View Full Version : Complete Bakuman by Ohba Tsugumi and Obata Takeshi

Talking about Obata's art, I remember Death Note's cops (Matsuda, Mogi and most notably Aizawa) and how much their designs changed as their roles grew in importance.
I also read in an interview Obata saying he usually dislike the design of the characters in the beggining of his stories (because he's still getting used to them) and that's why they change over time.
But in the case of Bakuman, I do feel he's getting lazy in his drawings: the overall level of detail dropped and most designs are simplified. I think he needs a break to rest (like Mashiro:p)

thats exactly how i feel, the art is getting a little better, but hes also not adding some of the key qualities of the characters...:blink

I disagree. The characters of Death Note were very detailed because the tone of the story was more serious and epic. He's using an art style for a new manga about youth, so of course the art won't be that much more detailed than in Death Note. Can you imagine what the characters of Bakuman would look like if the designs was like Death Note's?

Please, I'm not comparing Bakuman with Death Note, they're completely different kind of stories and I'm aware of that. The level of detailed dropped within Bakuman itself. Just check the first dialogue Mashiro and Takagi had in the first chapter and take a look in the latest chapters, you will probably notice the difference.
Bakuman in the beginning somewhat kept the style of Obata's latest work before it, Blue Dragon (Mashiro looks pretty much like Ral). One thing I love in Obata's art is his smooth lineart, how he gives his characters a feel of both realism and shojo-esque expressiveness.
Obata is also compulsive about clothing and hairs, and he usally bring those with absurdly intricate detail and variety.
In the latest chapters, the overall art looks cheaper - the character composition noticeably looks simplified , the expressions more exagerated and the amount of visual gags is staggering (can you find ANY in the first chapters?). It looks too much cartoony, losing the realist feel that is Obata's trademark.
The guy is way too much perfeccionist to change like this on purpose. Proof: once in a while, he brings some good shots (the last one being Eiji's serious look) and the cover art for the tankobon are as amazing as ever. He just needs time and rest to come back in shape - if Bakuman is indeed somewhat autobiographical, well, the last chapter might be trying to tell something about its artist...

Sorry, but it seemed like you were comparing Death Note to Bakuman on your previous post. Honestly though, I kind of like the current art style better. Maybe because I'm a fan of comedy mangas, and I like the comical expressions they make. I'm not really good with contrasting things, so I don't really see much difference between the first chapter and the current besides the comedic expressions.

This might be old news to some, but I thought I'd give heads up to the rest. Yahoo!Japan Auctions are currently flooded with Crow notebooks. Well, maybe not exactly "flooded", but there was not a lot of Bakuman items last time I searched and I was surprised to see these. Not being able to read Japanese, I can't say much, but seems like some time ago you could fill in an application form to receive a notebook and then.. wait to see if you're lucky, I guess? All descriptions say that it is a "prize" and there was a total of 55000 copies printed — it's not much comparing to WSJ circulation.. That could be very off, though, so if someone knows more, please share. I am stopping rambling.
It's a blank book, designed to appear as your usual tankobon, but without the dust cover, with Eiji's comments on the front flap. The following photos are property of Y!J users a2very (http://user.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/show/aboutme?userID=a2very) and baby_do2 (http://user.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/show/aboutme?userID=baby_do2); I uploaded them on my photobucket because when auctions are closed, images that go with description get taken down.

If you are a collector and want one of those, I would advise you to get it now, while they are all ~new~, shiny and unpacked. ;)
PS: Do you think there should be an official merchandise thread? Shueisha keeps adding goods to Bakuman section (https://www2.shueisha.co.jp/CGI/mekke/shop/list.cgi?key=&m_id=037&g_seq=&work_seq=0123) of their store.

On another note: seems like Viz's licensing Bakuman (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2009-07-24/viz-shonen-jump-adds-bakuman-toriko-manga). Congrats to American readers. :amuse

Did you see that Bakuman won an award in Japan this month? It is the Manga-Zin Award, in the first edition of the Award.

(can someone, please, translate what they say here?)
In second place, Yuki Suetsugu's Chihayafuru; then Wataru Watanabe's Yowamushi Pedal; a collection of Makoto Kobayashi's works at Seishun Shonen Magazine (1978-1983); and finally Tamiki Wakaki's The World God Only Knows.

Don't get too excited since it viz I'm sure there will be some censoredship to make it more "for every one"
Like smoking for example I'm sure they will edit that since they don't want to encourage kids to smoke
I'm sure there a lot of people who don't like the art to be tempered with

Did we see an underaged kid smoking? There's no Shikamaru in this. The only ones we see smoke are Hattori and Mashiro's Uncle.
Sanji smokes in One Piece, Bo-bobo & Co smokes in BOBOBO-BO BO-BOBO, Hijikata smokes in Gintama, but they didn't change anything because they are adults, and most of it is rated T or T+ by Viz

It is now 5.37am....I spent the last 13 hours reading this all 48 chapters of this manga and I am EXTREMELY happy with it.....Personally I've been more into the "battle mangas' like Naruto and Bleach and didn't expect to like this one so much. I decided to start reading it after a few people suggested it on the fun forum so I gave it a shot and ended up surprising myself. I love how the plots so simple and yet its so unique and effective. Its nothing I would ever expect to read and yet its done a great job of captivating me :D. Can't wait for the next chapter ;)

Sorry for the necroposting, but there's something I want to share with you as a mangaka to other readers of a story about mangakas.
Yesterday, I had another nightmare about me as a mangaka...!!
Let me tell you about the first one, which I had few weeks ago...
I remember it was a night time, standing in front of a white rectanguler building.
I got in, and there was only one room with a female editor sitting on her desk.
I handed to her my manga series manuscripts and asked her if her company will publish it.
While she was reading it, she bursted out laughing!! But she was not laughing like after seeing a joke, no...
She was laughing at MY entire work like she was MAKING FUN AT ME AND MY SERIES!
The last thing I remember, is walking slowly outside the room/buliding, and I kept hearing her laughing out loud like crazy!!
I woke up, and to tell you the truth... my spirit was shattered big time for days and didn't draw anything new!!
But I got over it, and things went normal... until last night...!!
-----------------------------------------------
I had another nightmare!!
This time, I was with a man, and talked with him more about my series.
But, he told me that he WON't publish my manga, because HE says so!!
I argued with him alot, but the guy was stubborn as a mule!!
And then, I had enough with him and left the place full of anger.
The last thing I remember, is sitting in a dark appartment-like room, sitting in front of a computer, and that's it.
God... I hate having mental nightmares that breaks your spirit and self-esteem!!

I'm happy to know that many mangakas gather in this forum.. :)

I actually... did approach to a publishing company and talked directly with the founder!
It's called PageFlip (http://www.pageflip.ae/pageflip.html), and they started last summer.
Since it's still new, they still arn't capable of doing much.
But I gave him my manga, and he will check it and hopfully gives me an approavel.
Isn't it cool to live the tension of Bakuman in real life?

Thank you for your concerns everyone. :amuse
Oh, and about my stories... I plan on translating them in the near future.
Even though I made it exclusive to the main forum I host it in, I'll make an exeption for this site.
When the current arc is done, it'll sign the end of the first main saga out of four.
When that's done, I'll try to finish the "cough* pilot version ((Who the hell heard of a mangaka doing the pilot after starting the main series?!:blink)) in both Arabic and English. And when it's done, I'll post the raws with the translation.
Now, I'm drawing episode 50 of the series, and it'll be a full-colored 25 pages.:tem

Have you tried with your local publishing companies?
BTW... here in the U.A.E., we have two manga-based comic series'.
The first one is called "خيال" "Khayal" ((Imagenation)).

The first ((and most famous)) story is called "مالك" "Malik" by Ahmed AlMansory who is well known for his art that mimics the style of Masashi Kishimoto.
It's an Action-Adventure story set in an Arabian Desert style, and it's centers around a boy named Malik, and some others like Sultan, a man with the ability to talk with his falcon and his family, and they all encounter starnge demonic people and other sorts of things in their travellings.

The G-pen is mega hard to used. But it's pretty easy to tell whether a person pretended that they used a G-pen and just went over the lines to make it thicker (shoujo mangas comes to mind). G-pens just requires practice I guess....I barely used them and they're just collecting dust in this little blue pencil case.
The guy who draws Miku Falls is pretty skilled, but his style can only be called manga influenced. It's actually fairly easy to tell whether a fanart is from Deviantart or Pixiv, at least the best artists. The Japanese fanarts tend to have more pastel like colours and have very thin inking while Westen fanarts are brighter with stronger lines.
Today I just had a chat with this friend (who I met on this online game) asking about whether he sees yaoi undertones with Reborn. His reply was 'It started as a gag manga and it turned into a battle manga'. My response was that he definitely read Bakuman. Bakuman really has changed its readers view on manga forever.

Man, @SHINOBI-san, that's the most amusingly awesome post I've seen in weeks, in ANY forum. Especially, but not only, because of how those authors kept cultural elements of their own people to do their stories.
You know, I live in Brazil, and most pro writers here keep with the old medieval fantasy idea because nobody bothers trying to go further into our own culture and history.
Whenever anyone tries, people get the feeling it's kind of forced nationalism - we're not very proud of our history, but there ARE interesting facts that could make for nice plots, and our folklore is extremely rich thanks to the native indigenous people, but we are so massacred by internetional influence (mostly north-american culture) that most brazilians don't care about it anymore, instead recurring to:
A - Stories about fictional universes, mostly fantasy settings;
B - Ridiculous stories based on Japanese customs - written by people whose only knowledge of Japanese culture comes from manga/anime;
C - Super Hero stories that seem to take place somewhere in North America.
And it's a shame. We could do better.
As a side note, I would like to ask if there's some kind of influence from local religions on the media produced in the United Arab Emirates - comics included? Or you're free to write about any subject? I'm just curious, since I've heard your place is kinda liberal compared to some other Middle East countries.

A - Stories about fictional universes, mostly fantasy settings;
B - Ridiculous stories based on Japanese customs - written by people whose only knowledge of Japanese culture comes from manga/anime;
C - Super Hero stories that seem to take place somewhere in North America.
I feel guilty after reading this... but unlike any casual fan who does somthing based directly on a manga he just read, I did about two years of researches and reading historical and picture books before I start my manga. Plus it was an idea I had for about 6 years ago.
I plan to do a comic starring Emarati people, but after I finish what I've started. And yes, I'll change the genre.
My next comic would be a Sci-Fi / Mecha / Alien Invasion - esque series.

Yeah, we put the culture and religion in our top priority. We can't and we are not allowed to publish anything that depicats Gods, Angels, prophits in any way, especially in a humilating form ((like a certin South Park and Family Guy)). And we can't publish sexual and scandalist materials because that's another No No.
Here, comics are meant to be enjoyed by kids and sometimes by grounups, but it's content must not exceed a "PG" rating. A "+13" is possible, but it usually contains more violence and more complex story and nothing else.
If it happens and someone "dared" to publish what mentioned above... he would get sued, the publishing company might get closed, and the worst... sentenced to jail.
When I talked to Mr. Qais Sedki, he said it's not necessary to have the comic based in the U.A.E. just as long as it does not cross any of the mentiond red lines.

If you're aiming towards the japanese public I suppose that's reasonable. I just think people from one's country might enjoy a story much more if they can identify with the setting more easily, rather than requiring them to plow through an alien culture they know nothing about.
The kind of story I mentioned on B is most apreciated by people who already knows and enjoy japanese stuff; not a large chunk of Brazilian population, in my case - and I suppose not that many people in Dubai either. However, possibly the kind of public who read the magazine you mentioned probably would appreciate this kind of story.
Also, thanks for the insight! That was some nice info right there. The more you know!

Oh, relax. We had Arabic dubbed anime since the late 70's and early 80's. It's not something new. Although it was treated like any regualar cartoon.
Nowadays, anime is even more well known to almost everyone from Arabic dubbed anime to downloaded episodes, and DVDs are starting to show up, ((AND I GOT THE NEW DRAGON BOX !!!!)). And manga is really popular among Arabic fans thanks to scanlations. And we ended up having a Kinokoniya store that have both Engllish and Japanese manga not availabe online. And to the extent of having a sushi restaurant with manga for customers to read!
It's like what Takagi said in Ch.1: "Japanese manga is a global phenomenon now." If it's not in Japanese style, it doesn't get much attention. Hell... even American cartoons are starting to copy the Japanese style of drawing ((Megas XLR, Ben10, Avatar)).
Even Mashiro stated it was difficult to use. I tried using it along with the Kabura and Maru pens. The Kabura pen is easier to use and I suggest for newbies to start with it before they get to use the G because it's so damn hard to get the thickness you want with it! I switched using regular pens beacuse of that.

well ive been drawing in a g-pen for about a year and i gues when you first start off the lines do become thick and also ink splatters everywhere but for me i got used to it after a month or so, so i sugest for anyone who asspires to become a mangaka use a g-pen. After a while it becomes so easy and now i can practically draw anything i want with it. On bakuman you see mangaka drawing backgrounds with kabura pens but i tried that and its nothing but a pain so thats why when i draw backgrounds with a ruler i use a fine liner pen so i can get in the fine lines of the backgrounds
i know this is kinda off topic but i wanna talk about what makes a manga so appealing and thats the style. I think if you want to become a mangaka you need your own style. This makes a huge improvement to your work which also connects to using certain pens. Depending on what pens u use you can set your own style so i think its also good to draw with what you feel comfortable drawing with instead of trying to draw in a pen that u cant do much with

Nowadays there's so much mangas, it's hard to really have a unique style. If a style is too unique, it may push away alot of readers (points at self). But if it's too generic, then it's hard to attract readers from the first place. Very few mangakas can manage a visually appealing style and still being unique. I think it's just better to go with the flow, if your style happen to be generic, then let it be generic. Forcing yourself to change it is doing to be hard. I ended up with some generic shoujo + moe + yaoi-ish style....

In the end I didn't go for G-pen or Kabura pens. I do like the maru-pen, that's quite easy to use, I just use it to the while picture and get really fine lines. I went for digital inking, obviously it has its own advantages, but has alot of flaws too. My left wrist has some weird condition where there's a little bump, because my left hand is used to press ctrl+z. The bump appears if I start drawing on the comptuer about 3 days in a roll but it would go away once I give my left hand a rest (I really should go to the doctors.... And nothing compares on drawing paper compared to a tablet+screen. I seem to be too lazy to tidy up with tradition media, digital media is perfect for lazy people :p.
Anyway, I have no plans to be a mangaka or comic artist. If I'm lucky, I might become a doujinka or something. I only draw what I like to draw, so a doujinka is the way to go for me.
I've read some Hong Kong chinese and Taiwanese chinese manga (shoujo). The ones I read were awful. Especially that Selena Lam, how long has she been drawing? Her art is still awful, she still can't draw eyes that's balanced on both sides. Plus her stories are confusing, generic, characters are as flat as 2D can be. But I do give her the credit of drawing traditional Chinese manga, too bad my chinese is too bad to tell whether her poems are any good. She did release one thing good, I liked her how to draw shoujo manga book. It's a good choice for any 12 year olds who wants to learn. I only read a chapter or two from the Hong Konger mangakas, some, the art was the type where they pretend they were good. The ones with LOTS of details in the hair eyes and clothes yet the proportions were awful. There's some chinese mangakas I seen that has 'pretty' art which do have good proportions, but are non are memorable. Anyway, right now I don't have a good impression on chinese shoujo mangakas or mangas.
Actually, some of the good mangas may not have the best art. Ookiku Furikabutte has some pretty medicore art, but it own the Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize. Good story telling + word of mouth> pretty art. Although pretty art gets more attention at the start.

I have Niizuma's early problem of not drawing anything twice. If I draw something and then scan it and trace and edit digitally, it'll feel like I'm drawing the same thing twice.
So, yeah. I'm lazy, and I like to draw everything digitally with my tablet and Photoshop because it saves the time for all that. Plus it's easier to edit the drawings that way for me.

Speaking of art style, I was noted that it looks similer to Akira Toriyama's early Drgaon Ball style! Which is kinda true, since I practiced with the first and only manga volume I had at that time ((Dragon ball vol. 9)). You can check my art in my Deviantart page: http://shinobi-03.deviantart.com and tell me about my style.

You should get a tablet, since you'll be able to use digital-tones and probably saves you traditional some money from buying the screen tones. It's a shame that amazon doesn't sell that 28 quid wacom anymore, that cheapo tablet still lasted me 3 years (I think it still works). Tablet + GIMP should be enough to for screen toning, of course you could always get photoshop with student version (or the infamous alternative method).

The problem is that he is in the UK. I know the difficulties of getting good manga supplies here (I bought all mine from Hong Kong), I got quite pissed when I found out it costed 5 pounds per copic pen when it's 5 dollars in the US. That is mostly why I do all my stuff digitally, once you get a tablet you can pretty much do everything.
Real manga paper is real manga paper, the ink is much smoother on it. But if you're going to scan it and edit it on the computer, good quality printing paper does the job. You know the good quality printing paper that sells for 5 quid for 500 sheets, just not the Tesco value ones and you're fine.
I think it's more important to get the basics right first, before getting all these expensive crapstuff.

as for the paper i asked my japanese teacher and she said that she has a freind in japan who draws doujinshi and he recommended the paper that i use. Basically its just the rough outline shape of were the lines would be on real manga paper without all the measurements. I have the outline shape saved onto my computer so i just print it onto card
it does the same job

as for the talk about manga art supplies, i want to give out my own opinion:
DON'T!
We live in a modern area, so use the tools you grew up with!
Don't know what i am talking about? COMPUTERS.
Nowdays, you can archive the SAME(maybe even better if you are experience enough) results with computer supplies(that everyone is able to get in the uk or europe) as traditional stuff.
Of course, the same rule applies as to tradiotional supplies: It's only worth spending money for if you are already experienced enough in art and actually has the will to go pro.(that is, of course, something everyone has to decide for himself, though usually others who are already on pro level give out advices)
i don't like to call me "pro" because i actually haven't sold any manga yet*haha* but it will be soon(as if not every noob ever has said that)
but even though my first book will be sold soon, i still try out many different methods of drawing to improve manga art(with that i mean being able to draw good pictures "faster")

well, times are changing, nowdays a lot more parents worry way too much what their children are reading. This is most likely the case why no one dies in bleach/naruto/onepiece(except for important deaths)
but something like that manga is a bit too extreme with humans dieing left and right.
Even something like deathnote is on the borders, but considering we rarely saw someone dieing(and even if, they only died by a heartattack) it was ok to publish it

Names are actually nothing more than story-boards
you draw the manga in a sketchy form,so that you don't spend to much time on it
here is an example directly from Bakuman http://mangahelpers.com/downloads/read-online/20248/31?t=1265057913
they are for the editors,so that they can see how the chapter will be,with the different panels and the story for the chapter and the editor can speak about them and change them
it's better like this
imagine having a full script allready with backgrounds and everything inked and then the editor tells you to change it^^
hope that helped you,if not, then feel free to ask again:XD

Hey,all bakuman fans!
Lately I was thinking about "Ashirogi Muto" and how Miyoshi created it.
It could be explained but i don`t think so:P
So,we start with "Ashirogi"-from Mashiro we get"Ashiro" and from Takagi we get "gi".
And "Muto".I think it`s "M" from Mashiro, "U" from Shujin, "T" from Takagi and "O" from Saiko
As i said,if it was explained then don`t shoot me for wasting space:)

That, I believe, is Toriko's author. He got in trouble almost a decade ago for child prostitution.
But Toriko itself is a great series. I think I'd be happier, you know, not knowing too much about what goes on in the lives of the people who make the series I read. Bad enough that Togashi mentions over and over in the ToC comments how much time he spends playing Dragon Quest. Keep cranking out those chapters.

Hey guys,I think that bakuman will end just in few chapters...and you?
I mean,Hattori planned all this for them to do a good manga+it`s a last chance to be in WSJ,so i think PCP is the final series.
Of course,by getting kicked from WSJ there opens a new plot to extend the manga, but i don`t think so...So predict guys!:P

Seems like it could be. The fact that we're getting one of the series from the story as a special chapter makes me think they are ready to wrap things up.

I doubt that its going to be over so soon. This story is something of a Bildungsroman, in other words, a story which focuses on the psychological and moral growth of the protagonist from youth to adulthood. Yes they are technically adults now, but they just started their new series, so they still have a lot to grow. The manga might end when they get an anime, but I think they're still going to create another series (named Bakuman perhaps :P?), as an example of Mangaka who create a succesful series, and the afterwards an even more succesful series (like Togashi with Yuu Yuu Hakusho and Hunter x Hunter).
Its definitely going to last longer than Death Note, despite its very fast pace.

Some time ago I thought the series was going to an end. But reading the recent chapters the felling is the complete opposite. Now I think that they'll continue in WSJ, PCP'll get an anime, then we'll have an "anime arc", then they'll end PCP and start working on a new series. The problem here will be that PCP'll probably be a huge success and than they'll have a "what to do next as good as the last one" arc.
And these are just my basic predictions. I have a lot more. It's interesting to make predictions and see if they'll really happen or not. :P

Lolwhut? If they are actually able to do a series that will be better than natural and crow, then there is no way it will end just like that. Thats not how shonen jump works

i know what he meant, but like i said, thats not how shonen jump works. If something is popular, you continue to do it, wether you like it or not. Thats why bleach, naruto, dragonball etc. are where they are now. And thats why series like eyeshield21 got forced to continue after the moment where it was suppose to end(and then got cancelled because the forced continuation sucked, similar to what happened to deathnote)

July 29, 2010, 01:00 AM
Well... We cant predict what's going on, but I'm pretty sure they will finish PCP in a near future. They'll be more popular than Eiji's series, but then, Eiji will come with something even better! That's Bakuman... that's how BAKUMAN works.

July 29, 2010, 01:05 AM
The only person who can say how Bakuman works is Eiji, as the story is actually being written by him. The series is going to end by panning out and showing that Eiji is actually writing everything that has happened as a third series for Jump.

Just started reading Bakuman. Chapter 1 was interesting but ch 2 was boring, too much talking, some talks like 'who is smart and not' seem less important. But then I guess I have to bear with these talking and will keep on reading. I picked this manga because I want to know more about how publications work, mangaka's life and how they think and do etc !! I'm sure it will get interesting. Actually, I read ch.96 few weeks ago. That chapter talked about how rankings work in Jump. So I picked this series to know more.

Definitely keep reading it! Its a manga that progresses with the careers of the mangaka so you will definitely get the insight you want into the process behind manga and its presented in a way that you get to love certain characters. As well it is presented in the perfect shounen way that you get the feeling or reading something awesome and epic when in actuality you just reading about mangakas writting manga. At the simplest form it really is just that, the process for mangakas and their manga and also their personal lives, but it gets much more complicated than that and gets presented in a very good way that keeps you reading. There is even the sense of competition and urgency when they put everything they got into trying to achieve something. If your someone who likes a well written and presented shounen and also wants to learn about the manga process then this is just for you. I hope you keep reading it and I hope to see you post more around here if you do :).

Searched google for it, but I don't know which one it really is, since there seems to be quite a bit.
This is in chapter 76.
Eiji does not use a kanji, actually - he uses ライバル (raibaru), katakana which well, literally translates to "rival" :) However, he does go on to describe them as 「僕が一番好きでライバルであるマンガ家です」(the mangaka I like the best and who are my rivals). So it's not a single word that expressed the bit about Ashirogi both being rivals and friends to Eiji, but a phrase so to speak. Also, if you need to know the question, the TV host had asked who his enemy (敵) was.
Hope this helped :amuse

Just a heads-up to anyone living under a rock with regards to this :amuse
There will be no Bakuman chapter this week (or we should say next week which would be the official release date in Japan). Last issue was a double-issue. Expect the next chapter around the end of the year (30~31 Dec 2010 for spoilers + scanlation). The official release date for that chapter would be 4th Jan 2011.
Also, the following week will also be a break week. So the next next chapter of Bakuman (116) will be out on 18th Jan 2011 officially, but spoilers and scanlations can be expected around the 13th or 14th :)
If you're Bakuman-deprived as a result, I suggest posting some of whatever wild theories or ideas or thoughts you have on the series in the various discussion threads! :ohaielmo

I thought this too, and posted that in the 118 discussion (but was kinda ignored :s)~ Well, I for one would not want Nanamine to succeed using this method of his, much less even get to the level of popularity and hype that Shingeki no Kyojin has.
As far as I know, the author of Shingeki no Kyojin didn't use any methods that were like what Nanamine's using, and besides, his art is nowhere near as good so I wouldn't call him a genius at all. While I've only read 1 volume, so far Shingeki n Kyojin doesn't seem THAT gripping or sensational, not in the way Shinjitsu no Kyoushitsu is made out to be like.

Maybe they will, sometime in the future :amuse I wonder if Ohba-sensei would end up working with Obata-sensei for a third time, though.
Honestly speaking I think Bakuman could be used as a sort of testing ground for Ohba-sensei's ideas. If s/he can describe the series through one of the mangaka in Bakuman, and Bakuman fan response is good, then Ohba-sensei would know that this is a series worth exploring in the future. S/he could even put out a one-shot under the guise of it being a spin-off from Bakuman (just like Otter #11) and see the response.
Death Note was good, and Ohba-sensei played the mystery/suspense card well. But what I like best about him/her is his/her versatility! It always amazes me how vastly different Death Note and Bakuman are, and yet how good both are :)

Well, Bakuman isn't the only manga about the manga publishing industry :amuse There's also Mangaka-san to Assistant-san to (http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=16197). It's interesting though, that this guy is actually getting published by the very manga industry he's bashing.
And the name "Bokuman" might be a play on "Bakuman", which is interesting too. Maybe he's making a point about the fact that the way the manga industry works in Japan doesn't let one write manga the way one wants to - "boku no manga" (my manga). Or like you said, an autobiographical kind of thing.
I'm curios about this series name. What does 'Bakuman' mean ? Why did they keep this name ?

Baku = 爆 from 爆発 (bakuhatsu), which means explosion. "Baku" on its own means an exclamation.
Man = 漫 from 漫画 (manga).
So you could say it's something like "explosive manga" or "manga explosion" or "manga exclamation" :amuse

I think Bakuman its a combination from:
Baku:
- Bakuhatsu(bomb)
- Bakuchi(gambling)
- Baku (monster which eat dreams)
Man:
-Probably from MANga.
Some theories suggest that its the name of the manga that the duo will publish and will final get an anime and all that, and I kinda like how all "Baku" meanings have some sort of relation to Bakuman, but specially the monster which eat dreams, because Bakuman in its core is all about people´s dreams.
@Saladesu: Yeah I thought so too, the "Boku No Manga" phrase, seems likely too.
EDIT: Holy sh1t! Now that I think about it Bakuman would be a good name for a series that finally gets an anime, the premise could be a Baku-man LOL (A monster which eat dreams i.e. BAKU, but is a huMAN) I imagine is something the duo could do, specially given how it would be not so mainstream like their usually targeted audience.

Oh, right, I forgot about the Bakuchi (mentioned a lot at the start of Bakuman - bakuchiuchi/gambler) and Baku references :shakefist

All this talk about the Bakuman title makes me wonder why there are two diifferent translated Chinese versions. I've seen it being called 爆漫, where the first kanji means explosion and the latter is the "man" in manga, and the other more widely used is 食梦者 which has a completely different meaning. Literally meaning "person who eats dreams", which I'll credit it to really mean "Dream chaser" referring to Mashiro and Azuki's promise.

If baku and man were supposed to mean Baku, a kind of imaginary animal that is said to feed on dream, and Manga respectively, the problem would be that of deciding the relation between them.
There is one very famous manga-industry manga whose title includes one animal and manga as well, it is "Saru demo kakeru manga kyoushitsu," which is almost always shorten as SaruMan; its official English title is Even a Monkey Can Draw Manga (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/house-of-1000-manga/2010-07-15).
So I think that we may translate Bakuman in a parallel manner into even a baku can draw manga, or rather, Only a Baku Can Draw Manga!

I'm a bit confused by this piece of news, but I think the official anime websites may update with more info on Monday (the day Jump is supposed to go on sale). When that happens I'll update here too.
Anyway, according to this page (http://www.manga4lifez.com/bakuman/bakuman-122/02-1052.html#joomimg), it seems Obata will be drawing 4 manga manuscripts: TRAP (Ashirogi Muto), KIYOSHI (Fukuda), hideout door (Aoki x Nakai) and Colorfusical (KOOGY) :D Either I'm blind or I can't seem to find anything about where we are going to find these.
I'm guessing it will be in the anime itself...? I'm really not sure. Either way, this does sound exciting. Vastly different art styles will be a treat from Obata, not to mention just being able to read these 4 mangas like we were able to read Otter #11. However, since it's "manuscript" I dunno if it's gonna be the full version...

By the time Toriyama finally ended Dr. Slump, it must have seemed like he couldn't get any more successful… or maybe he just wondered what he would do next. Enter the manga editor. The fundamental clash in every manga artist's life is between the artist and their editor, who is sometimes the artist's friend but also has the job of keeping them on schedule and pressuring them to take the more commercial path. Toriyama's editor was Kazuhiko Torishima, who was immortalized as the evil Dr. Mashirito in Dr. Slump; Torishima is still in the industry today and even appears under his own name in Bakuman., in which he is depicted ripping an artist's original artwork to shreds just to shock them into producing better work.
Can someone point out to me which chapter that had this Torishima guy in Bakuman???
saladesu
March 11, 2011, 08:45 AM
I don't remember this guy appearing, so if he did appear it wasn't as his own name o.o
I think Sasaki may be based off him though? We don't know enough about Sasaki in real life (afaik), though there is a real-life Sasaki who looks like the Sasaki in Bakuman... I mean, Hattori Akira takes his name from the real-life OP editor Hattori Akira, but his appearance is totally different, so it's possible Bakuman's Sasaki's traits were taken from this Torishima.

Sasaki is the editor in chief. The guy Ashirogi go to see when they want to get Tanto canceled :)
Hmm, if it was a New Year Party (or a function, in any case) that Torishima appeared at, then why was he ripping someone's manuscript up? :XD (did this happen? Or did the article get its facts wrong?)

I don't know if any of you had watched it already or not... there is an episode in Saki-Yomi Jump Bang TV show in which they compare the editors in Bakuman with their models.

When Mashiro talks about an editor who moved him towards the end of Volume 1, we seen an editor who looks sort of like Torishima. It's not acknowledged that it's him but people assume so since Mashiro said he ended up becoming editor in chief. Torishima does show up in volume 5 though and makes an "inspiring(?)" speech to Ashirogi.

Well,Hoshino-sensei(D.Gray-man) had two different editors in JUMP.The first one was Yoshida, which i think was the inspiration for Yoshida-shi in Bakuman.Hoshino always suffered under him nearly the same way Hiramaru is suffering(thinking about it now, this makes me love Hiramaru even more:lmao).Somewhere around volume 13 her new editor became Nakaji(i think that was his name). In 2009 she moved to Square and got a new editor(can't think of his name now),so during those 5 years in JUMP she had two editors, which means that 2 years seems like the average time for an editor.
I wonder how many editors Kochikame had.

Thanks for the info, Googz! That was interesting - I didn't know D.G-M also underwent such frequent (?) editor changes. I also wonder how many Kochikame has had, or other of Jump's longer series like Naruto and Bleach, and if such frequent editor changes are evident in Jump/Shueisha only.

I'm sure they do. I don't think there is ANY series out there without an editor, no matter how experienced the mangaka may be. Even Kochi Kame has an editor and Akimoto has been at it for more than 35 years (more than enough time to gain lots and lots of experience!), even the best-selling One Piece has an editor. Maybe the editor just has less work to do because of the experience they have, but each series should definitely still have an editor.
And like you said, they'd definitely need an editor to tell them if and when they step over any lines in criticizing Shueisha/revealing too much etc :p

May 21, 2011, 01:09 PM
@alphabeta - Having an editor is the best thing a person could possible have, they are basically your sponsor and communicator to the publishing company. The best thing is probably that they pick up the manuscripts so you don't have to go turn them in every week. I don't know if some doesn't have one though, most likely everyone at shueisha does.

Bakuman is the sixth best-selling manga for the first half of 2011, according to Oricon (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2011-05-31/top-selling-manga-in-japan-by-series/2011-first-half) :fiesta Not to mention having volumes rank in at #17 (vol 11) and #24 (vol 12) on the top 50 volumes chart (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2011-05-31/top-selling-manga-in-japan-by-volume/2011-first-half) :)
Most surprising perhaps is the fact that it beat Bleach in overall sales for the first half of 2011. It is probably the anime's effect on boosting sales of its earlier volumes though. But I suspect it will not be very long before Bakuman overtakes Bleach in average volume sales :amuse
sir_arles

But I don't really think it will top Bleach in average volume sales in the future. I hope I'm wrong, though. No bleach fan here, and I do recognize it's been struggling lately popularity-wise... but I see bakuman as a cult manga, not a mainstream one, so maybe that's the reason why I think it won't overtake a typical famous battle manga like Bleach.
Once again, I hope I'm wrong =P

Even Death Note had a video game to its name, though it probably has a better premise. But still, would be hilarious if somebody ever attempted one. I would put good money on it being a dating sim.

I can see it more of an RPG, you know. Power-ups are new drawing techniques or different pens. Fighting against other players/mangaka is by competing in the ToC results. Something like that.
Or it could be from the editor's POV. Similiar to a football management game.

Well, well, well, seems like a lot of things are going on in this week's release... Love the cover! And is it just me or the girl on Miho's right is kinda hot? Were it Japanese I would have at least a bit of understanding, dang the language barrier!
I liked that the middle schoolers came up to talk to Mashiro! Somehow very refreshing. Can't wait for a detailed summary now and I damn hope we get to see more of that girl on the right haha ;D

Slogan on the title page: The battle between the girls begins.
We begin with Mashiro is having breakfast. He is being bugged by both the tv show and his mom talking about his relationship.
Mashiro stops by a store and gets recognize by a few students from his old high school. They asks for his signature
Back to the workshop, Kaya has a magazine that rank the vocal actress weekly. Miho has gotten to third place.
Kaya suggests perhaps by next week, Miho will reach first place.
Takagi says it will be less likely because the votes are mostly from fans. Most fans still feel negative about the relationship and marriage. However, Takagi suggests other than these fans, most people are very positive about the relationship. With that support, Miho should gets the part without a problem.
Mashiro reply, Can that be consider getting the part with her own ability right??
Takagi says Mashiro is over thinking it.
Both of them go back on finishing the name.
Miho receives a commercial deal. However she wants to spend more time practicing for the role.
The agent suggests the commercial will help boost her fame, and help her with the testing.
but Miho still denies and she says getting the part with hard work, and bringing out a performance that will get everyone's recognition is more important anything right now.
The production house is having discussion about the relationship.
Thanks to the relationship, the animation also gets alot more attention.
The director Ehara wishes to find the right voice through testing.
the producer Konaka says yes, but in terms of fame or noise, Miho will win for sure.
At the meeting, Hattori compliment the two always able to bring out greatness at the worst situation. In his head, he believe these two kids, no with Miho's strength as well, they can all makes their dreams become reality.
Hattori says the sales has gone up. Zombie gets a million and fifty thousand copies, and Reverse has eight hundred thirty thousand copies. Takagi is excited and suggests that with the news and the noises out there, their sale with get even higher.
Mashiro is thinking if this really able to show their skills as a manga artist. Are people buying the manga really because of their talent? Even though, both Miho and himself didn't mean to create such a commotion at the beginning.
Back at Jump's office, there are still alot of phone calls reach the office about the relationship.
They are all negative about the relationship. The discussion concludes Miho being selected or not, there will be alot more phone calls coming in and bother the office.
At the meeting, the producer said he doesn't support the idea, but the director really wishes to do "this". There is no rejection yet, however, they will wait for Ashirogi's approval first...
The next day, the production team visits the workplace and have a meeting with Ashirogi there.
Two new characters present themselves from a company called Together movie.
Takagi recognizes the company being an online anime broadcast company.
It appears the production house wants to do a public vocal test.
They will select 20 vocal actors for the test, and it will be posted and voted by public.
Takagi worries it might not end well for Miho since most fans that vote won't be supportive for Miho. On top of that, since this anime is at a hot broadcasting spot, alot of the vocal actress who enters the test will be the top notch of the industry. It will be even harder for Miho to win.
The producer, Hattori and Takagi both suggests not to do this, just do a "representation" vocal test will be fine.
However, the director says he is the one proposes the public voting. He heard the radio broadcast before, and feels very touch. He believes this is the best way to show Miho can get the part with her talent and skills.
Mashiro reply,"representation" vocal test is pointless. He wants Miho to get the part more than anyone, however, it's even more important to win through real skills and talent. If this public vocal test is able to show the real skills and talent, then I agree.
Takagi suggests, this test might become more like a fame contest more than a skill contest.
Mashiro reply it's better than people call Miho takes the backdoor.
Miho has been practicing the role alot earlier than anyone. She pours her heart out to get the character right. No matter how many popular or talented vocal actress there are, Miho will beat them all. No, if she can't beat them all, she has no right to be the voice of Naho.
So please let go with the Public Vocal Test!!

If this were reality, you know the public poll will get trolled to hell and back in favour of anybody but Azuki. Takagi's earlier note about the monthly poll in Seiyuu Fan More holds some truth.
But since this is manga, I guess it'll go well in the end. Will be interesting to see how Obata and Ohba illustrate something that's more vocal-specific rather than visual. My guess would be they just come up with some seiyuu names and quickly skip to the poll and suspense...which will feel boring.

I kinda wanna support the realism because that's what keeps this manga going, even the characters are shaped to some extent after real people.

Mmm the interesting part is when they said "public"
to me its obvious that something big is going to happen when azuki is there
(like ishizawa smacks her with a pie or something)
this would never hapen in real life, they would do something online and
count votes but i think they are going to REALLY give her a bad time doing it
and she is going to show how bad she really wants to do the role
and she loses by votes but every one is touched, change their minds and credits
O and azuki and miho will get pregnant a the same time or something

So... how exactly do you drawl vocal talent? It seems rather hard. Therefore, I think if we are given any visual of the contest, then it will focus on their facial expressions and body movements while they read the parts they're buying for. I know that sounds weird, why would a Seiyuu need to act when all that's being recorded is their voice? But oddly, they get completely immersed in their rolls. Sorry if you don't like One Piece, but this is a brilliant example of what I mean. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s2TNFElEGWc So it is entirely possible to depict the contest of voices through art... rather, I feel it would be boring if they didn't include some portion of the contest in the manga, and had O&O chosen not to do the contest at all, and just give Azuki the part, it would feel too easy, too contrived.
---------- Post added at 01:05 AM ---------- Previous post was at 12:48 AM ----------
Regardless, I believe Azuki has the talent and drive to produce an amazing quality of voice acting, such that even Otakus who hate her will be drawn in by her voice. Not to mention, most Japanese people are not Otaku, and therefore, don't hold Seiyuus at the goddess standard that Otaku do. And while its true these non-Otaku are normally not the type to engage in Anime polls, it has been clearly stated that there is a significant populace of non-Otaku who have become Azuki's supporters. Whether its for her voice or her dream, I believe most of us her would vote for Azuki if such a case was exhibited in real life. Likewise, the majority of Japanese -who are clear thinkers, without the hypocracy to judge Seiyuus as their objective property to be regulated and maintained 'pure'-, will pull for her. Well at any rate, that's how the world should work, and thus that is how it will happen in jump.

...Normally yes, an anime audition is not breaking news, however we have already seen that Azuki is breaking the headlines on the newspapers, radios, and TV stations; you can't say it isn't a national affair. Furthermore, the audition to showcase Azuki's ability, is the perfect following story after everything the two said during the radio broadcast where Mashiro announced publicly that he wanted her to achieve the roll on talent alone. In fact, the anime studio is doing this audition for the simple reason that it does hold so much popularity.

It's supposed to say "becoming a flagship series won't just be a dream after all", or to that effect.
I just realized A3S used the chinese scans to translate. In the chinese scans, the sentence in question has "sign/banner" in it and they used it literally. Honestly never liked their translations after seeing two chapters from them.

This is a good view. However, the public poll is the only way Azuki can redemptively get the role of Naho and for other people not to think that she has gotten it through connections/the purity of her personal life revelations. It's actually like the director just sort of gave Mashiro and her a reprieve, that even the other leader of the anime team was doubtful. The director obviously wanted the anime to be popular on its own, not be controversial due to the events transpiring that's not even remotely related to Reversi; however, he also stated that he liked Azuki and Mashiro's story.

Yeah, A3S' tls were just odd. Even if you're tling from the Chinese scans, those were some strange conclusions to come to in terms of word choice and sentence structure.
The chapter was decent, and we'll see the Eiji of the seiyuu world next chapter, Natara-san.

Natara Kanra as the Eiji of the seiyuu world is a good way of putting it, especially as she was the voice actress for Lady Crow! She was introduced very early on in the series and had only appeared once, I didn't think we would see her again. She's the blonde on the far left in the color picture. It seems Ohba planned from the beginning to make her Azuki's rival.

I really look forward to O&O pulling off an interesting artistic view on voice acting. I don't want Azuki to get the roll easily, rather I hope she has to fight with her all to earn it in a close battle with the other Seiyuu, and that this be be displayed with masterful art. Certainly we know O&O has the ability to do so. At any rate, I can't wait until the next chapter is released, it will save me from this depression caused by the Mahou Sensei Negima failure, augh! WHY?!

It'll be predictable as of this point. Azuki will win, unless O&O are gonna troll us and make her loss and it'll back to square one yet again, dragging the story even more.

Well there are three outcomes:
1) Azuki wins, and becomes Naho.
2) Azuki is not gonna be in the anime at all
3) Azuki is not gonna become Naho - but another role.
I fail to see how any of the options is gonna troll anyone aside from readers awaiting the story to go the way they want only thus having too high expectations... And if they intend to give some background information on how Seiyuu are chosen etc. like they did with their "Jump behind the scenes" explanations I feel like looking forward in seeing more of background information.

They aren't stretching the story, I think. They just keep making us wonder if they will or not...
The dream is reaching its completion. But its path is not clear of hurdles yet.

With every chapter, Bakuman seems to be ending. But damn this one looks good, love how it completely shifted the focus to Miho and the other VA

Page 171: Microphone and Script
A scene between Takagi and Kaya. Takagi gives the low down on what just happened to Kaya. There'll be a public audition and voting scheme. 22nd of April will when they give the auditions, and then until the 26th is when voting will occur. One vote per phone. Kaya doesn't think it's a good idea since there'll be very popular and talented seiyuus too, but then thinks it's just like him to go with it.
Back at Azuki's work place, his manager is stressing out on the decision, thinking she doesn't stand a chance, but Azuki reassures him she's motivated and has confidence in winning.
We then get some screen time of two companies getting their seiyuus ready for it. One in particular is a friend of Azuki (Natara Kanra). Apparently, she's the most popular seiyuu at the moment. The other pits their hopes on Otsuki Nanakan, the 2nd most popular at the moment.
At Ashirogi Muto's studio. The announcement of Reversi's anime and the audition appears in this weeks Jump. They'll be having commercials on TV to get exposure as well, and on the the 24th when Crow ends, there'll be a trailer for Reversi too. And once the issue goes live, people are talking about it. At the bookstore, and also online. Everybody's talking about it. (And staring at it too, *cough*Ishizawa*cough*)
And all this is being closely followed by Takagi. Preliminary online polls have Azuki placed in 5th. Takagi tells Kaya not to worry, since it's just-for-fun polls, and Kaya tells him to stop making such faces if it's nothing to worry about.
Day before the auditions, on their balcony, Takagi talks about their dreams and how far they've come now and that tomorrow's the day when Azuki will stand before the microphone that will lead to her dreams. At Azuki's place, Mina, jokingly says her sister is getting marry so she's gonna be lonely now. Then gives her a lucky charm she got for her, and afterwards they go downstairs for dinner and their mother has made practically a feast for her, it's what she can do to cheer her on.
The day of the audition.
Right when Azuki gets to the venue, she's bombarded with protests ("PEOPLE WHO TAKE THE BACKDOOR SHOULD GTFO", etc).
In the backstage room where all the seiyuus are getting ready, the atmosphere is looking pretty thick. We see Azuki and her friend, Natara, say hello to each other, Otsuki says hello to Azuki, we see some fodder seiyuus gossiping about Azuki. We also see some bigshot mentor-ish seiyuu making her grand entrance, who think she'd easily take the win. Otsuki thinks (to herself) otherwise, since she's 27, no way they'll get her to voice a young high school teen. Once it begins, one by one they get called up, while Ishizawa, Mashiro and co, and even Fukuda are watching it live.
And then finally Azuki gets called up. She stands up and takes the stage. Natara notes she forgot her script. But then notices her copy is so clean, like it hasn't been used at all and there's no written notes or anything.
Azuki: "I am #7, Azuki Miho, your help is appreciated..."
Very nice chapter. The build up to the day was good. Sad we didn't get more background stuff on the main seiyuus though.
