Anyone notice that one of that girl's shinigami bodyguards used handsigns from naruto to make the barrier protecting their house? Or are the handsigns common in japan or something? >.>

Kishimoto did not invent hand signs. :amuse I am sure it was just the animators' way of using a powerful barrier bakudou without having to come up with an incantation or name for it.

Hand signs were also used before the execution of Rukia.

Hand signs are used by shinigami in Kidou. We see Rukia using them at the beginning of the series, later too.
