08:44 AM
He panics a lot less now and says some really cool manly things every once in a while. But he's still not "badass" cuz that's not what he's supposed to be. He goes into his fights with strong determination and lots of training - that's what makes him so lovable.

NeoShweaty
July 01, 2006, 07:19 PM
That is a good point. I mean i would like him to at least look like he could be ready to take on a world level opponent or two. (i guess Scratch J is a world contender).

My favorite character has to be Takamura. I mean he is cocky but backs it up and he is funny as hell. I mean he wrote that he rules on ippo's penis. Also, there is Takamura vs Hawk which is one of the best fights in any manga, imo.

i love the series..every arc of it.. but.. isn't it getting too long?
i wonder if i'll still be alive when the series is actually over :p

NeoShweaty
July 02, 2006, 09:46 PM
I wish morikawa woul dget to the world level with ippo and miyata. The way things are looking, it doesnt seem that that is that far way from happening. However, Hajime no Ippo is far from ending

NeoShweaty
July 05, 2006, 08:11 AM
It was. I havent read up to the latest chapter either but some other notable fights in the series have to be Mashiba vs Kimura, Sendou vs Ippo 2, Martinez vs Date 2, and Sawamura vs Ippo. (i am not much of a miyata fan)

Mine is the Takamura vs. Eagle match. It was an intense match coz the purpose of it was to show that Takamura trains hard. My second favorite is the Takamura vs. Hawk match.

So far its hard to pick which match I liked the most. If there is one thing I like about this sort of manga is how the characters grow over time. And it can be really funny, for somer reason Takamuras penis jokes never get tired I always end up with my hand over my mouth trying not to laugh to loud.

NeoShweaty
August 12, 2006, 10:06 PM
Takamura is definitely a riot but at that point in the manga he hasnt been tested in the ring. You will see takamura at his greatest relatively soon.

August 27, 2006, 06:56 PM
gotta love em. my favorite char in the series has to be (alexander) vorg zangief, because he fought for his mom and the ref shitted over him... it was heart breaking. Then ippo then takamura. but it's really hard to hate ANYONE in this manga. The anime ended prematurely for some reason but, if your looking for a great manga to read Ippo will definetly sooth your thirst lol.

Neo, the best fight in the series so far is no doubt Hawk vs. Momoru, but if it ACTUALLY WOULD OF happened Ippo and Miyata would have took the cake lol. Hmnn... I give second best easily to Ippo vs Sendo (2nd time) :)

~God~Sky~
August 27, 2006, 11:50 PM

Well in most of the mangas i read i usually like those anti-heroes without fellings like Shin(Eyeshield 21), Rukawa(Slam Dunk) or Kaiba(Yu-Gi-Oh!), but in Hajime no Ippo i really don´t like Myata, don´t know why, just don´t like :s, my favorite characters are Sendo and Takamura, and the best fights are Takamura VS Hawk and Kimura VS Mashiba.

Ippo might be my favorite manga ever ^_^, don't know of any manga competing with it other than Vagabond (to me)... I like Ippo, Takamura, Vorg, Mashiba, and Sendo.

Best fights so far for me have been hmm... Mashiba vs. Sawamura, Takamura vs Hawk (gotta love how takamura's hair comes down ^_^) and Ippo vs Sendo 2. Uhm, also liked Imai vs Itagaki, well there are so many good fights in this manga I can't even decide (because I liked Takamura vs. Eagle too)

Yeah Miyata is a loser... he really acts so stuck up and over everyone to me. But when no ones around he falls to the ground begging Ippo for a match. Then when they grant him his wish he refuses. He sucks.

all of the chapters have been scanlated. The latest volume released was 76 i think, with 77 on the way (in terms of scans at least, i know it came out in august). However, the raws keep going and the latest scan is 744. So as soon as you catch up, you'll be as close to japan as possible.

The takamura fight that i am talking about is a world fight... man i need to read it again. I wish they would animate that fight and that fight only and make it an ova.

At that time of the manga, i was a little tired of "only Ippo fights", that´s one of the reasons a like Hawk vs Takamura and Mashiba vs Kimura, but Ippo fights(after Sendo fight) become a little boring because is just boxing techniques and different punchs, it losed a little of the pré-fight story, and in kimura and takamura´s fights the fights are great and very well draw, but the story is cool too. I like in kimuras fight when Mashiba said that kimura is strong and that he is the strongest challenger, i like when he loses and he´s fist continues pointing to mashiba(very touching). In the battle of the Hawks there is a lot of good scenes: when takamura says that hawk had never loose because he had never been in america and when hawk´s cauch said that takamura is the perfect boxer(very awsome), and takamura´s hair in the fight become very cool.
Now wait for takamura´s 2nd world tittle match, you won´t be desapointed either.

lmao dude. It is funny when stuff like that happens, lol Frey's death was pretty messed up, and earlier then expeceted. Anyway, even tho it's a bit off topic, I went to go see spider man 1 like the first day it came out, and there's this part where he's trying to figure out how to shoot his web. So when he does the right motion some guy's cell phone went off, and it goes "dum dum dum dum dummmmm" and it was so perfect we thought it was a part of the movie lol!!

Anyway when's the next chap coming out? I am so sad that I actually caught all the way up on this manga because waiting for the new chapter is like hell.

yeah... Ippo is pretty damn annoying with how scared he is to tell Kumi how much he likes her. I hope he hurries up with it too... but the manga has at least another 30 vols left (I HOPE), which is plenty of time lol.

No one will ever beat Takamura, because his character his of a winner, he can´t loose, if he loose all the other characters will loose will power, Takamura was the one who take them into boxing, he is like God-Type to them, they can´t see him losing.
I was just thinking, don´t you think that after the Sendo the mangaka make the other Ippo opponents look stronger than Sendo, like the doctor, Shimabukuro and Sawamura, in the fight against Shimabukuro they call it the ultimate in-fight, but for me the ultimate in-fight was the lalapalooza, what do you think, if Sendo had fought those guys, would he had win????

As the manga progresses, I think Takamura will have to lose, after all, Ippo is the main character. I think Takamura goes down with a life-threatening injury after being cheated, then Ippo goes out for revenge.

*clears throat and adjust glasses*

Arnie "Crocodile" Gregory held the OPBF title until Miyata won it from him in volumes 36-37. Besides his powerful hooks that garnered the Crocodile nickname, his most notable move was the Bloody Cross, where he used his elbow to stop Miyata's Cross Counters and land free hits at close range.

That was the first fight where Miyata used his "Cross JOLT!", which is what won him the match.

Yeah, that's true too. But I wouldn't want another Ippo vs. Jimmy, where they both have equal power until Ippo uses the Dempsey Smash, and then that ends it right there--after all, both of them specialize in throwing powerful hooks.

Great topics, Boff :D

Here's my list, in random order:
Ippo vs Mashiba: That's one scary...in-law :D. He looks like a psychopath, but i think he approves Ippo dating his sister (at least that's how i see it up to v 68).

Ippo vs Sendou (1st fight): Sendou is Ippo with less luck and tenacity. Personally, i think his awareness of his talent made him unconsciously not working as hard as Ippo.

Ippo vs Date (title fight): corkscrew blow ftw!!! :thumbs

Somehow, I doubt that, since he was beaten by someone who'd never even fought in an OPBF title match before--AND it was the first KO loss he'd ever suffered. So I doubt that he has nearly as much clout on the world stage as he did when he was OPBF champ.

That's why I don't think Ippo should fight Arnie--because that's basically the same thing that happened to Jimmy before he fought Ippo.

cross JOLT was that the one where he throws his whole body into the punch and bets it all on that one pounch?

Yeah, that's the Jolt. The "Cross JOLT!" is just a name I made up for when he throws the Jolt as a cross counter.

I love how lots of people have their own version of the JOLT!

Since it's just a full body weight punch nearly anyone can do it... but Miyata using it as a counter is just awesome.

Ippo's Dempsey Hooks and whatnot are JOLT's since those are full body weight.. and the hook that Date was going to hit Martinez with to finish him off could be considered a JOLT!

That's true--but I like Miyata's version the best, since it's the most risky and has the biggest payoff when it works. No one else's potential JOLTs have been able to knock out people in one hit, after all.

then just ask here and someone will surely post the answer for you.
and ofcourse if youre looking for something in the anime as well your free to ask that tto. although
bear in mind that this is mostly a manga forum so maybe not all the readers have seen the anime.
but its worth a shot nonetheless.

so what chapter/episode are you looking for?

Hello again peoples! im rereading Ippo for the 4th time here and im at the makunouchi vs saeki fight.
and this got me thinking. theres been a few years since that fight and saeki should have progressed
a lot since then, he was once known as the speed star and maybe he's better and faster now.
imagine a fight between him and Itagaki... that could be awesome! i mean normally every fight turns into a slugfest
after a while but i think a fight like that could be really interesting. it would be a race to set the pace and both of them are really fast so instead of a slugfest we would really see some awesome footwork and kickass dodging abilities
from both fighters for a change, basicly a technical showdown.

so thats a fight id really like too read, how about you guys? any fight youd like to see?
miyata vs vorg? mashiba vs makunouchi nr2? anything goes!

By far my favorite fight was Kimura vs. Mashiba. While most of the fights by Makunouchi, you can pretty much predict a win (let's be honest... in the rest of the series I doubt he'll lose more than one more match), and Takamura... well he'll always win with a knockout punch, and Itagaki, while he had a rough beginning, after the Hoshi fight, I'm pretty sure he'll walk away with nothing but wins for a while (if not the rest of the series). That leave the two remaining, Aoki and Kimura. Aoki I'm not overly fond of... he's too much of the comic relief, but Kimura remains somewhat serious, and his was the first fight that I couldn't predict the ending of. I was really into it, and really sad when he lost.

Vorg vs. Sawamura, Miyata vs. Vorg, and Miyata vs. Sawamura are my top 3 "fantasy fights". I would've also loved to see Vorg vs. Date, since Kamogawa said Vorg's battle prowess in his natural style matches Date's.

KuwabaraTheMan

Miyata vs Ippo III

That has to be the #1.

But I'd love to see Miyata vs Vorg, as well. Itagaki vs Saeki would also be really interestiing. And I'd like to see Imai take on either Ippo(in an official match) or Sendo.

gigantor21
January 22, 2007, 02:21 PM
Well, I don't know about Itagaki vs. Saeki, but Itagaki vs. Karasawa seems entirely likely since they're both active. It'd be nice to see Itagaki fight someone just as fast as him for a change.

i thought of another one id love too see, Itagaki vs Miyata. and its for the same reason
as my other post. i love techniqal and fast fights. im a bit tired of slugfests...
but they have some charm too i just prefer tech fights.

so heres a few fights id like too see that could happen:
Itagaki vs Saeki
Itagaki vs Miyata
vorg vs miyata
sendo vs miyata
Ippo vs sendo III
imai vs hoshi
imai vs ippo
hoshi vs ippo
martinez vs miyata(even a spar would suffice)

fights that will never happen but could be funny:
Takamura vs Martinez (i know i know... but i still would love to see that :D)
takamura vs aoki (if aoki showed the same tenacity he had in his title challenge)
aoki vs Kimura (just too see whos the better of aokimura :p)

thats about it for my wishlist... yup, cant think of any more :nuts

Well i really liked to see:
Sendo vs Myata
Sawamura vs Sendo(Impossible)
Takamura vs Hawk II(Impossible too)
Vorg vs Mashiba
Sendo vs Ricardo Martinez
Many people choose Itagaki´s fights but i really don´t like is style, and he don´t give me the same "awsome" feeling that Myata gives.

Sorata

My favorite fights are:
1º - Takamura vs Hawk - I have read lots of shonen and seinen manga, and i have to admit that this is one of the best fights i ever saw in a manga
2º - Kimura vs Mashiba - A great match and very emotional(Kimura was great in this mach)
3º - Takamura vs Eagle - Who don´t likes Takamura´s fights?
4ª - Sendo vs Vorg - Sendo is my favorite character and Vorg the third one(Takamura the second)
5º - Ippo vs Sendo II - Maybe the secondest great battle of the mang but i´m not a great fan of Ippo.

Sorata

Well a poll a little big :p, but i think that i don´t forget any important boxer(sorry Papaya´s fans lololol)
Vote for your favorite boxer and say why.
My vote goes to Sendo Takeshi, i realyy like is way of fighting and is vision of boxing, it´s very cool when Sendo is telling Ippo why he likes boxing.
If i could vote again my votes would go to Takamura and Vorg, they are both pretty cool and their way of thinking have some similarities with Sendo.

The poll is to determine the best boxer, but the question is who is your favorite boxer.
Because the mangaka of Ippo already said that the best boxers in Ippo world are first-Takamura, second-Ricardo Martinez and third-Myata.
So the result of this poll will tell us the best boxer for the fans, so if you like Aoki just vote for him.

maybe you havent seen a real boxing match, when you put the gloves in a match one of the refree crew checks your taping and marks it so it cant be changed, and the when you put the glove they tape the glove more than ten times so it cant be cut by punches, also check the sawumara fight with ippo when sawumara cuts the tape of his glove

I also see the words OPBF in those pages a few times... I'm wondering if Mashiba is going to go after the OPBF belt and then challenge the WBC champ...

Ippo couldn't come up with any special strategy and he just decided to go carge in like he always does.

It's very hard to figure out how Gedo can distort someone's perception. Ippo will have a very hard hard time because even if he avoids punches he might still not be able to connect and he may not win if Gedo plans to win by decision :notrust especially when considering how Gedo is a master of controlling fights

This is one of the most interesting fights ever because this time Ippos's opponent is totally different that anyone else. He is not an out boxer, he is not an in fighter, and it's not about a counter or a special finishing move. I wonder how Ippo will get out of this situation and I say he has a big chance of losing.

Well sparring with Mashiba isn't going to help Ippo that much in his fight with Malcolm.. I don't think...

Because I believe that Malcolm uses a Mexican jab, like Martinez and Jose Ramirez use...

His arms don't look that long... so I bet it's the angles that he uses. Sendo had trouble with Jose in the same fashion before he just flipped out and killed him with the Smash...

If Ippo keeps pushing forward and trying to corner Malcolm, he should be fine. He just can't let Malcolm get in his head and make him second guess himself.

BlitzRonin
February 18, 2007, 01:54 PM
The two best are easily Martinez and Takamura...

Martinez has accomplished more than Takamura at this point in the manga, but Takamura is the best overall.

Other than those two I would say that Kamogawa and Nekota were probably better than anyone else is right now... They were able to bang on a Junior Welter who was ranked 5th in the world back then, at Bantam. Not to mention he was truly ranked 5th in the world, as there was only one organization back then.

Unfortunately I had to clear out my drives so it's been a few weeks, and I haven't gotten around to re-dling the manga. But from what I remember of the tape, I think the magic that gedo uses has to be with his feet. From what I recall, he had an abnormally wide stance in the tape. So I'm guessing he cradles back'n'forth giving the illusion of longer punches and messing with depth perception.

In any case, it's easy what ippo figured out. It doesn't matter what your reach is if you take the fight into an in-fight. At close range, dodging also becomes more difficult.... so I'm assuming once close, he'll aim for the body and rely on his power and aquired dash and footwork he was saving for miyata.

Of course that's just my guess from what memory serves.

Personally I don't know anything about the mashiba spar because I only saw the raw so far. I'm sure it's to get him fine-tuned for long reaching fast jabs, so that he can be prepared if he finds it difficult to set his own pace.

A wide stance is troublesome for Ippo. He charges in while guarding his head and looking at his opponents feet to determine when to hit him so if his opponent faces him side ways it's gonna be hard to get a clear hit and Gedo will be out of Ippo's range even if he doesn't look like it.

I disagree, that style of fighting is more dangerous for outboxers who are trained to keep their distance and attack when the right time comes. Ippo has the power to take the match into a super close fight where it should nullify the technique when you aim for his body. The only worrisome thing left is gedo's footwork. But considering ippo's been training for miyata, it shouldn't pose too much a problem.

I believe Ippo has shown that he can deal with out boxers' footwork when he cornered the last one by just taking small steps. Then Gedo's stance is still a problem since Ippo looks at his opponents feet when he charges in. the reason he does so is because he gaurds his face from the jabs his opponent throws to stop him from gettign too close
After all it's just a speculation it may be true and it may be not. I did a search on google to find something that would hint on Gedo's style but no luck. So the stance is the only thing we have so far.
I am really looking forward this fight and I think it ain't ginna be easy for Ippo at all

I don't expect a lot from the spar ith Mashiba and I doubt there will be any thing significantly different about Mashiba and his style.

I think something unexpected will come from the mashiba spar. This is just speculation, but I think the reason mashiba put on the head gear is so that he can come up with tactics for a better infight to surprise his opponent. It's more than just respect or fear.

Either way, since it's just a spar and it's a 2nd match... I'm putting my money on mashiba winning. It'll be an awesome fight, but ippo's always in need of a reality check. And of course he might figure something out in the spar, but I'll put more money on ippo beating gedo. And for the bonus round, after he beats gedo, gedo might either quit or try to become a righteous boxer through ippo's "life saving punches". I'd say odds are

19% gedo quits boxing
79% gedo changes his ways after the fight
2% gedo ends up in a coma or dies
