Discuss Komi-sensei's one shots in this thread!

About the author

Komi Naoshi is a mangaka who publishes in Jump. After a series of 3 well-received one shots published in 2007 including his debut work that won one of the highest awards ever given in Jump, Komi-sensei was finally given a series in Weekly Shounen Jump, news article (http://mangahelpers.com/forum/showthread.php/27895-Double-Arts-by-Komi-Naoshi]Double Arts. The series ran for 23 chapters (approx. 6 months). Since the end of Double Arts, Komi-sensei has been publishing oneshots in Jump SQ and WSJ.

Not long ago, xi0 and I were just discussing this author's one-shots and how great they were. Amazing that he now has a serialised work! Here's a about Komi-sensei. It basically says that even the Jump editors were surprised at his talent. The only other newcomer to have performed so well in the competition is Matsui Yuusei-sensei (Nougami Neuro). So, I really hope this series gets the interest it deserves and do well!

I finally got my JSQ, very cute story the art is pretty awesome, I was looking forward to seeing how Komi-sensei does urban futuristic and he did not disappoint. the only downer is that this seems pretty self-contained and a series is probably not doable unless it's a prequel sort of thing. Then again I would hope that Komi-sensei branches out even further to explore other story types.

The premise does seem a little weak though - what's with an entire society conditioned to wear masks? (lost in translation?:D)

I won't have time to scan this till Saturday night, but how's the quality of this scan? Does it even need another person scanning it?

It's camshot, so . . . >_<"

Plus, by the time it reaches the last page, the bubble just got stuck in the binding fold . . . so . . . it can be translated, but it surely isn't something that scanlator can produce any good scanlation from it . . . >.>" (since we have the binding problem, the page is not straight, some part got cut out by the margin of the scans, and bleeding problem as well . . . >_<")

I'd say . . . yep, someone else should scan it. Nothing can really be done much from this one.

Good manga though. Interesting. Too bad it's just an one shot . . . :p

I (as part of Nihil Sine Nefas (http://mangahelpers.com/s/nihilsinenefas)) put up a scanlation of the existing camshot & Kirimi's translation. I had to use a PHP script to remove (as much as I could) the distortion from the angle of the camshot, and some gradients to equal out the lighting, but of course it still came out pretty LQ (and since I did it all last night, the cleaning got pretty crappy towards the end).

It's here (http://mangahelpers.com/s/nihilsinenefas/details/4473), for any interested parties. We'll probably release a higher-quality version if someone scans it and posts the raws.

i have to agree, it was very good, i also picked up on the metaphor of the masks, which is very much komi's style. but again, it shows his gooie-two-shoes side, where every story has a moral of some sort written within it and is revealed at the end.
i like that about him, but i'm sure younger readers look at it as old fasioned or lame.. which is one reason why younger people didnt like double arts, it didn't have enough action or ecchi per chapter to attract the younger readers like naruto, bleach, & To-Love-Ru do. there was only one maybe 2 ecchi-ish scenes with Elle in the shower, and the action was just about to get going as it ended.

let's hope with what ever komi comes up with next, it will do well and not have any "anti-fans"...lol

Considering that I still think DArts wasn't cancelled for mere popularity reasons, they probably try to get him back with a different concept seeing that he gets two oneshots in such a short time.

Hello Baby and Personant are the two best oneshots I ever read. I tend to dislike pilot oneshots that set up a series but are just oneshots. I wonder why some artists bother making a first chapter of a series if they already made a pilot that sets up the same premise and characters with no differences. Kind of like Toriko.

December 08, 2008, 07:02 PM
Most one-shots are used as a way to sell a possible series to the publisher. But Komi's one-shots tend to be self-contained and wrap themselves up so there's no chance of a series. The only exception I think is Koi no Kami-sama ...which became Double Arts:XD

Neji2112
December 08, 2008, 08:45 PM
wow, i had never heard of Koi no Kami-sama, but i found it @ mangatraders and downloaded it. it was pretty good. i kind of like island and personant better, but it's got it's own feel compaired to the others, and is set in modern times, which is unusual for Komi.

I think I uploaded the raw, but I have no idea if I even uploaded it to the right place (I'm terribly confused by the new system) or if it is still even needed. Once the translator I'm working with is done with his translation, I'll do an MQ scanlation.

The part about Damore having Personant powers and at the same time having the ability to nullify Personant... it reminded me of the implied link between Kiri's powers and the Gazelle.

Plus Damore's capriciousness and brooding good looks made me think he could be a descendant of Sui and Farran.:XD

Notice how the girl is in space floating above the earth? That girl has to have a significant role.

Very quick summary because I have to get back to work:
The main character (the blond ponytailed guy - yeah, guy) is Aramiya Satoshi, who main ability is shapeshifting into any animal ...though at a few points he has plants growing out of him, so my guess is he can shapeshift into any living thing (including an elephant and a lion) I'm not sure if he was naturally born that way or if he was a biological experiment. Anyway, he's a pretty easygoing guy who just wants to be left alone to enjoy his solitary life in the middle of a junkyard, but apparently some army or another is always after him because of his ability, though he is able to fight off entire tank battalions before breakfast.

The story is somewhat serious with a few funny bits - on the same level as Double Arts. Like Personant, though, I can't see this becoming a series.

Now, you can use this thread to discuss any of his oneshot works! Please keep Double Arts discussions in its own thread though.

I read Personant and island today, and I've heard about a lot of Naoshi's other one shots. They're great. He's very good at one shots. Each one seems as good as Double Arts before and after it was bad. (in other words, about half of volume 2) island especially was very inspirational, though Personant was too, it just felt a bit more rushed then island, which only felt rushed at the last 2 pages. I'd LOVE to see Apple, Williams, and any other Naoshi one shots scanlated. More and more I wonder what Shueisha was thinking when they cancelled Double Arts, since Naoshi seems so good. They seemed to have such high hopes for it at the 40th anniversary, and then... Hopefully one of these one shots will get Naoshi back in the magazine.

I've already mentioned Williams to the translator I'm working with for Apple, we'll see if he has time to take it on.:) I scanned Apple last night, but my scanner kind of... forgot how to scan grayscale properly in the last handful of pages (seems to be an ongoing problem:notrust), so I need to re-balance them before I post them for public consumption.

One thing I like about Komi-sensei's one-shot stories is that no matter how over the top they get, there's a gentleness at the heart of them... and I really don't think Jump's editors know what to do with that.

I've already passed a scan of Apple to the translator I usually work with on DA stuff, but the more translations the merrier I always say~

I've uploaded an LQ/MQ scan (http://mangahelpers.com/downloads/details/6881) but I couldn't get some of the white on black text to scan properly (darn cheap Weekly Jump newsprint) so I've transcribed the problematic panels here:

He has to. From all these incredible one shots Jump would be stupid not to serialize him again.

I didn't like DA, but I have to give it to him, it was original.

I also love his art. The Apple oneshot looked cool (from the raw).

Well, after reading the translation ...I take back what I said about its series potential, this one could definitely go to series with a few changes. Satoshi kind of reminds me a bit of Muddy though.:XD Muddy and... Captain Planet.:rofl

But I also feel that even though Komi-sensei's art is awesome, his stories have been kind of... immature (then again he's working within the Jump framework). They remind me of '50s pulp SF. I would love to see him work with a more experienced writer to reach his full potential.

I enjoyed all of Komi Naoshi's works, especially the new oneshot Apple. I can just see his artwork improving more and more. All of the stories are uniquely out there to me. :D And if Apple was changed into a series, that would be beyond awesome.

I actually gotta disagree with you (respectfully) on his stories seeming immature. Each one of his stories that I've read (well, been able to read haha) I've looked at as a breathe of fresh air. Double Arts was a great change from everything else in JUMP that's so fight driven, I felt it was much more character/story driven. Perhaps that's why it failed haha. Each of the stories is an interesting unique 'world'...I almost don't want him to be serialized, just so he'll keep pumping out these fun shorts haha. (for him though, of course I want him to get serialized so he can actually make a living)

I find them absolutely refreshing and unique. Komi-sensei seems to take the basic structure, polish them very well and then deepen it with his own personal touches. He even tacks on certain personality traits that are adorably absurd such as Sui compulsive liking for cherries. Who would've though that!?

Anyway, I'm looking forward to what this man might produce next.

I got around to reading Williams, and I must say I thoroughly enjoyed it. Such an original story (especially for shounen, I mean there wasn't a single fight). I especially love all of the awesome facial expressions throughout the story. It was a great light-hearted adventure story.

I really don't know what it is, but Komi is a great story teller. I hope he gets serialized again soon, or at the very least, I hope we get another one-shot soon. I know, I know, he has had two published very recently, but what can I say, I'm greedy :p.

I agree that Komi-sensei's works are a breath of fresh air... for Jump. But I sometimes feel let down by the resolutions of his one-shots - the happy endings feel a bit contrived. It's not that I want him to write tragic endings, but after the awesome set-up of Island and Williams I found it unnecessary that the land coincidentially rose and Aladoph sent a messenger just-just-just in time to restore Aira's and William's faith in dreams. As charming as they were, I felt a bit cheated that Aira and William were practically handed their happy endings on silver trays by KamiKomi-sama. It's the same reason I didn't think Death Note was all that.:XD But, I'll allow that it's maybe a limitation of the genre he's primarily working in atm, or because of his own relative youth. I thought that Koi no Kami-sama and Personant were very good. The jury's still kinda out on Apple... I like the art but the story's pretty shallow.

I have noticed a change in his heroes though - from the gregarious YAY!ADVENTURE!SEE THE WORLD!-type characters to "I just want to be left alone" types (Damore and Satoshi).

His work feels very slice of life. It's very gender neutral too, it doesn't rely on gimmicks such as brainless fight scenes, fanservice, moeblobs or slashable bishounens. I think I might be over praising him, but when I was reading Island it gave me the same feeling as watching something by Miyazaki. The characters' strugle and developement is his strong point. He also seem to critise people or society in disgaise. The mangas is just extremely well excuted and doesn't feel commercial. The art is really pretty too. Which is always a big plus for me.

His oneshots would work really well as a short movie.

Hearing nothing for half a year sounds like he's planning something long...just a gut feeling. He's too talented for SJ to lose. I can't really see his current style being popular, considering most readers of jump likes 'cool' stuff. These one shots are not 'cool', but heartwarming.

January 21, 2011, 01:05 PM
as with his other Oneshots, which I all liked without exception, I can hardly imagine Nisekoi being serialized. as Galactic Tomahawk wrote, it started off rather weak and that would be likely the case for a series too, slowly building on the story how they went on dates etc. The other scenario would be building on this as a starting chapter and building on their relationship later on even though the story seems more or less closed as it was.
in any case it was imo a nice variation of a romeo&julia theme with the rivalling clans - just that they hated each other xD

Like others said, it had its weak points but it was exactly what I'd expect from Naoshi. It's just his style. I very much enjoyed it and even got sucked in to the emotion when it the girl's (her name escapes me) face as she started crying. And twas very funny too.

I didn't think Nisekoi was anything special. It was actually kind of boring in the beginning. I thought the "twist" was kind of nice and things picked up from there, but then the ending sucked in my opinion. It should have had full closure instead of leaving it open for a series. He would redo the first chapter anyway if it got serialized so it wouldn't matter if they were different. I don't think it would make a good series. I think if it did get serialized, it would do no better than SWOT. That being said, it was enjoyable enough for a one-shot. Not Komi's best work though.

January 22, 2011, 08:26 AM
It was pretty funny and I enjoyed it. Like Akainu said, I can't really see this getting serialised - there's not much of a plot per se. Plus, it's kinda not very shounen-y imo. But I guess shounen romances can work too (Kimi no Iru Machi), but I don't know if it's Jump's style. If it isn't, and it doesn't do well on the TOCs, it'd just get canceled anyway :/

Also, I got some Hana Yori Dango vibes from it - especially the part where Raku got a cold from staying in the cold at the clock tower waiting for Ichijou.

January 22, 2011, 01:40 PM
Well pretty much everything from Naoshi hasn't been a manga you'd expect to see in Jump. He's an odd duck. But in regards to it being said that he should have given full closure, that almost never happens in oneshots. Artists may wrap up a single adventure but they want there to be room for them to do a series and leave the audience wanting more.

It's possible that he's contract bound and just can't switch. Or his mentor is of WSJ and thus it would be quite dishonoring to leave there. Those kind of pressure wouldn't surprise me in a Japanese company (where people still pass on their rightful vacation days just to not burden their co-workers).

Or he simply adores WSJ so much as the ultimate shounen magazine, that any other would be a serious status downgrade.

Looking at the lack of works since 2008, he can't really do this full time (anymore). He's a Art College graduate, so probably working in that field. Maybe as the assistant of a WSJ mangaka? Didn't pay attention to him since he vanished, so dunno.

I haven't read the 2011 oneshot yet but heard that it's less his unique style and more going towards a series you'd expect in WSJ, so who knows what we'll see of him this year. Maybe he finally gave in and adapts to the mass >.>

I'd rather not. What Jump needs is a line that is out of the ordinary, breaking the mold. I think Jump should start widening its perspectives a little bit more. It's time they reached out to other demographics. A better way to do that is holding the polls/questionairres internationally through the internet. That way, more manga will have bigger chances. And moreover, if they want to create another international hit like Naruto, they should definitely do so. Too bad Jump's filled with blind idiots. <__<

I'm glad that Komi has returned but I'm not sure he brought right genre in right time. Jump already have two romance series (well, one of them is mix of action), so I'm not sure Jump needs a third one. I wonder if this means Kagami is keep doing bad or the editors try to do a another Hoopmen plan.

Basically Hoop Men was a basketball manga that debuted some time after Kuroko No Basket debuted, being a little redundant since Jump already had another basketball manga, splitting the votes between the two since they were both the same genre. Nisekoi and Kagami seem to be similar since Nisekoi is debuting some time after Kagami and they're both of similar genre, though the latter will probably have more fanservice.

Well I meant it in a way that there were too many variables in Jump for it to be a planned moved, because what if Hoop Men became popular and overtook Kuroko's audience? That means Kuroko would have to go instead, or something along those lines. I can imagine Nisekoi being a little more different than Kagami in having more comedy elements than Kagami, then again I don't know too much about Kagami since I stopped reading after 2 or so chapters. Though, I don't see why both of them can't survive.

ah, thanks for the context.

well re the Hoop Men vs Kuroko thing... I think Jump just likes to experiment. Perhaps they were trying to go after the female readers with a stereotypical romance and sports manga, but failed because the female audience is not reading Jump for THAT kind of romanceXDXD.

Anyway, I just read the update that Enigma ended, so that's definitely the place that Nisekoi will be occupying. Still, Kagami recently resolved a crucial plot thread, and seems to be heading towards a finale if the most recent chapter is any indication.

I'm just hoping that Komi-sensei won't up the ecchi in Nisekoi to fit in with Jump's romance series patterns-_-;
