Bleach Episode 246
This episode contains major spoilers. If you have not seen the episode yet, read at your own risk.
The episode begins with Byakuya and Muramasa encountering Yamamoto trapped in the barrier. Muramasa explains that the barrier is kept up by three of the strongest zanpakuto spirits of captain level- Katen Kyokatsu, Sogyo no Kotowari, and Minazuki. Byakuya and Yamamoto stare at each other. Yamamoto releases his zanpakuto and the flames come rushing out. However, only a few of them actually escape the barrier, enough to nick Byakuya. The zanpakuto spirits just tell Byakuya to be careful as their own barrier is not perfect.
Ichigo remembers the flashback where Byakuya escaped after Konjiki Ashisogi Jizou attacked the group previously. Senbonzakura, who has also fought Ichigo, escaped as well. Ichigo was caught in the poison gas. At the Kuchiki manor, Ichigo is with Yoruichi, Kenpachi, Yachiru, Kyoraku, and Ukitake. They discuss their plans about saving the Head Captain. Yoruichi tells them that they just have to go into the hideout themselves. Kenpachi is estatic over the types of enemies that he might fight while there.
Haineko and Tobiume are bored with nothing to do in the cave, while complaining. A fight almost breaks out between the two of them. Tenken and Gonryomaru are by their side, but just do nothing as well. They suddenly sense some sort of enemy while questioning who it is. The other zanpakuto spirits sense the enemies approaching them as well. Muramasa just stares at Yamamoto, who only leaks out a part of his flame-like reiatsu.
Kenpachi and Yachiru walking in the dark cave with no sense of direction. Ichigo and Yoruichi are using Flash Step to get there while communicating with one another. They talk about how Byakuya did not kill Rukia or Renji, left them alive with little injuries. They also discuss Byakuya's reasons of fighting. Ichigo wonders if Byakuya is doing this to save the Head Captain. Yoruichi just blantly answers that she does not know either. Ichigo is distracted and falls from the rock into the water. Yoruichi tells Ichigo to stop fooling around.
Suddenly, a bell appears and constricts Yoruichi. She is attacked by Haineko and Tobiume. They are amazed that the former Omnitskudo leader was that careless. Suddenly, Yoruichi vanishes, having used the Omnitskudo secret technique #3- Black Cicada. She uses her strength to push Haineko back towards a rock while choking Tobiume. Yoruichi tells Ichigo to go on ahead.
Ukitake and Kyoraku are near some stone complex inside the cave. They encounter their own zanpakuto spirits. Sogyo no Kotowaris are acting childish around Ukitake, trying to play a game with him. Ukitake just only looks with a pale expression on his face as they finally get off him. They summon two fan-like weapons with two fish on them (reference to their name). The two fans begin to attack Ukitake. He just only watches and tries to react.
Kyoraku wonders if this means that Katen Kyokatsu is his zanpakuto. Katen and Kyoraku discuss things with one another. Suddenly, another zanpakuto spirit appears behind Kyoraku. It has almost the same appearance as Katen Kyokatsu except with a teenage appearance, leaving Kyoraku to believe that it must be the spirit of the second sword.
Kenpachi breaks through the rocks in the cave with Yachiru. They soon discover Tenken and Gonryomaru. Kenpachi plans to fight them both. Ichigo soon encounters Minazuki, whom just lures Ichigo back and escapes with Flash Step. Kazeshini appears in the section of the cave Ichigo enters and attacks him. Ichigo is constricted by the chains. Ichigo then uses Bankai along with Getsuga Tensho. Kazeshini dies and turns back to chain. Ichigo apologizes before heading off into the innards of the cave.
Ichigo encounters Muramasa and Yamamoto within the barrier. He tries to break the barrier but flames just spout out. Ichigo pulls out his Bankai sword and resolves to break the barrier and free Yamamoto.
Preview- This shows the montage of fights taking place in the cave. Nothing else to explain, really. Ichigo fights Muramasa.
Omake- Soifon is walking in the halls and encounters Suzumebachi. They talk about ways for Yoruichi to love her. Soifon, blushing, begins to choke Suzumebachi accidentally while calling out Yoruichi's name.

Everything seems to pace itself towards the final fight. They are at Muramasa's hideout for crying out loud. There are only nine zanpakuto spirits left. If it's going to be at least 1 spirit defeated/killed per episode, it certainly won't last long.

Interesting episode. It's funny how in this arc the top 4 zankapkuto's are convienentily taken out of action, cause manga didn't reveal much about them yet (like Bankai, more abilities, etc)..

And Kenpachi's zanpaktuo = do not even bother with, cause he doesn't have a name..

This what makes this arc = joke, cause it has so many limitations, due to the manga

Edit: Come to think of it. Given Katen Kyokotsu's ability shouldn't Ukitake's spirit be his.

Ryujin Jakka decided not to betray Yamamoto, so unless Muramasa's hypnosis/instinct release becomes inexpicably more powerful, he won't snare the zanpakuto spirit under his control.
The episode title for 248 suggests that something like this could be possible.

Well, i just notice that shunsui second zanpakutou spirit remind me about his power in manga (the game he's playing with starrk) the shadows one.. Really interesting!!

Very nice episode. The fact that Ukitake's Zanpakuto's are children reminds me of him refusing to fight Lil in FKT. Do you think he will be able to fight these children? Or does everyone think he has already been defeated?

On another note, does anyone think we will get to see Kyoraku's shikai abilities here in the anime before we see them in the manga? I think we will. For the simple fact that there's no way his zanpakuto will beat him without playing the games ^_~

Was that Unohana's zanpakuto that was faster than Ichigo and leading him towards Yamaji? that could be an interesting fight considering we dont know minazuki's skills besides turning into a manta ray and healing people with it's puke...

Is it just me or is there something fishy about this filler? I was under the impression that for a Shinigami to attain Bankai (I'm not sure about Shikai) they would have to have subdued their materialised Zan. So why is it that even the captains can't immediately recognise their Zans or are completely shocked to see what their Zans look like (excepting Hitsu and Kyouraku, ofcourse)? Highly suspect!

Because every single design for this filler arc is non canon and, hence, one that their wielders wouldn't recognize (as opposed to, say, Zabimaru's actual Nue form), perhaps?

If by non-canon you mean wasn't shown in the manga, that'd be correct, besides for Zangetsu. However, if by non-canon, you mean non-Kubo drawn, that's incorrect, because Kubo gave the animators the design for each and every zanpakutou.

Yeah, i agree with that. IMO, is not really diff between canon and non-canon design, i don't know exactly but so far there's no big diff. Actually, it's can confuse people who don't read manga if there's have big diff in design/style. Just my thought....

Clearly there is a bigger plot getting ready to unfold. I'm thinking turning everyone's swords rogue was just a distraction tactic while Mura accomplishes something much worse.

Dude i have learned from Bleach that you should never read too much into the episode tiitles..They are always a bit misleading...They will say Ichigo vs Ukitake, and then during the episode they may fight for like a minute and then the fight will end...So dont pay them too much mind, but i agree..Muramasa said that Byakuya was completing a certain objective, so wemay get to see the real reason behind the Zanpaktou rebellion soon..Depends on how long this Arc is though...I heard that it is 50 eps :|....I also heard it is 26 eps, so idk..

There's no confirmation of Minazuki's gender at this point.
Hopefully Minazuki doesn't just swallow people like it did back in Shikai form.

Very true. I think they could have just did background stories for the Espada filler instead of this one and put this one later.

That would have been a good idea to do backstories for Harribel, Stark, and Barragan...nice idea. But not now though because all of the backstories give away everything.

True. On the other hand, they might be not very relevant when the time comes for another filler though.

PS: And Ulquiorra didn't get any backstory at all. For one of the main antagonists in the last arcs, that is strange and doesn't do him justice IMO. Same goes for Harribel. At least Starkk and Barrigan got a piece of backstory.

The last batch of canon episodes really proved that 20-something chapters can be covered in 12 episodes (scratch that- with those stupid recaps, I'd say 9-10).
