Catched up with Ikigami! :nuts Great manga! I highly recommend it to anyone and you should all at least check it out and give it a try :amuse
I decided to check out Abara because it looked completely different and unusual to the majority of other manga's out there. I thought it was an ok manga. Nihei has a very gruesome-like form of drawing lol but I thought it was cool.
Currently still reading Black God, Monster, Air Gear, Eyeshield 21 & I have resumed reading 07 Ghost :amuse. Oh yeah.. I started Psyren! I'm enjoying it so far. :tem

I read the End (http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=624) and was not overly impressed. The writing was just okay, the characters weren't overly interesting, the ending felt rushed. After a short break I've resumed reading Natsume, which is a definite classic. Very serene, slow paced, and deep.

Just finished Nodame Cantabile. Great, great series even though the end was a bit of a disappointment. Thank goodness for the sequel (http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=51284)! (Read the first chapter of that, too. ^^) I wasn't ready to let go of these characters yet, so I'm looking forward to keeping up with this one as it's released. Gyabo~! :XD
I'm still in the mood for a little more Josei, so next up is Spicy Pink (http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=8042). But as it's only 2 volumes, I'm sure I'll be finished with that one in a flash. :noworry So, after that I think I'm going to change gears and *finally* get around to reading Nurarihyon no Mago. Been putting this one off for too long. :darn

Resumed reading Girls Bravo. Mainly so I can get this shameless harem out of the way and into my completion list.

I caught up with Natsume Yuujinchou. (http://mangahelpers.com/m/natsume-yuujin-chou) Wow. A truly brilliant series. For anyone who wants something with more emotional depth than the average manga, this is a good one to read. Reminds me of Mushishi or manga by Igarashi Daisuke. A must read series.

It's definitely not the greatest manga ever made but it's a fun and easy read I find.
Finished reading Line (http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=4845), it was "meh".
Read the first two volume of Drifting Classroom (http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=6087), I wish someone would continue to scanlate it... ;_____;

I always avoided Line because it's by the mangaka of Anne Freaks - worst manga I've ever read.
Shame that even the tanks of Drifiting Classroom are hard to find now. Classic series.

I finished Sabuka no Tami (http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=41320) a one volume manga by the great Miyazaki Hayao. A hidden gem from 1969, Sabuka is the story of a central Asian peoples fight for freedom from an oppressive nomadic tribe. Originally serialized in a newspaper targeting children it is a surprisingly complex, tragic story about repression, war and the confusion and anger they breed. Absolutely classic, thanks to Hox for unearthing it!

Started and caught up with the latest chapter of Burning Hell (http://www.onemanga.com/Burning_Hell/). Four chapters (well, what I found) so far, but I have enjoyed it. The description given doesn’t give it justice. However the series is a bit mature, so I guess one needs to be over a certain age. Blah, blah, blah.

I just read the Yellow Book (http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=671). A collection of four stories, Yellow Book's four short stories cover themes of literature, family, and love. Not a manga that will blow minds but a subtle, well written, and memorable.
I also read the first story from FURUYA Usamaru's mind f**k Garden (lhttp://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=51408), titled Garden of Illusion: the Origin of Nudity. Expect a mix of philosophy, surrealism, and nudity. Not something for everyone but I liked it. I'll read his series Happiness (http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=14591) next. More of a conventional manga but very interesting looking. His debut, Palepoli (http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=6173) is one of the most original manga I've ever read. Shonen fans who know Furuya sensei from Genkaku Picasso would be shocked to read his more "typical" work.

I enjoyed it even though its only got 4 chapters out now. So its still kinda hard to tell if it will stay good. The art is really retro 80s style. But it fits it well.
Also, finally read the first chapter of Garden and that was like a major drug trip. But I loved it! Can't wait for more to be scanlated.

While your waiting for more Garden try Palepoli (http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=6173). Same mangaka, just as trippy. It's a strange format, you might need a few pages to get used to it. Definitely not an easy read; lots of obscure references, optical illusions, and potentially offensive material. If you could handle Garden you should be fine with Palepoli.
Because it is such a long series I'm probably going to wait a bit on Souten Kouro. At some point I really want to read it though.

Stardust Wink is again another adorable shoujo manga by Haruta Nana. Her mangas always have a very typical plot yet they are a joy to read (most importantly, it's not wangsty). As the characters are weird/quirky, the interaction between the characters are always interesting. Her art also improved, I'm glad she doesn't over use screentones. Arina Tanemura I'm looking at you.
But I honestly don't think she'll have a giant hit. She pretty much replaced Yoshizumi Wataru's place (the cute romance stories), since Yoshizumi draws josei nowadays.

I recently tried out the manga Hoshi no Samidare (http://mangahelpers.com/m/hoshi-no-samidare/). It's pretty interesting.
Here's the summary because I'm lazy, I'm copy/pasting:
The world is in mortal peril. Sir Noi Crezant, the Lizard Knight, has been sent to gain the aid of the great warrior Amamiya Yuuhi in hopes of finding the Princess Samidare and protecting the planet from the incredible 'Biscuit Hammer' poised to crack the Earth in two. Unfortunately Yuuhi wants no part of it, and the Princess doesn't prove to be the shining 'hero of justice' role model that Noi had hoped for.
The main character is more of an anti-hero since he doesn't want to save the world (and some other stuff, but I don't want to spoil it for anyone). The mangaka isn't the type to keep everyone alive so expect some touching deaths~ There are moments of comedy, but this manga isn't dark or anything.
You guys should check it out if you want a somewhat adventure-type manga with some powers mixed in. The good thing about this manga is that the scanlator is fast and so you can expect quick releases, although they're catching up to where the manga is at and then you'll have to wait for monthly releases. >.> Anyway, give it a shot~

Shugo Chara season 1 is completed. Looks like encore would be a bunch of short stories of other characters with Shugo Chara Encore!...
Oh my god...ITS UTAU AND KUKAI....>//////////<. Did not expect that at all. Peach Pit did drop a hint or two for KukaiXUtau, but I thought it's just the same as AmuXKukai or AmuXKairi moments (the DS game had a route to Kukai despite you play as Amu). I was hoping to see more KukaiXUtau...
I squealed like a fangirl (wait...I am a fangirl) when Kukai kissed Utau...that was one big surprise. Utau in full blown deredere mode is too cute for words. Need to see this animated, I will kill Satelite if they don't animate this episode. I NEED TO HEAR MY DEREDERE UTAU/NANA-CHAN <3

I finished catching up to Kuroko no Basket, I never realized how many color pages and extra pages it received for it's 1st year. You can tell Jump didn't want that series to die and I'm glad because not only is it a good sports manga, it's funny too. Next I will try some Sket Dance and then Reborn. But I always get sidetracked. >.<
LilaChan
March 11, 2010, 04:48 PM
Kuroko no Basket isn't half bad at all. For someone who doesn't like basketball at all, like me, found it enjoyable. There are so much potential, since sports manga needs time to soak into reader's mind.
Talking about sports manga. I'm about chapter 300 with Prince of Tennis. Now, what can I say about it? I've read the first 30 chapters like 3 months ago, found it quite bland. Watched a couple of 'over the top' clips from youtube and decided to give it another chance. In the end I do find it REALLY enjoyable and entertaining, it's not popular for nothing. I don't know how to explain it. Once you read more, you'll really love the characters and want to root for them.
I wouldn't say it's good in an artistic way, it's not a deep manga. I found the start to be bland because it played too straight as a sports manga. Eventually, it become some weird sports manga with flashy moves and narm moments, then it becomes much more entertaining. I'm really surprised that Konomi managed to keep the entertainment value up, or should I say it gets more entertaining the more you read it.
The manga itself wasn't as fangirl-orientated as I thought it would be. It's pretty neutral (other then the blue bishounen ghetto you generally get with any shounen manga that is not a harem manga). The art style isn't my favourite, but Konomi really knows how to the posture for tennis. I found the manga very easy to read, despite how sucky I am with sports. It's a good sports manga for people who might not like sports.
The anime, the musical and every other thing related are fangirl orientated. The anime made it even more over the top, purposely making 'It's so bad it's good' moments. The musical was just a bunch of 'ikemens' attempting to sing and dance with a tennis racket. The character singles just trying to rip fangirls off even more.
I always wondered why PoT is so popular, I finally understood. /is shot

I thought this about One Piece. The "Why is this popular?". Though that was probably because of the art and the 4 kids version of One Piece anime.

The manga itself wasn't as fangirl-orientated as I thought it would be. It's pretty neutral (other then the blue bishounen ghetto you generally get with any shounen manga that is not a harem manga). I'm reading Sket Dance now and I'm loving this slice of life school comedy. I've only read a few chapters but now I know why it won Shogakukan shonen award this year. The plot remains simple but the the characters with their vibrate personality makes this manga shine. I've looked at some of the volume covers and #08 (http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/61rkNbOqCwL._SS500_.jpg) is the best. With a 2nd drama CD out in April it just has to get an anime soon.

I caught back up to KimiTodo. Chapter 39 was one of the all time great chapters. I'm glad Goody nagged me to start reading again >.>
I read Fetish (http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=17817), a really intense, disturbing josei manga. Then I read Water. (http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=5952), two brief chapters of shojo ai by the mangaka of Pumpkin and Mayonnaise, which I am now reading. Also read to one shots about personified inanimate objects: I am a Piano (http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=40874) and the Female Fridge Number 1 (http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=6975). The first was a touching goth-lolita story about a piano, personified as a young girl, remembering the various people who played her. In just eight pages the author conveyed how the way we treat our possessions can come to be reflected in the object itself, how a truly loved object can return our emotions. Female Fridge was just weird, I didn't think that highly of it.

Oh no! Now I'm a nag? Sorry! I really didn't mean to be, but Kimitodo had been so good I couldn't help myself. :sweat I only had your best interest in mind, really. <33 Everyone should catch up on this series! The latest chapters have been amazing!
I've actually been reading a few things recently. I read a couple of volumes of Blame!, which I was enjoying. But then I realized what I was really in the mood to read was shoujo (blame the awesomeness of Kimitodo ch. 39 for this :XD). So, I put Blame! on hold temporarily and read a few other things, including Strobe Edge (http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=13341) and Bokura wa Itsumo (http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=15614). Next, I may go back to Blame! or I may start another shoujo/josei. Not sure yet... buuut I don't think my shoujo craving has been quite satiated. :p

I've been interested in more Shonen Sunday series so I decided to read Defense Devil (http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=42191). I'm almost finished vol. 1 and the art reminds me of Death Note based on it's first color pages (http://www.mangatoshokan.com/read/Defense-Devil/Tenkai/1/5). A demon lawyer that's lost his powers and now is helping the victims that have died by declaring them innocent. It's funny and sidekick is cute. Volume 4 goes on sale Thursday and I hope people will buy it so there will be no cancellation.

Some updates: I read Fetish (http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=17817) and Pumpkin and Mayonnaise (http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=5112). Both are josei, both extraordinary. Fetish is five short stories about obsession and displacement. Pumpkin and Mayonnaise reminds me of Inio, a complicated story about accepting adulthood.
I've been in a Nihei mood, I'm rereading Blame then Noise. After that I need a lighter, happier read so I'll resume reading Akagami no Shrayukihime (http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=16482), what I had started before my Nihei marathon began.

Its by the mangaka of Parasyte and Historie. Its got mystery mixed with supernatural elements. Finished rereading Blame. A masterpiece, one of the great manga ever - anyone who has not read it should. All of Nihei's series are addictive; the art, the characters, the ambiguity; his manga are complete worlds. It's been a couple of years since I last read Blame, Biomega, and Abara. All were just as rewarding the second time. Add Noise (http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=2275) to that list. I skipped it when I first started reading Nihei but made up for it now. Six chapters plus a short one shot and the pilot of Blame, Noise is essential. Don't make my mistake and skip it. Save it for after Blame. I also read Blame 2, a good if inessential one shot. I've fallen a few chapters behind on Knights of Sidonia. It's not as good as his older series but still better than most manga. Before I start something new I think I'll catch up.

I recently read ga-rei, but stopped not long after the kyuubi arc
now I need help from someone who knows the whole story
this may be slightly off topic, but this the last place I have left (ga-rei thread is dead) depending on the response I might keep reading it-please help!
I read until about 2 chapters after the kyuubi arc, but I got pissed off when kagura woke up and she had lost her memory- I really hate it when a character loses their memory right when they finally realize their love. I was really hoping that she woud regain her memory and love kensuke again so I did what you are not supposed to do and I googled to see and, well, ended up on wikipedia. I know that wikipedia ruins mangas but if kagura doesnt end up with kensuke I really see no point in continuing because I am very touchy on how a manga ends. if I dont like the ending I can end up depressed and lost in thoughts for up to a few days. anyways I couldnt tell what really happend from what was written on there but it seems as tho the story may of have of taken a yuri turn and I'm not shure about kensuke's fate. if kagura and kensuke end up together I'l keep reading and if not I wont. so please tell me if they do and if not what happens. I really hope I wont have to make up my own ending and cut it short after kyuubi arc
on an other note I just finished reading mastermation master kurosawa- I was suprised by how good it was and it had a good ending. the name might not make you want to read it but check it out anyways, you might end up liking it if you keep reading pass the gross parts

I finished Japan as Viewed By 17 Creators, available here. (http://anethumgraveole.wordpress.com/) Split between Japanese and French artists the former write comics capturing the spirit of where in Japan they were born, the latter spent two weeks in a single location, describing what they saw from a foreign perspective. An excellent introduction to the Franco/Japanese la nouvelle manga (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/La_nouvelle_manga) movement "Japan" features such brilliant artists as Daisuke Igrashi, Taiyo Matsumoto, Jiro Taniguchi, Kan Takahama, Frederic Boilet, Nicolas de Crecy, and Joann Sfar.
I also read the first translated chapter of the manhwa Pink Lady (http://mangahelpers.com/forum/showthread.php?t=59688). Next, I'm planning on reading Kinderbook (http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=3544).
Anyone interested in alternative manga should check anethum graveole, the site I linked to above. He's scanlated quite a few notable series over the last few weeks in addition to "Japan". I need to explore the other series he's done soon. He's doing some good work, making these titles available is a huge service to the online manga community.

No wowzers No (I did read chapter 2 =.=)
The last series I read with an ecchi genre was Ane Doki. Another series I put on hold is Dr. Rurru since a chapter is missing in the scans. In order to fill this gap I've decided to pick up Kimi no Iru Machi. Same group that did Ane Doki, Red Hawks provides great scans. I found this series by looking at the cover of volume 9 (http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/aa197/esker08/volumes/Kimi_no_Iru_Machi_9.jpg). It caught my eye for some reason.

As for what I've been reading, I took a short break from Cross Game to read a few 1-volume series that I've been wanting to try: Japan as Viewed by 17 Creators (http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=7937), Yukiko's Spinach (http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=33706), Rakuen (http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=5957), and Fetish (http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=17817). I'm currently finishing up Ciguatera (http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=2017). So far, I'm liking it. It's a nice Seinen slice of life. Plenty of humor with some dark elements thrown in there, too. Aaaaand since I'm still in a Seinen mood, I think I'm going to check out either Ultra Heaven (http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=8051) or Saturn Apartments (http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=11060) next.

This is a great manga. Mephisto Bart Kucabara is a devil lawyer. In order to return to the demon world that he was exiled from he needs to collect enough Dark Matter. To do so he creates a plan to claim the Dark Matter from the souls of sinners sentenced to hell. Prove the soul's innocence and the Dark Matter becomes his.
Yea, I just started reading and finished catching up to this. It really is awesome. I like how the plot progresses too and changes as it moves on. I like where the series is going and I have high hopes for what they do next.

no worries, its beginning can't be as bad as Nurarihyon no Mago's or Negima's (worst I've read) and they're currently some of the best shounen around. Besides a lot of people have told me that the beginning is meh but it has awesome pacing and gets great
Psyren sure has great pacing, and you'll get completely drawn in after a short while. Mysteries and questions get answered rather quickly too so you gain interest when learning things here and there. Literally all the side characters rock and hold importance so that's great too.
Mago and Negima are also titles I've yet to read, sigh.
Any body reading this who hasn't read 20th Century Boys yet? If you have not, do so. It's a classic, should be considered a standard. Every manga fan should at least try it.
I'm considering starting on 20th Century Boys, but I'm a little torn about which manga to prioritize. I really don't have the patience to read several "longer" manga anymore, so I have to read one at a time, take a long break and then maybe read another. Should 20th Century Boys be put at the top of the "to read" list?

as for Urasawa he is beyond doubt the best mangaka of this time but Pluto had Osamu Tezuka along as well.
Any way another recommendation that is if you havent read it yet try Nausicaa by Miazaki. This one has a level of its own like 20 th and 21 th century boys

I know what I'm behind and how much since I'm an organized (http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/aa197/esker08/Misc/organized_manga.png) person. I'm just to lazy to read all of them at the same time, it's too much to take on at once. One I forgot to mention on my list I should read soon is Vinland Saga. I already have it downloaded in case I lose internet connection xD I'm looking forward to reading it since it's the same author who wrote Planates. There's another one I need to finish. >.<
I'll finish FMA sometime after it ends soon, I enjoy manga that's already completed. ^_^

Absolutely! I'm reading this right now (about 5-6 volumes in) and it's fantastic so far. I can already tell that Urasawa knows how to optimize the mystery and suspense in a series. It just keeps getting better and better the more I read~
Aaaaand.... if you start now, we can read it together! :amuse

Right now Kimi ni Todoke http://www.anikaos.com/0024-angelstar_kaos/angelstar-kaos007.gif Truly one of the best manga I've read XD It's definitely going in my top 5-10 http://www.anikaos.com/0034-purple-kao-ani/purple-hikagoutte.gif I'm also following Dengeki Daisy and Piano no Mori closely even though it takes some time http://www.anikaos.com/0024-angelstar_kaos/angelstar-kaos020.gif And of course series like One Piece, FMA, Fairy Tail, Hajime no ippo, Bakuman, Naruto, Bleach, Hunter X Hunter are a given XD
Well, for other series here are my lists click (http://www.mangaupdates.com/members.html?id=161038c), although it's not entirely true XD I read some manga, then I take a break for while and I read another manga and return back to the first after some time XD There are those I'm following closely, like chapter by chapter, even though it takes 3-4 months for 1-2 chapters http://www.anikaos.com/0034-purple-kao-ani/purple-hikaouin.gif For others like Skip Beat! and Reborn! I'm waiting for 40-50 chapters so I can read them all at once http://www.anikaos.com/0024-angelstar_kaos/angelstar-kaos021.gif

I finished Cross Game (http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=660) today. Wonderful series, without a doubt one of the best I've ever read. The writing was amazing, very subtle. The art is like One Piece: better than it seems. Don't worry what type of manga you normally like, Cross Game is so good that you'll like it anyway. I definitely plan on reading more Adachi soon.
As promised I caught back up with Psyren, so far as MS has scanlated anyway. Still one of the better current Jump series. Now, I'm rereading something for a change, King of Thorn (http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=467). I'm looking forward to the movie enough that I want to read it again.

I currently started Sket Dance. It's too bad that recent chapters aren't getting released as frequently as other JUMP titles. The comedic aspects are hilarious and the serious episodes are touching. I'm really enjoying it!
I'm also planning to read Tegami Bachi. I often see it on TV commercials and at the local Japanese bookstore. I think I'll give it a try when I'm less busy.

Tegami Bachi is really nice, too bad the releases are slow. But they started issuing it in English here, so I might be able to buy it after I finish collecting other things ><
As for Sket Dance it really is fun XD Ups, almost forgot to put a spoiler tag XD It's about Bakuman My first thought when I saw "The Perfect Crime Club" was "Huh.. This looks a lot like Sket Dance, just with the plot reversed" XD
Cross Game looks interesting, I might look it up :3

I'm pretty far behind on Sket Dance, I haven't been reading since Trinity Bakuma picked it up. I really need to get back into it, definitely one of the best series in Jump. Mature and intelligent enough, along with the funny, that it seems to come from a different magazine. I'll definitely work on catching up soon.

Now that you mentioned it, I noticed it too! On a semi-related note, I love how Sket Dance gives shout outs to its fellow JUMP series.

I agree. There were times when I teared up and there were other moments where I burst out laughing. XD The series really does move you emotionally.
What draws me into Tegami Bachi is the fantastical, ethereal-like artwork. Of course I haven't read it yet (will soon!) so after my schoolwork is over, I can't wait to pick it up.

I re-read King of Thorns (http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=467). A very good but not quite great action series. If that's anyone's genre of choice I would recommend it. A movie came out in Japan last April, when the subs come out I'll watch it.
The last chapters of Freesia are out. That is one of the great series, one of the most twisted and intelligent out there. The material can get quite offensive, get over it and read it anyway. Kano is one of the most brilliant leads ever, he has to be experienced first hand. Freesia is basically about institutionalized violence (war, law enforcement, death penalty, etc) and explores the moral dead zone inhabited when society accepts violence on some level but not others.
Next I'll read Junkie Fiction and then Wandering Son (http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=4802). The latter series is supposedly brilliant.

Demographics are not a big deal, they don't say much about the manga but...... Bitter Virgin is not shojo, it is actually seinen. It ran in Young Gangan, a magazine marketed at adult men. Seinen, shojo, shonen, josei are demographic/marketing terms; nothing more, nothing less. They do not indicate genre, content, art style, etc. Not all magazines even market themselves by age anymore. With magazine sales slumping some anthologies are being marketed at specific niches, even if they keep the old demographic tags. Shonen Ace for example still calls itself shonen but they started marketing to Otaku of all ages in a successful move to expand circulation.

thanks for long, detailed info on demographics. i realised that when i noticed that bitter virgin and gantz r both sheinen, but completely different. the one is this soppy love story thing, and the other is this gory lewd action (but it does some romance, but not too much)
anyway, i read a bit of no bra and it was boring and badly drawn so i stopped and dont know what to read. any suggestions?

I’m currently reading Akuma de Sourou, a shojo manga based on school life written by Mitsuba Takanashi. I began reading this manga out of pure curiosity, since I wanted to find out how faithful of an adaptation was “Devil Beside You” (a Taiwanese drama based on that manga). I didn’t have any great expectations to be honest, but to my surprise, the more I read this manga the more I find myself truly enjoying it. I like the art, the story, the characters; it might even become one of my favorite shojo series. Yes, it has some of the typical shojo elements but other elements of Akuma are quite original and interesting. I didn’t have great expectations when I started reading it but now I do, and I do hope ADS doesn’t disappoint me once I finish reading it.

Homunculus is brilliant, one of my all time favorites. It's about a man who lives in his car, parked between a posh hotel and a park. A strange man asks him if he wants to take part in an experiment in trepanation, the drilling of a whole in the skull, in order to unlock the full potential of the brain. Agreeing, his sixth sense is seemingly awakened, as he can vividly see the true nature of people. It's by the mangaka of Ichi the Killer. Definitely worth reading, just be prepared that only one or two volumes come out a year. Since they are scanlated in book form a year may go by without more to read. Well worth it though.

Thanks to Jin (Buggy Fly) I started reading Ikigami. Its a great manga and its actually a nice read because everything is broken up into 3 chapters which they call episodes. All are individual stories and an overall story line developing as the manga goes on. Its an easy read because I can go one episode at a time and gradually get caught up while I'm in the middle of reading a crap load of other things and I recommend it :thumbs.
