According to the Jump website(http://shonenjump.com/e/manga-shou/treasure.html), you need to submit a 31/45 page story manga or a 15/19/31 page gag manga. It's probably implied that the manga has to be drawn.

Is there a treasure contest next month too? I guess I can't do it for this month OTL
And does the manga have to be in japanese, 'cause I find it awkward when the website is in english. Why would they trouble to translate it, when they can leave it in japanese if the entries have to be in japanese either way. And if we have to write in japanese, I'm f*cked lol
oh and goood luck Booba!!

Oh, I saw a vietnamese entry (actually the result announcement) for the Stokin Fire & Garyokin Fire contest (4th place I think), but I don't know if the artist translated it to japanese or not or if Shueisha did. I know for sure that the artist does not live in Japan.

Ah well he entered Garyokin Fire contest. well there you already have a storyboard and the japanese text from Jump, so he had just to draw it. No translation or anything then. Still great job for getting the 4th place and its cool to know that you will get an e-mail by shueisha if you did won something.
Well i will enter the Tezuka contest myself next month. I hope I will do beter then i think XD

Heh,same here.I guess it's because i haven't practised this much with ps,but i just preffer having it in front of me.It's like...i have more control over it,if you know what i mean.
And about that Stokin Fire & Garyokin Fire contest.Do you really have to draw 3 pages only?
Nightthroat
February 22, 2011, 09:24 AM
yeah i am totally the same XD
its like i have absolute control over it and i dont have to fear that my PC delete it or soemthing. XD
yeah at that contest. Jump gives you a rough storyboard of 3 pages and you have to draw them in a fine manuscript. its a contest to find good artists or so i think.
[hr]
Puh..so changed some part at the first 13 pages because i wasnt satisfied with the outcome of some panels. They just lookes wrong XD Now I finished page 14 and I cann keep going ^^

Guys... Shonen Jump only accepts works in Japanese and sent from Japan!
If you send them a package with your manuscript and they see its a foreign one they won't even open it to see the content.
The reason is that this is not only a contest. It's a way to find new talents to work for them. In their system, you NEED to live in Japan to work for them.
So, if you are not in Japan, please, don't waste your money sending your manuscript for them. They are not going to consider it as an entry.
Nightthroat
February 23, 2011, 11:21 AM
How do you know? Did you already enter the contest or what? Sorry but i dont believe anyone without proof. Even so why should they translate the contest in english and put it on the english website, when they only search people living in japan. if they live in japan they should be able to read and write Japanese. So its useless to translate the whole contest into english in my eyes.
Steffan
February 23, 2011, 11:24 AM
^ Exactly what Nightthroat said.
Assumptions are worth nothing. Give us some proof and then we'll believe you.

A friend of mine went to Japan to live there for almost 10 years. He writes and draws comics and he tried to submit names and manuscripts to Shonen Jump.
When I saw this threat I asked him about this infos to help you guys. To my surprise, what he said was exactly what I wrote on my post.
I'm not trying to be a tr00l or nothing, I'm just trying to help you guys.
The reason they translate the page I don't know... my friend neither. But what I know is that they don't accept foreign submissions.
Googlez_kun
February 23, 2011, 01:19 PM
Sounds reasonable and i don't want to say you are wrong, but they accept forgeign submissions. An example would be that boy from Vietnam.Maybe it's limited to Asia so to people who know japanese and are close enough to move to Japan.Sending something from Europe or from the US(even though it's fairly close) is futile then.
Hikohohodemi
February 23, 2011, 01:51 PM

I think we should wait and see what really happens untill this is proven to be honest. and the same as what google-kun said i dont want to say your wrong but I think its best to at least try it and see what comes of it I mean honestly, I don't think it should be a problem anymore seeing as everything can be pretty much done over the internet, I mean right now I'm working with a writer for a zombie comic thats getting published in the summer and I haven't meet the dude or anything yet, I have only spoken to him over the internet through emails.
Personally I think it would be kool for someone outside of japan to make a manga for them, to bring something fresh and new to the medium.

That's my wish, too, but it's easier said than done. They would have to translate it into japanese, which takes a fair amount of time,so you would need to finish the manuscript even earlier than normal manga-ka.Furthermore,you could not use english puns or idioms that fit into the manga,as they would be awkward in the japanese version.Another thing would be that you have to meet with your editor regularly and talk to him in japanese. The meetings might work over the internet, but as long as you don't speak japanese fluently, you can forget becoming a manga artist.Sorry for those harsh words guys, but that is the way i see it.

A friend of mine went to Japan to live there for almost 10 years. He writes and draws comics and he tried to submit names and manuscripts to Shonen Jump.
How long ago was this? Was this at the start of those 10 years? Because that would explain a lot.
The internet has evolved a lot over the past 10 years. It would be perfectly possible to work via the internet, 10 years ago that would have been impossible.
Not just that, foreigners are becoming more common in Japan.
I'm absolutely sure the Japanese aren't as xenophobic now as they were 10 years ago.
Also, considering that that Vietnam boy entered Stokin got 4th place, it sounds like Shueisha is pretty open to trying new things with new people.
Well, it's a given that, at the very least, you'd have to be fluent in Japanese if you're serious about working for a Japanese company in Japan.

Guys, this was really recent. He came back last year and he tried to submit some things during his last years there.
The problem is that Shonen Jump doesn't work with the internet. You need to do it in paper. You need to meet your editor regularly, you need to give your manuscripts to them and that's the reality.
This guy from Vietnam was probably in Japan by the time he send the manuscript. At any moment he said that he wasn't in Japan.
My friend is back in Brazil now, but I have some Skype credits to spend and I'll try to ask him to call them someday to clear this doubt.
I'm sorry I created this mess here, but I was just trying to help.

Yeah, I also think it's worth a shot, despite what DidCart said.
Companies can be weird sometimes, and you just can't know for sure until you try.
And hey, if they refuse to look at your comic, at least you can be proud that you finished a project. ;)
DidCart
March 02, 2011, 07:26 AM
To complete a project is something you guys should be proud of, for sure.
But please, do it in japanese at least. This way there is a very small chance that they'll read your manuscript.
And if you are going to send it, send it using a carrier like UPS or Fedex. They have experience with documents so they'll take care of your packages.
God luck for you all.

Mangatellers
March 20, 2011, 10:12 AM
Well.. Our first post here.. ^^
I would like to introduce the persons behind Mangatellers. We are two independant screenplay writers for manga and comics. We have two long scaled series right now in screenplay form and some concept art.
Currently we are co-operating with an artist and illustrator and we have completed a 45 page oneshot manga story in order to enter different competitions.
On March 17th, 2011 we sent the one - shot to the Editorial Department of Shueisha Inc, in order to participate in the monthly contest of “JUMP Treasure New Artist Prize” of the Wekkly Shonen Jump Magazine which takes place in March.
Following the requirements of the contest, unfortunately we can’t reveal anything from our one - shot until May, when the results are announced. The text of our story is in English and the sound effects in Japanese, in order for our one - shot to look more like a traditional manga. The reason why we didn’t make all our work in Japanese is that it was complicated and quite expensive either so we couldn’t afford it. We hope that our use of the English language will not be a problem to our participation in this contest.
The contest’s deadline is on March 31st, 2011. According to the Post Office, our work will arrive to the proper destination on March 27th, 2011. It remains to be seen whether the contest will actually take place due to the fact that Japan and Tokyo especially face problems, because of the earthquakes , the tsunami and the Radiation.
Of course our least worry is the contest right now. We wish for Japan’s state and citizen’s living conditions to get better as fast as possible.

Did they send some confirmation that they received your entry to the contest?
An email at least?
If they don't bother to notify people in any way, is there someone who can buy jump? I believe results are published, right?

Apparently they contact people after the results have been announced. (which is usually 1-2 months after the deadline)

There's no one stopping you from sending pages to them, but you'll have to send in a physical copy of your comic, since there is no way to contact Shueisha via e-mail.

The Tezuka Award is currently open for submissions, as you can see on this (http://shonenjump.com/j/manga-shou/teaka.html) page.
I don't know if they accept digitally drawn manga. (Though I don't see why not)

The mangaka writes the text in the speechbubbles himself, then the editor goes, and digitally enters it into the scanned manuscript.

No need to look for it,i think it was something saladesu posted.^^
But well, the characters are quite complex and need furigana,so they have to be in contact with the manga-ka when typing it,but that's not the case in this competition.I guess it's more a problem for us than for japanese newbies, because our characters would look terrible(XD),but still,i wonder how they deal with it when a character is not clearly written or they don't know which furigana to use.

Well im sure theyd fix it up at Sheuisha if you asked, im sure it was in this forum or another that the serialized mangaka's hand writes the text and then the editor puts it through on the computer, im sure they take the Jump Treasure contestents seriously. Im gonna get better at drawing and submit something next year when Takeshi Obata and\or Tsugumi Ohba (Bakuman & DeathNote) are judging again they've judged twice around this time within 2 years, Theyre geniuses so its probably raising the bar.
Oh this took me a while to find, so i thought i'd share it if someones interested.. Hope the link works, You gotta scroll to where it says "See Also" and select "Suceeded By, New Treasure JUMP MANGA Award"

VERY bad attitude. Google's translations are no good, at all, it's completely incomprehensible.
Please don't use Google Translate for your manga... They'd have no idea what's going on in your story.

May i ask how your assume they wont know what youve written about the story. Like Booba Said "How do you know", if you read Japanese thats a different story and should say but if you don't then you cant be 100% sure it being impossible to read.
It's true Google translations isn't at all accurate, i can't tell you if its any good from English to Japanese but Japanese to English is pretty good, i translate whole websites with it like in my previous wikipedia link, so i say as a last option give it a shot, but if theres a second alternative consider whats better, ive been trying to think of ways to translate, fortunatly at my school i have a Japanese Language teacher and a friend who studied it but not everyone has that. Oh how about people that translate manga online like for Bakuman it was done by Saladesu from Muda Scantrad, It's just an idea, Im sure there's a few translators on the net willing to help.
Hope I Was Some Help.

Eh, seems like I wasn't the only one glad to hear that the JTNAP takes submissions from other countries. Anyhow, they still want it in Japanese. I think it's best to start learning Japanese then asking others for help, because you'll eventually need to learn how to speak Japanese if you really want to get serialized or anything. But that's only if you're aiming for that though, if you only want to submit something to see how far you can get with your manga at your current level, then it should be okay.

The results of the March Contest is out and the winner is the 22-years old mangaka Hiroshi Taro Shimada. You can read his oneshot only in Japanese here: http://shonenjump.com/j/manga-shou/treasureread.html
We congratulate him for winning a position in Wekkly Shonen Jumps' official site. ^^
We may have lost in this competition, but we don't stop here. We are planning to send our one-shot to the Morning International Comic Competition held by Kodansha INC.http://morningmanga.com/micc/rule_e.html
This contest is in an international scale and according to the rules of the contest the text of the story can be in English. So there will be no problems there. We may present two or three pages (but without text) from our oneshot in the near future. Unfortunatelly the results of this contest will be announced in December of 2011. Until then, we can not reveal the full manga.
On another note our artist has made a fan art pic with the characters of RuN (http://www.mangatellers.com/run-intro-en#!__series) portrayed as Japanese Red Cross Society Members in order to support and promote the cause of Red Cross. You can view it here:
http://fc03.deviantart.net/fs71/i/2011/144/b/6/japanese_red_cross_society_run_by_mangatellers-d3h3xl4.jpg
Of course we would like to say that we are not doing this for commercial reasons. We are a non governmental, non commercial, independent Greek art team which makes manga and supports the Japanese culture here in Greece. What we are trying to do with this picture is to make people both domestically and internationally support the efforts of Japanese Red Cross Society. Please check and support their causes here: http://www.jrc.or.jp/english/index.html

So is the Weekly Shonen Jump treasure contest still going? I thought I read that it was monthly...???
I only just discovered it today and it sounds awesome :amuse I'm guessing it's for one-shots only? I have such a problem keeping it to that amount of pages >_< but it's worth a try! It has to be in japanese though? Getting the translation would be easy for me but then I'd have to typeset and I'd be worried if I messed up the line order of the kanji at all to fit the space the meaning may be altered...but then I'm researching that I guess for future projects :p
The Morning International Comic Competition sounds really good too! I presume both would need to be formatted right to left..?
Booba you don't enjoy inking? That's one of my favourite parts!:D (That is when i haven't broken or wasted all my pens and stop being so perfectionist :-_- )

'sup guys.
I submitted my oneshot to Treasure a few months ago, but unfortunately I didn't win anything (as I expected)
I uploaded it to drunkduck.com, so if anyone wants to check it out, go to: http://www.drunkduck.com/Paranormal_Detective/ (Likes, comments and favorites are very much appreciated!)
I never thought I'd win anything, I know that my art is nowhere near good enough and the story was too forced, but it was fun taking part in the contest and waiting for the results with other participants on sites such as 2chan.
Plus it was very good practice, I've improved a lot and I'm currently reworking the whole thing. :)
(and if you're wondering, yes, I did submit it in japanese, haha)

Wow, it's nice to see other people are trying! I'm not entering until I've reworked my story as best as it can be, improve my techniques, and get that extra money for supplies. If I'm going to pay all that money on shipping and supplies, then I want to put everything I have into it and then some. hopefully I'll be ready for December or February.
And for those who actually sent in an entry, how much did you pay in shipping?:^_^
I know this thread has been inactive but, as for people who are worried about the translating into Japanese factor, why not try learning it? This is a great place to start, http://ww8.tiki.ne.jp/~tmath/home/index.htm learn all of the lessons and you'll have pretty much all of the basics down pack.
The next step would be here, http://www.lang-8.com/ You can post your script online and have someone correct any mistakes. In exchange, just correct some of their entries, it's a wonderful alternative to having it professionally translated and it's also a great way to learn and make friends.
Don't worry, if you study hard and write it as best as you can; then they'll be able to make it sound more natural and help you with wording certain things.
Trust me, it's way smarter and safer than using Googles translate (when I started, googles translate was crap and well still is, but they sometimes get small things right.) and it's done wonders for my Japanese in the months that I've been studying. :p
Erm, if I went completely off topic then I'm sorry! :offtopic
One more thing for people who have/are going to enter in the near future, how do you plan on placing your text?
http://img823.imageshack.us/img823/8522/photogy.jpg
Anyway keep trying guys, and seriously let us know if you win!!!:yourock

Hey guys, I don't know if you are aware about Sasaki hisashi twitter(ex editor in chief of jump) but he once talked about this contest and it's rules.
First of all it absolutely has to be in japanese and he also said that even though it's possible for a foreigner too win if it's in Japanese, he considers it impossible to assign the winner an editor if he isn't living in japan...
It's quite a shame that jump doesn't seem to be much open minded about this, since with Internet and all nowadays it's quite possible to communicate with anyone all over the world, making manga wouldn't be much different...
Btw, I would like to share my works: www.dreamcatcherz.webege.com you can read my manga on my site.

Yes, but that all genuinely makes sense. They have more than enough good authors in Japan, why should they go through extra trouble for a foreign author? I feel like it's the author's responsibility to translate it to Japanese and make it as friendly to their culture as possible. The editor thing makes sense, too, they can't really have an editor for someone on the other side of the planet. Well, Iunno, it just makes a lot of sense to me.
