They are gathering Aeons to create the Final Aeon.
Currently Pein(Yuna) is gathering all the bijous then possesses them to form the final Aeon to defeat Sin. Madara(Auron) himself is an unsent, having been killed by 1st Hokage (Yunalesca) a few years ago.

Plot
The word of ninja is known as Naruto. It consists of large landmass divided into 5 continents, surrounded by small hidden villages. It features diverse climates raging from tropical Konoha to dessert of Hidden sand.
Although it predominantly populated by humans, Naruto features a variety of bloodlines. Among them are the Uchiha, an advance group of humans with distinctive spiral red eyes and unique abilities. The aburame's are somewhat less human in abilities with insects housing in their bodies.
Naruto's wildlife population introduces several new concepts into the series. Although most creatures are summoned such as toads, slugs, dogs, a few large familiar species appear such as the gigantic Gamabunta.
