Re: Otaku Theater: Anime Hangout
yeah maybe Katanagatari in terms of "cool factor" - but that would include Samurai Champloo- though less action and more thinking, I guess?
But hey, I thought Ninja Scroll was also kind of cool, and bloody, and a very bold experience since I watched it when I was 12... Anybody else remember that anime/movie?

I'm in the process of watching Samurai Champloo now. It's a pretty good show
I've seen Cowboy Bebop but haven't watched it religiously. But I'll most definitely check it out
Re: Otaku Theater: Anime Hangout
Neon Genisis Evangelion and Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica. Really Madoka will surprise you but it certainly has an epic factor to it that TTGL had. Evangelion is a classic, mecha, though prepare for the anime to get psychological as well as religious imagery everywhere. 90s anime, pretty well intact. Madoka is a really new, but it is right up there with NGE. Check them out.^^
Covert Gainax advertising
As Jammin mentioned, the original Eureka Seven series was great [not the movie]. FLCL is funny, short and has some crazy fights. Also Dead Leaves[movie], for some other experience, if youi like the mix of "Adventure, Comedy, Sci-Fi, Shounen, Psychological". Or the newer Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt if you can get over the ecchi and weird style. Or of cource the older Mahoromatic series.
Re: Otaku Theater: Anime Hangout
HEY! I was watching NGE Rebuild 2.2
And I was surprised that I had heard a familiar music theme running in the background that I was sure I did not hear in the series.
And I knew that piece because I had it in my playlist from a different anime!
I did some checks and Evangelion really did use a soundtrack from Kare Kano
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IuevF9P5CWA
and apparently I wasn't the only one who noticed it upon further "research" and that the composer was the same, and it was also by Gainax. STILL!!! Why would they do this?? :crying

But yeah, the epic anime scream is the answer:^_^
Some suggestions : Puella Madoka Magica. Fate Franchise. Eureka Seven. I also recommend you to watch Shin Mazinger if you're looking for Mecha anime.

Because Shiro Sagisu is a God? :o
He even won Tokyo Anime Award in 2010 for his music in Evangelion :amuse
Re: Otaku Theater: Anime Hangout
yeah but to reuse music? from a shoujo anime none-the-less that is so endearing and so different from Eva? :/

Hey personally I believe reusing music is totally fine, even the original EVA ED is Fly Me to The Moon :p. Besides of that, as far as my memory serves me correctly, Space Pirate Captain Harlock also reused the soundtrack from older Anime, but I forgot which one.
Re: Otaku Theater: Anime Hangout
EVA ED SHOULD use Fly Me to the moon, for tribute purposes.
I just thought using themes from Kare Kano was a bit off.

I wish studios would reuse the music from Eureka Seven.
Re: Otaku Theater: Anime Hangout
I think same music has always been reused in different films, depends on the content though. If a piece is good it will fit with anything, though mostly there are masterpieces that fit for a tragic and comic scene. They just fit for totally different stuff that it does not matter.
Re: Otaku Theater: Anime Hangout
Speaking of Evangelion reusing songs, I really like how they included this track in 2.0.

It's from a Japanese film made in the 70's called The Man Who Stole The Sun, and I love how well it went with the scene it accompanied in the Evangelion.

Haha thanks for the reference, that was one funny undertaking.
Re: Otaku Theater: Anime Hangout
Apparently every local store that sells BD have the [new] Steins;Gate part II collection (episodes 13 - 25), but not part I (1 - 12). So rather than wait for Amazon to ship part I, I bought the Serial Experiments BD box set. I have not seen Lain in so long, ten years or more, that I forgot to put it on My Anime List:
Overall an impressive set. The HD upgrade is gorgeous, worth the cost ($69.99) alone. The Art Book was a bit of a let down, over 100 pages, but concept art only. No color prints. For some reason it is only available as a DVD/BD combo, including all 13 episodes in both formats. I don't really need the DVD version, but w/e.

I need that one too!!! But that's the old Visuals of SEL arbook isn't it? Wish I had some money to spend right now, moved to birthday wishes. XD Which also reminds me of the failed Despera project. :o :pout :crying Would be nice to see a ABe X Ueda collaboration again.
