they help a great deal and will most likely tell you more in shorter time than in the case somebody here makes a step by step tutorial.

Now I'm pretty much a n00b when it comes to doing anything in scanning. However, the way I split it up was
1: take your pen tool and use it to highlight one of the halves of the picture.
2: copy the picture.
3:paste the picture in a new document.
4: save document.
5: repeat with other half of the picture.
6: save the other half as a separate document.
Viola, you have now split the picture. As for the original pre- split picture, there is no need for it anymore.
For cleaning I would use one of the guides that ttxdragon suggested. I also loved how user friendly Shinweis <a href=http://mangahelpers.com/forum/index.php?topic=2433.0>Cleaners Compendium</a> was, and how easy it was to pick up, so I would also recommend using that.
