Oda Eiichiro does not need an introduction. He's the author of the best selling manga ever, One Piece. With the exception of Full Metal Alchemist no manga has as much sentimental value to me than One Piece.

Not sure if this is the right place, but I got a question:
Does anyone know of any public appearances of Eiichiro Oda? Any Manga/Anime conventions in Japan he is sure to show up at?
I'm currently in Japan and I'd really like to get his signature :D

From what I have heard, he is a very private and busy guy. The only appearances I have ever heard that he shows up at are Jump Festa and I think those are hard to get into. Jump Festa 2012 is December 17-18 if you are still going to be around then. I'm not sure he gives out autographs though.

Thanks for the information! Couldn't find anything on that matter :)
You mean 2011? Yeah, I'll still be around. But you're right, from what I've seen online it doesn't seem like he was giving signatures :/ Oh well, I'll still try to get in and see him :D

These are so pretty. :wtf If only I had money...
After Oda finishes One Piece, he can probably go live the rest of his life as a designer. His art style has character so it will look nice on merchandises.

Holy cow that's expensive! O.O
I like the look of the lighter but the detail on the ball point casing(?) looks pretty neat but for that price....I could buy a lot of basic stationary even enough to supply a fricking school.

D: I have no idea if it's the brand that's expensive or the fact that it's Oda who designed it. Hopefully in the future he'll design something similar but accessible for the 99%.

English version:
Here's my version. I wasn't sure about some passages though.
Why did you make Rufy a rubber-man?
Because Luffy is the one that fools around the most. I can't keep drawing seriously all the time, so even when I'm doing serious fights, I want him fooling around. The image of his arms and legs stretching everywhere is funny to see, right? That's why.
How did you come up with the idea of the powers of the Devil Fruits?
I thought about the things readers would love to do and I tried as much as possible to give form to them.
Which Devil Fruit would you like to eat?
Hana Hana fruit.
If I had a lot of hands I could write a lot!
Your history as Mangaka.
When I was about 4, I found out that there was such an occupation as a manga writer and that was when I set my eyes on becoming one myself.
During middle school I had the idea of writing a serial manga about pirates. I wrote my manga on a notebook, but in order to submit it to a manga contest a page limit was to be observed (31 pages) and I wasn't able to do it at all. Even now, 68 volumes of One Piece had been published and yet I'm not done writing, no way a 31 page limit could be enough to me (laughs)
It's funny how in the manga you answer to the fans that ask you questions and strange requests. Who are them for you?
They're friends!
They might seem impertinent when you read them in the manga. However the postcards they send are really cute, enjoyable and they soften me up.
If I hadn't received so many letters I probably would have already gave up as mangaka.
Really, keep up this amount of support.
What do you think about being a mangaka?
I want to make the readers feel good, that's my strongest desire.
When I joined middle school, I immediately made friends talking about managas.
If someone reads the same manga you read he'll become your friend.
I thought that this was the most wonderful thing about this job.
I want to be the topic everyone has in common
-------------
The one in the photo is the kid who interviewed Oda.(the article was published in "Elementary School Asahi Shinbun",so they had him interviewed by a kid) Law is his favorite character, and , as he said , that was the happiest moment of his life. (lucky bastard )

The kids who interviewed Oda are nine and ten years old; what really got to me was that they weren't even born when ONE PIECE was serialized while the nine and ten year olds who read it in 1997 are now 24 and 25. Two separate generations are engrossed with the story, and that's really cool.
On a separate note, it's cute how he perceive the readers as friends.

I haven't seen any reference to it here, so this is the right thread to quote it in extense. Credits: wispyhollow from one.piece.livejournal.com
..So my friend was recently showing me some pictures which surfaced on Chinese facebook (which is powerful)... of Oda's desk! Cool stuff these; I thought I should share; seeing my role model artist's desk and workplace gave me a lot of inspiration:
http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c34/warpstar99/Manga%20Artists%20Deskspace/5.jpg
Things to notice:
- A line up of One Piece tankoubons directly in eye sight. Several volumes are open and at hand on the left for quick references of characters [eg. Hancock].
- Probably a small pocket translator under the books (the silver fold-up laptop-looking thing). For english words? For naming Sanji's Diable Jambe? Who knows.
- Opened drink can; probably for those moments of thirst riiight before the deadline ;)
- Assorted erasers, inking tools, pens, etc, scattered all over the desk (what else would we expect?)
- Drawing eraser; the black, squishy, moldable kind
- A tissue SOAKED in ink, probably for cleaning off pen nibs... or maybe for wiping ink off tired hands...
- A long, white eraser tube
- A series of ink pens, various size set
- A draped pair of black headphones; I wonder what kind of music Oda listens to!
- Cordless phone; probably for when his editor needs to contact him~
- Japanese Reference books in the right corner of the table
- Finished inked pages lying in a pile on the right - looking sharp!
- A white sheet in the middle of the table for bleed from the pages Oda's working on - it's totally smeared in ink and splatters - and even what looks like some splotches of spilled tea!
And interestingly enough...
- A huuge ashtray with cigarettes smack in the middle. Can anyone confirm if they know Oda's a smoker? Haha, it kind of adds to his atmosphere and charisma... :P
http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c34/warpstar99/Manga%20Artists%20Deskspace/7.jpg
- I LOVE seeing Oda's names and roughs; it's so motivational--!... here's the finished pages of these drafts, as a reminder (Ch.522, Pg.02-03):

Pretty cool, right? It's so amazing seeing the genious' workplace; the place at which he creates stories and unravels adventures of unparalleled intricacy. It's where he works his hardest and dreams the hardest to create a fantastical world for his readers to marvel at.

I have the book this came from, and you can see that the books on the right hand corner are things related to pirates or marine life.
A lot of mangakas seem to place their tankobons at close proximity for easy reference. :XD

This should be the end of the story, the drawing in the cover: the crown sumerges and will end in a treasure that belongs to the mermaid:

Such a theme for wealthy people.

Aohige from AP translated some interesting texts of the One Piece newspapers published in Nov and Dec of this year:
BTW, I heard there was an article in one of these One Piece Newspaper that Oda stated One Piece is roughly 60% through.
I'm trying to find the source of that info.
EDIT: Ah, apparently it's this week's one. the one redon posted last page.
http://imgbox.com/abwMCpkx
It's not an exact science by any means, and he actually said at least 60% through.
Reading the two editors (Takeru Isaka and Hattori Jean-Baptiste - Akira) interview couple of interesting notes
- Both editors testify they get scolded by Oda sometimes.
- Apparently when an editor is assigned to Oda, one of the first thing they experience is Oda telling them all the major secrets of One Piece, up to and incluing the end. (!!!)
....... QUICK SOMEONE KIDNAP ONE OF THESE EDITORS OR PAST EDITORS!
The editor said as a reader of OP, it's somewhat saddening to learn all the spoilers ahead of time. I can see that.
When asked what sucks about being editors, they both testified Oda's obsessive perfectionist attitude getting in the way of deadline lol.
Apparently just the other day, Oda missed the deadline and it was hell getting the chapter in time. Oda's attitude is "The chapter is done when it's done".
As for editoral inputs, Oda mostly uses the editors as "first readers to read his work". He observe the reaction of the editors as a measure of how the readers would react. They testify they don't contibute much to Oda's work, since neither of them have anywhere near the talent Oda has, and it's sometimes painful that they can only stand by and wait, unable to help, when deadline is pressing.
Hattori says the most memorable scene of OP (for the chapters he was editing) was Sabo's comment about ashamed of his birth as a noble, and Dragon's shocked reaction to have such a young child come to that conclusion. It really drove home how talented a story writer he is.

Oda drew the Dupont ligther in One Piece chapter 663 (thanks to Redon from AP for the image):
http://t.imgbox.com/acbj4yEX.jpg
The whole panel:
http://img202.imageshack.us/img202/7214/deathcigarretes.png
The cigarrettes brand is funny: 'Death'. It is a clear message against smoking. I almost can see the negotiations with Dupont people:
Dupont: We will pay you $ x0000000000000.
Oda: Ok, I accept.
Dupont: please Mr Oda, would it be possible to include a little panel with a drawing of the lighter or the pen in your manga?
Oda: eh? that? mmmm (Inner thought: it is a lot of money). Just a single panel? .... ok.
Later in the intimacy of his study: "Damm you Dupont people. I wil draw the lighter but I will put a message against smoking."

Two comments:
In 5:06 the mermaid ministory is shown in a wall; it's confirmed, the ones above published are all the panels of the ministory.
In the vid, the guy talks about two different sets. So I searched a bit and found that, there are three sets with one much more affordable then the other two made of gold: The Prime Collection (about 670 US), The Premium Collection, (made of gold, 2874 US) and the Prestige Collection, (18000 US).
