What is the ToC ranking?
ToC stands for Table of Contents. It's found on the last page of every issue of WSJ, but more importantly, the order the series appear in on the ToC is closely related to the popularity of the series. This is determined by polling the readers; there is a polling postcard in every issue of WSJ.

Each week, a certain guy from 2ch writes out TOC for the following week's Jump. TOC order is usually based on polling result of readers, thus you will know how your favorite series are doing based on the order.

Some exceptions etc:
- For the 2nd-8th chapters, TOC is already decided, though it could change depends on readers' ranking.
- The TOC is affected by the popularity of 8 chapter ago.
- Shueisha's aiming their main target as elementary and junior high school students, thus, their votes weigh probably more than others (fangirls).

How can I find out what series runs in WSJ?
Click HERE (http://mangahelpers.com/manga/browse/?perpage=10000&magazine=112&status=1) for a list of all the current series running in WSJ. Each link will lead you to more details about the manga, and where you can find translations for all your favourite series! You can also find past series in WSJ by changing the Status filters on that page.

Where are the past WSJ threads?

N00b question again. What's the difference between normal JUMP and JUMP NEXT? :question

Jump NEXT is a seasonal magazine featuring one shots mostly by new artists, or artists between serialization. There are three issues a year: New Years, Golden Week (next week), and Obon (August).

Woah, Gintama trouncing those three and to think One Piece is fourth. :derp

I wonder if Bleach'll be having the same fate it had last year, gradually sinks to the bottom of the TOC. And it's nice to see Magico being given colored pages again, and hopefully will lead to its rise.

Sad to see Medaka Box so low but on the bright side it's getting a color next week. Seems JUMP is kind of pimping Magico lately but given their track record with new series over the last few years I guess they have to spare something. I'm curious how it'll fare once the new series for the year come in. Meanwhile Bleach continues to spiral down. Perhaps it may push JUMP towards having Kubo finish the final arc within a couple of years rather than the 5-8 I expect him to take.

On a different note I;m very excited of the possibility of Iwashiro returning to JUMP he was definetly one of the better semi newer authors and I'm curious what he was in store after Psyren. Hopefully he won't switch genre's though. He does a pretty solid job of making story driven battle manga. I wonder if the series gonna be from that one shot he did last year, Godland Company. Probably not, but it would be interesting.

Are you expecting 8 years for Kubo finish his series?
Dude, 8 years is like he is writing a new manga, it doesnt make any sense. 5 years in just one arc is already an absurd!

What a surprise! One Piece is 4th!

I'm really glad that Nisekoi are doing well.

And yet the Hueco Mundo/Espada arc lasted 5 years. My fears are justified. Kubo writes very slowly.

Josl
April 27, 2012, 08:43 AM
Gintama first is certainly deserved.
lol at One Piece. Never thought it would rank outside of the top 3 during this arc.
Nisekoi seems to be a keeper. It ranks constantly REALLY well.
I'm glad that Hq!! is doing well. Only read the first 4 chapters but I really like the chemistry between the two main leads.
Pajama na Kanojo does better than I thought it would.
Kurogane has a CP so it rank doesn't really matter

However, four new series managed to survive. I'm really curious to see what will happen if the new 3 series do well as well. What will the staff of WSJ do in that case? Will they start to cancel new series that were rarely in the bottom 5, will they cancel established series, will they move series to another magazine? I hope the new series do well just to see what will happen if they do.

Meanwhile Bleach continues to spiral down. Perhaps it may push JUMP towards having Kubo finish the final arc within a couple of years rather than the 5-8 I expect him to take.
Bleach is still the fourth best selling Manga in the magazine and one of the top 10 best selling Manga in Japan by total sales. The publisher makes its money through Volume sales. Trust me, WSJ has no interest in ending Bleach because it would be stupid from them if they would. They want it to keep going as long as Kubo can stretch it. The ranking does not matter for it. Look at Mago, it ranks terrible, sells less and is still going because it sells really well.

Are you expecting 8 years for Kubo finish his series? Dude, 8 years is like he is writing a new manga, it doesnt make any sense. 5 years in just one arc is already an absurd!
I don't follow any interviews but what I heard from people who do is that
a) Kubo said he will keep the Manga runing for 10 years.
b) this will be the longest arc yet
c) for him the Visored, hueco mundo and the fake town are "one arc" and that "saga" took 5(?) years to complete
So from all those statements on should except Bleach to keep going for 9 years and if anybody in Jump can stretch it this long than it is Kubo.

Gintama and Toriko beating both One Piece and Naruto really is a surprise, Gintama being at the top caught me by surprise. Those rare occurences definitely are refreshing.
Happy to see Nisekoi still doing so well, if Hq continues to do so well too I'm going to check it out.

And looks like Pakky is the next one to go, never really cared for that one so I don't mind. Pajama still seems to be in danger, I could see it dropping to the bottom 5 and end up being cancelled but besides Pakky there doesn't seem to be a series that's most likely to end soon.

What I meant was why isn't it called 2012 instead, genius.

Keep cool wintercry, like alpha mentioned it changes automatically through a bot. Changed the title to 2012.

Gintama and Toriko beating both One Piece and Naruto really is a surprise (...)
It's not surprising to those who are up to date with Gintama. The truth is, current Gintama arc is better than any arc in One Piece/Naruto/Bleach and even Hunter x Hunter, basically it's the best arc in any shounen ever. I would be surprised if it didn't show in the WSJ ranking. And truth be told, average Gintama chapter is still better than even the best chapters of OP/Bleach/Naruto but that's just my opinion.

Interesting. So Kubo point of view is different, what he calls an arc is a saga with a lot of arcs. Ok, on this train of thought, maybe it can take 5 years.

I agree on Gintama's current arc is better than Naruto and Bleach (not sure about One Piece), but it is not better than Hunter's arc.

Not too happy about Bleach's ranking but I am happy for Gintama. As for OP being below top 3, the chapter -8 ago was pretty boring IMO.

Wish that Beelzebub ranked higher. Shonen jump Alpha should do a TOC lol. Even if its just 5/6 mangas only.

BTW isn't the TOC up to chance? Since most readers vote but only a certain number of them is counted? Say if the Shonen Jump people picked out 1000 votes that had HXH as their rank 1 on 700 of them. That confirms HXH as Rank 1 for that week right? There is also the votes other mangas get in the reader's top 3. Say most people pick OP as their 2nd choice. It gets 2nd right? Same for 3rd place.

Japanese are really mysterious, putting one of Punk Hazard chapter after the first color page when Mermaid island never did.
I guess it's time to recatch to Gintama.
@Drmke I think it is Ohana mistake, it happens quite often a serie miss in his posts
I'm curious to see its place too since it seems new series are doing good compare to veteran one for once.

Interesting TOC. I dunno the last time One Piece got that low. I don't think it's since that one time the manuscript got given in late and it was put really low because of it.

Gintama makes sense, as you guys said. Pakky looks like it's not gonna last.

As for how long Bleach is gonna last, realize that the editorsmay try to get him to end it faster than he wants, to keep the author's reputation up and keep the series from declining and encourage a new series by the author. But Kubo can probably do what he wants at this point. And it's lost its luster, and isn't really going to be increasing unless Kubo really comes up with an interesting plot. That or he goes a Jojo's Bizarre Adventure route and just changes the main character and the story.

Awesome, Gintama's first. This arc was epic so it makes sense. I'm kind of surprised One Piece is out of the top 3 but that probably won't last.
Also glad that Nisekoi is still doing good in the TOC, I'm loving the series right now.

As for all the Bleach talk, I doubt Jump is going to force Bleach to end unless it drops really low (both in TOC and volume sales). Even if it does, they'll probably have hope he can pick it up or something. Though I'd rather have it end, stretching out a series for too long isn't good and imo Bleach is already boring enough.

clydu94
April 27, 2012, 09:41 PM
Bleach is too good to end. Sales are the most important thing about a WSJ Manga and you all know how Bleach is doing in that category.. Seeing it that low while the new arc has just been epic until now makes me sad :'(

Gintama.. I didn't really find this manga attractive, the first episodes bored me as hell. Should I catch up ?

One Piece being 4th.. When was the last time that it wasn't in the Top 3 ?

Naruto.. Now i don't understand.. This whole war is the biggest mess I've ever seen in a manga yet but it gets such high ranks..

wintercry
April 27, 2012, 11:18 PM
Gintama is more interesting than Bleach. Especially the current arc; every chapter is hands down amazing. Also, you never know, Kubo wished for Bleach to stay at least 10 more years, but it has now enter its final arc. I agree with Kewl, the editors might've tried to get him to end it faster for a new series.

clydu94
April 27, 2012, 11:39 PM
Nope. Ending a serie who is sure to doing well in terms of sales faster than it would have just because they count on new series which are not sure to be as good in sales as the previous manga is a pretty, sorry for the word, stupid decision. Like.. Really. It's a bad business move. And we all know WSJ is all about business :cheez

So Gintama is that good huh ?

Kaiten

What a silly conversation. Bleach is not ending any time soon. Kubo claims this is the last arc, the editors will give him the time to finish it, even if TOC rankings are not what they once were. We all know that Bleach will be around for two or three more years.

Why even bother comparing a comedy manga to action :XD Bleach and Gintama don't have fuck all in common.

Seeing One Piece so low makes me feel slightly nauseous. Punk Hazard is a great arc. Please don't sing the gospel of Gintama to me in response. I've been reading the damn thing since before some of you folks knew what mangas are. I even scanlated the damn thing, all be it briefly. Don't want to hear about it, don't tell me, I don't care :bored

Nope. Ending a serie who is sure to doing well in terms of sales faster than it would have just because they count on new series which are not sure to be as good in sales as the previous manga is a pretty, sorry for the word, stupid decision. Like.. Really. It's a bad business move. And we all know WSJ is all about business :cheez7

So Gintama is that good huh ?

You misunderstood me there. What I meant was it is not ending but slowly laying the foundation to its end instead, hence the final arc. That is contrary to Kubo's wishing for it to last another 10 year. Also, I never said it ending anytime soon.

If that's the case then why even look at the TOC and/or reader's survey? there are bunch of mangas that has nothing in common in JUMP. (Though Gintama and Bleach have a decent few things in common)

Do you expect that the commonality for Jump should be an action?

I based that remark on Kaiten's remark. Shouldn't you be asking him that, not me?

Or if you misquoted that for the remark "Though Gintama and Bleach have a decent few things in common", I'd answer "No", btw. And if it's commonality for the two instead for Jump, then action is a factor to consider.

I dunno why people are worried about One Piece not being in the top 3. Its not like it went past 5 or even 10 (which would cause a huge stir).

I don't agree that OP should be that low though. If anything it should have been low near the beginning of the Fisherman arc. God that was a boring arc till near the end.

Why would you assume that Bleach fans read Bleach, or that Bleach fans read Gintama. Some might, others might not. Isn't it presumptuous to assume that the success of one series has anything to do with the failing of another series? Can you show some sort of proof that Gintama placing first has any correlation to Bleach dropping? Or are we making assumptions based on one being low, the other being high.

I was not actually referring to the TOC though, which is why my post never mentioned the TOC. Prior to my post there was some discussion of how much better Gintama is than this manga, that manga, and Bleach. I was merely pointing out that comparing two manga that have virtually nothing in common is a bit silly. The appeal of each towards their respective fans is different enough that conversation between is somewhat pointless.

---------- Post added at 01:43 AM ---------- Previous post was at 01:40 AM ----------

I actually don't look at new TOC's anymore, I don't read very many Jump series. One Piece and Hunter x Hunter are the only series I consistently enjoy, I still read Naruto and Bleach though. I used to read Sket Dance and intend to catch up someday soon. Otherwise everything in Jump bores the hell out of me.

We don't really worry about One Piece but the thing is that you count it on the fingers of a hand the number of time it was that low in the TOC in the last 10 years so, to me, that is THE important thing of this TOC.
One Piece was also not really well placed in the double cover page issue even if its real place is hard to figure, maybe japanese don't like Punk hazard that much which is weird, but it should change once the recent characters introduced are ranked.

And Jump has 2 really excellent comedies Gintama and Sket Dance (may add Beelzebub in the lot), everyone should read them

Don't read too much into things. You just thought of it yourself; actually, I didn't assume any of that and that wasn't my basis. Though, whether you read both or not, TOC evidence clearly shows who's more interesting atm.

OP is doing great but in the last 10 years? I doubt that One Piece stayed in the top 3 consistently when it was just in the Alabasta arc. Then again it is Japan and they loved OP as soon as it came out.

Also I just realized that the Bleach rankings 9 weeks back was the chapter before or after the new arc since the new arc was a color page and isn't ranked.

Well, there ARE records going all the way back if someone wants to look at it.
Like I said, there was that one time a couple years ago when One Piece was ranked low for getting the manuscript in late.
Between these two sites, they have all of them up to earlier this year.

But it's as everyone said, it really doesn't matter. And it's not likely One Piece is going into decline or anything. I think it's more just people really liked the Gintama and Toriko chapters and such that week.

Why does everybody remember that comment of his but nobody remembers what he said before that one which stated "After this arc, I plan to have a small arc and than a big final arc" and which ended up coming true? The 10 years comment was either just a joke or him stating that he COULD go for 10 more years thanks to sales.

The fact that we are entering the final arc is Kubo's decision, not WSJ's (who would actually prefer that it went on as long as possible).

Is anyone seriously worried that Bleach will end? It's position in the ToC seems rather low as of lately, but it's still a really big seller. Unless the series suddenly drops to the bottom of the ToC and stays there, and the volume sales drop substantially, I really can't see it ending. Plus the recent arc has actually been pretty good when compared to the last one. And the pacing is actually pretty fast by Bleach standards.

crimsonlink310

Almost bottom 5 for Bleach in real TOC. >.<^ I guess its because of all the series getting color pages that usually rank lower. "Bad Recognition" (chap 482) was a decent chapter.

Kubo was probably late on his deadline since we only got 16 pages this week so if editors really choose how the Toc is ranked they might have ranked him lower for that. Aw well, its only once so far, though I'm worried about Reborn! being in the bottom 5 for 2 weeks now. Still Reborn! sells a lot of volumes like Bleach.

Kubo was probably late on his deadline since we only got 16 pages this week.

Bleach had the same amount of pages this week that it has had ever since this arc started (17), the only difference this week was that Kubo "wasted" two pages on a huge double spread (which obviously counts as two pages). So it's the same amount. The only exceptions are when he gets color pages.

So, three new series are starting now right? If inumaru dashi ends next week that makes 4 series ending in a row, so I'm guessing another story is starting which makes 4 new, or it just ends without a new series coming a while after. I don't know if that happens in WSJ since I'm still a bit new to the TOC, but from what I've seen a new series comes after a series has ended. I'm not sure if it's for all or just for cancelled series though.

The dude fromc Bastard! also was a hentai artist.. Magical Taruuruto kun mangaka too.. (But I think he first did Taruuruto, then hentai), I am sure there are a number of mangakas that first did some dojinshi and then did manga for JUMP other magazines.

Diversity is the main force of Jump i would say :hee

You people make me wanna read/watch that Gintama..
Watch it, the anime does a finer job of bringing out its humor. Check out the reviews, anyone who actually sat through
at least 10 episodes of the anime will tell you how fine it is, like wine, except way better.
It's one of the best anime/manga out there that you don't know what you are missing.

Really glad that Gintama is top, whatever the arc is, it's about time.

I really don't care about Bleach, that thing is never going to get cancelled.
Not until the sales plummet and the story really goes to shit.

Punk Hazard is a great arc but I can get why op is placed low, it was pretty messy at the start.
but still, nothing can compare to how messy Naruto is.
Yes, I don't care about Naruto's war anymore, I just want it to end.

That's rather amusing, but yeah it shouldn't be entirely surprising that some artists have backgrounds as hentai artists. Though after this bit of news, some things make more sense.

I like the drawing but it's kinda funny that a hentai artist might work for Jump/Shueisha :amuse

What about doujinka? Hoshino Katsura of D.Gray-man drew Naruto doujinshi before publishing her oneshots. I think Amano Akira drew doujinshi as well. It would be neat to see how much "unofficial" experience Jump mangaka had before making it big. If anything else, it makes for good practice!

There are quite a few mangaka or manhwaka who do their own doujins.

Schabrak
May 07, 2012, 04:59 AM
Doujinshi let them try out their own style, while working as an assistant, they've got to follow their boss's style. There are without a doubt some ex-hentai artitist working for Kondansha/Shogakukan and their independent subsidiaries. Masahiro Itosugi or Oh! Great have obvious ties to that industry.

Well I can't think of any specific examples but it doesn't really strike me as odd especially when you remember that this is a business and the author is more than likely going to want to do whatever will pay the bills.

You would think with it being an already established authour and having done so well in the TOCs that they would print a LITTLE more. But obviously, volume 1s usually get a small first printing, then it gets reprinted a lot. Definitely good news for the series.

Everyone knows that rom-con can only last ten volumes so that they can be canceled quickly so that more action mangos can be started so that the fanboys can be happy. Science has proven it :cookiehand

Sports mangos can only last 12 volumes unless it is Eyeshield 21. Kuroko doesn't really exist. It was made up online.

So you just extended it another ten volumes to not look as bad as you did before? Of course it's not easy to make them last for more than a decade, but how do you imagine they could extend their romance much longer? That's same same problem as with every other manga too. Action/adventure tend to prolong their end with an endless amount of fights, do you want romances crushed and broken numerous times in a manga?

It would make things so much easier if they had a chapter number next to the ranking so that readers would know which chapter did good or bad. All this -8 chapters crap makes things complicated when you factor in color pages and whether or not to include them when you count back -8 chapters.

Pajamas's getting a cp, nisekoi doing well and now a new romcom... Is jump going back to the past?

Jump's audience is aging, much of their vaunted young teen audience are now older teens. The success of One Piece seems to have lured more older readers to Jump, with readers over 19 now making up a significant part of their audience. The editors choice in new series reflects this, with more series that would appeal to older readers and less fantasy manga, which generally appeal most strongly to younger teens.

Here are demographics for 2011 (http://adnavi.shueisha.co.jp/mediaguide/2011/m_comic/w_jump/index.html). Compare how much younger the average reader was in 2010 (http://adnavi.shueisha.co.jp/mediaguide/2010/m_comic/w_jump/index.html). The media guide for 2012 is not yet out.

The high placement of Nisekoi and HQ is probably the work of older readers. My guess is Naruto can thank Sasuke for reaching number one, Sasuke heavy chapters usually rank first. It should be noted that the entire top five, with the exception of new series HQ, are extremely popular with female readers. Naruto, One Piece, Gintama, and Toriko have large female followings, a market Jump has been exceptional at exploiting.

Nice that Gintama is still doing well. I'm pretty sure it'll stay in the top 5 for a while, the current arc is awesome. Naruto being first is somewhat expected since both Sasuke and Itachi are in it, they both do have the biggest fan bases in Naruto. Though I doubt it'll stay in first. I'm not sure. The first chapter doesn't really have ecchi; it is even less than Pajama.

I just did a quick look at Pixiv's Super Comic City 21 tag for Toriko, and about 50 doujinshi circles shows up, all of them either BL or BL overtones. I dunno if that has any value to it, it certainly is more than Beelzebub.

But to be honest, if its in Jump and it sells well, there is going to be a decent sized fujoshi fanbase and BL attached to it. KochiKame seems to be the only exception. :XD

lol. I love how obsessed people here are about statistics, be it sales or demographics. Just google Toriko doujin and you'll get your answer, one that says far more about the series than a meaningless percentage of readership statistic. There is more to the world, and more to discussion, than these silly little statistics that get thrown about this thread.

:XD

Men running around the world, bursting with muscles, alone, seeking adventure, without a woman in sight seems like fertile ground for BL to me.

I for one, welcome our new rom-com overlords. I've been reading PnK and its been decent. Not as entertaining as Nisekoi but the fact its had a better start then a number of previous series says something about the recent shifts. Throwing another one into this mix is going to be interesting.

No real surprise Naruto is #1. I stopped reading it ages ago but whenever you throw an Uchiha brother into the mix its going to have positive results in terms of popularity. Bleach is Bleach so no real surprise by its ranking either.

Nice to see Sket with solid rankings. Really looking forward to the 3rd year anniversary colors for Medaka.

nah, I think statistics would be better to have in this case. Just because some people write bl doujins doesn't necessarily mean it's popular with females :/ it's a good assumption, but that's just what it is, assuming. Even tho statistics aren't always completely accurate, I think it's at least better than basing it's popularity on how many love doujins it has.

And also don't forget that guys could be writing some of those doujins :x

When the fandom is creating a mass of BL doujins that directly translates to a big female readership, that's how it is.^^ Guys could write them, but only because there is a demand by mostly female fans, not male ones.

If you search for Torikoko on pixiv you will mostly find shounen ai pictures, when you search Toriko it will have nearly the same result.

So, if I told you that exactly 21.6% of readers were women this would have some sort of meaning to you :oh

You would in some way be able to analyze the meaning of the data, the implications, how it compares to the percentage of woman reading shounen as a whole? It would not in any way be open to misinterpretation, dismissed no matter how much higher than the percentage of readers for most shounen? Give me a break.

---------- Post added at 11:43 AM ---------- Previous post was at 11:14 AM ----------

While I suppose men could draw BL doujin, I thought it was common knowledge that BL was a subculture for women. While there are male readers, and writers, most slash manga are written for women by women. Most are not even meant for homosexual readers.

It is interesting, and rarely discussed in this thread, how popular Jump is with fujoshi. The art in some series, notably Bleach and Naruto, evolved to keep up with changing taste in bishounen. As did D. Gray Man, formerly of Weekly Jump. Even the male characters in One Piece have become noticeably more attractive over the years, though woman have a more prominent role in One Piece than is the norm for Jump action. Reborn was driven by bishies from the very start, same with Prince of Tennis, of course. There are some recent exceptions, Magico clearly does not have fujoshi in mind. But the average Jump manga is very BL friendly, whether intentionally or not.

Don't exagerate you don't need a thesis to compare 2 percentage. And I think your second post resume perfectly the initial perplexity, Toriko does not fit in this evolution at all.

Kaiten
May 10, 2012, 12:11 PM
20.2% of Weekly Shounen Jump readers are female. 15.4% of Weekly Young Jump readers are female. Other than the obvious, WSJ has a higher percentage of female readers than WYJ, what do those statistics have to say? Do they explain empirically why more women read WSJ, or would some sort of assumption have to be made about what appeals to whom? Can you tell what series those 15.4% are buying WYJ for, or what series that 20.2 percent buy WSJ for? In the end aren't those numbers not just a little boring?

Even if we knew the percentage of female readers for individual series, what would learn by comparing them? That one has a higher proportion than the other? How would we account for the difference? Do we make assumptions about the appeal of plot, art, pacing, and genre?

As I said before about Toriko: big muscles, adventures, long lonely nights, relentless machismo, no women. What would not appeal to those who enjoy slash manga?

Galactic Tomahawk
May 10, 2012, 12:29 PM
There's a lot of overlap in what attracts men and women to Shonen manga when you get down to it; it's not a one or the other situation with action VS bishounen here.

And analyzing media trends (like doujinshi) is a good way to collect data, sometimes it's better than statistics since it's easier for someone to fudge their answers on a survey than their own person habits.

Crude
May 10, 2012, 03:34 PM
Toriko always seemed more likely to appeal to gay men rather than fujoshi in my opinion. Typically fujoshi tend to like more bishonen characters, pretty boys with skinny bodies rather than big muscly men. However I have heard that Dragon Ball has a pretty big female following, so I guess them liking Toriko makes sense :D

Schabrak
May 10, 2012, 04:49 PM
Gay man like muscles, fujiyoshi lean beautiful men? You generalized a whole group of readers, that's never a good thing to do. Maybe it's because there are just not many big muscle manga released nowadays, which limits the number of sensational manga to make bishounen manga from.

I don't like that cover.

I hope Nisekoi actually lasts tho and it won't disappoint.
While that guy who said that love-com won't last more than 10 volumes is pretty biased, I can see where he is coming from since there really are limitations to what you can do in love-com without turning it into something else.

Keep bleach at the bottom for a while and maybe kubo will put more heart into it, let's see if this together with the bad ratings
from fb arc and falling volume sales are enough to motivated him to actually think before he writes his stuff.
Sure, this arc has been good but it's only good by Bleach's standards.

Naruto is one again, probably because two Uchihas are exploding their fanbases.
Like always, glad to see Gintama up, since everyone is talking about it..I guess it's one of the serious arcs.

Interested to see how reborn! will do in the future, will it propel back again as always or stay down( which I highly doubt ) .

All this talk about Toriko and fujoshi is making me LOL. In all seriousness though, I don't think any other magazine is as BL/female oriented as JUMP is. For instance they doesn't use gravure idols and AKB48 on their covers which are obviously aimed to get the attention of heterosexual guys. On the other hand fujoshi readers will be less willing to buy a cover with a bikini clad woman on it when they're in a certain manga primarily for the male characters.

Going back to Toriko, I think it's more likely to attract fans of bara instead of BL.

I don't have super high expectations for this but that's actually a pretty cool cover
Same here. The art style is my cup of tea so I'll keep a mental note to check this one out.

If the guy's done THAT many one-shots of it that he can make a whole "volume 0" then he's got to have thought about it a little. Toriko has 2 one-shots before it started... I know a few other popular series had at least one. I know Ao no Exorcist did.

They are 2 oneshots of Toriko. You probably know the second one from 2007, that was collected in Toriko Gaiden and on which the movie is based. The other one is from Jump 2002 issue 6-7 and is collected in Gourmet Hunting Book.

Right. Two one-shots of Toriko. I'll probably scanlate them at some point. I've been trying to get a project of HQ volume scans done. And I'll maybe do the Toriko Gaiden book when I get to where it was published at volume 6.
That and I wanna do Seikimatsu Leader Den Takeshi! and Ring. The other two series Shimabukuro did. I'm still reading Takeshi, it's an extremely looong series that started around the same time as One Piece. It's 300 something chapters I think. I've only read like half so far and I bought the series a year ago.

There're probably more series in Jump that were popular and ran for a long time that never got scanlated or licensed. Takeshi's the biggest one I know of. Might be because it only ever got a Jump Super Anime Tour OVA for an anime, and never had a series. Anyone know of any others?

Weird, what's with the lack of Gintama color pages this year? This week is chapter 400 and in the past Gintama normally celebrates anniversaries a few chapters before the 00th chapter. I wonder what the deal is? The series has been riding high as of late, so that can't be the reason....right?

It seems that the protagonists name in Sensei no Bulge is now Astro.

Judging by the title and the preview page the title - 戦星のバルジ - Sensei no Bulge is most likely refering to the planet as Bulge and not the protagonist. So the title would be something like Fighting Planet Bulge ot basically anything to do with the planet Bulge being in conflict.

The preview page also says that the protagonist is on a planet full of war which further supports the theory that the title of the series is talking about the planet and not the protagonist.

Due to Nisekoi #01 being completely out of stock everywhere, it will have a reprinting on May 28th.

The anniversaries aren't always celebrated on the same chapter, sometimes they are earlier, sometimes later. From the top of my head, One Piece got a colourspread for chapter 401. So I think that one way or another we are getting our colourspread. I mean, Sorachi gets his anniversary. Yes.

That's impressive to be that dedicated; however, it's really not that different from OP's fans obsessively buying every volume available. Still, to be willing to go that far for a series, even though your individual contribution won't affect things in the long run (yeah, I know that if enough people were as dedicated as our 30 copies of a volume friend here, it could affect the sales, and lifespan, of a manga, but...), is both quite impressive and quite disturbing...

Just caught up to Pajama, and I have to admit, the series started off as pretty slow, but things are looking much more interesting as of now. And... is it just me, or....

was chapter 9 a bit of a wham episode for you guys?? 'cause honestly, I did not expect Jump to actually publish that almost rape scene in full detail. I had to admit, that was impressive. I wonder if there was any explicit rape/almost rape scene ever published in Jump. Maybe Hokuto no Ken has one when it ran in WSJ????

I saw this on 2ch and thought it would be funny to post here. This is how you truely support a new series you want to survive in Jump.

He purchased 20 copies of Nisekoi and plans to continue doing it for every volume :hip

There was also a guy several years ago who would purchase 30 copies of Busou Renkin everytime a new volume was released....... found the pics!

I only looked at that chapter because of what you said and
that was a pretty lax almost rape scene. I admit it was slightly strange to see that much hinting at rape in the current Jump but I''s and Video Girl Ai were considerably more explicit by any stretch of the imagination. That's about what I'd expect to see for a series in Jump.

There are two internet radio shows (?) that are uploaded in NicoNico Douga. They are about two people just discuss about their opinions and prediection on every Jump series in the issue and they are uploded in weekly. But, these radio shows (?) are in Japanese (since it is recorded by two Japanese men), I recommed these two programs for people who can understand Japanese (of course you need the account from NicoNico in order to listen to them). I listen to these every week and I am pretty enjoying them.

I actually enjoy Pajama too, so far it's been a very good series. A little more serious and emotionally raw than has been the norm for recent Jump manga. And actually quite well written, a series I'd actually recommend. I also enjoyed Dogashi Kaiden, Hamada's previous series, and had been really excited for his return. I'm glad to see it is doing pretty well so far. I'm glad so many series ended or were canceled recently, it give Pajama a better chance of lasting.

I'm hoping Koisome Momiji is translated soon, not that I have high hopes, but I'd still like to try it. I'm not really that interested in Bulge or Psi, if they are translated I may give them a try anyway.

I was a little surprised to see even attempted implied rape in today's Jump. Video Girl AI and I"S were from a different day and age, anything racier than panty shots had seemingly been purged over the last five years, maybe even longer.

Jump seemingly is allowing a lot more fanservice again; Nisekoi has even featured nudity recently, albeit with the tiniest whiffs of steam covering certain key body parts. Nevertheless, it was still as racy as anything from To Love Ru.

Well, perhaps the reason for my surprise is that I've never seen or read those series (VGA & I"s) is because I was too young to know about them. So I suppose it's not a surprise for fans around my age to be that surprised with that scene. Now I'm wondering where that chapter of Pajama's will rank.

Pajama first chapters did not really interested me so I stopped reading it rapidly. Nisekoi also tired me. I guess I'm not a jump romcom guy. So I'm not really looking for a 3d one.
As for Bulge, given that Zoo was quite popular it shouldn't wait long until it's translated especially if it is well received. HQ which was not scanlated made a rapid comeback once its TOC ranks were confirmed to be good.

It seems to be a good moment to be serialized in Jump, none of the last series since ST&RS was canceled after a few chapters. 2010 curse seems to be forgotten

I really like Pajama. In fact I'm loving it recently. It's a good serie who has some potential. There is less ecchi in the recent chapters and the manga is way better like that.

However concerning this ToC I find it ridiculous.. Japanese people, Y U PUT BLEACH SO LOW ? I can't understand. Naruto second.. This is real BS.

There is that superficial moment where you look at Nisekoi, Beelzebub, and Pajama and realize they have three things in common: male lead has black spikey hair, female lead is blonde, second female lead has black hair. O_o *just realized this* Of course, besides this element, the three of them are extremely different.

I'm happy for Beelzebub getting a color page, it should be the start of a new arc! :amuse

Not too far off, but Medaka Box doesn't really have a secondary female lead.
Unless you're willing to take your analogy to its furthest extent where Medaka is a the black haired female lead, zenkichi is blonde and kumagawa (I guess? It's kinda stretching it a bit though) has black hair. But... seems kinda stretching too far to come to such a conclusion.

One Piece/Naruto
Bleach
Gintama/Reborn/Toriko
Mago/Sket Dance
Kuroko
Beelzebub

The romcoms are undecided since they're too new.

Reborn! is number 1 imo for sure with 90% bishonen male cast

Bleach is pretty high with Hitsugaya and the captains. I guess One Piece too if only because nearly everyone loves OP.

Hard to say which series could be the next goner, HQ and Nisekoi are very unlikely at this point but all the other fairly new series are definitely in danger. Magico and Kurogane could be the next series to go, depending on how the other new series fare.

Don't forget that unless they are small and locally owned, most stores do not buy directly from Shueisha. Large chains require national shipping networks, something Shueisha (or any publisher) is not built to handle. Most of the sales Oricon charts reflect are sales to distributors and wholesalers, copies are going from Shueisha's warehouse to sit in distribution centers, awaiting orders from stores. From a distributors point of view, they do not extra product lingering in their warehouses, only enough for stores to replenish stock. That is why volume 1 generally sells so much lower than volume 2 and 3, everyone involved is gauging demand. In Nisekoi's case demand seems to be exceeding expectations, I expect volume 2 to sell very well.

I've also been enjoying Nisekoi lately. In Double Arts it seemed to me that Komi struggled to create a coherent, linear narrative. What sparkled were his characters. The more episodic nature of Nisekoi has allowed him to focus on the characters and their relationships, the real strengths of his writing. It's a really funny, entertaining manga, and I have also been enjoying it recently.

I don't expect any more cancellations until late July or early August, around the time of the next double issue. One series just ended, two more were canceled, so they will probably go about three months without adding any new titles. I would guess that one of the three new series will be the next to end.

The Pajama no Kanojo discussion here made me interested, will definitely check it out if it continues to do well.

It seems to have been mistyped as a romcon. There is not much comedy to it, after the first chapter or so. It is a fairly serious drama, with a good dose of humor, but definitely not a comedy.

Agreed, even side characters like Raku's friend and Ruri are likeable and fun to watch. So far there's no character who seems useless and Komi found a good mix of episodic chapters and plot development. Not sure as to how long the series can go on but if he maintains that quality I'm pretty sure Komi has finally created a series that has a good chance of bein the next Jump romcom hit.

Btw do you know the last romcom that was (very) successful in Jump? The only two series that come to my mind are To Love-ru and Ichigo 100%

True, there won't be any series canceled soon but if Magico or Kurogane continue to stay at the bottom they're in danger too even though it seems very likely that at least one new series will end.

Magico is average in my opinion and I'm kinda bored of it, I would rather want to see a new series getting a chance instead of so-so series barely staying alive. On the one hand there were series which only got good later on so maybe I'm judging it too soon but on the other hand I don't see much potential.
