I nominate Thorfinn from Vinland Saga for best male lead.
Thorfinn was merry little boy like almost every Icelandic inhabitant was in childhood, but thanks to unpredictable development he became a murderer who seeks for revenge. His heart is filled with black clouds of hatred and he will not give up on killing Askeladd! As Thorfinn life continues some great changes befall him and his personality will change again. Who knows, maybe he will become a true warrior?
When you take Thorfinn and compare him to other revenge seekers in manga, you can clearly see what are Japanese (except Yukimura Makoto apparently) making wrong. While he is consumed by hatred Thorfinn never doubts his resolve. He never thinks about something like: "Should I forgive him?" No, he is reaching for his goal. He is losing all of his emotions except anger and hatred. Thorfinn is extremely deep character (as every character in works of Yukimura Makoto), but the reader has to think about what he is reading.

December 18, 2011, 12:57 PM
I nominate Eikichi Onizuka from Great Teacher Onizuka.
He is really a lead character. A character that carries the story on his shoulders. It's hard not to like his honest but stubborn personality and unconventional way of thinking. It is admirable how he believes in his students. He may not be smart, he may not be well-educated. But he sure knows life and teaches the kids the most important things. He really is the greatest teacher.

I'll nominate Rai (Cadis Etrama di Raizel) from Noblesse as the most epic (and best) lead :zomg The quiet, almost invisible (or, not so much, his stunning looks sure get him lots of attention), yet I always anticipate every move he makes. So ridiculous not knowing how to -insert modern technology- and crazy about ramen, and yet I say "Kneel" and the most. epic. scene. ever pops into my head. Modest, loving people....
...and knows how to choose a servant, yup :nod

I nominate Ichigo Kurosaki for Best Male Lead.
Ichigo has come far in Bleach. He has grown a lotfrom losing his power to gaining them back and fighting in the Winter War. All his fights and all the friends he made ever since he became a Shinigami has made him a better person. I eagerly await 2012 as now Ichigo has the power to protect his loved ones again and it helps that Ichigo is more badass now.

I nominate Date Masamune from Sengoku Basara for Best Male Lead category
Because despite being arrogant, cool and noisy, he actually cares for everyone around him, especially his underlings, and has a kind spot, which add contrast to his character. The design for his weapon, Six Claws, too make his personality more appealing (this may be just to me lol)- drawing all his six swords, which signifies he'll fight with all his might with the opponent he acknowledges. Not to mention his 'Engrish' and seriousness can easily crack up a comedy scene

Killua from Hunter X Hunter.
He's smart, skillful, strong, versatile an assassin and intelligent as fuck. And He's only at 12.

Since Light is both the Main lead and Villain of Death Note, I'm going to nominate him for the former here. His incredible intellect and tactical mind, mixed with his ruthless ambition made him a superb character.

I'd like to nominate Akumetsu for Best Male Lead.
And by Akumetsu I mean ALL the Shou(s), obviously.
It has it all, charisma, noble goal/righteousness, cleverness, it can be fun at times but utlimately it's gonna sacrifice itself while busting your ***, ******* ! The incarnation of a deep ideology.

I support this nomination too, Thorfinn
Furthermore, I would like to request if the persons who nominated Askeladd to reconsider their nomination in here and thus nominate him in the male support category. I do respect choices but imo it is quite clear nowadays that Askeladd isn't the male lead in Vinland saga. Well choices are made and I respect it but I kinda regret that Askeladd is nominated in a category that isn't his at all

well main characters don't have to be the lead characters per se, Vegeta played an important role and got a lot of screentime after the first big timeskip so he can be considered a main. The same goes for Kanda so yeah, you can nominate him :) I will add him to the list

Thorfinn: Unfortunately I don't know Vinland Saga well enough in order to judge.
Naruto: Great character. Kind of guy you wish he was your friend. But I do think that the character was destroyed a little.Naruto was a dropout fighting destiny in order to prove the world that you can be bad at something but that you can make it by working hard.
A great example of that is when he said to Neji that he had issues with a jutsu that he never could accomplish ... And when naruto say the name of the jutsu to Neji (bunshin no jutsu), it was awesome. At that time, Naruto was IMO the greatest character in the mangaverse.
BUT then we learn that his father is yondaime hokage & that Naruto was revealed to be te chosen one to jiraya. So, it was his destiny all along to be a super ninja ... so, basically, all Naruto is doing is just accomplishing his destiny while he spend his whole life fighting destiny.
Edward Elric: Good character but he didn't stand out that much for me. The overall cast in FMA was awesome but I don't think there was one particular character standing out. It's as a whole that they were good.
Yagami Light: I nearly voted for him. A badass extremely smart cold blooded killer as a main character. But Light was only so great of a character because of L (then Near & Melo). What is Mortimer without Sherlock, Simon without Garfunkel ... what is Light without his opponents.
Luffy : the straw hats are easily my fav group of characters in any media (mangas, tv series, movies, Belgian Comics, ...). And the straw hats are build around that crazy character. He meets all the requirements in order to be the perfect shounen hero: Heroic, Good, Nuts, Provocative, Easily making friends, an eating maniac, borderline stupid, full of surprises ...

There are a few good choices and it comes down to Edward or Luffy for me.
But I've stuck with Luffy for 600+ chapters and while Ed is awesome Luffy is just more awesome because the manga is longer lol.

Judging from your sig and avatar aren't you a little biased towards Ed? My post was made as a joke hence the lol at the end.
Also why is it a shitty reason to like a character if their manga is longer and logically they have better moments spread out throughout the manga vs the 108 chapters Edward gets and he isn't even in some of the chapters?

Just because it's only "108" it was a monthly series with some chapters having more pages than the weekly series wouldn't reach in a month. There is a huge difference, and no I am not biased towards Ed. Hell even if I was biased why would that matter as it is my own opinion. Yes, I know Luffy's character, and honestly I believe he is over-rated.

I agree with you that Luffy can be overrated sometimes but hey its just a vote. I think that Luffy is a great Male lead. FMA ended a while back, maybe if it ended recently I would have voted for Ed. Still you never know, Ed might just win in the end. :)

Your reasons are puzzling. In what way does the length of a manga or its age have anything to do with the quality of the main character?

I voted for Luffy as well, but I like his character more so than I do Ed's. It really doesn't make sense to like a character more simply because the manga they're in is on going or has more chapters, because then you're really not taking the character into account, just the manga and how recent it is.

Ok I guess there are some misunderstandings about my posts. Not that it should matter all that much since I jokingly said One Piece was longer and I voted Luffy because of that.
