There will be eight teams that consist of two characters each. Every participant will choose two characters from the list that weren’t already chosen by someone else and a team name if they want it to be different from their forum nickname.

After all teams are chosen, the league schedule will be announced and every team will play against every other team in a seven-round league format. For each round, players must submit their battle strategy to BFL moderator no later than the last day of each round. The result of the fights will be announced on the first day of the next round.

If a player fails to submit his/her battle strategy, it will be an auto-loss. In case the player informs BFL moderator of his/her absence in advance, the fight may or may not be postponed by the moderator. Such postponements will be announced in this thread.

At the end of seven rounds, the team which has the most points wins the league. If two or more teams have equal points, the team(s) with higher number of wins will be ranked higher. If number of wins are also equal, points taken in the fight(s) between those teams will be used to break the tie. If there’s still a tie, the teams will share the same place.

Before each fight, players will choose the order their characters will play, character 1 and character 2. Character 1 of player A fights character 2 of player B and character 1 of player B fights character 2 of player A. See fight rules for order of the moves.

They will also choose which one of feats, low-class techniques and high-class techniques their character will use in the fight. Players will not know each other’s character order and techniques before the fight, the battle strategies will be sent to BFL moderator (Miyagi (http://mangahelpers.com/forum/private.php?do=newpm&u=154339)) by PM during each round.

This is an example PM for battle strategy:

Subject: Battle strategy of [nickname/team name] for Round [x]

Message: Character 1, Aizen, Master Manipulator, Taunt, Kanzen Saimin. Character 2, Ichigo, Power of Friendship, Getsuga Tenshō, Final Getsuga Tenshō.

The player who wins more individual fights wins the overall fight. If wins are equal, it’s a draw. The side who wins gets two points, both sides get one point in case of a draw. The side who loses doesn’t get any points.

Total score of a character is 2 * (attack + defense + speed) + 5 * mental + reiatsu

At the end of a fight, the character with higher score wins.

None of the stats can drop below zero.

Attack, defense or speed can’t exceed reiatsu. If your attack is 10 and your reiatsu is 20, an ability that increases your attack by 15 makes your attack 20, not 25. Likewise, if an ability decreases your reiatsu, other stats decrease too if they’re bigger than reiatsu.

Fight ends immediately when one side’s reiatsu drops to zero.

Rounding may be necessary after certain abilities result in a non-integer stat value. “Rounding up” rounds off this value to nearest integer which is bigger than the result, “rounding down” does the opposite. Be careful, it’s the stat value that’s rounded after the calculation.

The order of the moves: Character 1 - feat → Character 2 - feat → Character 1 - Low-class Technique → Character 2 - Low-class Technique → Character 1 - High-class Technique → Character 2 - High-class Technique. Passive feats which counter enemy abilities (e.g. Isshin’s Enhanced Durability or Yammy’s Anger) have precedence and are active at all times.

Predict the results of the four fights in each round, i.e. "Player A wins" or "draw". For each correct guess you'll get one point and the person who collects most points after seven rounds will win the Best Predictor Award of Bleach Fan League. No points will be given for fights which result in an auto-loss. If you don't make any predictions in a round, you won't get any points in that round.

Your total points will be updated after each round.

Ah, what the heck i'll play. I chose Ryūken and Harribel like a pokemon master.

I'm still a bit unsure about how this works but it seems easy enough. Unlike the SPoT fan league that is more complicated that Vintage MTG sometimes (<3 Kaoz) Prays that this league is balanced and I didn't just choose two fodder chars.

Miyagi
March 29, 2012, 10:38 AM
There are no fodder characters, some characters may be slightly stronger than others (due to technical reasons) but they're more or less equal. Playing the game is easy but devising a good strategy may sometimes require a bit of thinking.

A chance to crush Jyten and Darj twice in the same time period? Sign me up!

I'll take Wonderweiss. I'll also choose Yoruichi, not because she's particularly strong in the fan league, but because she's my favorite character. :hip

Germany's a wild place, and you lose automatically by not making it to Germany in the 2012 calendar year.

My mouse is already frozen, so he's immune to your attacks.

I have assigned Gin to your name but you have to pick someone else instead of Rangiku. Unfortunately, she is not in the list.

I am picking Urahara and Isshin. I am willing to change if someone else wants to pick them. The offer is valid for members only :XD.

Okay, i am changing Rangiku, cause i had a talk with Gin regarding this matter, and he doesn't want Rangiku to be involved or hurt. So i will pick up Aizen, i hope he's not one of those fodder characs... Thanks...

Short results of Round 1:

-Ken- vs Kaoz --> Draw
Darjaille vs FrostyMouse --> Draw
thornofcarrion vs jimtors --> thornofcarrion wins

Detailed results with all strategies and fights are in OP.

I failed to make a single correct prediction lol, your strategies were completely different from what I had in mind. -Ken- vs Kaoz was the most unpredictable matchup of the round, nobody guessed it right. Jyten's loss can also be considered a surprise, most people correctly predicted that Darjaille vs FrostyMouse would be a draw and thornofcarrion would win though.

My predictions for Round 2:

Predictions had similar success rate this round, I'm the only person who correctly guessed jimtors would win, this can be considered the surprise result of the round. Another interesting note is that Kaoz didn't predict his own win, he's playing safe. After two rounds, no player has two wins or two losses, it's a balanced league so far.

It was a round with hard-to-predict results evidenced by the fact that leader of prediction score table, alphabeta, didn't win any points, only two of the nine predictions were correct. Everybody thought Jyten vs thornofcarrion would be a draw but Jyten managed to win and now he's in second place with warbandit66. Darjaille had three draws in a row. Kaoz won and he's the sole leader now.

warbandit66 and Jyten continued their successful run and won their fights. thornofcarrion won his game by default and kept following the leaders. The result of Darjaille vs Kaoz will be very important for Darjaille, Kaoz and other players. If Darjaille wins, she'll find herself in the middle of title race, if Kaoz wins, he'll eliminate one of his rivals and retain his leadership position. The result of this game is also very important for prediction league. alphabeta correctly predicted that Jyten would win, if Darjaille also wins, alphabeta will most likely win the prediction league.

warbandit66 is the sole leader now after Kaoz and Jyten drew their game. He effectively pushed thornofcarrion out of the title race and is in a very advantageous position now. It was a rather surprise result, out of four predictions only I guessed it correctly. A draw from Kaoz vs Jyten was expected, Kaoz hadn't lost a single game and Jyten was on a roll. Interestingly it was Jyten's first draw. FrostyMouse is the only predictor who correctly guessed he would draw with -Ken-, they both needed a win, so this result benefited neither of them. Darjaille finally broke a streak of draws and managed to win at the expense of jimtors who now lost three games in a row. Darjaille vs warbandit66 in Round 6 will determine her chances for leadership.

Short results of Round 6:

Darjaille vs warbandit66 --> Draw

Jyten vs jimtors --> Draw
Kaoz vs FrostyMouse --> postponed

Detailed results with all strategies and fights are in OP.

Surprise result of the round is Jyten vs jimtors. Everybody predicted that Jyten would win but jimtors secured a draw. The game shows that there're no easy points and everything can happen. warbandit66 missed his chance to take advantage of Jyten's draw but considering that Darjaille has not lost a game yet, perhaps draw is a good result. An unexpected easy victory for thornofcarrion gives him hope in title race. Another interesting note is that warbandit66 and jimtors scored their first draws in Round 6.

Due to surprise results, there's not much change in prediction score table. Things got quite complicated though and the result of tomorrow's Kaoz vs FrostyMouse will be crucial for both leagues.

I am the only winner in Round 6 http://img850.imageshack.us/img850/4127/fuckyeahduckyeahs.png.

Kaoz vs. Frosty - statistically speaking, Kaoz has advantage. It does not guarantee a win though. Frosty need to do something different, if he hasn't already tried all different strategies / options.

Miyagi
May 04, 2012, 06:55 AM
Even though Kaoz has a much better track record, this is not a good match-up for him and in theory both sides have equal chances. The side who anticipates other side's strategy will win and since FrostyMouse is familiar with Kaoz's tactics from SPoT Fan League, it makes things a bit harder for Kaoz because he needs points more than FrostyMouse does. Even though I predicted a draw, this is one of the volatile match-ups which can easily go either way. FrostyMouse doesn't have a win yet and he will probably want to make an impact in the title race by handing one of the leaders his first loss. If Kaoz loses this game, he'll also lose his chance to win the title, so this game is extremely important for him.

My predictions for Round 7:

warbandit66 vs -Ken- --> warbandit66 wins
Darjaille vs Jyten --> Draw
thornofcarrion vs Kaoz --> Kaoz wins
jimtors vs FrostyMouse --> Draw

I think Miyagi has the highest chances of winning the predictions leauge simply because he is (arguably) the only person who's read every single battle and hence knows every players tactics and strategy. On the other hand, I didn't read a single battle and everything was just intuition. :sweatdrop

Miyagi
May 04, 2012, 04:40 PM
To be honest, I don't examine people's strategies to have an opinion about their future tactics and make accurate predictions, I just calculate the results without paying particular attention to any details. In first round, I tried to analyze the match-ups based on comparative strengths and weaknesses of the characters but people's choices are usually different from what you expect from them. My predictions are based on intuition like everybody else's.

Result of the postponed game

Kaoz vs FrostyMouse --> Kaoz wins (auto-win)

Kaoz now has nine points but warbandit66 still has the advantage because he has higher number of wins. If Kaoz wins and warbandit66 draws or loses in round 7, Kaoz will win BFL. If both warbandit66 and Kaoz loses, and Jyten wins, Jyten will win the title but it's highly unlikely because both Kaoz and Jyten's opponent darj haven't lost a game yet.

May 6 is the last day to submit battle strategies for round 7.

Ok, now that the first BFL is over, we have a better idea about the overall experience, what do you members think about BFL in general?

- If you didn't participate in BFL, was there a particular reason? Do you think the system is too complicated?

- What do you think about the abilities? Are the explanations easy to understand? Are abilities too similar or is there enough variety? Do the abilities reflect the characters accurately?

- What do you think about the characters? Do you think they are indeed balanced? Do we have enough of them or do you want to have a second tier of characters? If we have more characters, will we have more players or more characters per player?

- What about strategies? Does having a good strategy give you an edge or do you think the results are mostly random and a matter of luck? Do making a strategy and calculating the results take too much time or is it simple enough? Or do we need a system which allows more complex strategies and less random results?

- What about the fight format? We have two 1 vs 1 fights, would you rather have one 2 vs 2 fight, i.e. teamwork? One 3 vs 3 or two 2 vs 2 fights perhaps.

- What about the duration of a round, which was three days? Do you want more time or do you want BFL to proceed quicker?

- Is the tiebreaking system fair? Should we give three points for each win as in football?

- What about losses by default? Is it better to let a player use his/her strategy for previous round(s) if he/she fails to submit one for the current round?

- What kind of changes can we do in prediction league? Is it a good idea to give more points for results which were guessed by less people? How would that system work?

Kaoz
May 19, 2012, 02:46 AM
- What do you think about the abilities? Are the explanations easy to understand? Are abilities too similar or is there enough variety? Do the abilities reflect the characters accurately?

While I prefer more abstract ability descriptions (although it's also for my own convenience admitedly), they are easily understandable at the moment. If you decide to make things more complex, having them a bit more structured might be a good idea though.

As for variety, I personally wouldn't mind some more, but you would have added complexity in that case which might have other issues.

Can't comment on the last one.

- What do you think about the characters? Do you think they are indeed balanced? Do we have enough of them or do you want to have a second tier of characters? If we have more characters, will we have more players or more characters per player?

Only adressing the last one here, if you keep only 1v1 battles, I think more players would be preferable, if you add other formats, more characters per player would work better.

- What about strategies? Does having a good strategy give you an edge or do you think the results are mostly random and a matter of luck? Do making a strategy and calculating the results take too much time or is it simple enough? Or do we need a system which allows more complex strategies and less random results?

Whether it's luck or not is hard to say with the small sample size we have. In order to determine that accurately, we'd need to know the expected outcome of a match (i.e. when you calculate all possible ability combinations, who is more likely to win), compare those to the actual outcome and then determine how much time someone spent on making theirs.

As for myself, I find the process rather simple and took 8-10 minutes per round to make a line-up. That includes actually checking what my opponent's characters are capable of, writing and sending the PM etc.

(Of course, as you probably know by now, I'm never opposed to a more complex system as long as I don't have to spend hours calculating the outcome.)

- What about the fight format? We have two 1 vs 1 fights, would you rather have one 2 vs 2 fight, i.e. teamwork? One 3 vs 3 or two 2 vs 2 fights perhaps.

Depends on the amount of characters per players I'd say.
-2 characters: 2 1v1 fights
-3 characters: 1 3v3 fight
-4 characters: 2 1v1 fights and 1 2v2 fight

It also depends on how close to the manga you want to keep this since there apparently are mostly 1v1 fights and only a limited amount of supporting abilities overall.

- What about the duration of a round, which was three days? Do you want more time or do you want BFL to proceed quicker?

4 days. I think a good amount of the auto losses could have been avoided with that additional day.

- Is the tiebreaking system fair? Should we give three points for each win as in football?

I would prefer having two points per win to keep things closer throughout the season, but eh. If you decided to have more players and a KO stage, this might be worth reconsidering though.

- What about losses by default? Is it better to let a player use his/her strategy for previous round(s) if he/she fails to submit one for the current round?

I'd say keep the default losses. It's not exactly great to lose points against someone who couldn't be bothered to send something in.

- What kind of changes can we do in prediction league? Is it a good idea to give more points for results which were guessed by less people? How would that system work?

That might be an interesting idea. You could either base it on the current standings (so if someone with 3 wins and 1 loss plays against someone with 0 wins and 4 losses, betting on the latter would give you more points), the expected, calculated outcome, on the way people predicted (e.g. 4 people predicted A's win and only 1 person predicted B's win, if B actually wins that person gets more points than the other 4 would have gotten in the case A had won), or a combination of the three.

I'm not too sure if the ability reflected the ability in the manga accurately. I don't believe that ability A is as strong as ability B, for example. The "ultimate" for each characters are not equal in the manga.

I'm aware that players can pick their characters, which made the balance in the game a little bit in the air. I'm not sure about their balance. We haven't try enough fights with the variation in their techniques to have a big enough sample size. The sample size would have to be a lot bigger.

I would prefer it more if there's "cost" which is relative to characters' strength. The "balance" also is a difficult things to archive without the cost. If it were balance, it means that each characters in the game, IF the owner pick the move right, should be able to get a draw against the opponent. Otherwise, the opponent characters is a "stronger" characters. I recommend tallying up all the results for each characters to see their win and lose history. And if you can form a tier with that tallies, there's a hole you need to fill. Also, if you saw some constant win or lose history, that is also something you might want to fix.

I feel like 3 characters per player would be more enjoyable. I do think good strategy CAN pay off. But there's only a small sample size right now, so it's hard to be sure. And there's only 2 characters slot. There's only so much you can do with it. With 3, you are forced to do much more prediction.

I'm fine with duration of each round. My auto-loss comes from my midterm, so it's my own fault.

That's it for my review of this game. It might look like a lot of negative, but I actually do enjoy the game. So thanks for running it!

P.S. Might as well do a little advertisement here, because there seemed to be members who enjoyed playing games. I opened up a new game in Role Playing forum. Take a look!

That's true. For example under normal circumstances Harribel can't defeat Aizen in the manga, I purposely made Aizen weaker and Harribel stronger to let them fight on equal terms. A cost system would probably solve this problem but it has its own problems. It's much harder to make characters strong enough to justify their cost. In current system, all characters are more or less equal, so cost isn't an issue. Also we only choose two characters which severely limits our options in a cost system, for example if you are allowed to pick two players with 20 total cost and you choose a character with 13 cost as your first pick, you will be forced to choose a character who has 7 cost which will make most teams predetermined. In SPoT fan league, there are more than 100 characters to choose from and every players chooses eight characters which makes the cost system a lot more viable. As we add more characters to BFL, I guess we can use a cost system once we have enough characters.

It's also very hard to make a system where every character can draw against every other character with each character having very different abilities. In current system, some characters are certainly better than others in certain match-ups and can always win with perfect play but the number of advantageous match-ups for each character is almost equal and every player should be able to collect seven points in seven games if he/she employs good strategy but I guess luck factor can affect the results up to 2-3 points under normal circumstances.

I used computer simulations to make characters as balanced as possible but of course play with real players can be a lot different. For example it can be much easier to find the correct strategy for certain characters whereas some characters which have relatively complex abilities may require a bit of thinking. As you and Kaoz said, we need more samples to make sure they're indeed balanced but I guess there's not yet an observable weakness in the small sample we have.

Do you mean "3 1 vs 1 fights" or "1 3 vs 3 fight" like Kaoz suggested? We may try a system where three characters can fight side by side as a team and use abilities which enhance their teammates or damage more than one opponent but these kind of abilities are uncommon in Bleach, so it's kinda hard to use such a system. 1 vs 1 fights with 3 characters is easier to employ (and can save me from designing a totally new system which will render my previous work useless lol) but to make it a fair system we will actually need 6 fights, 3 chars will fight twice, once in character 1 position and once in character 2 position. That will triple the amount of work needed to make a strategy which may be bothersome for some players.

I was thinking about 4 1 vs 1 fights, 2 fights as usual with high-tier characters and 2 more with mid-tier characters. That will be possible if I have the time and energy to make a new set of characters. As you said, there'll be more fights, more strategies and more variety in the teams. The amount of time required to make a strategy will be doubled (which will be 20 mins according to Kaoz's estimates) but if we give 4 days for each round per Kaoz's suggestion, it can solve this problem.

Thanks for your comments, we need them to make the game more fun. I'm glad to hear you enjoyed the game, if you have time to participate I wish you more success next time.

Yes, but it also means that after enough characters in add, you had to redo all abilities to "balance" characters according to cost. It's probably a good idea for you to decide where you want to go with this league, and design accordingly. I think cost system will pay off in the long run, though.

I don't mind my results at all, lol. You can ask Kaoz how he did in first few SPoT fan league he take part in. He deserve this win.

I'm planning to add a new tier of characters for next BFL but lately I was a bit busy and I couldn't work on it. Hopefully I'll finish it in 2-3 weeks time and we can start a new BFL with more characters and fights. If you have any suggestions, feel free to post it in this thread.
