I hope Funimation or Viz pick the property up and redub it. That would be AWESOME.

As for me i'm glad that 4kids dropped the rights, now hopefully someother company [looks at ViZ] can pick it up and get new Nakama for us pirates. And once and for all we can admit that One Piece is better than Naruto. ^_^

4Kids Cancels One Piece Production (2006-12-06 11:06:38)
4Kids Marketing Director Roz Nowicki has confirmed that the company will not adapt additional episodes of One Piece. 4Kids has dubbed 104 episodes of the series into English, 78 of which have aired in the United States. yea, seriously, when I see the news on the website, I was estatic, now they can hopefully run an unedited version somewhere. ^_^ But since most of us are pirates im guessing we have all 288 episodes in our Hard drive

i would have loved it if it was even on AdultSwim at night-- outside of kids eyes and it wasnt soo heavily edited.

Anybody else that takes it up better not do the same thing. Good Riddance.

EDIT:
there is a similar thread here: http://mangahelpers.com/forum/index.php?topic=11689.0
maybe you should ask one of the mods to merge the two threads.

Thank fucking Christ.

Finally.

I hope 4kids crumbles.

Now if only there's a company who'll buy the One Piece license off of 4kids and make a real dub and an uncut Japanese version with subtitles. I would buy that.

That's where another problem comes into play.
Toei (company who produces One Piece in Japan) could do what they did with the Sailor Moon series and just lock up One Piece and never re-license it.
We will have to wait and see what happens.

I would rather One Piece wasn't re-licensed if they are just going to reduce it to what 4-kids made it. It's a good series it deserves better.

Let me add this bit in.......for those who are new to this......

When the article says "104 episodes", it is not episodes 1 to 104 of the series. It is actually a insanely spliced 104 episodes, with certain episodes either being merged into a single episode, or just plain skipped altogether like the Apis arc and the Little Garden arc (despite the fact that 4Kids did not remove Mr. 3 from his brief stint in the Arabasta arc, and made it seem like they had show Little Garden with his dialogue with Crocodile and Baroque Works members)......among other senseless edits and crap.

Example:
--Original version: Crocodile gets defeated in episode 126
--Dub version: Crocodile's defeat is episode 94

kadodo

So the dub version used to be kind of longer?

goofy_man
December 10, 2006, 01:51 AM
So the dub version used to be kind of longer?

No, the original is longer.
For unknown reasons, 4Kids skipped and spliced episodes at random parts in the series to shorten the series, yet when continuity errors (such as Mr. 3 appearing in Arabasta defending his actions in Little Garden in the dub when his whole arc was skipped over) appeared, 4Kids did not edit them out and kept them in, thinking viewers would be idiots and not notice.

Then there are other edits, such as Sanji's cigarette becoming a lollipop, but edited poorly (Dub Sanji would hold his "lollipop" upside down--with the candy part resting on his thumb.) See below:
http://www005.upp.so-net.ne.jp/radiator/dub_sanji3.jpg

This was one of the biggest edits that infuriated One Piece fans......mainly for how obvious of an edit it is.......

That's IF Viz gets it.
4Kids still has the licensing rights, and those expire in 2009. They could be really evil a$$holes and simply sit on the rights until they expire.......

However, seeing as how 4Kids has been steadily losing money since they acquired One Piece, they (meaning Al Kahn) will be desperately looking for funds to bail themselves out and possibly avoid Chapter 11 bankruptcy. I'm not sure if they have lost so much revenue that they are in actual danger of bankruptcy, but......knowing 4Kids, any time they are not on top and profiting may as well be called being in financial trouble to them.

That's good news for OP fans. That was the most butchered piece of work I have ever seen in my life. It was more likely to turn off potential viewers than attract any new audiences. So even if it might not be dubbed again, still very good news for OP because at least there's hope for a kind of redemption sometimes in the future. Say direct "uncensored" videos, at least. But since the voice acting was terrible, probably just better to redo it all.

I doubt that Naruto would be dropped anytime soon btw, it's pretty popular right now in America. Most of the reason people hate it is because they're more used to the original versions, but the new audience here doesn't care.

Yeah. I couldn't be happier that a company decided to stop doing dubs for a series. I haven't seen any worse than One Piece ever since I started watching anime, so it seems like it'll be near impossible for the new company to screw it up any worse.

I can actually hope it'll be good, now.

I can see the lock up happening but they (or somebody I am not quite sure who...was it Viz?) also released the first two seasons of Sailor Moon on a dvd box set unedited. But that was 5 or 8 years after the series was canceled on Toonami. So the same thing could happen with One Piece but the sucky thing with that is...it could be years before that happens.

Cartoon Network/Toonami seriously hyped up Naruto where as with One Piece they didn't do the same amount of advertising. Unless Toonami starts advertising it more then no. But the dubs do suck and they can be quite confusing.

Same thing happened with One Piece and 4Kids.
They never really hyped it up as much as they did with Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh!

Viz has definitely hyped up the One Piece manga, at least......so the manga is still getting some attention.

If it ever got a half-decent dub, and they stop butchering it with editing, i think it would be a hit. One piece is the funniest of the manga that that I've read and the anime carries most of the humor over.

The problem is who would air it. Even if unedited it's target audience is just to young for adult swim and toonami has already been down that road so they won't buy it again. I just don't see anyone out their that would buy/air it.

It seems like that happens with all my favorite series--the Bleach and Naruto dubs are ho-hum at best, One Piece sucked ass, and Hajime No Ippo (my favorite anime series) has one of the worst dubs I've ever heard. I've heard better dubs on obscure hentai than on Hajime no Ippo (don't ask me how), and One Piece isn't much better.

I guess the popularity of the show doesn't really mean shit after it gets licensed, sometimes.

Just like everyone said this is the best thing that happend to One Piece in America. 4Kids is on of the most horrible licensors here in America. I heard quotes from 4Kids saying that they will edit and Americanize shows so kids won't notice it came from Japan. Hopefully, when One Piece re-airs everything would be like Bleach and Inuyasha where there no edits just crappy English Dubs.

Shimbo-kun
February 20, 2007, 08:27 AM
Actually for those of you who are saying One Piece isn't popular your mistaken. When Toonami aired One Piece at 9:30 at night One Piece got good ratings and watches from kid 9 - 14 and some higher than that. Thats why many fans were thinking if the editting was really necessary. I mean come on! Like a 14 year old wants to see a person dying from squirt guns?

Well on another note we might be lucky. If One Piece continues as it is, having some American teenagers and adults watch, when the Arabasta (i'm sorry i know it's Alabasta but I dont like that one!) arc finishes some teens and kids might be able to win us over a good dub. But time will tell and hell i started out hating One Piece, now I'm a parasite reading every manga chapter and every episode! lol

They didn't. They just stopped airing it on T.V. However, FUNimation, with its new and improved (no, really. Their dub is amazingly good) dub, has been releasing the series on DVD since May 2008. They're up to Whiskey Peak now, and DVD's SEEM to be coming out every two months or so, so start saving up your money if you want to watch the dub. Although I suppose that you could try renting the DVD's...

Skyrius
June 21, 2009, 10:37 PM
Funimation released their bundled episode 1-14 at AX last year for about 40 dollars. I spent the last of my money on it XD On the bright side, I like the their dubbed version a hell of a lot more that 4kids. If you ever get the chance (and if you have a Wii), you can grab One Piece: Unlimited Adventure in English. Funimation's voice actors did that one too, and you can hear Franky's (probably) planned voice actor, seeing as the dubbed version hasn't caught up to Water Seven yet (unless they decide to change it).

I haven't bough the DVD's for any of the other episodes yet, but there was one thing that bothered me. As you know, Funimation also translated the opening songs for One Piece into English. I know that they've done We Are! and Hikari E. However, that would kinda mean that they're missing a couple of the opening songs (well, granted the second one's eurobeat type style isn't exactly easy to put lyrics to). So, do they still have those in Japanese or did they just take them out completely. Anyone know? (I'll be pissed if they did though >_>)

Imitorar
June 21, 2009, 10:47 PM
I'm not sure what you're asking. They didn't skip any songs. For the dub, they dubbed the songs. For the sub, they subtitled the songs. Both versions are accessible on the DVD, it depends on if you're watching the dub or the sub. What else would you expect them to do?

Skyrius
June 22, 2009, 04:19 PM
Nah, I wouldn't know. That's why I was asking. The impression I got was that they hadn't dubbed all of the songs. I was just going off of the assumption that was true. If they have, then just ignore my question. I haven't gotten around to watching most of Funimation's episodes, so I wasn't sure.

ANY dubbing company would do better than 4Kids.
FUNimation's dub is consistent with the original- at least they don't "butcher" anything up. They have their censorship, such as referring "Eneru" as King instead of God. It is a satisfying dub at least, but any real One Piece fan would prefer the original.

For me, its great news that they've stopped airing the dubs! They were painfully awful to watch/hear!!! It disgraced Oda's name!!! The main problem with these tv companies/broadcasters is that they dub most, if not all, Japanese anime in a child-like manner and approach all of them in the same way!!! Which is a big NO NO NO!!!

Ratatosk
September 25, 2011, 05:19 PM
yeah, Luffy's voice is impossible to dub; you just don't get women voice-actors who specialize in playing badass kids in America, and even so he has the kind of voice that usually ends up playing sarcastic side-characters (like that little pervy kid in Dragon Ball) and the kind of over-the-top character who would usually be played by a bloke, even in Japan. And is immensely childish and laughing his ass off at everything most of the time but occasionally deadly serious, like the rest of the story. Especially in the early episodes where he's just being random with no evidence to back it up the acting carries the series. You just can't win.

One Piece voice actors are unusually good too, who knows how the got so many veteran voice actors on such a new show (I might be obsessed but Zoro seems to be everywhere these days..)

Anime dubs are getting better though, even for people who don't imagine everything they read with an american accent (Bebop was good in the day, FMA took itself seriously..., Princess Mononoke even got Neil Gaiman to edit the script...)

Funimation Acquires More Episodes of One Piece

The North American anime distributor Funimation announced its acquisition of the next block of One Piece for English dubbing on Friday. Senior Brand Manager Curtis Shaw spoke live during the Unofficial One Piece Podcast and gave several new details about the upcoming season.

Funimation picked up where it left off at episode 206 and purchased all the way to episode 263. Shaw mentioned that the next season will be in high-definition and in 16 by 9 aspect ratio. Funimation would like to keep the same format for releases; however, with the upgraded aspect ratio and HD content, a Blu-ray/DVD combo release maybe possible down the line. Funimation will also try to keep as much consistency as possible with regard to the voice acting, but actor schedules and location will affect casting.

Shaw gave a rough release date of Summer 2012.

The One Piece dub is starting on Adult Swim again in America, beginning with episode 207. Kind of a shame to start with the Foxy arc instead of Water 7, but I guess it's important for Aokiji to get his introduction.
