Hey everyone, this is the METAL THREAD!!! :headbang. The place to discuss anything and everything about the wide world of Metal music. Here you could discuss anything from your favorite classic metal band to your favorite death metal band. You can discuss specific genres/types of Metal; which you like, which you don't. ALL OF IT IS WELCOMED HERE.

Another personal matter of mine is that I am always trying to look for new bands out there so this is a great place to recommend some bands that people may like. Maybe if you just discovered a new metal band that you want to spread the word about you could bring them up here. I would greatly appreciate learning of new bands I could possibly get into and I am sure many other members would love that too.

Anywho I hope this thread is a success, I am a HUGE fan of Metal as a whole and am hoping to get in touch with other members who share the same love for Metal as I do through this thread ;). Have fun guys and stay METAL!!!

Thats cool! Thanks for being first, lol. I'm a fan of Metallica myself. I also like Sabbath but I prefer the Dio years much better than the ones with Ozzie. I love them right now under their new name with Dio as Heaven And Hell! Their new album is The Devil You Know and I really love the new single Bible Black. I even saw them in concert about a month ago and it was really sick.

Well I don't have to tell you when I could just show you :p. HEAVEN AND HELL - BIBLE BLACK LIVE (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h0fKy0MnuCU) I recorded them playing Bible Black at the concert I went to a month ago ;). It was really awesome but now instead of me just telling you how great it was now you can see/hear for yourself :thumbs

Haha, yea its mine. All those videos are ones I recorded from concerts I've gone to. I like BFMV too even though I don't listen to them as much lately cause I've been in a heavier mood. That concert I went to was sweet though, it was the Taste of Chaos tour and they were the opening band, followed by Atreyu, and then Avenged Sevenfold. I really LOVED A7X live, their stuff was really powerful! :wtf

O so are you a 5FDP fan too?!?!?!?!? They have a new album coming out soon, not too sure when and what its called but I do have a leaked single that supposed to be on the album though :XD. The Bleeding really is a great song though. Its one of those that are heavy and distinctly metal yet your able to get emotionally into it.

FINALLY! Had never created a thread like this before because I thought i'd be alone! ;_;

I'm into all kinds of metal, but I tend to prefer progressive stuff. Opeth is my alltime favourite band (progressive/death). Others I could point out are Blind Guardian, Ayreon, Ark, Dream Theater, Angra, Dark Tranquility, Porcupine Tree (not really metal though...), Theatre of Tragedy, old Nightwish, Sentenced (RIP ;_; ), The Gathering, and maaaaaany more <3

Of the "new stuff", I like Avenged Sevenfold ^^ And of course, all the classics, Maiden, Metallica, Megadeth and all.

YOU ARE NOT ALONE!!! :comfort. I felt compelled to make this thread because I knew there was some people out there.....plus us metal heads needed to counteract the Rap Thread! :shakefist.

Anywho I enjoy some progressive. Out of that I am more into Mastodon, I love their new album Crack The Skye! Its so good!!!! I'm hoping to go see them with Dethklok in about a month at the Hammerstein Ballroom in Manhattan. As for your list there are quite a few bands I don't know so I will be looking into some of them ;). See that is one of my main hopes for this, to spread information on some new bands I and other people could listen to because I am always looking for new bands. I find that this could be a good way to find some more :).

O and I LOVE NIGHTWISH :XD. I actually like the newer stuff a little better....is it that your not a fan of the new singer?

Yeah, Nightwish is a nice band. and yes they fucking pown Within Temptation :yelling

Besides that I've got an Evanescence LP, Fallen. Its actually not pure metal, more like Alternative Rock or Nu Metel but meh, furthermore I own a Marilyn Manson Best of which I rly love.. And Ive got all Rammstein and Metallica Lps :headbang

Lol, well at first Linkin Park WAS Rap Metal, but that kinda changed up as their music went on. And M! I WAS JOKING!!!....but I am right in saying why should all the rap fans have all the fun so I made a metal thread then ;).

I LOVE RAMMSTEIN!!!! I don't understand them of the most part even though the funny part is that I am learning some german from them. They have a new album in the works too, I CAN'T WAIT FOR THAT!!

Overall I also enjoy a lot of Industrial Metal like Rammstein. The other bands I really like are Korn and Static-X. Static-X is probably one of my favorite in this category. My favorite albums by them have got to be their first one "Wisconsin Death Trip" and then their newest one that came out back in April "Cult of Static".

Just noticed the thread in UR sig...nice stuff... I'm not actually in for rock, but I had years when I was actively listening Metallica, Nightwish, Dimu Borgir and some romanian and hungarian bands. I think it was the "fire of youth" as guy would say...I still love metallica though they have a special touch which cannot be copied...I still listen to rock from time to time since my bro loves it...nice thread anyway...
OFF-TOPIC:
I really don't have time to check other threads outside manga-related, and from the first of october even less time... so if U have any other interesting threads, if U pls share a few links, or something...anyway it's weird this is a only a onepaged thread...

True what youre saying about Linkin Park, but I actually enjoy only the old songs from the Hybrid Theory LP, like In The End or Papercut.. Also the colabo with Jay-Z was rly good stuff :wtf

As for Rammstein: I actually believe the words are quite easy to understand even for not-German speaking people. I remember when I was in Russia some years ago my Russian cousin sang Du Hast to me :lmao
And waddu you think, Im learning English by listening to English song myself  .. music connects ;)

Ooohw! Almost for got to mention the band Flyleaf.. I love a few songs of em but dont have a LP yet.. does anyone know that band and some of the albums?

I don't like her...too bad I never got to see a concert with NW + Tarja, I only went to one, with the new girl. I got to see Tarja solo though, she's amazing.

I liked their first 3 albuns. Then NW started to get too pretentious, less metal and more "movie soundtrack"-like. After that, Tarja left and things got even worse...now it's just like a random melodic metal band a la Epica or Within Temptation. :/

Hey, Epica's pretty damn good. It's closer to old Nightwish than the new stuff (for starters, it has an orchestral singer.) I also liked Within Temptation. I prefer metal with clean vocals.

I'm into more symphonic and power metal. I like Kamelot, Nightwish, Epica, Sirenia, and some Dimmu Borgir.

Kamelot is sweet they are probably my favorite Power Metal band. That was the basis for me to move on to Melodic Death Metal. Once I got into the whole screaming and growling thing I was immediately attached to Melodic Death Metal because it incorporates some of that epic feel you get from power metal that I've always loves. Stuff I like that is Melodic Death Metal is Mors Principium Est, Dethklok, etc. I just love metal bands in general that incorporate those orchestral influences into their music. :D

I don't know Epica but I did a quick google and they come up a Symponic Metal so they fit then :XD. As for In Flames I really like them, I got into them after playing their song "Take This Life" on Guitar Hero 3 as a bonus song. I really liked them so I went and got their discography. My only problem is that their old stuff is pretty bad in comparison to the newer. The album Reroute to Remain and the 3 other albums that came after that are their best stuff IMO. Everything else sounds like nails on a chalkboard to me, lol.

mhm, yes I did. I've tried listening to their old stuff and I just don't like it. Its too chaotic, I don't like the vocals. Their newer stuff has better vocals more organized and more melodic and I just find that I actually enjoy listening to it over Lunar Strain and Whoracle. I think their most recent album wasn't as heavy as their older stuff but I still enjoy listening to it a lot. I guess Soundtrack To Your Escape was like an in between album. It was very heavy and yet I enjoyed listening to the vocals. I didn't find Reroute To Remain as heavy as Soundtrack but it was a very technical album, I liked how they incorporated some techno/electronic influences into songs like Cloud Connected. I'm not saying you can't have your opinion but this is mine, lol. I just don't enjoy the older stuff.

I love metal! It's easily my favourite genre of music. Melodic Death metal would have to be my favourite sub-genre, it's just so....... melodic. The old In Flames (since their new stuff is pretty low quality in my opinion), Dark Tranquility and At the Gates are some of my favs. As for newer bands, I'd have to recommend Insomnium. Their songs have amazing riffs and great acoustic pieces to boot. Somehow I manage to find their songs to be quite peaceful. Try them!

If I mix AF, Epica, WT and all the girly-operatic stuff, I really can't tell which band it is...they all sound the same ;p They just drank from NW's original formula, but at least NW had personality. But I do love Floor Jansen's voice...

For me, good bands with girl vocals are Theatre of Tragedy, The Gathering, the old NW I talked about, Ayreon (mixed), Leaves Eyes..

Thanks :D. I'll try and look a few of those up and hopefully I'll end up liking them. Well thats the way it is for Melodic Death Metal. Its a very obscure genre when you think about it. Like its one of my favorite yet at the same time how many HUGE NAME Melodic Death Metal bands do you see? If anything I have like 2 WELL known ones like In Flames and Children of Bodom. Like those seem to be Melodic Death Metal bands that everyone knows. Others I really like that took me a lot of digging to find are Mors Principium Est, Devildriver, etc. I love Melodic Death Metal but I agree that a lot of the bands are underrated because they just aren't VERY well known...at least in America that is.

Out of those I love Amon Amarth! I just got into them a few months ago because of Runes To My Memory. Thats like my favorite song by them. Soilwork I've had one of their albums for a while but I don't listen to them often. But yea I know that you Europeans get all the sweet metal that we don't have here :darn. There are so many bands I wish would come to America but don't :scry. I know some Arch Enemy and I'm still looking into them, they are on my list of future bands to do research on ;). In the defense of Epica, the style relies of orchestra more. It is also easy to misjudge because the popular songs are generally the songs without death growls. IMHO Epica is nothing without the grunts. I guess it's a big mongrel, but I hardly see it as girly-operatic stuff. Epica isn't even as operatic as old Nightwish. Old Nightwish relied on heavy guitar and the operatic vocals of Tarya. So I dispute your characterization.

Within Temptation is also quite different from all of the above, pretty much because Sharon's voice is significantly dominant over all other instruments. Not really operatic, but certainly more popular and closer to rock style. I grew bored with them years ago, but I still feel they are unfairly generalized - after all, these bands are all better than listening to your retarded classmates play "Barbiegirl."

Melodic death metal's okay.

Some other non-melo-death bands I like are Russians Circles, Malabar Front and A Perfect Circle. All are progressive metal I think. Russian circles are a bit harder to classify as they incorporate so many different sub-genres of metal, but you could also refer to them as an instrumental band.

I love SOAD, I really miss them though too :(. The only up side to the hiatus is Serj Tankian's solo album was pretty ill. Empty Wall and the Unthinking Majority are some of my favorites from that album. Supposedly he's making a second one too.

Eeh umm.. imo the single Pussy is far best song on the Lp tho' I find it's always weird when they try singin in English :d

So if you don't like it there's no need to get the album. Other quite enjoyable tracks are 'Liebe ist für alle da' and 'Roter Sand'. Roter Sand is a slow song, for fans of Ohne Dich and Rosenrot .. there are also some harder tracks like 'Waldmanns Heil' and 'Rammlied' for those who enjoy the hard Rammstein beats.

But don't think Rammstein became softy and all.. if you're looking for disturbing gore lyrics' like in Mein Teil 'Ich tu dir weh' is even sicker :blink

All in all I'd say it's a mediocre Lp, the only plus is that they've covered a lot of different genres and tastes with it, but like already said,.. I really could enjoy 2-3 tracks.

I really like Liebe Is Fur Alle Da IMO. Rammlied is epic, I especially like the Rammlied Thrash Remix that they supposedly got Machine Head to make for them, which is sweet. There is double bass throughout the whole thing :D. The song Waidmanns Heil and Liebe Ist Fur Alle Da are two of my favs. I agree that its not the "best" Rammstein album yet as a whole I still enjoy listening to it a lot.

Fave Bands:

Well, I am open to change, my only problem is that with the recent changes guitar and bass tones have deteriorated. Guitarists just go for the most aggressive tones they can find, where as bassists compromise tone just to be heard... It's a sad thing, specially for a musician like me.

lol, you are right in saying that the genre of metal has gotten so vast that it is hard to clarify what is metal. I have some confidence in doing so because I actually took the time to try and figure most of it out and in general I have a good feel for a good part of it. By all means there are sooooooo many sub-genres of metal that can easily be disputed only to have no resolution. Most bands these days fall under 2 or more of these sub-genres so it is easy to say that one band can fit multiple characteristics of a these said genres.

As for A7X, their newer album is less heavier than their other ones. They kinda broke out of the "metal" scene for some of their songs, like Dear God and Afterlife. You still see their heavy side in songs like Critical Acclaim and Scream as you mentioned yourself. As a band they are still metal, but they ventured into lighter territory with some parts of the album. I still liked it though, just not as much as their earlier albums. I am hoping their new album in the works does take a step back though and gets a bit more heavier :D.

So I was trying to look for some new bands using Pandora and came across this really interesting band Eluveitie. They are like a Celtic Melodic Death Metal band. Lately Ive been listening to a few new bands I found. One of them being Threat Signal which is pretty sick.

I also recently got the newest Eluveitie album and thats been keeping me entertained. What I like about Eluveitie a lot is how they incorporate celtic/folk into the metal genre. It really hits home since I am half Irish and I have even got my dad listening to it who is Irish as well but not as into Death Metal and Metalcore as I am.

...So today, May 16th at 7:45pm.....Ronnie James Dio died of stomach cancer. He was fighting it for many months and was just on his seventh round of chemo therapy when I guess enough was a enough and he finally passed at 67 years of age. For those who don't know Dio was the lead singer for Black Sabbath after Ozzy left and they had many strong years going. Also Dio sang for other bands like Rainbow and even went solo for a while giving us great songs such as "Holy Diver" which was covered by Killswitch Engage (just to give a reference for those who don't know him but might know the song). Lately Dio got back together with the Black Sabbath guys under the name Heaven and Hell and I was blessed to get to see them perform live in New York City last year. One of the best performances I have ever seen in that he was 66 and could still rock harder than the average young band. He was really something special and was devoted to his work and was fortunately for me a big corner stone of my personal metal preference and music collection. Metal is a great part of my life and without Dio something would have been missing from it. The only other information I have is from his official website which has the statement his wife Wendy made: http://www.ronniejamesdio.com/ Best wishes to her in getting through this tough time.

My mom is a jesus-freak and she raised me as one too (there was a point in my life where I started brining a bible to school). But as I grew older and matured, I realized that religion was made by man, and no man is free of flaw. With this said, I don't think I'll be going back or going to any form of faith or religion any time soon. This life is too short for us to confine ourselves in rules that hamper our progress as humans.

Here in the Philippines, Metal was given a bad rep by Christian fanatics who claimed that all forms of rock music is from the devil (my mom included). This way of thinking carried on till the mid 90's, and rock music has only recently been accepted by the general populace (albeit, the wrong kind of rock). Though that may be, we do have a vast underground metal scene here; they don't make much money and record labels won't sign them on, but they're as brutal as they come!

It is such an amazing mixup. Like I've heard many industrial songs from in flames with synthesizers and electronic sound effects in the background but this song takes that to another level. Its literally got the drum & bass back beat behind the band and it fits really well. Also the vocalists switch back and forth giving it this nice mellow yet epic feel to it. I truly love this song and find it to be a great mash up of two different genres that I would never had expected to ever here. Heres the song for those that are interested :) Pendulum feat. DAAAAAAAAAAAMN, and I was just getting past Dio dying too. Sheesh. Well unlike Heaven and Hell which Dio was a major part of so I don't see them continuing, Slipknot will be able to go on. It is sad that it has to be that way but look to Avenged Sevenfold for example. When their drummer Rev died last year, they had to face the same problems. For now they didn't get a new drummer but instead the drummer from Dream Theater, Mike Portnoy is filling in by helping the band to finish their new album and is touring with them in the Rock Star Mayhem Uproar Tour. The beauty of this was that Portnoy was Rev's favorite drummer of all time and then to have his favorite drummer do something for him is just something awesome. So that is one recent and major example of how to handle the situation. I really don't know what to expect Slipknot to do but I'm sure they will still keep going on.

If METALLICA did it when Cliff Burton died, Slipknot should continue as well.

Many of the bands go through break-ups, with members leaving all the time. The scenario is somewhat the same, with exception that a member has passed away. I think they will carry on. Hard to imagine breaking up a band as successful as Slipknot.

Right, they will, but its just something that takes time. Like thorn said it is similar to just having a band member leaving, the only thing is that this process takes a much longer time to get through. See with having a band member leave there is no mourning or resentment involved in getting a new member and you can easily find a replacement in a month. But look at Avenged Sevenfold, Rev has been dead for a year and instead of just finding a new member they got a friend to play in tribute to him. I can only imagine that once the tour is over next year what they are going to do. Yes Portnoy drumming for them is a tribute but its not a solution to Rev's open spot. If anything it is prolonging the inevitable of having to replace their fallen comrade. So overall is is similar to a member leaving but there is a lot more baggage that comes with a death making it a much harder and longer process to get through.

I'm sorry, but did you just compare Cliff Burton era Metallica to Slipknot? I realize that musical taste is to each his own, but you just can't compare one of the forefathers of American Heavy Metal to that thing... It's just unthinkable, even if you're not a purist.

Cliff Burton was a god. Though he didn't revolutionize anything, he did inspire more bassists to be more aggressive and take a stand to not just be part of the background. The moment he died, he took Metallica along with him. Can you really say that about Paul Gray?

No one is really comparing the greatness of people or eras of bands. Whats being discussed is how bands cope and deal with the loss of a member. Slipknot did great things yet I wouldn't dare put them at the level of Metallica....who in their right mind would. But its just a matter of looking at other bands, seeing how they deal with a loss, and seeing if they can take a lesson from them in moving on.

Well thats one thing but at the same time your reaction makes it look like your putting down Paul Gray (even if your not trying to I'm just respectfully letting you know it looks that way) and is that even necessary at this time? The dude just died, your mourn the man, not disrespect him. Yea he may have not been Cliff Burton but he was still part of freakin Slipknot which has done a lot in its own way. Slipknot won a grammy, how many times do you see a metal band like that make it to the grammys and show all those pop morons whats what! And just like anyone else who dies Paul was a human. At this point its not about saying who is better than who but remembering what he did that was great. Either way its still another loss and blow to the metal world and we should all be sad for that.

You can, and I'm not saying grammys matter in metal either. But the one thing metal heads don't like is the lack of representation they get by mainstream media. Like all the horrible shit they call music these days and yet they put metal down. The grammy itself isn't really the case but its the fact that a metal band got it and for once got to infiltrate this mainstream pop world that the grammys mostly surround and show them what real music is. For me and for many that means something. Metallica OBVIOUSLY has done much more but at the same time and as a metal head Slipknot should be respected for doing something like that. I love Metallica and I put them way beyond Slipknot but just because of their differences I'm not gonna judge Slipknot because of what Metallica has done.

Mainstream media can do without metal. Once metal becomes mainstream it turns into a dumbed down version of it's former self for the sheep that want to follow the crowd, but not take on the lifestyle.

I'm not comparing the two bands... In fact, i strongly dissuade people from doing so.

I definitely would not compare the two, their musical styles aren't even the same nor is the stage presence obviously, lol. You are right that metal is not for mainstream but it is nice once in a while to give it to the mainstream that puts out all this stupid shit like justin bieber and hannah montana and call that music. Metal is better not being in the mainstream media but it is nice for them to take it on once in a while and that is what I see Slipknot as doing. If anything it became more of an invasion of the grammys, not that the grammys were accepting them. I'd like to think of them of spies that infiltrated the mainstream and then went to reek havoc from the inside out.

While the music scene right now is absolutely horrible. I believe that the current outlive and outlast method is working quite well. We have seen quite a number of fads pass by and fade away, while true metal fans and supporters live on. I believe that metal is only for the strong willed and the weak should just be content with whatever the media feeds them... they're not worthy.

Cliff Burton was with them for the first three records: Kill 'em All, Ride the Lightning, and Master of Puppets.

From a musical standpoint, the band stopped maturing after Cliff's departure, and even started to regress in the albums that came after Justice for All. They just continued with the SSDD, till they eventually took an epic dump on the fans and released shit albums like Load and Reload (along with everything else that came after those two). Metallica is the perfect example for a great band that sold. Cliff is basically the embodiment of their principles and beliefs, and when he died the band no longer had the courage to go against the status quo. Metallica isn't the only band that's like this, there are several other bands that I grew to love and hate all because they gave in to the whims of the status quo: Guns n' Roses, Van Halen, In Flames to name a few... all bands that I've loved, but soon turned into shit when they sold out... I'd even add Iron Maiden to that list, and I'm a die hard Maiden fan!

Though selling out may be the bane that corrupts the Metal world, it is an unavoidable path that a band goes through once they've reached a certain level of fame and fortune. The only way they can regain their former glory is to produce new songs that are on par/ better than the tracks on their previous non-sellout album

DanielKnoT
May 27, 2010, 11:56 AM
I allways hear comments like this about Metallica, or Gun´s, Iron Maiden, etc, etc and I still dont unterstand why people say this.. "they sold out"

I personally like a band that constantly evolves, tries different stuff... If a band stays in a sound or style for their entire life they will never grow or reach certain status.

Examples.. The record Master of Puppets was incredible, extremly fast, and powerfull. Pure Trash Metal, but then comes And Justice for All was amazing with a better sound, more refined, combinations of fast and slow tempos and still this was a great album.

What can I say about the Black Album? Here, all the people start saying that they sold out. Like it or Not, was an amazing album, they didnt made those long songs of 7 or 8 minutes to start getting space in TV and Radio (This was a Bad move?), different sound, different style, and still was an amazing album. (22 million records sold)

Is boring when a band make the same records with the same style over and over and over again, you get tired...

This is why bands like Megadeth, Anthrax or Slayer for example, stayed behind compared to Metallica, and this is why Metallica is considered one of the best and the most influential band in ROCK!!!! Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

And Cliff.. He was great, but Jason and Robert are not behind.. I never been in a live concert of Metallica with Cliff in the Bass (I have 25 years), but all the concerts that I´ve been with Jason or Robert in bass.. OMG

Read what I typed closely. I want bands to change, but I want them to change for the better. Metallica has done nothing but regress since the death of Cliff; they lost their roots.

Anthrax is stagnant, Slayer is stagnant, but Megadeth has evolved many times over (for both bad and good). It takes a keen ear to notice that they went from pure thrash to thrash with neo-classical and jazz influences. I'd rather see a band stagnate and remain in with the hard core fans than see them lose their die hard supporters. Evolution is a great thing if a band manages to keep their roots as they progress.

Everyone is entitled to his or her own opinion, but I'm completely adamant with my stance on music. Jason and Robert are clowns compared to Cliff. The bass lines after Cliff's unfortunate departure have been dull and over simplified. How simple you ask? I was able to learn "enter sandman" over the phone while my friend played it on his stereo (I didn't own a copy of the album, and we had to perform it within the week).

The rock and roll hall of fame is nothing but a farce now. It's based on fame and money, not skill. As for music videos... They're nice to have for exposure, but they should never be in the top ten list of accomplishments for a metal band... Like I've said before, metal is no for the weak. I don't expect the sheep to understand metal, and to dumb metal down for the sheep to consume is a complete travesty and would only result in mediocre pop bands that use distortion to label themselves as a metal band...The very thought of it makes me cringe.

I completely understands you.. :)

But lets say, that if you are in a band and you wanna be succesfull, sometimes you have to sold your soul to the devil, and by devil i mean TV, Radio, MTV, Grammys, Music Industry Corporations, etc. Do I like it? NO, but it is like that..

Is very difficult, be that succesfull staying in your own style and roots. There are hundreds of examples of bands that made an amazing and great first record and then they become crap, and in these days is even more frequent.

If you see it as a fan point of view, of course you will say that they sold out.. But try to see it as a member of the band.. Or any band...

I hate that game and lots of people who think that know metallica (and other bands) only they play a dozen of songs on guitar hero the possibillity of a megadeth guitar hero creeps me out. But even if this kids say they are fans they only care about the band until the master the game.

I have seen it from a band PoV. I've jumped from one band to another over the years, trying to make it big... I've decided to stick with my current band, and I don't care if we make it big. It's the musical integrity that matters. I'd rather take a cheese grater to my groin than sell out.

I find that guitar hero/rock band is just plain silly. I've tried playing them, and by god... Playing the actual song on an actual guitar/bass is miles easier than those silly guitar shaped controllers. I don't think they should call it "guitar hero" or "rock band". More like "Guitar for the musically handicapped" or "Tard Band"...

I totally agree with you Guitar Hero can be fun but only for someone who doesnt play an actual instrument because the song timing and stuff has nothing to do with the game timing and that can be confusing. My friends make fun of me for being a total noo b at guitar hero but then I pwn all of them on real guitar.

Usually I go to a store where we can play GH whenever I go to Mc donalds with my friends. I kind of like when people at the store make fun of me is that normal? But then again most of them never played anything besides a plastic flute.

I've seen a brazilian band called sofly, they were pretty good and full of energy.

Then Motorhead and I got pretty worried because they played one song and the equipement failed but they came in a few minutes.

There was also Megadeth wich was the main reason I went to the festival.

And lastly Ramstein who were headlining the event It was cool but I'm not really a fan (and I don't think they should be headlining whit such legends on stage)

Turns out that it is a song about environmentalism. I was really worried about this song at first because it makes Disturbed sound like they are getting on board with Liberals and Mainstream media which is usually a bad sign. However, that being said the song is still pretty heavy and dark at times so even if the song is about environmentalism they add an apocalyptic theme to it and its a nice and redeeming quality to it. Thanks man, I didn't even know that they had one out :darn. Shame on me for not being up to date with them, lol.

I honestly don't know if I like it or not. It starts off a little slower and then gets better as it goes on. I liked how it finished up the best. The music video is another story though, that one is odd, lol. I think the song has potential and it could grow on me after listening to it a few times but as of now I'm not that into it.

For a change of pace I'm posting about some Rap Metal :p. Thats right, the 90's are back with the return of Limp Bizkit! They've got a new album, Golden Cobra coming out sometime this fall and I'm psyched for it!. On top of that they released a single to get our lips wet called Why Try (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o93201IoFTk). Its a really great song and Fred Durst sounds better than ever. I found the lyrics to be pretty catchy and the sound is phenomenal. Rap Metal may not be some people's taste but all I know is that I've listened to the song 20 times already and I'm still headbanging :XD. Check the link out and let me know if you guys like the song :thumbs...........or if you absolutely hate it :scry.

I like quite a bit of their stuff, but most of that is the Rap Metal, Heavy in your face stuff. Not the slow more rap orientated songs. The new song Why Try though is just the style of Limp Bizkit that I like and thats why I'm very happy about it.

O and Rearranged is a good song :p.

For asian metal I only know X-japan. But some of my friends listen to a lot of asian metal (mostly korean and japanese)

I'm not sure if I would dub it "asian metal" but a friend of mine lead me to this band called Dir En Grey (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yXu9FNEjChU), they are metal-esque so I thought I would introduce my post with something on-topic. As of late, my two favorite bands are Between the buried and Me (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ZYJHel-mgM) and Mastodon (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Pm16ythlec). Although for those of you wanting a melodic technical jazzy brutal fest (yes all of those in one), please do me the honor of leading you to some bands that sound nothing like the previously mentioned. I bring you Enfold Darkness (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u2IGkb8qOm8), Sons of Aurelius (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gfS4I2-Srok) and Veil of Maya (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ag9tsH3xJZ0&feature=related). Hey, no_regrets. Thanks a lot for posting here. Thats quite a few bands. Other than Mastodon I don't know any of them so I'll go through them all then post letting you know what I think asap ;)

As for my own music right now I am in love with the new Heaven Shall Burn album Invictus (Iconoclast III) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Invictus_%28Iconoclast_III%29). Its a freakin ridiculously heavy ban and in my opinion the best and most epic, spine shivering Scream/Growl ever! There is one song called Combat (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ugbKuBoUBg&feature=related&fmt=18) What makes this song sick is that it actually combines techno elements with it during the song and they actually replace the drums with a hard bass beat at parts while still maintaining the metal. The other song on the album, the one that I feel holds the most emotion and heart is Given In Death (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2HgquPGm2gk&fmt=18). What makes this song special is that they have a guest female single that combos up AMAZINGLY with the Screams and Growls and it really get a lot of spine shivers from it. Its such an amazing song and a wonderful mash up of vocals. The soft female voice along with the epicness of the Screams really moves me. I love this style so much that I looked up the female singer and I found out she is in her own band called Deadlock which I'm now getting into just because I love her vocals and that style of music. Check out the Deadlock myspace for yourselves (http://www.myspace.com/deadlock) ;).

So thats where I am at right now. Hope you guys like the Heaven Shall Burn songs and let me know what you think ;). To me they are both really unique and powerful songs and I hope to get a few of you guys into the band :thumbs. I'm hoping for some good feedback!

Haha, no problem! I welcome you back with open arms! As for Maiden I'm actually going to see them this monday at Madison Square Garden :p. Its gonna be epic! I love Fear of the Dark. I've been trying to get a full discography from them though in High Quality but have been failing miserably. I just wanted to have everything of theirs this way I'd be ready for the concert but it looks like thats not going to happen. Also Dream Theater is going to be opening for them. I don't love them but at least expect a good performance from them. Anywho I'll be sure to rub it in your face after I go Bot :thumbs. Maybe I'll even have a video or two from it on my youtube page.

So what did you think of those other songs I posted by Heaven Shall Burn on the other page? Are they down your alley or are they too epic for you :p.

Wow, what a great band! And the song "Combat"! :headbang I looked up the lyrics and it is EPIC!!!

especially this verse:

"A life without a future, you will forget your wishes
And nothing to embrace, but the rifle in your hands"

"Given In Death" Is an example of how two totally different voices can mesh well together.
The Female's voice is really beautiful. Looking up her band now!!!

@A_I - The female singer's name is Sabine Weniger and the band she does full time for is Deadlock. I posted the myspace so anyone could listen and get a feel for their style. They pretty much do the that song Given in Death does but all the time. They are a pretty good Melodic Death Metal band as well. They compliment well with the Heaven Shall Burn craze I've been on :XD. Anywho I liked Deadlock so much I got their discography and I'm checking out their latest two albums right now getting a better feel for the band :thumbs.

Hi.

I'm not really a huge metal fan. I personally prefer alernative rock more tbh but I came across this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=umNkAfTwDR4&feature=related) awesome tune and I had to post it in this thread.

Other tunes I find interesting:

- Tyr - Tróndur í Gøtu (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SXjF9po2hYk&feature=related)
- Tyr - Into The Storm (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TLAq5_L_fu0&feature=related)
- Chalice - Memorial Embers (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ADJ2t6xLspo&feature=related)
- Haggard - Heavenly Damnation (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DAJh6AQ3q-s)
- Summoning - Long Lost To Where No Pathway Goes (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YBfkDH3F1GA)
- Haggard - Eppur Si Muove (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J_HGCDJshto) (Haggard are awesome!)

As you can see, I'm more of a Gothic/Symphonic-Metal fan. xD I really love the orchestration, harmonisations and also some of the vocal capabilities that some of these "singers" are able to achieve and perform so well. EPICA (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kRXuuvKuJ-w) are quite epic actually (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xbv65llQ0e0&feature=related). Are any of you guys, a fan of Drum & Bass by any chance? Nightwish still ownz (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8S1yQ303OeI) imho. :)

Thanks for posting Jin! The first few songs you posted seem more like Folk (maybe Viking?) Metal. To me they reminded me of toned down versions of Eluveitie. This song is called "Inis Mona" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iijKLHCQw5o). This band is more like a Melodic Death/ Folk Metal band. Its a little heavier than the ones you posted but it takes the same basic theme and kicks it up a notch, let me know if you like it ;). It might be a little heavy to your liking but I'm trying to work with what your into and hoping that I can get you listening to some heavier stuff :p.

I'm not as big with the Gothic metal as I am with Melodic Death Metal but I do like Symphonic Metal. I enjoy Nightwish as well although I am not as into Epica.

Finally got to checking out all the music you posted no_regrets :p. Between the Buried and Me is pretty unique. I like the baroque feel I get when listening to the guitar in that song, I feel like I'm listening to classical music when I'm obviously not, lol. I like em and I'll keep them on my list for bands to look into more.

As for the other bands I like them musically, but the Screams and Growls are too rough and sporadic for my liking. I'm not really into the random and more chaotic and REALLY rough vocals. I'm really picky when it comes to my screams and some of the ones you posted are bordering on Hardcore sounding which I am not a fan of. That being said out of all those Veil of Maya was the one I was vocally able to bear the most and I could listen to it over again. If the vocals grow on me maybe I could get into those. Again thanks a lot for posting and I'm hoping to seeing you around here more often :thumbs.

Thanks for checking out my stash Arrogance. I like how you phrased your post, you weren't rejecting me just letting me know your personal preference, which is a form of disagreement I highly admire. With that said, I was just listening to that Heaven Shall Burn band. I was actually half way through Combat when I saw you had singled it out ha. I understand what you meant about the vocals so as a Metal Fan I appreciate your "pickyness" a.k.a. standards. But yea they were pretty good they kept a nice rhythm throughout the whole song, and I loved the techno incorporation as I was a Techno fan long before I really got into music in general. As a whole they kind of reminded me of a french-metal band called Gojira (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CqLh2-MUhNk&feature=related), they have pretty nice vocals as well and the singing when it comes definitely fits. I'll be back here for sure though, I love a good shout-out. :beer

No problem. I understand that people have different tastes especially when it comes to metal. Metal it just too vast of a genre that is hast hundred's of sub-genres and many bands even fall into more than one of those sub genre's. I myself posted the new Limp Bizkit single the other day which is Rap Metal and I know that not every person here likes that either. Thorn even flat out said he didn't like it, lol. As for your techno comment, the reason why I like it is because I actually still listen to techno as well. I'm way more into metal but I love a good hard bass beat from time to time as well. In general I just love fast passed and epic music and I find both those traits in Metal and Techno. Thats why I personally get excited over mash ups of the two and Industrial Metal which incorporates many electronic beats into the songs as well (Static-X (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8_B8-ZnW2w4) is AMAZING when it comes to that :thumbs).

Now Gojira is more to my liking. I'm going through a bunch of their songs on youtube and I'm liking it. I think they could grow on me with time. Just need to keep listening to them and try and get a feel for it. Thanks for the heads up with them ;).

O man what an amazing concert. I ended up seeing them live last night with Dream Theater opening for them at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Sold out show and I was close to nose bleed seats but I still had a great view and the show was fantastic from anywhere in that arena.

First things first, Dream Theater was actually fantastic! I've heard them before and I actually have a few albums by them but I got sick of them after a while, but after hearing them live I really got some new found respect for them and I plan on trying to get back into them and more than before.

NOW ON TO THE MAIN EVENT! MAIDEN FREAKIN RULED!!!! Most extravagant stage I've seen to date. It was basically a giant playground. Bruce was running around the whole thing, jumping in the air, throwing his hands up, etc the whole time while maintaining great vocals. They played all the good stuff: Brave New World, Iron Maiden, Fear of the Dark, The Number of the Beast, and even their new single El Dorado was quite enjoyable. I actually liked it better live.

To sum it all up I had a great f*cking night! And to top it off I have a treat for everyone!.......VIDEOS!!! Thats right I recorded a few songs from this fantastic sold out show! My camera was bugging out a bit for the first time ever because of the lighting and it was overheating too I believe but I still managed to get a few good videos. I hope you guys enjoy and let me know what you think! Stay Metal! :shakefist

Here is my video of Blood Brothers which the band actually ended up dedicating to Ronnie James Dio, RIP. The video starts off with Bruce's dedication and his speech in which he credits Dio for the Devil Horns! \m/ (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tHAsM4Zfrts)

Well, I'm a huge metal fan. *insert ascii*

My tastes are all over the place really. My all time favorites are hardly that well known, since melodic death isn't as popular as I once thought it was. Insomnium, Kalmah, Eternal Tears of Sorrow, Amon Amarth and old Nightwish (weird company NW has there huh o_0). If you haven't listened to them already, doubt you would like them, but once you get into the whole vocal thing and learn to appreciate the epic, epic music, you're quickly on your way to a mind trip where you'd hang out with the old Vikings.

But, something I think people would appreciate much more, seeing as this is MH after all, maybe checking out Blood Stain Child (name doesn't really convey the right picture don't worry). It's a mix of techno and metal, and the band is Japanese. The lyrics are mostly English though. I recommend checking out the song Freedom, to see if you'd like the band. The last album was much more technoish, that can be good or bad, depending on the person.

Here's (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2oi-8xl7uZs&feature=related) the link to the Freedom song.

Anyways, nice to see that there are plenty of metalheads here \m/_{0_o}

Well there is no rock thread so I'll ask here.

Has anyone been to a Guns n' Roses concert in these last few years? How was it?
Does axl still has his voice?

Guns n' roses is my favorite band but you see axl kind of looks like he lost his voice and he's old from the videos I've seen. So should I spend my money on it?

I went to see slash last month and it was amazing I wonder if Axl and the guys can top that.

Oh there's also Sebastian Bach with Guns n' roses I heard a few songs from him he's pretty good.

When I saw AD/DC, sooooooooooo many parents brought their kids and bought them these flashing devil horns hats and it looked awesome on the kids :tem lol

@BB, I haven't heard anything about GNR's recent performances. But imo, Axel has screwed that band over. Chinese Democracy was less than good. There was only one song I thought was good and I've forgotten it....:oh Get Back or something.

GNR is metal, lol. Just that some of their stuff borderlines hard rock as well. There are many other bands that bounce back and forth from hard rock to alternative metal these days as well so its pretty common to have borderline metal bands.

I saw GNR (the new one) back in 2006 I believe at Madison Square Garden. Opening bands were Sebastian Bach and Papa Roach. Axl's vocals were still pretty good although I had an angle seat and I was able to see back stage. A few times he would run back stage and take a wiff out of an oxygen tank because he seems to have lung problems from his "hardcore" early days. Although he was running out of breathe the built in spots for him to run back stage into the show lineup so it didn't ruin anything. Plus one song Sebastian even came back out and sang with him cause they're like best buds. Overall it was a very good show and the talent for his new band was pretty good.

Recently I heard from Eddy Trunk that he did an underground show in a department store in Manhattan. It was one of those things that was rumor based and a surprised so people just showed up and after about 500 people they closed the doors and they had a show in the store. From what I head Trunk said that it was a pretty solid show. Now that was about 3 months ago so what he's doing now I have no idea so take my information or leave it :p. haha.

GNR was pretty much a hard rock metal band for me. Very few of their songs could be categorized as heavy metal. The metal of 80-90s is as good as dead. The early work of Metallica, Megadeth, Testament, Metal Church, Skid Row and so many others was what got me into metal. Today's sound is more fusion of different genres. Many of the upcoming bands try to experiment with the sound, in effort to create something new. I say, I am not a big fan of latest heavy metal. I do not listen to it anymore. Only Black and Doom metal interests me.

Yeah I only got to know Myles and Alter Brigde after I heard his songs on slash's CD I must say he's one of the best singers I've heard and he's great live. That is problably the closest thing to GN'R in their prime you can find nowadays. Myles can sing anything from GN'R to velvet revolver. It's a shame they didn't played tha song slash did with Lemmy from motorhead.

SOOOOOO I just picked up Avenged Sevenfold's new album Nightmare and I'm enjoying it. I'm enjoying it a bit more than their self titled thats for sure. If anything its a very emotional album (I don't know how much of it Rev's death added to the emotion because all the songs were written before he died but I don't know how many were already recorded. Either way this album displays a very dark and emotional side and for some reason I'm really enjoying it. Plus Shadows Growls again! Its one song but I'll take it :D. Its the track God Hates Us. The growl is different from his previous one but its still really good and refreshing to hear him do it well once again (even if it only really is just once :p). If your an A7X I recommend that you pick up the album. If your an older fan but didn't like that last album as much, this one takes a step back to City of Evil. As a whole its not as heavy but I think those that are on the line after the last album "should" like this one a bit better.

I don't know much about the variety of sub-genres of Metal but the bands and songs I linked in my previous post all incoporate some kind of symphonic orchestration, sounds and structure into their tracks. Some may sway more into folk or viking, so yeah. I'm really not a fan of that heavy metal stuff lol but you can always try and link me to some tunes; I'm open to anything and I'll give it a listen. :amuse That Inis Mona track was cool, I didn't really like the vocals much though. :p

Nightwish are awesome. I'll try and post more in this thread when I come across some cool tunes or whatnot. Have fun everyone! :)

I've gotta say that Dragonforce was pretty awful live. I saw them at the first Rockstar Mayhem festival 2 years ago. I definitely wouldn't pay to see them in particular again. They aren't as "perfect" live and they try doing too much and it just doesn't happen. The drumming isn't as fast and the guitars got sloppy. Also the vocals were INCREDIBLY off and there were times I couldn't even understand the words that were being said. Plus because all dragonforce songs sounds pretty similar I couldn't tell what the lineup was because all the songs were pretty much butchered. Overall a pretty bad experience :darn.

You guys are pretty lucky with the fact that bands want to go to your countries/live in your countries. The two best I've had so far here in the Philippines was the 2004 Billy Sheehan bass clinic and the 2009 Arch Enemy concert...the others were "meh"...

I've heard the same things about Dragon Force from friends. I was supposed to go and see them (back when I lived in the UK), but I had to cancel because I couldn't get off work... Can't say I regret not being able to see them though.

Yea exactly! I was at a festival so it wasn't even like I specifically payed to see them. Going into the concert though I didn't really dislike DragonForce, there are times I actually enjoy them but I really need to be in the mood for them for some reason and that mood doesn't come often. So me actually enjoying them at the time decided to go see them only to be heavily disappointed. I ended up missing Machine Head because I went to see DragonForce instead :sweat. People often connected them with emo culture because of some songs that were named a bit emoishly, but once I actually went and listened to it, it's good music.

The genre would be metalcore, IIRC, if that means anything to anyone.

My only other thing to add to your list would be Heaven And Hell (Black Sabbath) because Dio still had it last year when I saw him. Heaven And Hell sounded even better now that they were all older. I'll agree the recent Metallica is not great at all. But their earlier stuff like:

Kill 'Em All
Ride the Lightning
Master of Puppets
…And Justice for All
Metallica

was great. It was after 1994 they started to experiment and tried to have different sound and all that stuff, which became boring and they lost their originality. The reason you may find them boring and repetitive is mainly because Metal/Rock changed so much after late 1990s and early 2000s. Its not what I grew up listening to, the sound is more alternative, grunge, and industrial then it ever used to be. And one of the reason I listen to Doom and Black Metal, as they are keeping their originality.

I actually like their newer stuff as well. I liked Death Magnetic as an album because compared to St. Anger it was actually returning to their routes a little bit more but then also went in a new direction. The point I see with them is that they just don't want to keep putting out the same thing every time so they tried different things for their newer albums. St. Anger definitely wasn't their best album bit I even find songs on their that I actually enjoy. As a whole I love Metallica, I may not listen to them every few seconds nor do I actually want to because there are so many other bands that I love but if a Metallica song comes on the radio (and as long as its not Enter Sandman) then I'm gonna listen to it and love it.

So later today I'm heading out to a Creed and Skillet concert. Now Creed is mostly hard rock however they have a few songs that border on metal in the sense of their heaviness. Skillet on the other hand bounces from Hard Rock to Alternative Metal very often and I really love them for that style. Both bands also come under Christian Rock/Metal so that definitely is a plus in my book. Looking forward to going and I'm hoping it doesn't rain because its in an outdoor stadium :darn.

For those who don't know the bands here are some links

One of Creed's heaviest and most metalesque songs "Bullets" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PwpjSBlTfSk)

One of my favorite Skillet Songs - "Collide". Its very powerful in terms of vocals and I love the high points of it. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XhmXehFixJs)

Again these are hard rock bands that border on alternative metal so some of you really heavy guys might not enjoy them as much but I thought I'd drop them off anyway. Plus I'm too excited for the concert not to talk about these bands :XD.

The concert was amazing! Skillet was probably one of the best opening bands I've ever seen. They had a pretty extensive stage set up for just being an opening band. I think parts of it were even better than Creeds main stage. They had moving platforms, smoke, and lights. What was sweet about the platforms was that the violinist and cheloist would stand on them and play while they would move up and down. Overall it was a pretty sick set up :headbang. Anywho the concert was in an outside stadium/theater that was actually on the water. It was raining and the water level was rising around the theater to the point where the first few sections actually got flooded. Overall it was pretty epic.

As usual I bring back the gift of videos!!! So far I only have two skillet up and I plan on putting a creed up at some point ;).

Lately I've been teetering between Disturbed's new album Asylum and the band Flyleaf.

Asylum overall is a really amazing album, its heavy and its got everything good in it that Disturbed has always brought to the table. Some of my favorite songs would be Asylum, Crucified, Another Way To Die, My Child, and more but I don't want to just list the whole album :p.

Flyleaf on the other hand is a bit more in the rock direction but their female singer does scream on occasion and that is pretty sick. Plus they have some pretty good christian messages in a few of their songs and thats always a plus when it comes to me :)

Latelly I've seen many metalhead that are christian and that spread the christian message in their songs and still the church still has many issues with metal only because metal artists wear black and look a bit different than usual.

It depends on what bands. Many metal bands are not Christian obviously and promote things that don't reflect Christian Catholic ideals. So its just that they are very weary when entering that territory. Metal and as a cultural scene isn't christian so its understandable for them to be a bit at odds but I do agree with you and what your saying. In terms of the music and what it is in itself beside the culture around metal, there are many bands that are acceptable and even produce christian lyrics.

It's great to try and get new techniques, but as Billy Sheehan puts it in this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3CAGinmT9Po&feature=related) video, it's not really about the technique, but the desire to play music that makes a musician better at what he/she does.

Wait so did you see muse on Saturday??? I can't tell if your being sarcastic or not? :XD

Yes Muse, although they aren't necessarily heavy, they do have some pretty good guitar solos from time to time. I like them for that and for the uniqueness of many of their songs :).

Yea, Flyleaf is a new interest to me. I've always known about them but I guess once I found out she screamed at times I finally decided to make a move on them and now I actually like them quite a bit. I dunno, I've always liked Female vocalists especially in metal bands and rock bands that are on the heavier side. They always add a nice touch to things. I also love songs with Male and Female vocals because the contrast of the two are usually awesome :).

@BBB Banana- Yeah man. I used to train heavily every day and it just resulted in me getting lots of blisters/sprained wrists/fingers and all I got was a little improvement. The moment I just let the music and desire to play take over was when I actually started to get better at playing my bass. No point in traveling if you've got no destination in mind.

Yea I love female screamers/growlers but they can get VERY creepy sometimes. I never heard of them before, they are a little too Avant Garde for my taste and a bit too screamo. And what makes her creepy is that she sings and screams in that avant garde way but she looks so innocent :s.

What I mostly like is stuff like Fireflight - Unbreakable (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pWRJAHaOrYg&feature=channel). Now thats a bit on the lighter side, yet I really like the emotion I get from those vocals. Thats something I find to be one of the bright sides to a female vocalist is that they portray emotion very well into their lyrics. Now that I think about it I don't actually have too many female growlers on my IPOD list....hmmm. I do like female growlers but many of them are iffy as I explained above.

Well I went tough half of your list tomorrow I'll go trough the rest cuse I'm a bit sleepy now so I won't remember what I hear.

I like a lot of them speacially the first two. they have some of my fave guitarrists in there George Lynch, Malmstem, Vai.

I think I should hear more stuff by the G3 as I am a huge Vai fan. And maybe I could go and see satriani live next month :)

The G3 lineup changes slightly each year, the only real constant is Steve Vai I think... Or was it Satriani...hmhmh. They've had Malmsteen, Roth, Pettrucci, Johnson, etc... in their ranks.

I like metalcore, but thats not screamo thats why :darn, lol.

I saw 36 Crazyfists live before they were big like they are now :p. I've seen all of those bands you listed live except for for Of Mice and Men. They aren't too bad actually, the vocals are teetering on being screamo but just not there yet. I may actually look into them a bit more just for kicks.

I think I need to make a list of all the bands I've seen, let me go work on it :ninja.

I used to listen to Post-hardcore but I find it boring now :XD Maybe I listened to much of it back then.
I still listen to it from time to time though.

I always thought that screamo was a sub-genre of post hardcore.
