Character Popularity Poll

So released with chapter 98 were two pages of different characters we have encountered. It seemed like forever to get a hold of the raw, thanks to Vicara.

Deadline for voting is September 13th, and I believe if it's post mark by that day and they will accept the vote. Out of all the thousands of entries, 100 will receive an Otter toy, woo hoo. We should see the results with a color spread around 3 months, 10~12 more chapters.

Hey, in One Piece character polls, even Oda-sensei himself is a "character" you can vote for XD Not to mention the gag easter egg character Pandaman and even the Den Den Mushi (a telephone-like thing). Oh and you could vote for Watsuki-sensei too in RuroKen polls :)

I'm quite interested to see who will turn out as the favourite character - Saikou or Shuujin (I don't think #1 will be anyone other than the two of them but who knows lol).

I voted for Azuki's mom. I hope she wins the whole thing and they decide to have her take up work as a mangaka too. We need a mecha manga and she is the one to deliver.

Personally, I'm shocked that Shuujin is ranked so low. I initially thought it would be either Saikou or Shuujin taking the top spot but Eiji getting it instead is not really a surprise. Otter #11 ranking so high was a surprise as well, as was Hattori (Akira) ranking so low.

Wow! Eiji is first! Eccentrics must be really popular, cause Hiramaru and Otter11 (omg) are 3rd and 6th!
lol at Yoshida in 9th place, sadistic editors must also have a fanbase.
I'm surprised Iwase managed to get in the first 10. People must like her more than they let on.
But what's with Hattori in the 12th place? ;.; He deserves to be higher!

1.Eiji's victory isn't surprising for me. He is a pure win: eccentric, as you said, but funny and full of knowledge at the same time.
2.IMAO, the most logical would be that Takagi and Mashiro would change his positions.I don't like Mashiro, but I'd understand he was going to get a lot of votes...but ranking 2nd is too much for me
3. Hiramaru is the greatest surprise for me. I really like his character, but I never realized how popular could he be

The stupidity of these popular polls reminds me of the Gintama arc which was one of the most genius idea ever. I wonder if they will be introduced in Bakuman too

Oh, IMHO, when the main character don't get the first place in the popularity poll the story isn't going well!
It's only my personal opinion, but it seems that since the story is about them (the main character) the author isn't telling/making the plot how it should be.
Essencially, the manga follow the dreams/ambitions of the lead character if he don't get 1st place something is fishy.

I always thought it was pretty common for the main character not to get the #1 spot. For Naruto and Bleach, neither Naruto the character nor Ichigo are #1... Iirc for the first poll for Naruto, Kakashi came out on top.

Personally, for most of the series I read/watch, my favourite character is often another character that isn't the main. Perhaps its something psychological, like seeing too much/enough of that main character, and wanting to know more about that side character who's awesome but doesn't get as much attention by virtue of the fact that he's a side character. And well, fangirls sometimes just vote for the bishounens (though that doesn't apply in this situation I think). Okay I don't really know if all that makes sense, but just my 2cents on that matter :)

Well, that said, Saikou is #2, but Shuujin at #5 is certainly more of a shocker. Main characters getting #2 is acceptable imo, but #5 is pushing it... Any thoughts on why Shuujin ranks so low? Personally I prefer his character to Saikou's, so I don't really get why so few voted for him :(

In these times of Amy Whinehouse; loud, obnoxious, quirky characters are in.

I agree, but Saikou is none of those traits you've listed XD

I always thought Saikou was the more serious and cynical one (except when he starts thinking about Azuki and spinning in his chair with a stupid grin and all that), and that Shuujin, while being the supposedly more intellectual of the two, was the more outgoing and loud one (not to mention being a dork at times).

In the next character poll, i can Imagine Eiji or hiramura being 1st place, and the other 2nd, while Saiko 3rd.
I just don't feel like Saiko has done anything to really deserve the spot he got = /

I feel like Kaya hasn't done anything either to deserve her rank, really, she's just kinda...there = /
I wish some characters would have a more important role.

jeez guys. before you start analyzing these polls you must realize this: each person cast ONE vote (at least we can assume that was the case for most people). thus, hattori being low doesnt mean people dont like him and saiko being higher than shujin just means more people have saiko as number one. for example, i do like shujin and hattori but i'll vote for niizuma coz he's my #1 fav. i only get to vote for my number one, not for everyone i like.

this is the same reason why guys like rock lee (naruto) and isshin (bleach) rank low in popularity polls. its not because people dont like them. its just because someone else has the number one spot.

being a main character, you may think shujin should at least be in the top three. but the truth is that people tend to have awesome supporting characters such as niizuma, kakashi (naruto) or hitsugaya (bleach - i prefer aizen personally) as number 1s rather than the shujins, narutos and ichigos even if we do like them, its just how fans are generally. because of this, in storys with a LOT of characters the main characters actually come to a DISADVANTAGE when it comes to polls like these.

also consider that only a few thousand people voted in the polls, taking their word for ALL the bakuman fanbase is a BIG approximation.

BOTTOM LINE: dont take the polls too seriously, they are a vague indication not stone cold facts.

PS - top 5 is a pretty good rank for any character
PS2 - hattori gets very little screen/panel time, so people probably do like him but not as number one
PS3 - in bleach polls, except the fourth character poll and the zanpakuto poll. ichigo has been NUMBER ONE in every other poll, plus he dominated the ENTIRE TOP FOUR in the best fight poll.
