View Full Version : Discussion Breaking the fourth wall

One of my absolute favorite scenes in (comedy) manga is when the characters are acting like what they actually are: fictional characters.

'To 4th wall' literally means the open site of the theater stage. While the back as well as the right and left are real walls, the one that is between the actors and the audience is only imaginary. The played characters can't go through this wall and stay closed up in their fictional reality.

Normally this is taken as a matter of fact but sometimes the stage actors will let their characters interact with the audience. This is called 'breaking the 4th wall' and can be adapted to any other media.

In manga, common 'wall breaks' are when the characters complain to the author about the story development or make comments which show that they realize being within a fictional story. Some mangaka are well known for doing this very often within their stories such as Bastard!!'s Hagiwara Kazushi or Cross Game's Adachi Mitsuru. A few artists even place themselves (hidden) into or outside of the panels.

Attention, some pictures can contain spoiler and not all or funny when you're not actually reading it. I just collected those for a media pedagogic project a while back but I would still love to see more.

(note: remember to read manhwa from left-to-right)

I know sooo many more but I'm too lazy to go back through my earlier read manga. Please feel free to post a fitting page/panel when you come across one :)

I love the 4th wall breakage too. And as an avid Gintama fan, there are too many instances to pick from! But yeah I love it when Manga (and other media) do that.

Thanks for collecting them. If I try to think of such scenes in mangas, I can't find anything (except Sayonara Zetzubou Sensei, but even so I don't have a particular scene in mind) so that's not an easy task.
I don't know the manga, but the anime Hayate no Gotoku uses it a lot.

Usually I laugh at these scenes, but I can't help thinking it is an easy way to make people laugh.

PS: I did not understand for Shugo Chara -_-;

Gara breaks the 4th wall a lot, like every other chapter he's in. It's hilarious.

Also Chapter 226 Mahou Sensei Negima. She literally asks whether they could show this.

Also this one case in Air Gear was funny.

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure (http://www.onemanga.com/Jojo%27s_Bizarre_Adventure/153/16/), of all manga, actually had that one instance. (There's at least one other where somebody says "this isn't a comic book or anything", but that's not quite the same thing.) It's really quite glaring, since you've got the fourth wall being broken in a serious action manga. I dunno what Araki was thinking. I mean, in Dragon Ball (http://www.onemanga.com/Dragon_Ball/19/03/) and Kinnikuman (http://www.onemanga.com/Kinnikuman/1/11/) it made sense, since they were gag series' at the time. They both became serious action series' later. But JoJo was always serious, and yet there's that one bit of fourth wall breaking...

It's most oftenly appear when one of the character is doing a "tsukkomi" in a manga... and since gag is full of them, you'd see them the most in gags :p

One of the most common (and old) phrase would be the characters in the manga telling the audiences "good kids should not try this at home!" :D:D

Hayate no Gotoku is actually spammed with this that it gets annoying most of the time. That's also probably the reason why these things don't make me laugh anymore. (Too lazy to list some, so bah.)

How can you break something thats not there?

Hayate has never had one of these wall things.

What about a parody of this sentence as in Maria Holic?
http://www.onemanga.com/MariaHolic/9/03/

Also, I found another gag breaking the wall in Houshin Engi
http://www.onemanga.com/Houshin_Engi/1/17/
It reminds me of this parody of LotR on Youtube

I laugh at these too, but I also like to see them used sparingly rather than too much..

Initial D has some minor examples of it within the first 100 chapters but dies off afterwards.

*sneak in out of curiosity*

...something like this (http://media2.onemanga.com/mangas/00000619/000065222/36.jpg)? I mean, I still didn't quite get what the "4th wall" thing actually means... ._."

your example suggests that you understand what the forth wall is :amuse
btw, that's Blazer Drive right?

I remember many..(alright, a few) times in Berserk when Guts tells Puck to get lost, and Puck responds that the manga will be too gloomy without him around..
but digging that one out from my Berserk archive will probably take too long, as I don't remember where exactly it was :p

lol 2 minutes? I hadn't searched for an online manga reader that hosted Berserk, and since my Berserk archive is on an optical disc in a cd wallet on a shelf in...... you get the picture :D

and I haven't read berserk for 5 years.. (I'm on a looong hiatus :p) so my memory wasn't clear as to where this exactly happened..

anyway enough rambling.. and here's a Houshin Engi example:
