MangaHelpers Community Awards is an annual event included in MangaHelpers birthday celebration. The awards given here are dedicated as appreciation to members of MangaHelpers who have helped in building MangaHelpers into what it is today.

MangaHelpers Community Awards will be done in form of polling and will have various categories. All categories, however, will generally follow the system described below.

Part 1: Nomination

Nomination Round

Time: 1 week.
Each member nominates maximum three names for each category.
The nominees that are nominated will be regarded as official nominees for the voting rounds unless they wish to be excluded.

Break for 3 days. The break can be used for the nominees to 'campaign' for themselves.

Part 2: Voting

Voting Round 1

Time: 5 days.
Members can vote for 4 names out of all nominees.
Only half of the current nominees would proceed to the next round. (Categories with an odd number of nominees will go by the highest e.g. 9 > 5 > 3 > 1.)
During this week nominees are allowed to 'campaign' for themselves.

Voting Round 2

Time: 5 days.
Members can vote for 2 names out of the remaining nominees.
Only half of the current nominees would proceed to the next round. (Categories with an odd number of nominees will go by the highest e.g. 9 > 5 > 3 > 1.)
During this week nominees are allowed to 'campaign' for themselves.

Voting Round Final

Time: 5 days.
Members can only vote for 1 name out of the remaining nominees.
In case of a tie, the nominees will go through another short voting round.
During this week nominees are not allowed to do any 'campaign'.

The polling will follow the timeline below:

Nomination Round: September 18, 2011 - September 25, 2011
Break for Campaigns: September 25, 2011 - September 28, 2011
Voting Round 1: September 28, 2011 - October 03, 2011
Voting Round 2: October 03, 2011 - October 08, 2011
Voting Round Final: October 09, 2011 - October 14, 2011

Prizes given to you if you win the polling:

The winner (the first place; member with highest number of votes) will receive an award and will be given a custom user title based on the category he/she wins.

What is a campaign?
In this event, you are allowed to campaign for yourself. You are allowed to encourage other members to nominate for you during the nomination round or to vote for you during the voting round. However, there are certain things to note for this process.

All campaigns must be done publicly at MangaHelpers website. You are not allowed to campaign via PM or external websites.
You are allowed to campaign for yourself at your own thread and category threads. Campaign-related posts at Fun Forum is allowed, but it is not allowed at other sections (non-spam sections), especially series discussion sections.
The method of campaigning should still follow the forum rules and etiquette.

Please excuse me for posting here but I need to do this here so that I don't repeat myself constantly in more than one category thread. First of all, really cool idea with the community awards. I think it's a nice change and an interesting concept that can develop over time.

Secondly, I would like to thank everyone for there nominations. I'm sure many of you have similar thoughts but please don't get offended or upset if you feel that I don't show you any appreciation or "return the favour" so to speak. As if I did, vote for you just because you voted for me then it would potentially ruin the whole purpose of this event. Nominations are limited so it'll be tricky for many of us to decide on just three for each category. I hope the majority of people (especially, the FF'ers whom I know the most on a day to day basis online) respect each users nominations and not take it to heart.

^^Wise words:om

I'm curious about the campaigns...I'm interested in how far will people go, and how creative can they be...I'm looking forward to some witty slogans and banners:p

Nomination round has ended!
Thank you very much for your participation.

The status of all categories is now break for campaign. We decided to change the system of the awards and skip the second round of nomination because there are not too many names and categories need to go through that round. That means that you can now campaign for yourself so other members would vote for you. Remember, all campaigns must be done publicly at MangaHelpers forum only, and you can make use of your own thread, the category thread you are nominated in, or Fun Forum but not series discussion areas.

Refer to each category thread's OP for information about official nominees.
The break for campaign will end on September 28th, 2011 at approximately 10 PM (timezone: GMT+7).

Ok this sorta throws me off a bit, the nomination is over, so why would we campaign for people to nominate for us??

(Can we change our sigs to campaign for ourselves???)

Hmm, looks like some words were missing. XD What I meant was that it is okay to campaign so that members would nominate for you during the nomination round, and vote for you during the voting round. Sorry about that! ^^;

And sure, you can use your signature to campaign for yourself.

Errrm... I just wanted to point out, that even though the rules clearly say, that it is possible to vote only for 4 members in the first voting round, speaking theoratically, people could vote for 5,6 or even all of the possible candidates. I'm not saying that possible trolls will do this, but isn't there a way to overcome this somehow? :headscratch

The status of all categories is now voting round 1.

Yes, alpha, we are aware of that. The most we can do, because there is no way to limit someone's vote, is to look through who make the votes and make sure that no one votes for more than 4 names. I would like to encourage you guys not to vote for more than 4 names as well, to make things easier for all of us. ^^

In case you guys wonder that 'Be advised that this is a public poll: other users can see the choice(s) you selected.' but you can't see anything, the poll is made so for moderators to see who votes for who (to make sure that members only vote for 4 names). But then it won't be fun (and perhaps could hurt someone) if other members can see who votes for who, right? So the result is hidden.

Oops! I wasn't aware of that 4 names thing so I knocked my self out on the voting system. you can however disregard the additional votes above four. Sorry!

M3J
September 28, 2011, 05:41 PM
Actually, you can limit the multiple choices to four votes when making a new poll. When it tells you the number of selection you can do, just do one (if it's only for one) or four (if you want votes to be able to vote for four things). I can clarify with screenshots if need be.

I've got a question, you said all polls would be public, but why do some of the polls hide our votes?

As far as I know such option does not exist. But because I'm not very sure about technical things like that, I would leave it for someone more experienced than me to answer it. XD

I've got a question, you said all polls would be public, but why do some of the polls hide our votes?

I had answered above, to be honest:

In case you guys wonder that 'Be advised that this is a public poll: other users can see the choice(s) you selected.' but you can't see anything, the poll is made so for moderators to see who votes for who (to make sure that members only vote for 4 names). But does it only apply for certain polls? You can see the results of some polls?

The ones with Icei are all public, the ones with phio are all private. Or they were yesterday, anyways.

phio_chan
September 30, 2011, 09:52 AM
Yes, I know. :)

After thinking and discussing this matter, we had decided to leave the votes public for everyone! The votes would be most probably be hidden for the final round. We did this in hope that it would be more interesting for everyone, in matters of campaigning or voting for some names. Sorry for the confusion. ^^; I hope you have fun with the awards! <3

---------- Post added at 09:52 PM ---------- Previous post was at 07:05 PM ----------

And also, maybe you find the polls strange. The names listed as voters there are not synced with the number of votes for some nominees. The number of votes are is changed due to the request of the voters, as some voters voted for more than 4 names before.

BakaHaze
September 30, 2011, 06:27 PM
Uhh yeah how exactly do you stop people from voting more than 4 people?

phio_chan
October 01, 2011, 12:32 AM
Altering the votes. I've mentioned above, but perhaps it's not very clear. I can change the number of votes for each nominees, adding or substracting number of votes for cases like this. ^^ That is why if you look at the results of the polls, you will find that a nominee has 4 votes for example even though below his name there are 5 names who had voted for him.

M3J
October 01, 2011, 12:53 AM

We used to have the option to choose how much people could vote for at max, but I guess that was removed after the upgrade.

BakaHaze
October 01, 2011, 10:11 PM
Haha but phio how do you know which votes you're going to subtract?

Say person A voted for like 10 people, which six people are you going to remove votes from? Doesn't that cause unfairness? What Happens if Person A actually wanted to vote a different 4 people than the people you didn't remove votes from? lol

Of course I would ask them first, you silly. :XD

M3J
October 01, 2011, 11:19 PM
We ask them who they wanted to vote for.

Great job, all of you. You have done an amazing work in contributing for MangaHelpers.
We hope you would always love MangaHelpers forever and never stop contributing! Don't be discouraged because you don't win or not nominated. You know we all love you deep inside and can't appreciate you guys big enough. <3
This thread is now open for comments and feedback about the Community Awards' system which has just ended,
or ideas and suggestions for the future Community Awards.

Look forward to hear from you! :tem

I'm glad that you're enjoying it, dark lord. :D

Feel free to let us know what you think of the system. This is the first community awards anyway, so there must be some flaws. XD What do you think of the system? The nomination and voting? What do you think of the campaign? Can we improve it somehow to make it more interesting? What about the categories? Does the number of categories enough, or should there be more?

Don't hesitate to let us know your opinion! ^^

On a side note, I'd like to thank everyone who has been helping me during this project. Technically speaking I am the responsible person for this award, but I've received so much help that I can't thank everyone enough. You are all awesome. ^__^

O.K. I'll start then with my feedback. Also, I'll leave the praising part for later. Here, I'm gonna tell what I think went wrong.

1st. This whole public/hidden votes thing. First they were supposed to be hidden, then due to some technical problems half of them were public the other half not. You decided to make all of them public later though, but it still left something of bitter taste. Nothing serious though ;)

2nd. Amount of nominations. 20 people were overkill. I don't recall a single section where there were actuall official nominees or how they were called. I suggest a number of 15 for the bigger sections (Family Member, Epic Member) and 10 for the smaller ones (Reviewer, Scanlator).

3rd. Campaigning. One of the more serious fails. I mean, yeah, people changing their MZ Thread Titles, and adding a "Vote me for..." sentence in their signatures sure is great and all, but somehow I don't see this as actuall campaigning. I haven't seen something like discussions between members who both were nominated for a section. For example, jorped and dark lord could have made a debate as to who of them is the most passionate member. So, maybe something like a "collosuem" or a "battlefield" would be appropriate for the next Community Awards.

4th. This isn't a real problem, but still. I think that there were to few people actually participating in these Awards. The number of voters was something around 30. That's the MH Staff + FF/MZ'er. Of course they are also part of the Community, but the other people who post in the Manga Sections are also part of it, however they haven't participated at all. I think that the Community Awards themself need more campaigning, so that more people would participate.

Once again, I pointed out the bad stuff. However I also think, that these Community Awards are a great idea and I hope you'll read my suggestions and maybe use them the next time. :super

Yes, true. First we were planning to do it hidden. But then there were some technical problems. After discussing it we ended up making it public until the second voting round. We were not being consistent, sorry about that. XD The original plan was made without much consideration of how it would go (this is the first awards after all), so there were many modifications made at spot. XD

2nd. Amount of nominations. 20 people were overkill. I don't recall a single section where there were actuall official nominees or how they were called. I suggest a number of 15 for the bigger sections (Family Member, Epic Member) and 10 for the smaller ones (Reviewer, Scanlator).

At first I thought there would be many nominations. The poll could only have as far as 30 names, so I thought 20 would be a great number. Some categories did get more than 20 nominees, but some others didn't, therefore we decided to take off the system to decide on official nominees. Again, on-spot alteration of the system. XD But sure, we would have to consider this more carefully next year. ^^

I mean, yeah, people changing their MZ Thread Titles, and adding a "Vote me for..." sentence in their signatures sure is great and all, but somehow I don't see this as actuall campaigning. I think it depends on the categories as well. Some categories might be hard to campaign for, like "wisest staff member" or "best translator". The campaign system would definitely get a change next year, though we are not yet sure of what can be done. Perhaps providing members with a thread where they can debate or where other members can ask them questions regarding their nomination. Feel free to give ideas on how we can make this Community Awards not a simple nominate-then-vote event, but also in which members can interact and get to know each other too.

Yes, definitely. The advertisement of this event was not that prepared, maybe, although we have used all ways possible: news at the homepage, forum-wide announcement, links in signature, etc. Another homework for us next year. :P

Thank you for the feedback, alpha! Much appreciated. :super

Next time I would appreciate if you would make an option to receive PMs about beginning of next round. I've missed second phase (and every other round too) and I wanted to vote on gernot. I'm sorry that you missed several voting rounds. I myself missed the deadline of the final voting round. ^^; Thank you for the suggestion. Sending a mass PM each time a round begins or ends might be annoying to few people who are not interested in the awards, but I think that is indeed a good option. Or maybe you can mark the dates on your calendar as well, just in case. XD Thanks for the input! ^^

So how have been the winners rewarded?

Working on it. We are not yet sure of the space for Community Awards in the yearbook, so adding the names of three finalists can't be confirmed yet. Sorry about that. But the winners would definitely get featured. User titles for the winners are coming along too; the administrators are rather busy nowadays.

Thank you for the patience! :D
