fail list is fail, you have Howl's Moving Castle but not Princess Mononoke? Dragon Ball Z should be the same as Dragon Ball, and LOL Yugioh/Pokemon.

I say GitS/Monster, your list is waaaaaay too short

If you guys have disagreements, argue your opinions instead of bashing series and views.

Princess Mononoke is better than Howl's Moving Castle ^^ lol

I have an obsession with Samurai Champloo and it gets my vote for best.

Can't say for all time since there's a couple listed that I haven't watched. But out of the ones I've seen I'd pick 5 Centimeters Per Second. Honorable mention to NGE even though it's not 'da best anime eva!!!', it's just that I cannot remember having being more obsessed with any other series.

yea akira was Awesome, with a capital A ,
any way but in my op Grave of the Fireflies is the best anime movie .
the only anime series that shook me like Gotf was 'Now and Then, Here and There'

Other - Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei (all seasons). Bakemonogatari and a Place Promised in Our Early Days are close behind. How could nothing by Shinkai, Satoshi Kon, Mamoru Hosoda be on this list? Hoshi no Koe, Place Promised, 5CM per Second, Perfect Blue, Tokyo Godfathers, Paprika, and Toki wo Kakeru Shoujo have all been left off. And nothing by SHAFT or BONES; SZS, Bake, PaniPoni, both seasons of the ef franchise, Eureka 7 and FMA (both seasons). Finally: what about Gundam, Macross, Neon Genesis? Just asking :)

kaiten senpai did you see Gotf and 'Now and then Here and there'?
I have not, no.
Edit: oops gotf=Grave of the fireflies, any way try these they are a masterpiece

I've watched both Gotf and Now and Then, Here and There. The movie is just heartbreaking and one of the best anime movies that reflect what war does to children. Now and Then is a series that fells like it's kicking you when your down, and doesn't stop. It also has some tough moments to watch. I really like the main character, he has that fighting spirit. Both are classics and will remain that way.

I'd pick Rurouni Kenshin... at least up to the end of the Shishio arc. I watched the whole thing on old fansubed video tapes years before it came out in on dvd in english. They were like 3rd generation copies.... and it really showed. The show was still awesome though.

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann. You can see from the fast paced, over the top and fluid animation that the animators were very dedicated to make this 27 episodes tv series.

Guren Lagann is definitely a classic, no argument. I marathoned the whole series on DVD's a few months ago, my second time watching, and was blown away all over again. Kamina and Simon are anime characters for the ages.

unlike most of the good animes Gurren Lagann came up with a satisfactory ending, that counts a lot, i liked when simon went away as a hermit .

Well, i voted for Cowboy Bebop because it was so outstanding as far as anime goes. I think it is hard for Watanabi to ever fail at being awesome. Spike was a great character, and the supporting characters complimented him well. The action and music were superb even by today's standards and the animation was consistently gorgeous, and was especially excellent in the movie. I still wish that somehow Spike could return and continue his adventure, but alas, it may be too much to hope for.

Though, I was tempted to put DBZ just because it was probably the one show that blew up anime in America, and I was a pretty hard core Z-tard back in the day, regardless of it's ridiculousness, it kept fans hooked until the end (I'm still trying to forget that GT even happened though...never even finished the series. LOL)

Spirited away was absolutely gorgeous, and I treasure that movie, but all in all, it was just a short film in comparison to a long series, so I wouldn't say it was the greatest anime of all time just because it lacks length, so it's hard to get attached to.

It's the same with any movie in my opinion. Movies just don't have the epic qualities that series have. Akira, I would wager was far more influential of a film, and it was also fantastic like Spirited Away, but no matter what, the stories, though extremely influential, are sort of detached from ever gaining their own fandom, they just sort of float above everything else, in their own kind of category.

Unoriginal as it may sound, the movies/franchises I've been most impressed with have been:

- Koukaku Kidoutai: Stand Alone Complex (anime series and films)
I'm not classy enough to prefer GitS over GitS:SAC, sadly. *shrugs*

- Shin Seiki Evangelion (tv series and early films)
Unoriginal... I know. But it really impressed me, it did!

- The Skycrawlers (film)
I can never get tired of that movie. Just spending half a minute watching a character light up a smoke and all, or fold a newspaper... I don't really know why, but I never get tired of it.

- Kara no Kyoukai ~The Garden of Sinners~ (film series)
Perfect mix of arthouse and mainstream, I'd say. Bringing the macabre and the obscure to a greater audience, with great animation in especially the fifth and seventh movies. Also one of those rare series that left me in a very happy state after ending.

- Akira (film)
TETSUOOOOOO~! KANEDAAAAAAA~!! TETSUOOOOO~!!!! *cough* Classic.

Haven't really heard anything mentioned in this thread that I disliked though. Hmm. A good breeding ground for suggested films and series when I have some free time again, hmm. =)

For me, the anime of all time most memorable was the Genesis Climber Mospeada, why? because it is the first anime I watched on TV and managed to gather all the series after 12 years of searching. ADV release its DVD version in 2003. Thanks for the anime fansubs : Gray Phantom and Anime Sky Scrapper.

Some other anime which deserve mentioning
From Isao Takahata (Grave of the firefly) there is also my neighbours the Yamada (on a quite different style :-).
And I also liked Tekkon kinkurīto

I don't know, it might be too soon to say something like this since I haven't seen it all, but in my humble opinion Eden of the East (Higashi no Eden) is one of the greatest anime of all time. I kept seeing it mentioned but never watched it until like a week ago and I was completely absorbed in it until it was over.

The whole thing was enthralling. I loved it and am foaming at the mouth for the movies. The action is excellent: exciting and suspenseful but not too heavy, the characterizations are excellent (I <3 Akira muchly) and the plot is very original (I can't really compare it to anything I've ever seen). The animation is gorgeous and ranks up with some of the best I have seen (like Cowboy Bebop, Samurai 7, Samurai Champloo, FLCL, etc...). Seeing how good the series was makes me wonder how much the movies will blow me away. I have faith that I will not be let down and have high expectations.

It's just...unquestionably a 10.

...what?
I'm just going to say i disagree completely.

as far as best anime of all time, even though i don't really understand what you mean by best, i would say dragon ball mainly for its longevity. i think dragon ball is a great show for a kid to watch when he or she is growing up, and it's still huge today. although i think DBZ was horrible and that's the one that's loved today ;p

and i guess i should say that i only recently watched the db/dbz/dbgt animes so my opinion on this is rather new. at least i'm not giving an opinion based on a childhood love for an anime

DBZ was good when I was kid. TTGL made me feel like a kid again, its that good

TTGL was good until kamina died. after that, it was downhill for me. simon became emo and uninteresting and the battles seemed like they were just trying to one up the previous one. which kind of reminds me of what DBZ did ;o

I voted for Cowboy Bebop. It's been a while, but i can still remember how absolutely riveted i was to that show the first time i saw it.

Not far behind are Eureka Seven, Samurai Champloo, and Gurren Lagann; all of which both of which are absolutely outstanding.

Why evangelion isn´t in the list? It's a classic and complete anime

but all we know that DBZ was amazing in 20th century, but right now for me the best anime was code geass and elfen lied.
