Turkey is surely not Europe at all :) It's a totally different culture, after all.
Even if Turkey should join the EU someday in the future it still isn't a European country.
But it's a beautiful country nevertheless :)
Re: Where do you come from?
then i have to say there is not a continent exists such as europe it is just in thoughts :D
is there any geographical borders between europe and asia?? no..but european people decied (by th efffect of churches in the past) to call the christaina part of that continent as europe...and still people people think europe as a christain part and christian history
let me tell you something, turks (ottomans, turkey and other turkish nations) are in relationship with europe more than 800 years(and have lands on europe, small or big )..in war or in peace...ottomans played a big role in europe history whether good or not whether you accept or not...and it is clear that our economics and relations are more on about europe than asia...but people see as still not as european because we are muslims
cyprus is european and that country lies east of turkish capital, and an island but turkey can not be european, is this logical??
if europe means christian land and history, yes we are not european. but if history lies in the past, we are in europe more than 600 years..
it is bad to say that but nowadays europeans are the one who talk about democracy and who are becoming racists or anti-muslims
like insulting islam and saying that this is freedom of media but the ones did this to jesus are in jail in europe..
you said yourself, "turkeys culture is totally different"..turkeys culture is totally different than china too, so turkey is not in asia too :)
you say that because as most of the europeans you see europe as a land of christian's not as a continent
besides, believe it is not "that" much different than yours....but the difference is very normal
Re: Where do you come from?
Noone from Africa??? :o
Would be nice to get to know someone from there.
Thanks for giving us an insight, Walkie. It was interesting to read what you think.
Yes...I also think at first that Turkey isn't Europe-ish but after thinking of it - even countries in Europe differ much. The main difference would be the religion.
Nowadays the European have some xenophobia against the Islam. I think it's because of the Iraq war and the fanatic Muslimes....*sigh

Hi Walkie,
I have nothing whatsoever against Turkey and I don't want to hijack this thread for a discussion about the EU. However, I've spotted some serious misconceptions and prejudices in your post.
Turkey for the most part lies in Minor Asia. Herodotus knew it, Ceasar knew it, Napoleon knew it and you and I know it, too :)
Noone gets jailed for insulting a religion in Europe. The freedom of speech includes the right to insult. Blasphemy (or whatever you want to call it) is not a crime. Caricatures are an essential part of the democratic culture of Europe and religious figures have been targeted time and again. I can't remember Monty Python getting targeted with death-threats after releasing the "Life of Brian". ;)
You seem to have a strange idea of what Europe and it's culture are really like. However, nothing against Turkey :)

Actually, that movie was banned here (Norway) at first. ;) Yay for old blasphemy laws?
Re: Where do you come from?
I`m from Poland , dunno if anybody else here is... :)
Re: Where do you come from?
Yeah, but that's Norway, Hermie That's not europe you are... different :p not even EU :D
Anyway: blasphemie isn't a crime, i have never seen so much jesus-caricatures or how do you spell it as i have from any other person...
Oh, and it's not a problem of religion, in holland there are more muslims then christians ( any flavour ) and we where considered to be european the last time i checked...
