Creators interview:
Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, the creators of “Avatar: the Last Airbender” are readying the next chapter in the animated saga, titled “The Last Airbender: Legend of Korra.” The new series is due out mid-2012 on Nickelodeon.

“Avatar” and “Korra” take place in a setting that feels as richly imagined as Middle-earth, Narnia or Hogwarts. In this world, some inhabitants are “benders,” each with the power to manipulate one of the elements–air, fire, earth or water–to their will. One person, the Avatar, has the ability to master all the elements–and thus bring balance to the land.

“This one is 70 years into the future and takes all the elements of bending from the first series and evolves it and takes it one step further,” Cyma Zarghami, President of the Nickelodeon/MTVN Kids and Family Group, said of “Korra.”

Nickelodeon had picked up “Korra” for 12 episodes but recently decided to order 14 more shows. “When we first starting talking to Nickelodeon about doing a new series in the ‘Avatar’ world, they asked if we could do shorter arcs—more like a show like ‘24’where there’s a specific villain or challenge for that particular season,” Konietzko says. “We’re really happy with that number. It allows us to focus much more closely on each episode and get a lot more craft into it.”

Speakeasy talked to DiMartino and Konietzko about the follow-up series and what fans can expect.

“We have a lot of ideas for the ‘Avatar’ universe and who knows? We could be tapping into them for years to come,” Konietzko says.

The Wall Street Journal: How far along are you on the new series?

Michael DiMartino: We are in the midst of the first twelve episodes. We’ve written all the episodes. Episodes have shipped to the overseas animations studios and they’re animating away as we speak. So we’re kind of in the middle of things right now…All the vocal cast has been picked and recorded and all the scripts have been recorded.

Are you looking to win new viewers with the series or just satisfy fans of the old series who have grown up?

DiMartino: We want everyone to watch. Definitely fans of the first series will not be disappointed in this one. The tone is a little older, the characters are a little older than the first series—they’re teenagers. Korra is 16 so she’s older than Aang was. So I think maybe some people who weren’t into the first show might find this one and be into it.

Since the main characters are older, will there be more romance?

Bryan Konietzko: I thought Korra was 17 so Mike and I have to get our stories straight. The main characters are in their late teens, we’ve always loved those kind of teen love triangle type stories and there was plenty of that in the original series. We’re definitely getting into it in this series. The difference is these people have cars and motorcycles and things. There’s definitely a different dynamic. I’d say the show is more sophisticated than the original series but it has the same balance of tones we’ve always liked with humor, action, drama, scary stuff and romance.

Will characters from the first series show up in “Korra”?

Konietzko: Again it’s 70 years later so they’ll appear in various ways perhaps.

DiMartino: There is definitely a link to the old series and the old characters.

How did you change the look of the “Airbender” world?

Konietzko: In every way we’re trying to improve it. We’re not trying to change it so much that it’s unrecognizable and doesn’t feel like the same universe, but we are trying to update it, improve it, make everything just more sophisticated and appealing….It’s kind of like the show has grown up. A lot of the viewers have grown up since the show was last on.

Tell me about the heroine of the story, Korra. What’s she like?

DiMartino: Korra, we kind of describe her as a fiery waterbender. She’s very pugnacious. Kind of in your face. We wanted to create a new Avatar that was completely the opposite of Aang. So, whereas Aang was the peaceful, nomadic Airbender guy, she’s very tough, very headstrong, not scared to get into a fight, and kind of picks fights with people too sometimes. So she’s definitely totally the opposite of Aang so it has been kind of fun to write her character and put her in situations that Aang never would have gotten into.

Konietzko: It’s refreshing it’s totally different from Aang. But she’s also funny and has a lot of charm and vulnerability because she’s still growing up and trying to figure things out. We worked on that first series for more than six years and we love those characters but it’s great to be working with fresh ones with a new spin on the world.

Who is the main villain in Korra?

DiMartino: We have a great villain. He’s kind of an anti-bending revolutionary guy. Very scary dude. And definitely is quite a challenge for Korra.

Will you ever make a feature animated film?

Konietzko: On the original series we did our best to make it cinematic with a big immersive world. And on this series because it’s a tighter stretch of episodes–just 12 episodes–but Mike and I wrote all of them, there’s really no filler. We told almost as much story as the first series packed into these 12. So it’s getting even closer to something cinematic. So yeah, we would love to. We feel like we’re kind of movie guys working in TV. So we’re looking forward to that day when we get to work in that medium.

Have you heard anything about whether there will be a sequel to the “Last Airbender” live-action feature film?

DiMartino: Uh, no. It’s definitely not up to us, so.

Will we find out what happened to Zuko’s mom?

DiMartino: That question will be answered in some way, but not necessarily in the show. That’s all I’ll say.

Mhmmm, thank you for posting. I'm going to order the Avatar: The Last Airbender series off of Netflix and re-watch it before Korra comes out if I can manage. I'm looking forward to this mini series and hope that it has just as much substance as its predecessor.

I was ecstatic when I first caught wind of the new Avatar spin-off sometime last July. Hell, I ended up rewatching the whole The Last Airbender series because of such wicked news. And while Nickelodeon pushed back its release date to next summer (here’s hoping), an extra fourteen episodes is well worth the wait. Even if each episode is twenty-two minutes in length, that’s what? -- nine and a half hours of element-bending action, comedy, and solid drama.

The fact that Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko are writing all of the episodes is icing on the cake. No silly, out-of-character episodes like what happened in Avatar Day. Someone deserves to be slapped over the head with the damned storyboard for that one.

I also love that the main character is female. Yay! A fierce female who suddenly won’t forget how to handle herself or the situation whenever a guy enters a scene (like so many other dramatic action series). Please don’t disappoint me Korra. <3

Amon and the Equalist organization I’m already fond of, despite general lack of information concerning them. First impression wise, I can understand why some characters would loath the existence of bending, and thus wanting to end its practice. Undoubtedly there could be other motivations revealed later on, but I’m thankful for villains that I can, so far, empathize with and stand behind their methods of rationality.

Hmm, Mako is some nice eye-candy too. Hur Hur. >:3

The Track Team is returning, describing the new music as "the roaring '20s with an Asian twist". I’m flabbergasted by that statement, yet I really want to listen to it.

I think it's was really awesome of the creators to name one of main characters Mako in honor of the Va that played Iroh who passed a way after season 2. Cant wait to see Korra go avatar state wander if she will have any contact with Ang's spirit.

They're going to great lengths to improve the choreography of the fights even more for this series it seems. As the main enemy seems to be non benders who obviously have to fight with their fists, they've taken a lot of MMA and other techniques. It'll be pretty interesting to watch, I expect the fights to be exciting. Not to mention there's only 20 or so episodes so the pacing of every episode should be good. Lots of action in each.

O_O Please tell me they're going to redo Aang's and Katara's grownup form. XD Sorry, but they look so unnatural.
Hmm...Korra seems BA and it looks good, but I'm uneasy about sequels....:/ I'm afraid it'll take away from the original series, plus I'm not that eager to see the grown-up forms of Aang and co. -_-;; Well, at least they solved the problem of the Last Airbender...although Korra isn't the last Airbender anymore....

Grown up forms? Re-do? Aang and co are not even showed in the sequel, as 70 years have passed they are all dead. The airbender you saw in that picture is his third son, the new last airbender named Tenzin and his water tribe wife. He will be teaching the new Avatar (Korra) airbending, as she has already mastered the other 3 elements.

Has anyone heard anything recently about The Legend of Korra?

I don't follow any forums over it or anything, so this is the only place I would really go to get information. I didn't see any new trailers or anything like that, but if someone finds one, please post it!

Okay, while it officially starts on April 14th, two episodes have already leaked. Thus I decided to give a thread a pump.

First episode was strong, I really enjoyed it. The old Avatar feel is there, but still also feels new and fresh. I sure miss the old cast, but the new characters seem interesting. I especially like Aangs son Tenzin. Beginning of the first episode was impressive and fun.

Imho second episode showcased Kataras negative character traits bit too much. Also new characters who I asume to be the rest of the main group did not yet win me over. Also the possible romance picture felt bit over glued. Still non the less entertaining ep. Not bad.

Katara is nice foil to Aang. Even after being rather annoying ADHD teen in ep 2, the end smoothed things a little and I do think she'll be a great lead character.

Indeed, her headstrong and naive character leaves lots of room for great character development. That's exactly what i love to see! Pulling my hair out waiting for the 3rd episode here!!!!

Damn, I was wondering how Amon would compete with the likes of Ozai and Azula as a main villain, and I have to say his ability dispel any doubts. I can't wait to learn more about whatever spirits gave him his power and are against the Avatar's existences. And Korra teaming up with Mako was awesome.

Last episode was amazing...very interested in the background of this villain...and funny how both Mako and Amon share similarities in their past(family killed by a firebender)...

It's an amazing series until now...I love every character and the vibe of the villain is really cool...

Not only Amon, but I were iffy about non-bending Equalists as baddies in the first place. But this episode dispeled all my fears. This works great, and Amon is intriguing. I guess one reasons for that is, that I can understand their feelings to certain extent.

The action scenes looked very good on this episode.

I'm the only one thinking that Amon is the third son of Aang? Not Tenzin, his other brother who is a non-bender I mean.
Don't know why, but somehow it's the only explanation I could figure for knowing how to soul-bend.

Or maybe He was the one who thought Amon that technique.

But he'd already told the story about his past and how he came to wear the mask and what happened to his family, so I don't think it's that. Unless he is lying, but I just can't think HOW it's possible for anyone besides the avatar to spirit bend.

Technically, we were told that all humans could energybend, before they were taught the individual types of bending and forgot it. But it really doesn't seem like he's energybending given how different it looked from when Aang did it and him touching different areas on the body.

Hey, maybe Koh the face stealer taught Amon how to energy bend so that he could get back at the avatar for trying to kill him like 900 years ago. :D

Ustegius
April 28, 2012, 01:01 PM
Ah I was already considering brainwashed lion turtle, but atleast Koh would make a bit more sense. Or even Amon being Aangs son does. The lie about face burned by firebender would cover two things: justify the deeds for followers and hide the fact that he is related to former Avatar. I mean, hard to appear as serious anti-bender if related to the most famous Bender.

Though for some reason I have a feeling this might be something completly other than energy bending.

Tarrlok was just like a politician. Love how he basically manipulated Korra into joining the task force. And the Mako/Asami shipping was great. Anyway, it was interesting to learn that Amon doesn't want to risk making Korra into a martyr. And it was great seeing the adult Toph, Sokka, and Aang.

First, Bolin is ADORABLE. I want him to be with Korra instead of Mako, actually. So Sato can keep him if she wants.

And Amon is surely fearsome. I like him.

The flashback seems like it took place around the time Yakone threaten the city, so it's possible that he may have some connection to Amon and/or the Equalists, which is why she saw the memory and thought Tenzin was Aang afterwards.

I was almost sure Korra would lose her bending and have to learn everything all over again. Cuse I think even if Amon can take away her bending it's impossible to take away the avatar's bending permanently.

But I'm happy they didn't go that way cuse it would be kinda boring seeing her having to learn everything again.

Damn can't wait for her to learn Airbending quickly cuse airbending is the coolest one of all bendings.

Those are the memories of either Aang, or maybe Amon is just very ancient and somehow preserved his life so they are his memories...but if Korra was seeing those than they are Aang's memories, which means that she is very close to enter the Avatar state...

I wonder what triggered that though...seems like it was the pressure points that Amon hit...it was like when Aang fought Ozai...he got his body bumped by a rock in a certain point and he instantly entered the avatar state

I'm more suspicious of Asami...she smells of Amon and his Equalists...good ol' Saito is just a businessman, or at least the first looks don't give anything away...though I wouldn't be surprised if he were to be coerced into a shady deal somehow...I mean technology is the thing that will replace bending, so his company is sort of the future of the world

Honestly, I hope Amon isn't Tenzen's brother because that's just too much connectivity and would feel forced. I hope he is somehow connected to characters we are already familiar with but someone who has not been named or seen. Seems more realistic that way (I know, I know, cartoon).

I recently read an interesting theory at the coments on a streaming site... the guy suggested that Korra and Amon might be two reincarnations of the Avatar, cuse remember when Zuko's sister almost killed Aang and Katara cured him, he lost connection with the spiritual world there but could regain it later. Basically the guys was suposing that the avatar spirit had died at that moment and when Aang regained his spiritual connection he created another avatar spirit, or maybe it was divided in two when he almost died, so there where 2 avatars spirits inside him and after he died two avatars were reborn one with spiritual bending and one with elements bending.

That would explain why Amon can take away bending and why we have never seen Korra enter avatar state even when her life was threatened by Amon last episode.

We have then two hypothesis Aang created a new avatar spirit and it reincarnated at the exact moment Zuko's sister hit him and then Amon is older than Korra and has apeared in the past or the spirit was simply divided and Amon was incarnated at the same time as Korra.

Well this might bot be true but it's a pretty interesting theory.

Really liked the last episode, the fight sequences on top of the arena were really well done. We got a bit more of flashback with Aang, Toph and what seemed to be a relative(maybe father) of Tarrlock, it seemed to me that Amon may be related to that somehow.

This spinoff has turned out to be absolutely stunning. I've really like it so far, but Episode 6 was what really did it for me. Despite its untoppable predecessor, The Legend of Korra holds its own. The entire last half of the episode had me on edge!

Watching Lin and Korra tag teaming was great, and it's nice to see Korra handle the Equalist better then previous encounters. I have to say it was a surprise to see the Fire ferrets lose, though considering later events it did make sense. Amon is turning into a awesome terrorist, especially now that benders and their supporters have witness first hand his power, as oppose to before when only witness mostly by his followers. Given the introduction of their technology to grant regular people the strength of chi-blockers, I can't help to think that the theories that Asami and her father are connected to the Equalist may turn out to be true.

But the absolute best part of the episode was the announcer.

Well this episode was filled with the unexpected. The racing was cool and I like how Lin has become more trusting towards Korra. Turns out I was wrong in thinking that Asami was secretly an Equalist. But the way they did the scene between her and her father was wonderfully dramatic, not to mention how cool she was taking down that lieutenant with ease. And I liked the little throwback to the cabbage guy. So it seems as if Asami will become the non-bender of the group, and hopefully give Korra and the guys some pointers in hand to hand. Also can't wait to see Lin start acting outside the law.

I just learned that the is also an Avatar comic called The Promise, first part was out in January and second soon. It's was co-created by the creators of the show and takes place one year after The Last Airbender, and turns out to be the birth story of Republic City. Just...WOW. I was amazed.
My reaction the whole chapter:

I've to admit that this new series has something that did not had the first one: Mystery. It's actually quite good at creating suspense and the story is flowing really good. The flashbacks are great. I want to know more :O

And as you can see...That guys has his hands tight. I'm not an expert, but you can't bloodbend a WHOLE ROOM without moving a bit yourself. So, there is many people involved in this or some crazy spirit around.

An interesting analysis of the flashbacks (http://birdbrainblue.tumblr.com/post/24281699688/an-analysis-of-the-flashbacks). Would explain alot if Tarrlok and Yakone are connected.

Solid and well explained theory. I had already guessed that Tarlok was Yakone's son, and after last episode I had thought about the bloodbending and where Tarlok is taking Korra( some place meaningful to him).

The last episode was the best of the season so far. Tarrlock could arguably is the strongest water bender that was in the avatar universe. The fight between him and Korra was awesome. I starting to like his character more. Because people already knew he will be a villain as some point, but before this episode, he was a meh villain.

Wow, this season is so short compare to Avatar the Last airbender season 1. I really like Tarrlok's short time as a villain, but he is so much cooler than Amon. So yeah, I really hope somehow Tarrlok didn't really lose his bending but >___< Tarrlok was possibly one of the strongest if not the top 3 or 4 strongest bender.

Rikudou King
June 09, 2012, 01:48 PM
Don't forget, originally there were only gonna be the 12 episodes before they were granted more by Nick, which is why events are going by pretty fast.

Anyway, was great to see what finally went down between Aang and Yakone, and while Tarrlok losing his bending to Amon was expected, didn't think Amon would be able to endure/counter bloodbending. Just one more unique ability of Amon. And I'm starting to feel for Asami.

Just a random thought. The first book is called Air, as Korra has Air bending left to master. However, the second book has no name yet. She has mastered the 4 elements by then (asumgly). Some speculate the second book would be something like metal or even blood. But, what if Amon indeed does take Korras bending away? Then the name could be something like Bending (regaining it) or *insert whatever the name of Amons skill is*, learning to do whatever it is Amon does.

Other guesses at the name of the book: Energy, Avatar (state). Though might be they didn't think it that far, it was originally supposed to be one season. (or so I thought)

weixiaobao
June 09, 2012, 03:45 PM
That wasn't a random thought. It tied perfectly with the seasons. The show began with winter (water), spring (earth), summer (fire). Korra began with autumn transition into winter (air), so just like that the next season would be water again.

It already an established circle, I hope they don't go to something stupid like blood (water) or metal (earth) as a season. The world isn't necessarily explore as of yet in Korra time. I don't mind revisiting the different nations, though. And who know, maybe Korra was meant to have only one season >___< urgggghhhh

Ustegius
June 09, 2012, 03:50 PM
Actually indeed, it would be interesting if the second book was named Water. Following the cycle and representing that Korra starts from a scratch after losing bending. Though Somehow I really doubt she will lose it.

weixiaobao

I always thought Amon would take away korra's bending and make republic city his. I think it might happen next chapter that would mean team avatar would live as fugitives during next season while korra tries to regain her bending. It would be kinda similar to Aang's adventure around the world.

Also while Korra travels the world she will have to figure out how to give back people's bending and how to solve this whole mess and make people who sympathize with equalists accept her without coming out as the bad girl in the story.

What is in the end everybody becomes a bender? That way there wouldn't be discrimination.

goldb
June 10, 2012, 05:36 AM
Reverse energy bending?

I really enjoyed the episode and can't wait for next the hour finale in 2 weeks.

I was quite sure that Yakone had other accomplices that freed him from his trial but he actually just bent the whole tribunal and nearly killed Aang if it wasn't for the defense mechanism in the avatar state.

This episode has really showed how far bending has come from Aang's time to now, if it wasn't obvious already; all the sub-bending forms being used so easily(metal, lightning, which also raises the question that we haven't seen a sub bending form for airbending yet...) and that justifies Tarrlock and Yakone being able to bloodbend multiple opponents simultaneously.

How badass is Amon really? being able to resist passed even bloodbending?

And Mako is a jerk, we knew he liked both Korra and Asami but acting rash and so emotional when you already have a girlfriend and in her presence....like weixai said this may push Asami over the edge and in her emotional state run to the Equalists and join her father.

Uriel
June 10, 2012, 07:42 AM
She wont join the equalist, I'm sure of that. But this will be trouble and some confrontation.

And I always wondered WHAT could be the sub-bending of air and I can never figure out something that it's PROPER of air.

Rikudou King
June 10, 2012, 10:03 AM
What is in the end everybody becomes a bender? That way there wouldn't be discrimination. That actually seems like it would make things worst, because while Amon and his Equalist tend to skip over it, benders too have suffered just as much at the hands of other benders. More so when you factor in the airbender genocide and devastation done to the southern waterbenders.

While it could have been better, that finale was still amazing and full of surprises. I love how Iroh was a one-man air force, the conclusion with Asami and her father, and Amon's backstory. Tarrlok's murder-suicide and the implication of Korra contemplating suicide was shocking. Wasn't expecting any of that. Also fount it hilarious how the shipping drama took a larger portion of the finale then the actual action.

My only issue with it was how Korra met Aang and got the Avatar state after everything was finished. I wish she would have gained it during a longer battle with Amon in front of the public, which would have been a much better conclusion. But it's clear most of the problems was due to them working under the belief of it being a standalone season. I can't wait to see what happens in season two.

So there's going to be a second season? Hmmm nice. Right now everything seems to have end well. I liked the history about Tarlock's childhood ... still kinda strange no one knew about the escape of Yukon's ... based at this end i don't really see what can happen at season 2. Maybe Amon survived ...
And Avatar contemplated suicide? I don't think so ... at least i didn't get that perception ... i also can't wait for what is going to happen next.
I also wonder what will happen with Asami ... right now it seems that her relationship with Mako is pretty much over but still ...

Okay, I liked the season finale a lot. There were some negatives there too though. Makorra stuff still felt a bit too forced for me. I also question a bit Amons story, I mean both brothers hated the father, yet both ended up doing what he wanted... Well guess it is possible. I liked Tarloks final choice though. Quite dramatic that was. Also Korra getting her bending back from past Avatars was bit too deus ex for me. As for Korra suicide - I didn't see it. Everytime a person goes to a cliff it doesn't mean she/he means to jump down... Atleast I didn't get that feeling at all.

Action was cool though, quite epic. Iroh, Korra, Tenzin and Naga were kick-ass. Espeacially Naga was a fun suprise. The hobo guy also turned out to be a fun mior character. And the over all feeling was good and quite impressive. The ending made it quite clear though, that they initially did the work 1 season in mind, and the fact that Nick gave another came too late or as a complete suprise.

Bumi seems awesome. I wanna see more of him on season 2. As for thoughts on what will be going on that season... I don't know, propably a completly new story arc, as I don't atleast now see any loose ends or foreshadows. Korra mastering air, some kinda official break up between Asami and Mako, more on Zukos and Aangs offspring maybe. Or maybe about Aangs death. As for now, only official info is that on an interview the showrunners said that about half of season 2 will happen in Republic city and half else where.

The tears man, the tears. A single tear falling while standing at the edge of a cliff and Aang's comment about lowest point seems to hint at her contemplating it, even if she likely wouldn't have gone through. Makes sense given that bending and being the Avatar was literally her whole self since she was little. At least that's what a few of us believe.

And Amon is likely dead for good. Between him showing the ability to feel where people are and that tear he shed right before, it seems like he knew what Tarrlok was doing and accepted it. Besides, that explosion cause a huge mushroom cloud. Doubt even a barrier of ice would have blocked that and I can't remember any example of the writers faking us out with a death before.

I mean...
I loved it. Every single it. And it's not deux machina, it was something that everyone kinda hoped. The avatar has the knowledge of many avatars and Aang particularly knows a lot about soul-bending. So I was expecting something like this. Although when they said it was done by Bloodbending I instantly thought that the solution was inside the damages caused in the brain. Or whatever the bending thing is located in one's body. But seemed logical.

And BUMI!I freaking love him. He's awesome.

And well, the whole story makes sense now. Amon being waterbender has sense since Aang was trying to tell Korra that since the beginning, but we got confused by Tarlock being there as well.

I liked the episode, but it seemed rushed to me. Korra lost her bending and then got it back so quickly and the Mako x Korra thing felt rushed too. It seems like they shoved to much into the final episode. I think it would have been a great cliffhanger if she didn't get her bending back until the next season. Because, what is next? is Amon really dead? What else does Korra have to do other than give everyone their bending back?

I also wasn't expecting Amon to be defeated so quickly (unless he comes back next season). It was pretty cool the way that Tarlock blew Amon and himself up though, it was very dramatic.

when they said it was done by Bloodbending I instantly thought that the solution was inside the damages caused in the brain. Or whatever the bending thing is located in one's body. But seemed logical.
It must be something like that. Like Chi blocking but more severe and permanent. It might sever or block something in the brain or the nerves to make the person unable to bend. And maybe it is different for each element and that is why Korra was still able to Airbend because Amon didn't block that part of her.

Ah, if you but it that way, it makes sense. That much I figured, that the blood bending blocking the ability to bend is quite possible. It just tends to slip me that these Avatars are not just some sort of spirits or projections, but more like a memory bank within the living Avatar. In a sense Korra healed herself. Or not really, but kinda yes, but no.

And yeah, I noted the tears Tears falling down a cliff. I just took it as Korra wanted to be alone, not to cry in front of everyone else. Would have been rather characteristic of her I think. Though indeed if you take Aangs comment in consideration that interpretation does indeed make sense. I rewatched the scene, and I still dont feel it, but quite plausible indeed.

WOAAAAH, I have been utterly mind-blown by the series finale xD maaan i can't wait so long for a second season :scry

I think this series finale was nicely done, asami finally cut all ties with her father, Korra is a step closer to become truly the avatar and amon is a fantastic villian :wtf i absolutely love how Bumi came in xD excellent ending i give it a positive 9 out of 10

I had mentioned that Amon was able to resist Tarrlok because he too could at least waterbend and therefore bloodbend too. I just didn't take that thought far ahead enough, so Amon's sealing of bending being revealed as a result of bloodbending isn't much of a surprise. It's funny though how the truth was in front of us all this time and we couldn't put it together. I had originally come to the conclusion that he could seal people's bending by somehow blocking the chakra holes or something that allowed them bend(something like that), essentially utilising his chi-blocking to maximum potential.

Iroh was so amazing in this finale, single handedly taking out the air force and the way he jets is so cool. Plus all the comedy moments from both Meelo and Bolin.

But Ust...The spirits here are a REAL thing and a serious one. I honestly doubt it's only her memory bank. She's connected to everything, after all. It's not only her memories, but the entity of the Avatar that healed her.

Exactly how I felt-
http://media.tumblr.com/tumblr_m63hp3NC2s1rqbnyj.jpg

And yeah, I noted the tears Tears falling down a cliff. I just took it as Korra wanted to be alone, not to cry in front of everyone else. Would have been rather characteristic of her I think. Though indeed if you take Aangs comment in consideration that interpretation does indeed make sense. I rewatched the scene, and I still dont feel it, but quite plausible indeed. Was probably left ambiguous just for that reason, well that and this being a children's show. A person on another forum pointed out the factor of also creating a new Avatar since she believed she wasn't one anymore.

Would have loved if the pacing was a bit better, like take her powers at the end of ep11 to give some kind of impact.

Hated how Mako cheated on Asami, he could at least cleared up things with her and break up instead of doing as shown in the episode. He was a scumbag at that topic throughout the whole series. :(

WHY?
It was a good. I liked Korra. Aang will be always my favorite Avatar, but still this series has good animation, great plot development, awesome designs and scenery and incredible animation. Without taking in consideration that Bolin does the work of Sokka incredibly well.

Imo, it pales so much in comparison. The characters aren't as likeable, the pace is horrible and the romance is a mess. I just recently re-watched TLA and I can tell you, the difference in quality is striking. The chemistry that Aang and the gang had felt realistic, the characters kept your interest, the dialogue didn't feel forced and the romance was nicely paced and made you smile. Everything that I feel TLK is still lacking. But uh, I certainly do think that the first season of TLK was good in its own right. It was just sorta underwhelming as a sequel to TLA.

Oh, and Bolin isn't half as funny as Sokka. But hey, I'm just speaking for myself here.

ending feels forced , discovering who amon really is , losing bending powers , gaining air bending , amon escaping and might be dead , unlocing spiritual state thing , recovering avatar powers , learning avatar state , kissing love interest and restoring lost bending .. all in 2 eps...

she suddenly became good at air bending out of nowhere... amon could capture tenzin and his kids so easily but lost to the firebender guy and korra and escaping , doesnt make sense lol

It's true Aaangs airbending was playful and juveline, Tenzin is graceful and dignifying, Korra's...welll, she's just blowing things away, it's more agressive and lacks the calm and fun feeling air benders usually have.

News from Comic-con and it all looks great.

Here it is all compiled together by tumblr user dongbufeng (http://dongbufeng.tumblr.com/post/27140645570/all-the-new-info-from-the-korra-comic-con-panel)[/B] and here are photographs of the amazing concept art shown. (http://avatarthelastairbenderonline.com/sdcc-2012-korra-panel-information/)

Here it is. All the new info. It comes from Jenny-SDCC, Matt Patches, and Hypable

All the New Info from the Korra Panel

Book 2 is called “Spirits” and takes place 6 months after Book 1.

Concept art from snowy landscapes at a festival at the Southern Water Tribe.

“The opening scene is at the Southern Water tribe at a festival. There is a cool banquet hall made of ice. They go on a crazy journey through another water tribe and it is a bit dark and scary”

“Korra & co. will travel into the tundra of the Southern Water Tribe. Creepy snowscape with bright green sky.”

“The look harkens back to the iceberg Aang was frozen in. The ice has an otherworldly glow to it.”

“Beautiful Southern Air Temple concept painting. Yellows and oranges. Looks like Lord of the Rings”

Book 2 is “In the thick of animation and design and production, still a very far way to go”

“Opening of Book 2 in a festival in the sourthern water tribe, gentle snow falling, lanterns, circus games, A PAINTING OF A MUCH LARGER SOUTHERN WATER TRIBE!”

Southern Water Tribe has a beautiful banquet hall made of ice

Great landscapes, storms, ominous rock formations

“Mysterious location they’re journeying to in this storm, with cool spooky lighting”, harkens back to the glow Aang’s ice burg had

Naga and Korra exploring the mysterious location

Twisted roots coming out of ice walls

Southern Air Temple all spruced up

Vistas, base of the mountain around the temple, very gentle, “misty kind of Chinese mountains”

Ancient air bender site

SPIRIT WORLD!!!!

Explore the spirits, background, creation of the Avatar

There are some paintings of the Southern Air Temple and the base of the mountain with mist around them.

They will be going into the spirit world as well with 2 very special episodes

Korra will explore the spirit world.

Book 2 will feature episodes that look back at history of Avatar/spirit world.

Asami takes over Sato’s company!

The costumes are similar with elements to compensate for winter. Asame has an Amelia Earhart look. The others have longer selves and winter coats.

Book 2 will feature Bumi as a main character! Same with Kya. Bumi wears pink earmuffs.

Korra was inspired by Gina Carano.

“We’ll meet Unarock, Korra’s uncle. Her whole family is comprised of Bad*sses”

Korra is very similar, longer sleeves, very athletic, Mandarin a-symmetrical top, looks a little meaner

Mako get’s a coat! Still has the scarf

Bolin has an AWESOME green parka

Asami takes over her fathers company, more business attire

STILL A BAD*SS THOUGH, Goggles, and updated racing leathers

Tenzin gets ANOTHER claok

BUMI BUMI BUMI HAS PINK EAR MUFFS, Kya will also appear, Bumi definitely has the same spirit as the old king. Bit of a pot belly since we last saw him

KYA! No dreds, has a half moon necklace, bit of a hippy, FAVORITE SONG IS SECRET TUNNEL, has a special bond with Jinora

The Avatar parents get an update, going to see more of Korra’s parents this season, Korra’s dad was thought of initially to be like a line backer physically

Flashback to Tonnraq in his early 20’s, shirtless XD

Tonnraq brother, “Unolok”??? will be appearing! Very posh, to bring up the relationship between the north and south tribes

His children, twins, kind of creepy, slouched shoulders

Verick???, Howard Hughes, little bit of a playboy guy, Captain of Industry, more humorous, great rapport with Bolin, VERY BRIGHT PURPLE CLOAK, Southern Water Tribe descent

Spirits! shadowy creature? Can’t even describe!

http://25.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_m745f2jWcg1rb8q1fo1_500.jpg

Pro-Bending returns! Fire Ferrets vs. Rhino Lions in an animatics preview. But Mako & Korra aren’t on the team!

Korra airball races Jinora & uses Avatar state to beat her! Tenzin’s pissed

Probending! Fire Ferrets against the —— Lions (missed it), Bolin giving pep talk…to TWO ENTIRELY NEW PLAYERS. Go down as the fastest knockout in probending history XD

Mako is on a fancy bike, chasing…waterbenders past a Wendy’s XD Intense chase scene, and he takes down the truck! “Looks like you had some car trouble, good thing the police are here.”

ASAMI FLYING A PLAIN, Nearly bankrupt because of her father’s reputation, sounds confident, but sercretly worried

Pema being heckled by her three eldest and Korra riding around on air scooters, Korra goes into the Avatar state to win the race, Tenzin overhears, and scolds

Naga barking, weird shadow spirit appears in the distance, attacks Korra, pins her down….fade out

Korra goes Avatar state to fight the creature, into the festival

Amazing motorcycle chase scene b/w #Korra & Mako vs. robbers. Great motorcycle driving effects.

Mako becomes a cop in Book 2. And is ready to sling some great zingers.

So Mako has become a cop, and now Bolin is struggling to find his place in the world. TO BECOME A MAAAAN.

They always imagine Korra’s father is huge even though he is a gentle guy

Kya is a water bender with a hippie look. She has a special bond with Senna

Bumi’s sister will be joining this season.

Verick, a Howard Hughes playboy, kind of character. He and Bolin have a funny relationship. Southern Water tribe member. Also a shipping magnet who is a more entertaining character.

We get to see more of Korra’s parent and meet her uncle "Udalak" who is head of the northern tribe and more in touch with the spirits. He mentors Korra

Andrea Romano is the voice coach and she describes how she gets the cast to understand the animation. She organizes the scenes so the actors to react better and work together.

The spirit creature appears to be evil. The storyboards are really cool. They just told us that Mako becomes a cop in book 2 and Bolin is looking for his path.

They showed an animatics clip with the Fire Ferrets being beaten and Mako chasing someone on his motorbike. Asame is determined to put her father’s company back on top. Tenzin’s family airbends all around the island. Korra goes into the avatar state to win race. The spirit creature attacks Korra, it is twice her size. She goes into the avatar state to fight it.

A very cool spirit creature with glowing eyes, walks on two legs, with a tail, and branch like appendages.

Bringing in two writers from Avatar to work on Season 2, so Bryan can focus more on design and art.

They recorded the ComicCon audience's voices to use for the Pro-Bending crowd

Hopefully with the spoiler images of the Souther Air Temple(?) it means the story will be reaching there at some point in season 2 and maybe Tenzin's family AREN'T the last airbenders /bsover.

I think with us being introduced to Republic City, what we've seen is evolved and advanced bending and once we begin exploring the other kingdoms and nations; we'll see more of what we had in Last Airbender; which is more traditional, grounded bendings and benders of different nations.

sidenote: Zuko looks so bad-ass in the picture few posts above. I really hope we get some flashbacks of them or mentioned more in season 2.

Aang was referred to as the last airbender and not necessarily the last Air Nomad. People think that Chong may be a descendent of an airbender because his outfit is similar to Tibetan clothes (which the Air Nomads were based on) as well as being a nomad himself. SOURCE (http://atla-annotated.tumblr.com/post/18891992710/are-there-any-surviving-air-nomads-is-chong-an)

It's possible that descendants of the survivors experimented with their spiritual side after the war so by the time Korra came along, there might be more air benders. /speculation

Some interesting news that I don't think we knew before:

Avatar: The Last Airbender may have ended in 2008 but it left a devoted fan base that has only grown in recent years. Now the sequel to the hit animated Nickleodeon show is poised to become just as popular if the thousands of people crammed into Ballroom 20 at San Diego Comic Con last week were any indication. The cast and creators of The Legend of Korra were on hand at SDCC where they gave out a few hints about what the second part of season one would bring.

Book Two picks up six months after the conclusion of Book One: Air. Team Avatar will travel to the Southern Water Tribe and Southern Air Temple as Korra (Janet Varney) continues mastering the elements. She will also make a trip or two to the spirit world, as hinted at by the Book Two’s subtitle, Spirits. But the team will also split apart as Asami (Seychelle Gabriel) takes control of her father’s company, Future Industries, Bolin (P.J. Byrne) returns to the Pro-Bending arena and Mako (David Faustino) becomes a Republic City policeman.

Even before SDCC, Nickelodeon had already order three more seasons of Korra, for a total of 52 episodes, and it’s easy to see why. The short previews displayed at Comic-Con proved that Korra hasn’t lost its superb balance between action, humor, mystery, the supernatural, and romance. If you aren’t convinced, just watch the Book One highlights below and be sure to keep an eye out for Book Two: Spirits premiering in Summer 2013. So it seems like they all will be doing a more solo thing this season, instead of a team thing.

Also, if anyone missed the "Making of a Legend", you can watch all twelve here: http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL382B0B760389B74A&feature=plcp
