Chapter 575: Silent Anger
Pics and review are based on the mangastream version.
Last week was a very emotional chapter. It had the first death in One Piece, and it was a person that was very important to many people, not the least of all the main character. Ace was one of my favorites too, though I admit it was more because of his power than anything about his personality. Fire is second only to Wind and tied with Sand on the list of Logias I'd most like to have. This chapter's title suggests that one of the characters is going to go on a wordless rampage. My money's on Whitebeard or Luffy.
Continuing where we left off last time, Luffy is totally out of it like a dead lightbulb. As Ace still lays dead with a smile on his face, Luffy remembers the time when they first became brothers and just shuts down. Marco, Whitebeard, and Jinbei are crying, and at least one of the Division Commanders is in denial. The reporters back in Sabondy are shocked too. The execution was a success, though not in the way that they had been expecting.
Iva takes quick notice of Luffy's mental state, but Jinbei notices something even scarier that makes his eyes bug out in surprise. Akainu is moving to attack the defenseless Luffy!
Love or hate the guy (I think everyone hates him by now), the man is thorough. He knows how to get the job done, and doesn't stop for anything. He's the kind of guy that, bastard though he is, you'd want on your side.
He's pretty serious on this attack though. Before, he'd only changed part of his body at a time into magma, except when he needed to defend against some big attacks. Now he's almost totally transformed, leaving only his head normal. He has become a living volcano, the most powerful and destructive of all natural disasters. He means business.
Side note: Take a close look at the left side of that pic and it looks like the guy's sword is melting in his hand.
Just in the nick of time though, Marco the Phoenix jumps in between them to protect Luffy. He yells at Jinbei to grab Luffy and haul ass out of there. Jinbei doesn't need to be told twice, and starts running. Hell, knowing the kind of guy Jinbei is, he probably didn't even need to be told once. As Luffy is Ace's precious brother, and one of the things that gave him a reason to live, the Whitebeard Pirates will protect him at all cost just as they would protect Ace himself.
Akainu remains determined, and reiterates yet again that he will not let Luffy escape alive. Just as he says that though, someone yells at him to watch out. It seems that a monster has snuck up behind him. Without so much as a word of warning or any other useless foreplay, The old man mercilessly sucker punches Akainu right in the back of the head and slams him into the ground with brutal force, and makes him cough up some blood. The old man is pissed. Looks like this is where the chapter title is for.
Side note: Some people think that this attack is not one of Whitebeard's Gura Gura powers, but in fact a Haki based attack. After this attack, I'm starting to believe that idea more and more. We've already seen one Gura Gura attack, the one that cracks the air and causes shockwaves, hit an Admiral and basically do nothing. It broke him and his attack apart, but he was able to reform with ease with no permanent injury either.
As expected of one of Marine HQ's Admirals, the Marine's greatest battle force, even after taking a direct hit from a devastating attack, he's not down for the count yet. He gets up and launches his 3rd named technique, Meigou (Dark Dog). To be honest, it doesn't look all that more impressive than just a simple straight punch. Compared to how awesome the Diafunka, Ryuusei Kazan, and the unnamed dog shaped magma wave that came before were, this attack is a bit lame.
But even though it is rather modest looking, the results are very impressive.

Though he doesn't land a direct hit, Akainu manages to burn off the left side of Whitebeard's head! Whitebeard remains silent, taking this hit without a single grunt of pain.
It's basically official now. Whitebeard is even more bad ass than the spawn of Kenpachi (Bleach) and Rakan (Mahou Sensei Negima), if modern science could somehow discover a way of making a child of two men from entirely different manga series. He is the Tank to end all Tanks.
With silent anger so powerful that it almost oozes out of the page (or, in this case, the computer screen), Whitebeard winds up and smacks Akainu with the back-hand bitch-slap of his life. The air around Akainu cracks from the hit, showing that he just took a quake from Whitebeard at point blank range.
Just like with Giant John previously, the quake travels right through Akainu's body and cracks apart the plaza and the HQ building even further. A couple Marines observe that the building is about to collapse. I, on the other hand, am surprised that the damn thing is still standing with all the abuse that it's taken.
With those two powerful attacks, Akainu has effectively had the shit beat out of him, and with a final curse in Whitebeard's direction falls down a giant crack in the ground.
The next few panels are pretty confusing. Marines falling into the ocean, pirates helping other pirates up from a cliff, and other pirates looking at Whitebeard across what looks like a small canyon. It all makes sense when we get to the main panel of this double page spread, one of the many in this great war.

That last quake that Whitebeard launched against Akainu has split the whole plaza right down the middle, Marines and Whitebeard on one side, pirates on the other. Even with all that we've seen so far, just looking at these displays of power that Whitebeard is exhibiting is just amazing.
Sengoku's being a dumbass though. "He's lost his face and still has this much power?" Hello!! This is the guy that you yourself called "The Strongest Man in the World" and said had enough power to destroy the world! Ever since the beginning of this war he's done nothing but live up to his reputation and taken unbelievable amounts of damage with no sign at all of slowing down, except for his brief coughing fit after being hit by Akainu. Hell, at this rate, I'd be surprised if Death himself could actually stop this guy. Think of Rock Lee fighting by reflex even after getting knocked out cold.
I can understand the man's frustration though. They are throwing literally everything they have at this guy, and he just won't die. Unlike the Espada that turned out to be a bunch of pussies, this man has earned every last bit of his enormous reputation.
The pirates begin their escape, and start pulling all the New World ships into the shore to board them. Hancock, unsurprisingly, is worried about Luffy. Sentoumaru already knows about her taking out the Pacifista, and she attacked Smoker to protect Luffy, so she's likely to be in serious trouble with the government if stays. She may attempt to make a break with the pirates, but I wonder how they might react to a Shichibukai chasing after them.
Whitebeard's pounding away at the Marines like nobody's business, nothing new here. Moving on.
Side note: seems that Hancock's snake is named Sarome.
By the pricking of my thumbs, something wicked this way comes...http://i163.photobucket.com/albums/t300/mastersniper999/One%20Piece%20Reviews/pic4-2.jpg
Peekaboo, I see you!!
Before much happens though, something monstrously huge appears peeking out from behind the Marine HQ building. This guy seriously looks bigger even than Oars.
To quote all the most annoying commercials ever....But wait, there's more! Someone stands atop the execution platform, observing the battle from afar. Sengoku is pissed and surprised, Doflamingo is amused (though, everything amuses this guy), and Whitebeard is furious, breaking his silence for the first time in this chapter.

It's Blackbeard!!! He's glad that he could make it in time to see Whitebeard's death, and laughs that hearty laugh of his. His crew seems to have gotten significantly bigger too. In addition to Shiryuu of the Rain, there are 4 new faces, 3 of which are wearing prison clothing.
3 of the faces seem fairly simple to predict. The big fucking giant standing (or, an even more frightening possibility, sitting) behind HQ is likely to be "Colossal Battleship" San Juan Wolf. The big portly guy in the back chugging down on a sake bottle may be "Big Drinker" Basco Shot. The woman is probably Catarine Devon, who Iva named as the most dangerous woman pirate ever.
At this time, please take a moment to count up all the Blackbeard pirates. BB + Doc Q + Jesus + Lafitte + Van Auger + San Juan + Shiryuu + Basco + Catarine + unknown guy = 10 people.
Now count the Strawhats. Luffy + Zoro + Sanji + Nami + Robin + Chopper + Franky + Nami + Brook = 9 people.
A lot of people believe that the Blackbeard crew will be the "final boss" of this series, so to speak, with each member of the Strawhats having a counterpart in the Blackbeard crew. At this moment, the Blackbeard Pirates have one more member than the Strawhats. If the "final boss" theory is correct, it means that Oda has at least one more member planned for the Strawhats.
Speculate all you want on what this final member may be. My personal favorite for the position would be an as-yet unintroduced character that uses Rokushiki, knows Haki, and wields a Nyoibo. Oh, and does NOT have a Devil Fruit power. That's my wish for the next Strawhat member, not a prediction.
