We've got a date for when chapter 280 will come out: January, 12th. Thanks to AlbatorBis for letting us know.

So that being said, we've had an awfully long break since the last Berserk chapter. The last chapter was released early September! So I thought I might as well start this Predictions thread and officially start the countdown here.

What will happen next? Last chapter had the Allied Forces of the Holy Vatican being surrounded by and attacked by the Kushan forces. Guts and his companions have apparently already left to head for Elfheim, despite Griffith being nearby at the time.

If you want to predict, this is the place to do it. This is also the places to post any spoilers if you find some, and we'll add them to the first post when they appear. We'll be creating Berserk R/T/S threads in the Downloads & Releases from now on, however.

My prediction: Ganishka is with his army this time facing Griffith who has got the pope on his side, the battle will lead to Griffith v Ganishka (which is going to be ultra awesome) and we might finally get to see a display of Griffith's demonic powers.

Wow that image is pretty terrifying. Well, I think it's safe to say that we will see more of the battle between the Vatican and Kushan forces. I agree with Silhouette, that since Ganishka is an Apostle himself, the one who will have to face him is the White Hawk himself. This should be interesting since it will more than likely give an insight into Griffith's power after the reincarnation.

As far as Guts' party goes, I think Azan will join his party if they are able to slap him out of his drunken stupor. I'm not sure if they'll be attacked on the boat, or whether they'll just skip ahead to them running ashore at Elfhelm.

No local translators here at MH yet; but Evil Genius usually scanlates the chapters fast anyway. If there is any translators here that would like to do scripts for any scanlation groups and wish to post them in public go for it.

I'm hopeful that a R/T/S thread might stir more interest in Berserk here.

I had predicted in another thread that we would miss the entire battle but it looks like that's not going to be the case. Good idea about a battle between Griffith and Ganishka incoming though, I hadn't thought of that possibility.

Thanks a lot WR and AB. Seems like it's going to be a battle where the Kushan army will totally devastate the opponents. And what's better is that the art is probably going to be t3h love. Griffith's army might come and help against the Kushan though, else the whole battle will be pointless, seeing that the Kushans are a hundred times stronger than normal humans.

The art for this chapter was just amazing!!! I think that from all the mangas i'v read, berserk has the best art! <3 You can see it took so much time to draw all of it.. Huge battles takes lots of efforts to draw..

You can tell that Griffith is the leader of the neo hawks. Just like in the old days of the band of the hawk, Griffith came up with a genius plan for the battle, making Irvine, the coolest apostle, target Generals to create disorder in the huge army while Rakshas is turning the Kushan's strongest attack power against them...the elephants. Just two apostles did so much because their abilities were utilized in the best possible way and they have just started...damn you Griffith.
Apostles,who are usually so cocky depending on brute force, are acting as an organized army...that is scary.

I still don't get why Kushans were jumping in the moat, any body have any idea?
And the chapter ends with horsemen coming out of shi wrecks, who could they be?

After the Kushan army turned into a mess, the lancers, lead by Lucas, will engage to finish them off. The Kushan sorcerers and Salat will take part. Zodd and Grunbled will be busting Kushans in volumes....it will be while before Ganishka steps in.

Of all the demons for Guts to fight that ranged Robin Hood type is gonna be the most difficult for him to handle, one hit can kill it looks like. Im not sure how guts is even going to get to griffith at this point. Too many of them are just beyond him. The berserk armor will eventually kill him unless he gains some sort of protection in Elfeihm.

It appears that Rakshas hit the elephant in the ear with some sort of dart. Whatever was in the dart must have been some sort of psychoactive drug to make them lose it, because there is definitely a delayed reaction there.

Besides the fact that Ganishka(the Kushan Emperor) is a magician who can turn his body into mist, he is sitting in the "rolling fortress" that was shown in episode 279.

I don't know about the jumping kushan soldiers I think it's some thing different because the Kushan leaders who remained were shocked from thier soldiers behavior

From a closer look at the horsemen in the end, they might be the Hawk lancers (who are lead by apostle Lucas). So I guess you're right

It's Locus, not Lucas. But the arms looks more like Griffiths imo.

And younzo is right... Irvine shot the leaders of the cavalry so that the riders in the back would push the frontlines into the moat due to the lack of a command to stop.
It's exactly what the Kushans did with their raid in the night before... destroy the chain of command and throw the enemy out of order.

.....dude don't get me started on the name because do you know how much japanese could mean in english and plus nobody but the creator knows how it's acutally spelled in english because by saying his name it sounds like "Gutz" by the way it's said in japanese and put on paper is "Gutsu"(Z coming from the Z like sound if you say Gutsu really fast) and yeah it's understandable if his name is "Guts" in english(what the anime and manga dubs say) and with the sounds of S, Z and SU sounding all the same it could be anyway you want it showing all reasons why in the Scanlations and fan subs of berserk have all atleast had many eps or chapters with one name or the other kind of like Butz from FF and how he was later renamed (like puck-man to pac man) to "Bartz". And just like Guts or Gutz it can be spelled Casca or Caska(Haven't seen "Casca "said in anime and the manga it usually says Caska).

Anyway the Vatican will still see there foolish ways as the right ones and turned to Griffith thinking he's the hawk of light that will bring salvation. Guts problay will make an appearance since he hasn't in two chapters and so will Caska(refuse to use the c instend of k) and Pedo undertones between the witch and the berserker

First off, the original romanization of Guts' name was Gatsu or Gattsu, since the short "a" vowel in japanese sounds like our short "u" vowel as well as our short "a" vowel. As far as I know, Gutz was never considered a correct romanization of Guts' name and neither was Gutsu. I believe the word Gutsu would sound more like "goo-ts".

Okay, I checked around for interviews and info about the name by Miura's interview's that his name is guts and direct translation of his name from his characters that make up his japanese name is Gattsu(please no I told you so or anything just get back on topic).

Why? I haven't seen any evidence that Guts feels that way. Heck, we don't have too much evidence that Guts has any feelings, lol :p

Why should this be unmatching? The battle now and Guts defeating the wizard(ganishka) is all part of the same fight over Vulitanis.
And it is not Midland that's been attacked... it's the holy seas allied forces.

It strikes me that this topic went way off and the predictions weren't much to begin with? So i'll just throw in my 2c. Guts and company will make it to the ship and get underway, the chp will focus more on the battle between the allies (running scared) the Kusk's and the band of the hawk, with the hawks either beginning the battle or having it end with them perched on some hill with griffith gazing over his soon to be victorious blood stained land.

OK, but when we last saw Guts and company they were practically at the ship. Remember how they were on the rowboat with the ship in front of them. Unless Miura intends for there to be more enemies to fight before they arrive at Elfhelm, it's sort of a waste of time to just show the party setting sail. My ideal situation would for them to arrive at some sort of landmass that is near Elfhelm.

I don't think it will becuase the Pope himself believes in Griffith as a savior. You know if Griffith is declared to be the Hawk of Light then every thing will be easy for him, heck he might even unite all countries and rule them.

After killing the kushan soldsiers like if they were ants and Grunblem and his giants taking each elephant down with one blow, I think it's time for Ganishka to take part in the battle which might be in the next chapter.
Edit: I expect Griffith to face Ganishka in the next chapter and to finish the Kushan King off in one after...it won't be a long battle because Griffith won't struggle against Ganishka at all...as a matter of fact I expect it to be a swift victory

I think we might get a glimpse of the pop too.. He went to meet Griffith and we still don't know what happend. Sonia and Mule suppose to be with him too.

I think we gonna see some special demon-beasts that the emperror prepard but still the band of the hawks will own. No apostle will go monster form, coz it will scare the people, and Griffith wants the people to "worship" and honor him, not fear him. :P

Well. Gutts is strong. Gonna get stronger too.. He got his lil traveling/fighting party which gets only better and better (and now they also have Azan (probably) which might join them too..). He'll eventually open his own band with all those ppl :P ;)

The archer apostle is really cool. I just watched every impact of his arrow with such a sadistic delight! =D Fabolous art by Miura! Not to mention since we had a 3 months break, he just releases every chapter like a week and a half after each other.

OMG finally Griffith v Ganishka I knew it and was waiting for it. No one can take Ganishka down but Griffith. For the first time ever Ganishka shows such a terrified face!! The conversation sounds very interesting between them, I wonder what Griffith was saying to Ganishka to make him sweat like that

and Salat is there watching them, I think he might end up joining Griffith.

I think there will be a fight between the two of them, but not for long, because then Silat (the bakiraka guy at the window) will jump in and save Ganishka with some trick, to free his clan of their debt to Ganishka.

Very unlikely... Guts and company are leaving for sure, if they aren't already out of reach for noticing that such a huge battle has started there.
Guts has stated rather clearly thet he's not interested in "quarrels between monsters".
He knew from his talk with Zodd that Griffith would most likely be there and later on the boat he even could get a glimpse on Griff himself... if the group were to stay in Vulitanis because of that, it would already have been decided back then.

Fighting an elemental of Femto's caliber will be too unwise unless Femto intentionally decides to block their path and there is no escape but fight.

yeah, but a little explanation of ones opinion can help others to understand it better.

I think this is the most exciting episode since the break... it's simply the climax of the whole Kushan invasion that started 15 volumes ago... and also we're likely to get a glimpse at Griffiths powers that have been a mystery ever since he was reborn.
Though I doubt we'll se a real "fight" when Griffith almost got Ganishka to bow down before him just by raising his hand.
I'd rather guess thet Griff beats him an a way that'll show us what kind of overwhelming spiritual entity he is now.

Berserk is supposed to be a bimonthly series. The last four chapters have been this way (280-283). However, sometimes Miura-sama takes breaks for whatever reason. I believe Miura draws every chapter by hand, by himself so you can see where it is tiring. The break between 279-280 was on of the longest ones he's taken though. Episode 279 came out in September 2006, and 280 didn't come out until last month.

The break between 279 and 280 was taken with Miura sitting there and hand drawing every single soldier in every single frame of the battle. As you can imagine, that takes time.

Actually he does almost everything by himself.
Miura states in interviews that he doesn't get very much sunlight and is only able to follow the world affairs by recording the news while he is sleeping.
It's a little creepy way of life... but as long as such a masterpiece is made from it, I won't call amnesty international in.


About the chapter:

Griffith seems to spare Ganishkas life for a final showdown at Wyndham.
Now that was unexpected from my side...

But I guess that can be considered as an excuse for displacing the final battle to Wyndham, where the throne that Griffith wants to accede is located.
So there's no alliance at all.
But I bet that Ganishka won't have his tail between his legs for too long. The battle in Wyndham will most likely be a little harder than the surprise-assault that Griffith pulled off this time, since Ganishkas fog has already taken over the city and the familiars are everywhere.
Of course those croc-, elephant- and tiger-familiars or the daka can't compete with the battle power of an apostle, but I bet they will have an influence on the battle, depending on how numerous they are.

I also have to agree with your notion that it must be some sort of PR "stun" for Griffith to stretch this confrontation out longer. It would look much better for Griffith if he marched into Wyndham and destroyed the Kushan influence at it's root.

OK, but when we last saw Guts and company they were practically at the ship. Remember how they were on the rowboat with the ship in front of them. Unless Miura intends for there to be more enemies to fight before they arrive at Elfhelm, it's sort of a waste of time to just show the party setting sail. My ideal situation would for them to arrive at some sort of landmass that is near Elfhelm.

As Griffith arrives in front of the ramparts, soldiers comments on how beautiful a knight he is. Owen says he's definitely the old Griffith, hero of Midland, etc, and that he looks untouchable. Vandimion introduces himself very politely (not surprising), asks what country Griffith's army represents. Griff says they're the band of the hawks, Midland's liberation army, recruited directly by the royal family (like some kind of personal army or something). Some guy ironizes that "just one division of knights can be a liberation army?" And tells Griffith it's just big talk, to which Griff replies that they're currently the only regular army of Midland. On that note Midland's nobles come into play. Griff is literally like "long time no see" while the bald guy voices his surprise that the White Hawk is really still alive. He asks him to take back his words, tells him that he's just a commoner, etc. That traditionally, Midland's army has been controlled by the nobles. Then Locus intervenes and says it's odd, asks whether they have ever fought any battle against the Kushans. He points out that a country's army should protect their people during rough times, and that these guys didn't perform their duties. The bearded guy starts mouthing off and says they don't know where charlotte is, then that Griffith is a criminal. He's interrupted by Charlotte herself who tells him he's wrong. She mentions her full name (Charlotte Beatrix Marie "Ruhodi" (Lerody?) Wyndham), and declares as the princess of Midland that Lord Griffith, her fiancé, is the commander of Midland's armies.

I loved the chapter even though the review didn't looked boring...how the nobles resented Griffith's demand, Locus embarrassing the nobles then Charlotte appearing and all nobles bowing to her...good on you Miura sensie.

I now understand why Griffith let the Kushan king go. If Griffith is the supreme commander of the army and beats the Kushan king in the capital of Midland then no one will ever dare to oppose him marrying Charlotte and becoming king....then a true age of horror shall decend upon humans.

i recently read Death Note, and Carlotte and Griffith's relationship reminds me a lot of Misa and Light. She has the power, and loves him to the death, making him use her like the ultimate pawn.

yeah, but griffith does it more subtle. any girl with a brain would say goodbye to an egocentric megalomaniac like raito(i refuse calling him "light"), if she was treated like misa. griffith at least makes a good show in caring about charlotte.


Why did the anime only showed the first half of the manga?

by the time the anime was produced, the story of the manga hadn't progressed much further.
the anime was first aired in october '97... that's between the original releases of volume 14 and 15.
and concidering the events they didn't show in the anime, it's more like it showed 1/3 of the current story.

Azan seems to have quite a fanbase...either that or i keep seeing the same people mention him.

In any case I doubt Azan would join Guts, not saying that he would oppose them. But Azan will just travel around dealing with weaker monsters and helping out people in towns.

I seriously hope that the next time Guts' party is shown they are already at Elfhelm, it's already dragged on long enough to get to the damn place.

Oh and just a wild guess but I'm willing to bet there are stronger elves at that place, such as king of elves, that might be strong enough to actually cure Caska of her retardation.

the only way i can see gutz and co being in the next chapter in the middle of the sea is as a bit of comic relief with azan waking up. otherwise i think it will either be them arriving at the island or more of griffith.

although it could also be a combination of all of those ideas:D

I mean...... this is another crappy episode!!!! I know that all is going to concetrate into a very great final battle, or whatever i don't know..... But there had been too many boring-empty-annoing episodes! Where is the amazing line of the beginning? I started reading it from the very beginning in Italy many years ago, and now i'm a little pissed off. I won't stop reading it, i'm too curious about Guts, but my admiration is slowly fading.

Just now that i felt like the old good times with the last few battle-chapter. I falled in love with this manga once, and now i feel like i've been betrayed somehow....

I don't know Patrick. He used so many chapters on the action you fell in love with and most of it was monster rape. I really think a calming episode wouldn't hurt, although I can understand your frustration. Point is, you really can't expect every episode (or every second or third) to be fast-paced. That would just make it a seinen version of DBZ.

Anyway, from the first half of the story i took out not only the fightin' part, and actually is the other one which i miss the most. Could it be that i liked too much the first comrades of Guts? I don't think that this episode is crappy or w/e. It's still untranslated. But from just looking at it I do feel a bit dissapointment. Not because the lack of battle, and not because it's a "calm" episode. It just frustrates me that I had to wait almost 2 months for 21 pages which doesnt show really a progress in the story, and although their art is excellent as always (Miura is a genious!), I just don't understand why it took him almost 2 months. :(
Reading any manga, doesnt matter how good it is, with those huge time gaps between each chapter, like we had this year, is very frustrating and a real "turn off".

Agreed! This is a great opportunity to Farnese to finally become a character that I (as an addicted reader) can be proud of. Though considering Casca, she might just be excited because of a dolphin, not necessarily anything major.
