Aaaw, next chapter's gonna be another flashback. I agree, Nagi will catch her as she's falling while everyone else thinks that she fell all the way down and died. But, they never find her body so they'll assume she disappeared. Problem solved, Ta-ta \o/
Awell, it's great to get to know about his parents and the story behind, but it's dragging this arc out and I want them to finish and go back to Mahora for training. (Yes, I want the girls to get some power-ups)

I kinda agree with this, but then it occurred to me that one reason we might be getting this backstory now is to better set up Asuna's history as well for when the real one eventually makes her reappearance. Hopefully that is the case, and we finally get some plot/character progression for her soon. ;p

No way. Anyway, I thought this chapter was really good. We all know Arika won't die there though, because she hasn't had Negi yet, and they've yet to rescue Asuna.

So when we first saw Asuna all chained up, and was rescued by Nagi - that was after all this? Is that where she's sealed up right now? And along the way to get her into the old world Takamichi's master dies? But if this is so how did they meet Asuna in the first place?
I'm so confused about the timeline right now...

Asuna chained was probably before, during the war, based on the ships and the fact there are people nearby her, whereas based on this chapter no one but Arika knows how to get to her.
Could be wrong, but I'm willing to bet a lot more gets answered regarding that in the next chapter or two.

My Thoughts after reading the chapter
1) Kurt's fear about Ricardo in the previous chapter is seen to be grounded in knowledge of what MM is like given what he tells Al
2) Is it just Al who was likely to be arrested or would Nagi and the rest have been arrested as well if they had returned to help?
While I suspect it's all of them, it's possible that it was just Al who was wanted by MM at that point. I am also wondering if Al provided Kurt with some of his information in the past through use of his artifact.
I was curious about the young Tosaka scene as I cant see how Kurt got hold of the information about him.
3) As I predicted last week Arika framed with twisted/manipulated evidence by the senate. The reason for it seems to be twofold firstly to use her as a scapegoat for the war and secondly to try to force her to reveal information about gaining access the ruins of Ostia
4) Possible explanation for Asuna's age discrepancy if the sealing had the "side effect" of putting her into stasis or freezing time, as it appears at this point she is trapped at the heart of the seal.
If this is the case then I suspect that Asuna remained sealed for a few more years before she is rescued at some point prior to Negi's birth.
5) It looks like Fate is looking for the same thing the Senator was in the ruins of Ostia. Its possible that in addition to Asuna there is something in the Ostian Palace that is needed to help save/destroy the magic world.
Tying into the point about Asuna, Fate seemed to be waiting for the magic currents to be suitable, given that magic no longer works in the ruins of Ostia its possible that Nagi had to do something similar to rescue Asuna if suitable Magic currents allow Magic to be used when it otherwise would not.
6) Kurt is already showing indications of disastisfaction with Nagi's methods and where are Jack and Al at this point?
While we are all expecting Nagi to rescue Arika is it possible that Jack and/or Al do so instead. This would allow Nagi to keep his word about helping others while still saving her
7) Why can no magic be performed in Cerberus Canyon?
Given that its fairly safe to assume that Arika gets rescued next chapter, it looks likely that next week could be the final installment and may even be concluded by the mid point of the chapter unless Kurt goes on to cover (past) Asuna's rescue as well. However I expect that story to be covered either when we get back to real Asuna or after she is rescued.

Take your time. The better quality, the more it's worth waiting. :)
For those that don't mind waiting a few days longer, I'm planning on continuing my own scans as long as my schedule allows (found here (http://rehwynscans.blogspot.com/), which is the same as my sig link). I hadn't posted direct links here because I was under the impression we weren't supposed to, due to the Kodasha C&D letter MH got a few weeks ago, but I suppose I could always just make a post here whenever I finish to let people know it's ready. ^^;
They'll pretty much always be several days behind the speed scans though, because the MQ/HQ raws I use (Rena-Chan's 3000 pixel raws) generally don't come out until Friday/Sat, whereas Raw-Paradise's come out on Monday/Tuesday. I use Rena-Chan's because it's pretty much impossible for me to get a MQ/HQ release from R-P raws without completely redrawing everything, which would take longer than just waiting for Rena-Chan in the first place. :p
Anyways, I do also upload my releases to MangaToshokan (http://www.mangatoshokan.com/), so if you prefer an online reader, you can find them there. You can even sign up and add Negima to your Reading List to make it easy to see when new chapters are available. :)

If this is the case then I suspect that Asuna remained sealed for a few more years before she is rescued at some point prior to Negi's birth.
That may be an explanation but then there is a scene in volume 19 where Al makes a comment that may imply that even before the end of the war and her sealing, she already was older than she looks.
The scene is on the first chapter of Volume 19, chapter 169, page 4. When Asuna remember her first encounter with Nagi and remember her true name (she forgets after the shock of almost seeing Setsuna and Konoka making a pactio). Acording with AQS translations:
"Nagi: Royal Princess of the Dusk... what the hell is that?
(...)
Nagi: But they're the imperial family, aren't they? I heard she is just a little girl too!
(...)
Al: (...) besides, just like me, the little girl's age too can't be judged simply by appearance."

anyone notice that the old ship of nagi is the same as the one ala alba is using? well, at least the type.
Kanzid
October 28, 2009, 04:28 AM
Yeah I noticed the ship design too, could be interesting, it's also worth noting we got almost no info on what Haruna did while she wasn't with the group to get the ship.
My Thoughts on the questions above.
My Thoughts after reading the chapter
2) Is it just Al who was likely to be arrested or would Nagi and the rest have been arrested as well if they had returned to help?
While I suspect it's all of them, it's possible that it was just Al who was wanted by MM at that point. I am also wondering if Al provided Kurt with some of his information in the past through use of his artifact.
All of them were framed for the assault on the Governor in Rakan's flashback so it's quite possible the government could get them arrested too.
Another possible reason for Rakan and maybe Al or Eishun to do the rescuing is Rakan at least is primarily a Ki user, and when we first got the explanation about the two it said
Magic users get power by drawing it from the surroundings
Whereas Ki users get the power from within which might make it easier for a ki user to operate in the canyon.

But if that canyon power is similar to Asuna's magic cancel ability then even Ki attacks/abilities would be useless there as we saw it back in ch 70 when even Kota's Ki/vaccum skills where also in-effective against Asuna's ability.

Might not be as simple as black and white, good and evil. There are shades of gray people can be, which looking at past 'villains' is something not abnormal in Negima.

How would Nagi rescue Arika when there isn't enough magic to fly? How about an airplane? He could swoop in and scoop her up with a net in midair like the CIA recovers film capsules from spy satellites. Airplanes don't care about the local mana levels being too low to do magic. Or maybe he'll just use one of those air cushions stuntmen use, again, not magic-dependent.
The situation with Arika taking the blame and getting executed reminds me of a science-fiction story I read nearly twenty years ago, The Face of the Enemy by Don Hawthorne. It was in the second War World (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/War_World) collection, and it was about a Commodore who wins an important battle for his crumbling empire, only to be made a scapegoat and executed by unscrupulous superiors who are more interested in stealing credit for a victory than winning the war or rebuilding their Empire into something worth fighting for (BTW, this has some of the best space battles ever written, and would make a great anime.)
Akamatsu-san is taking Negima! into the kind of cynical territory more familiar to the world of, say, Battle Angel Alita: Last Order with its multi-layered double-crosses, ruthless politics, and media manipulation to bamboozle and distract ordinary people from any challenge to this or that regime.
Anyway, I hope I'm not getting too far off-topic, and I really hope to interest at least one or two of you into reading something a bit more meaty than Negima! If you're interested, the story I talked about is part of a series by Jerry Pournelle (http://www.jerrypournelle.com/), Larry Niven (http://www.larryniven.org/), S.M.Stirling (http://www.smstirling.com/), and others about a now-alternate future history. There are a lot of military stories, but even in the War World books its not all fighting. It includes a sci-fi classic, The Mote in God's Eye, about the first human contact with a non-human intelligent race.

The LQ scan at Raw Paradise is not only blurred and rather small, but clipped; some dialogue is literally cut off. However, in the face of the legal onslaught of Kodansha's legal department, I'll take it, hoping to lay hands on a hardcopy of Shounen Magazine (they don't get to the Kinokuniya store here in Silicon Valley until a week or two after they're released in Japan.)
Just got the Tokyopop version of Volume 24. It can be interesting to compare the scanlation(s) with TP's efforts. "Your mileage may vary." It certainly varies a lot from my own efforts.

I wouldn't expect much more than that from a LQ Cam raw. :p
Their actual scan should probably be here Mon/Tues. R-P has switched to doing their normal scans at 2500 px height now instead of 1400 px, which means I might actually be able to work with them and get a MQ/HQ result instead of waiting for Rena-Chan's raws. It's highly likely her's will still be better to work with though, so if I try the new R-P raws and don't like the result, I'll wait for hers. :p

Hmm, it seems Raw-Paradise is still doing all their Shounen Magazine scans in 1400 px despite some of their others changed to 2500 px. Soooo... sticking with Rena's for now. :p

ok i just read through the entire 268 chapters in the past 3 weeks. i might have missed the part about asuna and arika's relationship. i guess they might not be related by blood because the senator did say in this chapter that when arika dies that the blood line ends. so i just wanted to know what is arika and asuna's relationship (clearly asking cause asuna and negi are probably going to end up together and i'm not really interested in the whole incest thing).

Apparently, Kurt was in love or liked Arika. Thats what Nodoka asks him and it gets confirmed with the artifact. I loled at that part XD

Cnet's trans is up now and I just read over it. Seems Kurt and Takamichi decide at the end to take care of the Senate's deceptions and injustice on their own (seperate from Ala Rubra). Since Takamichi managed to make it to the magic world a while back before the gates closed, I wonder what developments are in store on that front. I can already imagine some dialogue between Takamichi and Kurt.
On a related note, Rena's raw isn't out yet, but I'd imagine it should be in the next 9 hours or so. If that's the case, shouldn't be too long before I can get a scan going. :)

^ Well it seems that the others of Negi's group are also seeing what is happening in that room because of Asakura's artifact.
Also it seems that some of them have noticed that there was a Asuna during the Magic world war & somehow links her to the Asuna they know (by the looks of Setsuna, Konoka & Chamo's reaction & also because of Asuna's reaction). Though i might be wrong because i can't read japanese.

It seemed like that to me as well, it also seemed that Yue was getting further information from her Artifact.
Given that the Ariadne girls are still involved, I wonder if they somehow end up at Mahora as well at the end of the current arc.

Thats the problem when we get a LQ raw quickly, people are less likely to upload a HQ version.
Anway thoughts on the chapter now released,
Fairly standard rescue fair, and even though we dont see the fight it goes to show just how powerful Ala Rubra are in comparison to normal magicians.
The only problem is that they are so powerful, and MM is so corrupt I wonder why they didn't try to overthrow the government and expose the truth themselves.
The most interesting thing though is that Kurt titled it Ala Rubra Episode 2, now Episode 1 was given by Jack which unless Kurt knew about Jack's movie it is curious to call it Episode 2 and the same saga.
This makes me think that Kurt was intrusted with this by Nagi/Arika before Kurt left Ala Rubra with instructions to show it to Negi if anything happened to them. When his intial plan to turn Negi failed he then returned to the original plan and hoped to sway Negi this way.
If this is the case there is a good chance there are additional episodes out there as we still need to cover in no particular order:-
1) Initial Rescue of young Asuna (Twilight Princess)
2) Asuna going to Mahora
3) Why was Negi brought up in the village in Wales
4) Nagi (and Arika's) subsequent dissapearance
5) Where does Eva fit in
6) What incapacitated Al
Now not all of this may be covered but I think Eishun, Al and Takamichi may all have additional episodes to show Negi, and also that events are proceeding faster than Nagi initially expected when he had the films made as in the festival arc Takamichi talks about not initially planning to tell Asuna the truth until she was an adult which may mean they initially meant to kept it out of it or that they had enough time for them to wait until then.

1) they only just ended a war 2 years earlier, they wouldn't want to start another
2) they are very powerful, but are they actually powerful enough to successfully beat down the MM military as a whole, which is likely what they would need to do
3) can they actually prove this corruption, their word alone would not be enough
4) the only real corruption seen at that time is the scapegoating of Arika

Not trying to be rude, but based on the general ratings used by most scan groups (some general guidelines for rating them can be found here (http://mangahelpers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2844) and here (http://senbonzakura.kageyoshi.net/2008/01/11/scanlation-quality-ratings/) for those curious), a "HQ" scan is a well-cleaned tankobon scan or a magazine scan done so well it looks like a tankobon (like Maximum7 does with Bleach). The current Negima 269 scan on OneManga would most likely be considered LQ by most scanlators (MQ if you're generous in your ratings), which is why it's rated LQ on MangaToshokan (http://www.mangatoshokan.com/series/mahousenseinegima) (an online reader designed specifically with scanlators in mind and with a rating system). I only mention this because it irks me a little when cleans like that are rated the same as releases done by groups such as M7 (which take 2-3 hours per page, from what I understand). :p
Anyways, I was curious about the Ep. 2 thing as well. I wasn't sure if that was just the mangaka using it or part of the actual movie/illusion as well, but it'd have interesting implications if it's part of the movie itself. Speaking of which, I'm kinda curious how Kurt has some of these recordings, particularly the ones he's not around for. It might be as Mister Random suggested and these movies were recorded either with all of Ala Rubra present (to get different perspectives) or at least Nagi/Arika. If there are indeed ways to make your memories into a film, it'd be a useful way to prove who was really behind the war, etc etc.
Personally, I hope there aren't too many future "episodes" because, while they are interesting, I'd much rather the backstory unravel though narrative involving Negi & Co. than just lots of "movies". :XD

I agree, it definitely seems like some of the others Negi hasn't told might be making some connections... now I wish I could read Japanese as well. I've been waiting for more progression involving Asuna for a while (even though the Asuna there now is Shiori). ><
I also noticed that Yue's friends were getting pretty involved with the other girls now as well. I wonder if this means we might be seeing more of them after the Magic World arc as new inductees in Negi's harem. :p

Yes, it seems likely that some of the Ariadne girls may be going to Mahora at the beginning of the new term, to keep an eye on Asuna, if not other excuse. I'm sure Emily would get along fine with Ayaka, lol.
As for the group finding out about Asuna's past, well, once Chisame gets back the secret will probably revealed. She is the person who noticed that a lot of people call Asuna 'princess'.
As for that last spoiler pic, in the lower left corner, the one who's head is coming from the floor is either the fake Eva or Fate.

Well it might be the fake Eva but i don't think its Fate because Fate's hair-style is a bit spikey & the person whose head we see has smooth hair-style. The other possible people based on the hair-style & color shade would be either Homura of Fate's group using a teleportation of some sort to inform Shiori (Fake Asuna) about something or as stated by few other people it could Sayo.

well the thing is that all fate's girls and fate himself are at Rakan's place... but it would be funny if it was the real asuna xDxD the one that got her memories back so group wou;ld be in shock of which is the real one XDXD
time will show.... but still there is a possibility that fate defeated Rakan [dont think so] and is approching Shiori to inform to return back becouse the process with asuna is almost done... [fate is a earth user so he could come out from ground after all]
anyway maybe now Shiori saw the truth and what people negis friends are..... maybe she will change sides now... becouse she sees that even negis parents tryed to save every single life durring war.... and the same she learns that negi and his parents were kinda hurt by MM.... and that negi was an orphant like her too....
so generaly Shiori might learn that negi and his group are not bad people that try to do the right thing adn not a revange of loseing parents durring war [since negi didnt had parents either]
anyway next chapter might show us who is comeing out of the floor.... it would be funny if its fate/his girl warriors to inform to return back... but Shiori likes this place and doesnt want to go xDxD [likes those girls here ^^]

In terms of Shiori it's also possible that Nodoka's ring comes into play.
Given that Shiori has a too perfect disguise (any disguise which does not let you remember who you are is in my opinion too perfect) it could be that as Asuna she wants to find out the truth and asks Nodoka to use her ring on her since it shows people true names, which reveals she is a fake.
We dont know how rare/common "artifacts" like Nodoka's ring are and if it is very rare or a one of a kind item then Fate may not have taken precautions in his "disguise magic" to counter it (if it is even possible). Additionally Fate would not have known when doing the swap that Nodoka had the ring as he only found out when the swap was taking place. Even if he did know and it is vulnerable he may have thought the risk acceptable as there would be little reason at the time for Nodoka to want to know Asuna's true name.
As for the head I am in the Sayo camp as Asuna appears to be in a group of people given that the location matches later scenes, so it would be difficult to send Asuna a private message.

Never thought about the ring, but that's a very interesting idea for how Shiori could be "found out". This seems like something Asuna might ask Nodoka to do as well (unless the Shiori personality interferes), given that Asuna remembered her true name in a dream a looong time ago but forgot it and would therefore have reason to suspect it may be different than what she knows.

Same here, I find it very curious that this has not been revealed yet if the answer is going to be something as straighforward as Arika and Asuna are sisters, cousins or aunt/niece.
This makes me wonder if there will be a big twist and have it revealed that Asuna is actually Arika's daughter and therefore Negi's sister. I could easily see the Royal Family having arranged marriages with Arika's husband dying off screen early in the war.
The more likely option is though that if the relationship is not sisters/cousins/aunt-niece that Asuna is even older and more special than we think

It seems that after this chapter there would be a break (which was expected) & the next ch would come out on 2nd of Dec (which means spoilers for it would be out by 28th of Nov).
As for this chapter it seems that, the staff which Fate is holding looks like the key which was used for the formation of the Magic World on Mars.
And it also seems like "Mage of the Beginning" or the "Life Maker" is back (my guess thats actually is Asuna).
Also talk about change of atmosphere, one moment both Fate & Raken are fighting & the other moment they are siting & chatting while drinking tea/coffee.

Yeah it might be Asuna..... becouse in previous chapters Arika said that she used the city energy to seal Asuna inside anti-magic shield..... so mostly to prevent the life-maker to re-appear duo some mind magic recovery [and so all magic are canceled on her and prevent of casting any spell on her]
anyway fate could get taht key to get passed that barrier system and re-awaken life-maker
I guess now its negis turn and his feelings that might stop asuna once for all.... by useing her memories of mahora and all.... (since there had to be a clear reason why asuna was broght to Earth... simply becouse there is noi magic so tehre is no use for her powers...)
Rakan is shitting his pants again it seems..... anyway poor asuna to end up as a tool....

I still do not see Asuna as MotB. Fate said to her "can you stand up to the weight of your sins". I do not see Fate saying something like that to his boss/creator.
It could be bad news for Rakan. He has admitted to not being in MotB's league.

I'm not really sure if that really is the mage of the beginning. Might be an illusion of some sort that was caused by the key. Because if thats real he's pretty much screwed.
I was wtf happened to go from battle mode to sipping tea and chating. If fate can do that then Rakan is pretty much screwed, time two. Poor dude I wonder if he'll die this time. But I think the reason why Fate faught with him was to test his strength after seeing Negi's fight and wanted to see how they compared. A rivalry kind of thing.

Asuna may be the new Mage of the Beginning. From what I understand, this title refers to the power it has, not necessarily to the creation of Mundus Magicus. Asuna "possesses the same godly power that created this world" said Rakan.
Oh, and about Rakan: he's SO dead!

Er, with this, I really, really don't reckon you have to think that Rakan will die, of all things, if the Lifemaker, one of only about three people to be seemingly explicitley confirmed dead, is still alive.

Very hard to know what to make of the spoilers without a translation
My impression is that after the fight continues Fate gets Jack to agree to hear him out.
They then go to elsewhere within the infinite dimension artifact they have been fighting in and share a drink.
While there Fate tells Jack something that scares him before ending on either the lifemaker appearing before Jack or Fate saying something along the lines of the lifemaker is still alive or we plan to bring him back (hence him being behind fate). The main problem I have with it being the actual lifemaker rather than an illusion or something for our benefit is that the Key staff seems to have moved from being to the side of the table out of the way to behind Fate, though of course it is possible it could be moved in one of the pages we are missing.
As for Jack dying, I dont think this will occur as he is too broken to die, but I would not be surprised if he is "neutralised" in some fashion

Now a translation and scan are out, its finally possible to make sense out of the chapter.
No real surprises in the Kurt and Negi conversation, I think the main question is what will happen when Negi says no. There is also the question of will Negi or one of the girls be able to convince Kurt that he has become what he hated (as pointed out by Haruna)
Until this chapter I had forgotten that Ku-Fei was part of the Baka Rangers, though I suspect the simple explanation was for the benefit of anyone who could not follow the twists.
I had to laugh at the Haruna-Emily interaction and the fact the girls were so engrossed with watching the film they missed that Yue and the ariadne girls join them. After Yue's little talk I am more convinced than ever that the statue and/or the events it portrays are going to tie into the final arc in a big way.
It also appears likely that Haruna is going to put the pieces together about Asuna's past (if she hasn't already), and Setsuna, Konoka and Chamo had better hope she didn't notice the looks on their faces when the Twilight Imperial Princess came up. You have to wonder why Negi told Konoka about Asuna given how she is almost as bad as Haruna at not being able to keep a secret.
Now the Al scene is curious as he seems to have relayed to Eishun and Eva the same information Negi got from Kurt, and it is also implied that he knows they will be meeting. This implies it was planned from the start. Not sure what to make of the sukuna name drop as it could mean it was related to the events just described or it could just have been Ala Rubra pulling a crazy stunt e.g. Nagi wanted to fight something strong so they decided to release Sukuna in Kyoto for him to fight.
The bigger question is, if Al (and Eishun and Takamichi to a certain extent) knew all this already, why send Negi to the Magic World at all. Unless of course it is part of a long term plan thought up by Nagi or Arika.
As for the ending between Fate and Jack, I take it to mean that Fate believes his plans have already progressed far enough along that Jack cant do anything about them

If you (re)read chapter 163, Al doesnt actually say that Nagi is in the magic world he just tells him to go there if he wants more information and that he wont get any further information from him aside that Nagi is alive.
This is later hinted at when Asuna gets Ayaka's report which states that Nagi disappeared in Instanbul

That bitter rivalry may have some chance but considering what just happened and what was explained it won't have enough time to develop.
Anywho wonder what will be negi's decision that answer will really be interesting....

Godel's plans are still not clear.. he wants Negi to join him in what? assassinating the MM senate members? over throwing the government? eradicating the entire MM country/empire? as long as Negi doesn't exactly know what Godel is up to, saying "I'll join you" is akin to signing a blank check..

As far as I remember, in a previous chapter Godel gave a list of their "enemies":
1- The Megalomesembrian council who controls the greatest military capacity in the entire magical world.
2- The Mage of the Beginning, said to have been destroyed.
3- Fate Averruncus and his allies who might be their greatest enemies for the moment.
4- The empire of demi-humans: Hellas. (An obstacle in the way)
And said Negi that they need his powers to defeat them all.

We really need the translation to make sense of the Jack/Fate chat
But looking at the raw I am now wondering if just like Fate is a construct, the Life Maker is a construct as well. One who is tied to the Giant Key Staff Fate is wielding. In which case it could well be the real life maker there, which would be very bad news for Jack and also raises the prospect of their being someone even tougher than the life maker around.
If so it would seem like part of Fate's plan was to get the artifact from the Gravekeepers Palace in order to bring the life maker back and he has suceeded in this part of it.

Hmm... I think so. I used to think like you, but now I just laugh it off. At least in Rakan's case we KNOW it's comedy. Other manga have broken characters and they're supposed to be serious.
About the spoilers, I doubt that the Life Maker is really there. It looks like Fate is simply explaining the origins of his Keyblade (Or should it be Keystaff?).
And, while I had this idea for pretty much time now, this chapter just confirmed it for me: The Life Maker is none other than the first Queen of Ostia, Negi's ancestor. The line of Vespertatia is said to have "created the world", and the leader of Kosmo Entelecheia calls herself "The Like Maker, Mage of the Beginning". Now, the problem is... WHY does she want to destroy the world?

The line of Vespertatia is said to have "created the world", and the leader of Kosmo Entelecheia calls herself "The Like Maker, Mage of the Beginning". Now, the problem is... WHY does she want to destroy the world?
well not precisly... becouse there was the creator... mostly the mage of beggining... he had a daughter anmed Amateru which was the first queen of ostia and the first royal.... her descendants of her blood line are given the "magic of anctients"
so there are possibilities that the life maker... might be "Amataru", one of her descendants (someone haveing her bloodline and that was after her useing the magic of ancients).... or it could be Asunas mother (since her ties are not known)
well it might be possible that both Negi and Asuna have the royal blood and "magic of ancients".... as their mothers had.... maybe Asunas mother was pissed that she was not chosen as the next queen but instead it was arika's descendant (negis bloodline).
still that key might be a thing that shows you your gratest fears.... like Rakan said in past he was shitting his pants when he saw life maker for the first time knowing that he wont be able to defeat that.... and poof here is life maker standing in front of him...
its possible that the current life maker is Asuna (or her mother... and like fate said asuna has a sin.... which might be standing against her mother and agreeing to seal her off...)
it would be interesting if life maker was Amataru.... she would be negis grand grand mother ^^ maybe he could reason why she wants to destroy the world that was created and so he could talk to her and stop her ^^
about ancient magic.... hah the same thing was if I remember in harry potter :P...... and simply the "magic of ancients" was "love" parent gived away its own life in order to protect the childs life "throught love"..... negi goes to people by beign nice and kind to them and they seem to like him in return too... [eva at the beggining was all kill that brat.... but now she is bored and worried if he is not around :P a super dark vampire is worried about a brat like negi ^^]
sadly no chapter next week >__<

And WOW, whats with this chapter. Its really interesting & confusing at the same moment. Raken was totally played with by Fate & Raken didn't have a single idea about it.
Also i have a question, is the Fate we see talking with Raken is the same one he was fighting moments ago or is it a new one created when Raken defeated the third 'Fate'.
Also the talk about the '40 years' thing & Raken's debut as a prizefighter is a bit odd to me. Could it be that the Magic World has been recreated 40 years ago because of the collapse of the previous artifical alternate plane. Or could it be that the Magic World itself was created 40 years ago.

it seems that the Life Maker naturally inspires fear in the inhabitants of MW and controls them like puppets (they're his/her creation after all), I'm wondering if this is what happened to Zect.. maybe Nagi was able to go against him because he's from the Old World..
it'll be interesting to see what it'll be like for Negi.. me thinks Godel has bigger things to worry about if the Life Maker really is back, just look at the expression on Rakan's face for crying out loud!!

Have to agree with you about it being confusing, looking at the translation and the raw it appears the Key-Staff activates on Page 6 and everything after that is not really happening.
The 40 year old thing from the translation implies to me that whats happening is an advanced form of the technique Rakan used on the Fate Girls to discover their past, but in which Fate has complete control and modifies the world at his whim
As for Fate's goal with Jack, it seems like he wants to turn Jack to their side in some way, either by taking his power for themselves, and their is even a possibility that Fate wants to turn Jack into a new Life maker

If the Mage of The Beginning (somehow still alive through his staff?) or Fate (following his programming) want to rewrite the magic world, might this be the catastrophe Chao was trying to prevent by revealing the existence of magic users to Earth's population? Allowing them time to build diplomatic protocol and migrate peacefully so to speak, rather than a defacto invasion by fleeing and appearing all at once, and following constant war between science and magic?
Then again, Chao was born on the parallel Mars, at least 25-30 years in the future, so an immediate destruction seems very unlikely. Maybe she was born to revolutionary forces the new version, which turned into a despotic hellhole under the MOTB's rule? A bit of a puzzle.
Also, did anyone else get the impression that something very odd was up with that very "Worthless insects! None of them are worth saving!" weary nihilism speech the 2000 years old Eternal Daylight Walker that trained the Thousand Master made before perishing, and then how Nagi wanted to correct his comrades' assumption that he simply died in the fight, but was stopped by Albireo Imma? Fate doesn't appear to lie at all, at least from his own viewpoint. That makes one of his statements from over a year ago (real time) more intriguing: He told Tsukiyomi just before he summoned his girls that the whole purpose of their enterprise was to "save the world." Since he's trying to destroy the magic world, the world he must be trying to save must be the real world. That is, assuming he was telling the truth--and there doesn't seem to be any reason for him to lie to Tsukiyomi, who doesn't care about why she's fighting, only that she can fight.
I think the way this is all is going to end is that Fate will cut the strings to his puppetmaster(s) and change sides.
Mister Random
November 18, 2009, 04:21 AM
I actually think the world he is trying to save is the magic world, unfortunately the life makers way of saving it is to recreate it which has the "side-effect" of killing everyone who is living there at that time

Perhaps the Magic World is supported by draining mana from the real world--there could be bad consequences in the long run. Apparently the magic world was created as a refuge for magic-users and magic-dependent beings from persecution in the real world. The same theme underlies Sugar Sugar Rune, and a very similar theme underlies the much older Piers Anthony Adept series where there is a potentially fatal imbalance between the magical world of Phaze and the high-tech world of Proton.
Of course, again as in Rune, the creator of the world might have gone nuts. Madness is equally appropriate for both Mages and Scientists. Perhaps the Life Maker is really in need of is a really good therapist...
And speaking of references which may be obscure to you, James P. Hogan wrote a sci-fi novel called Code of the Life Maker. It's about a robot civilization that looks on humans as gods.

Okay, want my opinion? Akamatsu's had far too much fun making Rakan a war machine, and now he's just obscenely overpowered and capable of killing Fate (were it not for his illusion) without even breaking a sweat. I sincerely hope Fate either returns the favour or the Lifemaker kicks his ass, because this is getting ridiculous.

Just say you don't like him. =)
His purpose on the manga is to show he's broken, on other level. He's a monster, just like Nagi. I suppose you don't like Nagi too, huh?
And Fate isn't stronger than Rakan, and probably never will.

At least Nagi (who I did like) wasn't around for too long, didn't properly kill the Lifemaker (if the one here is actual), and didn't mop the floor with the current final boss when the actual main protagonist, even with training and Erebea, still has trouble landing a hit on him. In fact, I believe Fate and Nagi fought to a draw, not a curbstomp.
And being broken is the problem- Nagi had the courtesy to up and vanish, and, to compensate, Akamatsu's made Rakan into the most horribly broken character this series has. Why did he even bother training Negi when he could have gotten up off his keester any day of the week and handed Fate's ass to him on a silver platter?

When if comes to rakan no one says better then Chisame http://www.onemanga.com/Mahou_Sensei_Negima!/248/11/
Rakan's purpose was to be that "Wall" that cannot be surpassed. negi was suppose to face this wall and try and break through it, to reach the level of his father. Now we dont know if negi could wipe the floor with fate or not in his current state. they have not had a chance to fight since the match with rakan. Also if you remember this is the third fate. and rakan him self says that this one is diffrent.http://www.onemanga.com/Mahou_Sensei_Negima!/260/08/ maybe this could also effect his power level.
now the problem with rakan is http://www.onemanga.com/Mahou_Sensei_Negima!/215/06/ he just fights when he wants to. also he figured with the life maker out of the way who was accually a threat. he did see fate as a threat so why go after him? he does not fight for justice. or if some one is doing somthing wrong. he fights because he wants to. Nagi on the other hand went looking for trouble, and looked for fights.
Also http://www.onemanga.com/Mahou_Sensei_Negima!/232/14/ nagi kicked the shit out of fate...
But if your looking for when rakan lost it.http://www.onemanga.com/Mahou_Sensei_Negima!/233/04/ life maker took out both his arms.

Well according to cnet's translation (which was out few moments ago) it seems that Fate describes Raken's power as being either "Real" or merely a "Bug".
The word "Bug" here to me relates to the 'Bug' we have in computer software programming which means an 'error' (in simplest form of explaining, not technical).
So does that mean that Raken's strength wasn't supposed to be how it is right now & that strength is merely a flaw in his creation. (i said 'creation' because according to 'Fate', many people including Raken were created by the 'Puppet Master' a.k.a the 'Life Maker').

Well, fighting because he wants to and being an apparent system error are great and all, but the point still stands- he's horrendously broken, and I hope that either Fate or the Lifemaker does something to remove him from the series.
And Nagi at least looked banged up there. Rakan got an apparently harmless blade through the arm and a bleeding hand in terms of outstanding injuries, it's ridiculous.

Not really as the sentence seems to be which like this,
Fate: You may have called me a doll, a mere puppet of my master, but in fact... // ...you too are as much a puppet as I. Sad though it may be.
Fate: A puppet cannot defy the puppetmaster
The "puppet master" title just seems to be sort of an implication to Life Maker's power & that he created the Magic World & mejority of its population, thats all. I don't think this has any connection to Eva in any way.

I also dislike Rakan quite a bit.. actually I dislike all overpowered characters who love to gloat about how overpowered they are and Rakan fits the bill like no one else..
I always enjoy it when he and his types get a humbling experience that shows them how the highest tier of the pyramid is not necessarily the one they're standing on :p:eyeroll

November 21, 2009, 03:11 PM
lol didn't know there were Rakan haters. Rakan is cool in my book and he has the right to gloat of being overpowered simply cuz he CAN. Overpowered characters I don't mind at all and as far as Rakan goes he is just pure fun I hope he does not get taken out this early. Negi had to be trained. fact he got pwned by Goedel (dont even use the recent chapters where negi went all darkness that doesnt count and goedel wasn't even fighting back and he was so being played by Goedel.)shows he is still in need of it. If his goal is to search for his dad then whatever force or circumstance that had Nagi to disappear obviously calls for a level where Rakan and Nagi are at to pull off such a disappearance and at this moment Negi is not up to scratch (yet.)
Rakan may have graduated negi (that was lol) but sadly is negi is still not there yet. Worse being that Rakan getting done in by what fate pulled off means Negi could still be not within reach of Fate's unknown level. Maybe if he teams up with Goedel (if it happens such a circumstance) and takes on Fate then he can win but on his own he would be on level but a win would be very hard fought and seeing that fate has a trick or two makes negi's win all the more unlikely. Negi still needs more training or some kind of ultimate finisher. Even after all what happened so far I don't think Negi can take on Fate. Heck if Rakan gets taken down by Fate then Negi is in REAL trouble. Especially since Fate still has not only Ana but Asuna in holding and considering hes there fighting with Rakan whatever his business with Asuna, breakin her memory loss charm has been done and dusted god knows what asuna is thinking or doing now.
Rakan with that look on his face on the latest chapter This page (http://www.onemanga.com/Mahou_Sensei_Negima!/271/15/) does NOT bode well since he is supposed to be overpowered. If he goes down here then Negi best do well to avoid a fight with Fate (for the moment), and just think on getting his students back home before continuing on (though Asuna is a question mark after all the memories return how will she be? Hell who will break it to Negi and Co. that the asuna they have now is a fake??? come on its dragged on long enough already.)
Hope negi becomes overpowered soon or else he won't be expecting an easy fight with Fate and this time Eva nor Rakan won't be able to bail him out this time..
NyxOne
November 21, 2009, 04:58 PM
And we get fun out of fights not being easy. We, conversely, do not when the resident overdone powerhouse goes around beating the shit out of the current big bad with pathetic ease thus questioning why he even had to train Negi when he could have saved the magical world single-handedly. He could have just sent Negi and his pals to the gateport through force, sent them back home, and then kicked Fate's ass to be home in time for dinner. Or vice versa. It's ridiculous.
And there's 'pure fun' and taking that 'fun' too far.

Speaking of bugs...
Hasn't anyone else here else read Ken Akamatsu's first series? It was a modern Pygmalion story about a high school kid who creates AI programs that come to life. He did that series while he was learning computer programming, so programming metaphors come naturally to him. Plus, Akamatsu has had 20+ years of Aa! Megami-sama! to steal from, and that series from day one was built on the theme of our world being a program run on Heaven's computer system.

There's no doubt in my mind that A.I. Love You's origins are very similar to Ah! My Goddess. By the time the series ended though, it was already becoming more like what Love Hina would become in some aspects (Sati springs to mind as becoming more like Naru than Belldandy).
Today, I think that Akamatsu-sensei may be influenced by all kinds of things (and what writers aren't?) but has his own, unique story.
oldgringo2001
November 27, 2009, 02:23 AM
Akamatsu freely admits that he borrows characteristics from his earlier series for characters in his newer ones. I used to have a great picture done by the sensei himself showing characters from AI Love You (or AI Ga Tomaranai) with characters from Love, Hina. Forty-chan became Kaolla Su, who split into three parts to become Chao, Satomi, and Ku Fei.
But in one other crucial aspect, the later series have regressed: hentai content! In AI, for instance, the hero spends a lot of time playing hentai games--pretty obviously, Saati was inspired by that--and during a limbo contest at the beach he develops a very visible erection. Cindy McDougall laments to herself, "He pitched his tent for Saati, but not for me."
The same creeping Disneyfication has affected Ah! Megami-sama over its long run. If you look at the early stories, it was fairly raunchy. But now it's been over a decade since Keiichi and Belldandy's last kiss.

and it seems that Rakan noticed that Asuna might be captured... so here after the fight he might tell that to negi... that this asuna there is a fake...
I wonder what Negi will do with Shuri after blowing up the cover.... well I guess he will just demand answer where the real Asuna is... and wont hurt her... well she might be in Asunas skin but she could have noticed how good people negi and the rest are.... and how real friends look like... it would be funny if negi patted her on the head kindly which would make her cry ect.
well she might not realize that they want to destroy the world... and that they are from this world as well... not mention that fate send many other children to schools so they will die too... maybe she will open her eyes and join negis pack after that (well she saw the movie of negis parents too... and how they were fighting for each single life by risking their own)
anyway it seems that if negi would follow the path with godel than it could result on earth destroying (dont know if that is mars... magic world... or earth)... rakan useing artifact... some magic armor (wonder where the helmet is :P )
but its hard to tell if this mage of beggining is real Asuna... or its a spirit sealed in asunas body [that had been sealed by nagi nad arika]... since asuna mentioned in past past chapters that she somehow feels empty.... and this could mean that its becouse of this mage... who knows ^^ (asuna could just be used to nulify the seal on some object like mage of begginig was sealed in old ostia ruins... and thats why he brought asuna there...)
many questions but no answers so far.... next chapter will be like Rakan vs Fate + MoB (or its past image)... and Negi vs Godel heh he might be supprised on negis avoiding his attacks :P

Megalosembria is not the only nation on the magical world with a majority population of "normal" humans. So much for Godel's "humanitarianism."
If any of you out there know anything about the original Battlestar Galactica series, Kurt Godel seems to be the Baltar character: the treacherous politician who makes a deal with the enemy providing that his "own" people will be spared. Like Baltar, Godel will, of course, be double-crossed himself.
Asuna being the last boss probably isn't right unless Asuna is possessed by the Life Maker. I'm afraid the plot gimmick might be more-or-less the same as in the end of the first Sailor Moon series: a brainwashed/mind-controlled Asuna is used as a last bodyguard for the last boss.
Another idea Akamatsu might steal from Fujishima is having Negi himself getting possessed by the Life Maker. Maybe the life maker can only possess direct descendents--and Negi, being the son of an Ostian imperial princess, is a direct descendent.
What Chao might have had in mind was making the "real" world population accept magic as a first step to accepting the immigration of refugees from the Magic World. It would be a very appropriate goal for a descendant of Arika, who worked to save everyone she could.
Who's to say Chao had the wrong idea? It could be that there really is no way to save the people of the Magic World except by bringing them to the "real" world. The result might look something like the Gods-next-door future as depicted in Hyper Police.

so guys, when do you think the future changes?
back in chao's timeline, did negi go to mundus magicus? did he meet and join kurt-san, without the knowledge of the world being on the brink of destruction and thus kurt having his plan completed?
or was it that negi never went to mundus and learned about the destruction of the magic world at mahora?
if the future changes, then chao would have no reason to go back in the past to 'change' things, which would result in negi not knowing about the magic world and preventing it from blowing up, making a paradox...
or maybe there'll be a different trajedy.
oh and i thought back then chao said the trajedy wasn't related to the deaths of thousands, millions of people?

nothing Chao did, did directly or indirectly mean that Negi went to Mundus Magicus ... of cause, he met Imma there and he was the one getting Negi to go there, but she clearly saw him as a spanner in the works, so i wouldn't guess that that was intented ...
If Negi hadn't ran into Chao he wouldn't have had the infomation which here in this chapter made him abandon Kurt at the striped line. So he would have forcefully have been made to help Kurt, though some kind of geas

Well, even with his usual 4 ch + 1 break, at least Negima is weekly with usually 18 pages each chapter. Monthly manga, even if they have a bit more pages a chapter, tend to release much less pages a year. And if they're an worse case like once every two months... argh Nanoha Force...

This is because in this chapter we see Negi going Naruto style (which is very similar too the Pain's fight) & recently in Naruto, the Raikage used the "Raiton Armor" which is very similar to Negi's "Raiten Taisou" & "Raiten Taisou 2".

Relax. The text on the last page doesn't say anything about another break.
Nodoka is asking over the last two pages (using her mind-reading book) for Godel to reveal why he won't save everyone. Her final words are "Tell us the final secret of the end of this world." And, of course, we must wait for the next chapter (at least) to hear the answer.
I can't make out all the characters in what Chisame's mice are saying on page 13 in spite of the large-format raw. Sometimes I wonder if Akamatsu-sensei is making a little money on the side from the Japanese Optomotrists Association. He has to be one of the major causes of eyestrain...

And it wouldn't since the magazine is a double issue. scanlation is out on onemanga.
by the way guys, remember in chapter 260, pg17(just reread), we see an unidentified couple in one frame, with kurt saying all the pieces of the puzzle are assembled.
my guess is that the guy is now comfirmed to be takahata. he has the same white tuxedo... as for the woman, could it be that one that brought negi on mars?

@forsakenlight7, i think you complicate things too much. :amuse
I like the background characters, it's not some isolated place like in some series.
Chiu-tama and the digital mice crack the Government security systems, and Nodoka got the last answer. Weak isn't equal useless. If Chisame is 1 power unit and a cat is half, how much Nodoka? I guess 0.93 Chisame. But somehow for Kazumi i give 1.1 Chisame. :p

Really liked this chapter with everyone else showing up to help. It gave a feeling unlike so many other stories where this sort of a save would be pulled out of thin air that this was planned from the start which was nice.
@nassass
I'd expect Nodoka to rank higher than Chisame, while she hasn't shown any offensive abilities she was with the adventuring group for a while and was able to react to the sound blasts in the chase sequence. Also IIRC she was part of the group learning magic before the trip.

Oh, i forgot she learn magic. But i don't know it has effect her combat abilities.
And the 1 chisame unit is probably impress after Chisame's punch on dark Negi's face. :P

Given how quickly Negi succombed to the Magia Erebia "side-effects" in this chapter does anyone else feel that things are being set up so that he does not play a major role in the return to Mahora, but instead it is class 3A with perhaps a little help from the friends they picked up who take part in any future battles before their return

Well we got the whole chapter as the spoilers, that a surprise.
And also it mainly focuses on the group outside, which is a change as well from the last few chapters.
Well now they have left us in a really good cliff-hangar and we would have to wait, if i am right for more than a one week for the next chapter as it seems that the last page contains one of those usual break messages given by Ken (possibly the next earlier release might be on 13th Jan meaning spoilers between 6th to 9th Jan, which is my guess though) .
As for the chapter, form the looks of the spoilers, the seventh page contains Setsuna's new artifact (the one which she got with the pactio made with Konoka) which looks like a magical sword.
Also the way's Kaede uses her artifact is truly amazing. And as "ANB" mentioned, Sayo is using a Gun but not an ordinary gun to boot but a "Magically Powered Gatling Gun".

I think this is how Fake-chan is uncovered cuz real Asuna would make those summoned thingies disappear in a moment ;))

I don't think that it would be an accidental revelation at this point of the story which would expose the Fake Asuna to the group.
Because after so many thing happening till now from the moment Asuna was switched, my guess would be that either Natsume or Anya would be the one to reveal the truth about the Fake Asuna unless the fake one goes a bit to emotional towards Negi.

Epic spoilers. I love high-level magical battles, and it seems one's is underway... But whar really got me was Setsun's Artifact. For some reason, it reminds me of those Juraian Light Sabers, from Tenchi Muyo.
Kaede, badass as ever.
And last, but not least...
Where the hell did Sayo pull that gun? O.o

It looks like a deck/swivel gun mounted to Haruna's ship.
