R: Hello for the first time, Oda-sensei. I've read all the previous 57 volumes, and I was thinking, I don't quite understand how "Phoenix Marco"'s Zoan fruit of the "legendary beast" kind is different from Ace's "Meramera" fruit.

O: Yeah, I know... I've omitted the explanation from this war arc, because I focused on the pacing and wanted to move the story forward. To explain Marco's ability just a little bit: he's Zoan, so he does have a body. But since he's got "the blue fire of revival" - the Phoenix's ability - wounds will regenerate, so attacks will not damage him (though there's a limit to the regeneration). In other words, the flames are for regeneration. These blue flames don't have the characteristics of actual fire - they don't spread and burn things, and they aren't hot. They're completely different from Ace's flames. I might touch on this in the main story at some point, so I'll leave it at this for now.

This was very precious information for me, that means that the mythical zoans have nothing to do with elements. As some people were thinking of the whole "Zapdos" (eletric bird), that makes it even more interesting.

I'd guess there would be a Medusa DF, but Hancock's got one similar to it.

This may have been exclusive to the phoenix fruit. No offensive fire abilities, because it's not associated with a phoenix (breathing fire, shooting flames, etc), it's just known for revival.

If he had a dragon mythical zoan (like many suspect Moneky D Dragon has), he perhaps could breath fire....control weather like many eastern dragons are believed to do...etc.

They aren't going to have the intangibility of the logia though.

Don't know if this information is reliable, got it from Wikia.

But there you go, another mythical, Sengoku's:

The Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Daibutsu is a Mythical Zoan-class Devil Fruit that allows the user to transform into a Daibutsu (a giant Buddha statue). It was eaten by Sengoku, former Fleet Admiral of the Marines. The fruit's name was revealed in SBS Volume 60.

When Marco turns to the full pheonix, attacks just go through him like he's logia. His first encounter with Kizaru shows this. Kizaru shot out numerous light "bullets" which all went straight through his pheonix form without doing any damage

When he is still in his human form, attacks do damage him, but he can switch the damage area to flames to regenerate. This is seen in a moment of distraction, he is shot and hurt by Akainu, but quickly turn those wounds into flames.

Taking advantage of regeration ability, he is most often seen using his wings to fend off powerful attacks from the admirals.

However, one thing people often forget. He's a ZOAN, that means with transformation, he gains a tremendous boost in power. Remember when White Beard does his earthquake punch toward the marines? Yeah, everyone went flying accept the admirals who easily withstood it ,demonstrating the physical strength of the admirals:

Now, this leads to my point about Marco. Even with the physical strength possessed by the admirals, Marco could send Kizaru and Aojiki flying like a beam of light (the same way people are sent flying by Kizaru's kicks) when he kicked the admirals.

With kicks that sent even admirals flyin like that, I wouldn't surprised if we find out that he is the one with the most powerful kicks in the One Piece World.

As for whether his flames can do damage or not, it's not clearly answered in the manga yet. So that can still be of debate. What's interesting is that in this particular scene, he is seen using a different color of flame in his right hand compared to the flame protrude from the rest of his body. Also, why would he turn only his right hand into this flame if it only has defensive ability of regeneration. Wouldn't turning the whole body into flame make more sense? Unless, he is using that particular flame for offense. Additionally, the way he stand using his right hand looks like he's gonna use it for attack.

My guess is that there's still things unspoken about his fruit's ability.

It is reliable, the information comes from the just published One Piece: Green Data Book.
