I realize I've been off topic with my posts of Gessan manga in other threads, and while I doubt anyone will actually read this thread I figure I should start it. Feel free to discuss Gessan manga and whatnot, and I'll post TOC's and stuff when I have time for it as well as translations of one shots or series I find interesting.

These are the manga currently running in Gessan. Someone who pays more attention to scantlation than I do can update this list with what's being scantlated.

This anthology seems to be more for those who enjoy slower slice of life stories moreso than action manga, though there are a few pretty violent things in there. I myself am interested in Bullet Armors, 6 trigger, Hitoribocchi, Takewo, Lindbergh, and Ayashiya. If you want to know actual start dates, check out the wikipedia (in Japanese.)

Gessan has interested me ever since the first raws came out. I've only had the opportunity to read a limited number of series, what I have read I have enjoyed. I'd like to read Lindbergh, and Nobunaga Concenrto (2012 Shogakukan Award Winner for Shounen). I can't say I am too familiar with the current lineup, I certainly would investigate other series if they were ever translated.

Lindbergh has anime rumors swirling about, so you may just see it soon. If I could get my hands on the first few chapters, I'd consider translating it, since it'd be a nice replacement for Bullet Armors which has all but confirmed to be ending within the year.

Hitoribocchi is pretty good, and Ayashiya is drawn by the same lady who did Shinobi No Kuni, so the art is pretty amazing. Takewo is a cute read, and the color spreads are always pretty looking. All in all, I'm quite happy with my Gessan subscription. I'd like to see some other WSS artists join the lineup....maybe Tanabe since Mori no Naka was a fun little read.

I would like more of this manga getting scanlated, especially Nobunaga Concerto, Hitoribocchi, Takewo-chan, Lindbergh and Tokisaka-san wa Boku to Chikyuu ni Kibishisugiru . For some reasons I actually don't know I love sunday and I would really love to see Gessan getting more attention.

Lindbergh ANIME ?! Seriously that sounds kind of amazing it would be first anime adaptation from Gessan manga (i think..), Koko ga uwasa no El Palacio got some kind of live action show adaptation but I don't watch this kind of shows.
That was second oneshot that Tanabe drew in Gessan maybe she's really going to start a new serie there.

And manga you were talking about in Oricon thread (with getting a good press in 2ch) was Tokisaka-san wa Boku to Chikyuu ni Kibishisugiru ? I had a little hope that it could interest scanlators because it is a manga from author of Rappi Rangai.

Oh right, Tanabe did draw a previous oneshot in Gessan. I think it even got scantlated....hopefully Mori no Naka gets the same treatment, seeing that I did slave over a translation for it. Well, the Lindbergh anime rumors are pictures posted on the author's twitter of what seems to be a character design sheet. He (or she?) mentions that they may be from an anime production? Lindbergh doesn't sell that well I don't think, but as Kaiten has ranted on several different threads, sales and popularity really don't equal an adaptation, or not equal one.

Tokisaka seems funny, though as with Hitoribocchi and a few others, I'd really like to read chapter one to get a better idea of what it's about. I really wish the place where I got my subscription offered back issues....I've only managed to get the issue that contains the first chapter of 6 Trigger. I think Hitoribocchi and Ayashia started maybe an issue or two after that.

Oh before I forget, the author of 'Waltz' is starting a new series next month....though I forgot what it's called, sorry. When I get home I'll post the title along with the TOC. Maybe even Heji-sama will get involved here and post news and pics. That would be righteous.

The name of the new manga from Waltz duo (or this'll be solo project from artist ?) is Vanilla Fiction. I hope it'll be better than Waltz because I actually don't like it so much.

Ahah. Yeah I knew it was Vanilla something. I think it's just the artist, Megumi...something something working alone. I didn't see any mention of the writer when I was reading through the mag itself.

I forgot to mention that I totally agree with you on the Sunday love. Maybe there are less than 700,000 circulating in Japan, but I'm proud that I'm one of the people getting an issue each week. There's just something about Sunday that interests me more than Jump or Magazine. I really only picked up Gessan for Bullet Armors, but I'm liking so much more in the magazine now. I hope to translate something on a regular basis from it once Bullet ends, but it depends on whether I can get my hands on first chapters and stuff. Lindbergh is looking mighty tempting, and my kid sisters really like Overdrive.

Yeah, it's something that I can't describe myself. I'm observing Sunday threads, site, everything that's related to it for about a year know ? Maybe even longer and sometimes I ask myself why I'm so much obssesed with Sunday ? And even now I don't know the answer.

I can only hope that series from Gessan will get more attention from scanlators, so We all could read them.

I'll do my best to promote Gessan, though with no scanner and very little time I don't find that very easy to do. At least I hope to convince someone to scantlate Bullet Armors so there's at least one more Gessan series out there.

What would you like to see translated above all? I'm interested in Adandai, Lindbergh, Takewo and Overdrive myself, though I did already translate the first chapter of 6 Trigger.

------
I've never done this before, so I don't know how to use all the pretty colors seen on the WSJ TOC, but here goes.

Hitoribocchi no Chinrakusha (Cover and Center color.)
MIX
Tetsugaku Letra
Tokisaka-san
Mori no naka (Oneshot.)
Takewo-Chan Bukkairoku
Koko ga uwasa no El Parasio
Aoi honoo
Chirori
Asagiro
Hallelujah Overdrive! (Color)
Asagiro (Appears twice for some reason.)
Yoshioo-sama
Bokura no Captain
Imoto sensei Nagisa
Gin no ou (Short serial.)
Adandai
6 trigger
Bullet Armors
Nagai
Linbergh
Tour du Honya-san.

Break
Nobunaga Concerto
Ayashiya

Issue 9
New series: Vanilla Fiction (Cover and center color.)
Asagiro (Center color.)
Nobunaga Concerto (Center color.)
Chirori (Center Color)

Break
Tetsugaku Letra
Imouto Sensei Nagisa.

That's the TOC. I notice that Letra and Nagisa seem to be on break often, I guess it might be some 'every other issue' deal? In any case I'll do this each month unless Heji comes around. (Wink wink nudge nudge.)

I don't know actually what serie have higher priority for me. As long as even one of the series I mentioned above would be scanlated I would be pleased... but I also think that Nobunaga and Lindbergh now are the best two choices and if you're saying that Bullet Armors is a good manga I want to read it as soon as possible ;)

Is Gessan TOC going in the same scheme as TOC in Sunday ? Or is it complete random arrangement ?

Bomber D Rufi
July 23, 2012, 03:15 PM
Honestly I'm not sure what the TOC arrangement is. Bullet Armors has always been really low and now it's being cut, which seems to suggest that if a series is low on the TOC like in other mags, it gets cut. Though there have always been series under it, and they are NOT being cut, which seems to suggest at least a slight degree of editor favoritism. Who knows. Sunday's kinda weird too, since some manga will stick around in the bottom for more than half a year before being cut. I really believe that Sunday editors try to make something last before giving up on it. That's my thought on it anyway.

I'm seriously considering buying the Lindbergh tanks and getting to work on them. Bullet's ending, Anagle's on Hiatus, and I am on my last raw of Boku to Majo no Jikan. So the only thing I'm really doing on a regular basis is Gintama. What do you guys think?

Yeah Hunter horror, Gin no Ou was a short term serial. (And not a very good one, TBH.) I wonder if new series are set to begin soon, considering Bullet is out and So is Gin no Ou? I hope Moricha decides to do a second series in Gessan, since his art has really come a long way since Bullet chapter one.

Whoa Bullet ends in the upcoming issue?! I knew it was gonna end soon but that's just faaaaaaaaaar too fast! Now I'm not only depressed, I'm disappointed. :( There's no way a coherent ending is going to happen with the way the last chapter ended....

So I was wrong about Nagisa not being on break, but this solidifies my belief that there's a deal that the series gets every other issue, along with Tetsugaku....though wait, hasn't Tetsugaku been off TWO months this time around? Maybe I'm just confused.

Bullet is over *sob* And the ending was as terrible as I thought it would be. Almost bad enough for me to lose motivation to translate it, but I'll keep on the keep on. 6 trigger was pretty good this month though, which almost makes up for it. Almost. Almost. If any solace is to come from this, it's that Moricha seems hyped up to do another series. I really hope he does too. The guy has talent. In any case next month is another MIX cover which I guess is a good sign of it's popularty (that and it's sales), and another good chapter of Tetsugaku. All in all, good stuff.

Now to the pics.

small question, maybe stupid:

the TOC of gessan counts as one of the JUMP?

in the sense, the positions are to vote, or put more random as the magazine?

however, I hope to see some color for el palacio...

I'll upload the TOC with the next issue. The thread disappeared and I'm just plain lazy so that's why it hasn't been updated lately. El Palacio seems to be doing okay, though it does hang out in the back of the mag often...I don't think that's anything to worry about though.

Does the TOC even reflect anything at all?

Sorta. It's not as pronounced as WSJ, but I think it is reflective of popularity in some cases. For the most part things that are in the back of the mag are slightly more likely to get axed than those who are getting color pages and sitting pretty in the front.

Again it's not as cut and dry as Jump though. Some series are in the back in Shogakukan mags, and they still stick around for ages. I guess what I'm saying is, it does reflect something, but it is not a singular basis on manga longevity like in Jump.

So that's how things roll this month. I hope to be able to do this on a regular basis again, but I dunno. I'd take pics but I don't know if anyone cares about those. The one shot by Arai-sensei wasn't bad if not a little cliched. I did like the turn of events at the end though. 6 trigger also looks like it could end soon, which would be appropriate since I'm translating it. >_> Tokisaka-san also looks like it could be moving to a conclusion. Walter's not bad, and defintely my favorite out of the series they introduced this time around. Hitoribocchi had a pretty wonderful color page, and shit just hit the fan in the series too. I can see why Sunday's trying to pimp it out.

Anyway see you guys next month.

I literally just got the Gessan out of the mail, and since I'm too tired to translate Gintama I decided to get this out of the way. I haven't read anything yet so I have no commentary for anything this week, but all's well in Gessan for now. Kirisaki's color page is pretty nice, and 6 trigger keeps on chugging along. I still feel like it's heading to a conclusion despite being slightly higher in the TOC this week.

What I should comment on is a little booklet that came with Gessan this month called 'Gessan mini'. It is a novel sized booklet with oneshots from different Gessan 'Rookies'. It really wasn't mentioned in the last issue and only have a mini blurb on the cover of this one so it's not surprising that no one knows/knew about it. Besides this, it seems to be volume '2', which obviously indicates there was a first one of these. In any case, Koyama Aiko who draws 'Chiori' in Gessan did a one shot, as well as Saitou Yu who draws 'Getsuyobi'. Most importantly is Bullet Armor's 'Moricha' did a oneshot! The name of it is 'Merry Shooter' and it appears to be about guns, Santa claus and elves. Great combination, no? I'm considering translating it, but I'm not at all sure where anyone would get raws. In any case I'm sure no one cares about my commentary each month anyway so I'll be back next month with the TOC and hopefully more to say since I love antagonizing people.

What's up with Arai and adapting other works? Then again...I guess his foray into writing his own story was only sort of successful. 86 pages though? That seems like a lot.

Soichiro Yamamoto is finally going to do a series? He's been doing one shots for like ever. I wonder what this one will be about? 'Notorious Kyouko-chan'? His stuff has always been sort of slice of life-ish, so I guess it's the same for this maybe? Though I wonder why it wasn't mentioned in the last issue that he was going to do a new series? (Or did I just miss it?)

And the last (guy? gal?) seems to be pretty new since I can't find any information on them. Either way I look forward to the new series. I hope maybe Moricha will be back soon.

Meh... I was hoping there'll be anime adaptation. It's actually a time for first anime for Gessan. This year we'll have a five years anniversary so I really hope there'll be at last one anime to celebrate it.
I thought it's strange for it to get cover because covers are taken by series with volume releasing same month and to promote new series (also Mix getting for no particular but it's their flagship so it doesn't count) so it's kind of unusual. Maybe they want to hide it!? Or maybe no... One can dream.

I can't believe I missed this before but Adongshik had a oneshot in issue 2 of Gessan called 'Ebisuko'. Its about sumo wrestling. His (or her?) art is still pretty awesome. Though what's most important is that at the end it specifically says that his (or her) next work will be appearing 'soon'. Not just the generic 'look forward to the next series' message you get on these things. So a new Adongshik series may be upon us!

Makes sense since Kirisaki Walter, Tokisaka-san and Aooni all ended this issue..Tokisaka had been advertised to end for a little while now so that didn't surprise me, but Aooni and Walter really blind-sided me. Though neither were particularily memorable so I guess it sucks to be them. Tokisaka had an interesting message at the end too..rather than 'look forward to Tanaka-san's newest work!', it says more like 'Be sure to watch out for Tanaka's activity from here on in!' Seems to me that he (or she) doesn't intend to return to Shogakukan or something. Hmm...

Also Gessan Mini was advertised in this month's issue, and I'm happy to say Moritya is on the list of artists contributing. Nice to see that he hasn't given up despite his twitter and blog closing up shop. His first contribution was an action Christmas story, and his second a short gag thing. I hope he sticks to action though, his style contributes itself more to that.

Next issue features A one shot by Narumi Amiya and Ooyagi Takao. Takao was the author of 'El palicio' and Amiya did the short serial 'Gin no ou'. Over drive gets a color page as well as Ayashia and Asagiro. Sakoro gets a color page as well. Sorry to have not updated this thing but motivation often escapes me. There was a lot of news this time around though so I figured I'd news dump here since Heiji or some of the other news people weren't.

Yuuki Kaiji will play Nobunaga in the anime version according to that picture.
Shun Oguri will play him in the Live action portrayals.

Is this Gessan's first anime? I think so.

It's basically a flagship of Gessan so I could see it happening someday. Shogakukan in general is slow to get adaptations though. (I guess cause most of the stuff they serialize is low selling so..)

Hm. So Takewo is ending soon? It has some really unique art and a fairly cute protagonist. Sad to see it go.

Mix is surely the biggest manga in Gessan but it's not like it's keeping this magazine "afloat", especially with Nobunaga anime and live-action series, Aoi honoo live-action coming you can say that there are other series popular enough.

Hitoribocchi is also pretty popular, as is Ayashia if we're simply going by stuff that appears on covers or gets color pages often. I kind of don't think Gessan is the sort of mag that was intended to become something really huge anyway. Shogakukan barely promotes it. (Look at the Sunday 55 campaign for example.) It just quietly exists.

Idolmaster O.O

Dunno what to think about it, Gessan is a really nice magazine with manga that I would describe as just "not cheap" mainly slice of life stories. I don't think it's bad (rule you didn't watch you don't make opinion) but it just don't suit Gessan.

Wow, how did I misread that kana for Live as Five... at least the title wasn't in English on the preview I saw. That would have just been pathetic.
