I think there's only two sources of commentary of-about the "Types" (OT-Offensive Type and DT-Defensive Types): Ophelia and Irene (and Helen in regards to Rigardo, when-in chopping his arm up). Ophelia when she chopped up Clare's arm, and Irene when she decided to give Clare her sword back and train her in the QS (and Yoki Focusing Ability, hehe). I think, I'm too lazy to check if this is the correct scene of it, meh.
for me, there's a lot of problems, contradictions and confusion, about what's correct, though I do favor that the Types really don't matter (too) much, in terms of what Abilities they have. Anyways, I'll try to list all that I can remember and to show the difficulty, contradictions, on this matter:
01. According to Rubel, Rafaela is an OT rank 1 Claymore, who CAN Regenerate, even the difficult to Regenerate eyes (she merely CHOSE to not do so however, as it serves importance to her, a reminder of her failure to protect her older sister Luciela, and of her goal to rectify that mistake, to De-Awaken her beloved AO Luciela - my theory anyways, otherwise to kill AO Luciela, lol).
02. Deneve does scream at Helen to Regenerate when the AF arrives during their battle with Isley, as it had nearly killed Helen if Deneve hadn't saved her life. The content suggests that this was not a mis-translation, as while Helen's Arm was Re-Attached, her eyes had to be Regenerated, and Helen did reply, that she was trying to Regenerate her eyes back, but she wasn't able to do so. Thus, is this truly suggesting that Helen is now capable of Regeneration?
03. Cynthia's and Yuma's Ability. If it is "Supportive Regeneration", than that means all of their "patients" are able to Regenerate, just not well enough to actually do so on their own. Albiet, I think most-all of the patient though were DTs (I'm not sure though, as I hadn't really payed too much attention to this).
04. OT rank 4 Claymore Ophelia could not Regenerate, but OT rank 4 Awakened Ophelia could Regenerate.
05. Not all Awakeneds can Regenerate.
06. NYs can't Regenerate at all (I think there hasn't been even a single case, but I could be wrong).
07. Not all DTs can Regenerate, Yuma needed Cynthia's "help" to Regenerate her lost arm from the "Pre"-Pieta Battle. But now, Yuma is even better at "Helping" than Cynthia is. Unfortunately, we don't know if Yuma (and Cynthia too, for that matter) can Regenerate herself or not.
08. Priscilla and the AFs can Regenerate very well, yet we've no idea what Type they are, lol.
09. We don't even know if you can be both Types... for that matter...
10. Dauf can just barely Regenerate (he takes a long time to Regenerate, but not so long that he's no longer able to Regenerate - as their is a "time limit" on Regeneration AND Re-Attachment as well. Due to memory loss, and "memory of the structure" is a requirement for "Restoring the Body", both Regeneration and Re-Attachment).
11. Irene's fascinating comment at how OTs (or just she, lol) can Regenerate back a Human body part, but not do "True" Regeneration, where they Regenerate back their Claymore body part. Does this mean that a Claymore can become Human again? Chop off my Claymore arm, Regenerate back a Human arm. Chop off my Claymore leg, Regenerate back a Human leg. etc etc etc.
12. We don't know if Rigardo can still Regenerate (like Dauf), but just not within the time frame of battle, or not. Same with Agatha too. As both Rigardo and Agatha are Awakened rank 2's, whereas Dauf is an Awakened rank 3. And unfortunately, I don't think we know for absolute certainty what Type they are (the manga hasn't directly told us). Though I think we can say all 3 of them are OTs, as best as we can say so. The point is, if Dauf is an OT and/or if Rigardo-Agatha can't Regenerate, then how is that possible?
13. Was Clare merely using "Healing" to close her hole through her stomach from the "Claymore"-NY in ch 2 which punched a hole through her, or was Clare actually doing Regeneration? (Same question with-to Miria somewhat too, after she got "killed" - cut up by the Claymores at Org HQs). And I really have a hard time distinguishing the difference between "Healing" and "Regeneration", as in biology... "Healing" is Regeneration, lol.
14. Miata, in the Agatha Battle, did she Regenerate her hands-arms or did she Re-Attach them?
15. Isley and Riful could Regenerate, but couldn't once they didn't have enough Yoki remaining to do so.
16. We've other examples of Power Level making a difference: Awakened forms can't be maintained when there's no longer enough Yoki (this could explain the small Awakened forms, instead of wasting Yoki upon a large form, they free up their Yoki for other uses). Also, Galatea's, the Pieta ABs', Raftela, and Destroyer's Yoki Manipulation-Control-Compulsion Abilities, Power Level is a major component. I.E. One's Power Level must be greater, in order to use these Abilities upon their opponents (however there is one "loop hole", which is distraction, as a way to allow a weaker user to effect a more powerful target - as seen by Galatea vs Dauf and Raftela vs Miria+Cassandra). The Best example of this is the Pieta AB, it's Yoki Control was able to effect Clare+Deneve, however when they raised their YR to or over 80% YR, they broke the Yoki control over them. Same thing with Undine too, upon YR'ing to NEAR BUT BELOW 80% YR, she too was now powerful enough to overpower or "break" the Yoki Control upon her as well.
17. there's probably more examples, but I can't remember any more.
So... is Regeneration based more upon the Type or Power Level (Yoki amount), or both equally?
------------------------------------
While Deneve is a DT... that's changing... as she's making Undine proud, becoming quite powerful (and thus offensive) now...

As for your main discussion on what gives a Claymore their power:
the Human, and especially their mind-emotions-desires-feelings-thoughts
I believe that the BCs CHOOSE their Human candidates for "Claymorization", they look for "special" Humans. Once they found a "special" Human, they begin to enhance their minds-emotions, such as ordering "Hit" on the family by the NY (and this also serves to acquire them as well, by making them into orphans) and then their training and conditioning of them as now Trainee Claymores. Rubel must have been... drooling over discovery of this psychotic and very messed up Human child... named Priscilla... hehe. He loved it how she verified her psychoticness as she picked up that axe and killed her "Father"-NY, hehe.
So, I believe that ultimately a Claymores (and thus Awakeneds too) power comes from the "Special" abilitied Humans' body, as well as powerful-disturbed-stubborn-emotional minds.
As for the minds-emotions-feelings-desires-thoughts:
Riful quick-wittedly realizes and verifies it to us in the witches maw: ~"Ah, so by intentionally wanting to Awaken, you've become as powerful as you are, Clare"
Priscilla is quite the other great example too.
The Yoma Body can do anything, but it is controlled by the Yoki, but the Yoki is controlled by the mind-emotions-feelings-thoughts-desires.
So, the more powerful the mind-emotions-desires-feelings-thoughts, the more powerful the Yoki, and the more powerful the Yoki, the more powerful things that the Yoma Body can do.
Also, Yoki itself can do almost anything as well. So again, the more powerful the mind-etc the more powerful the Yoki.
lastly, with Awakening we've seen this as well:
What you want or need determines your Awakening
-and/or-
Your personality-character determines your Awakening

I personally lean away from the "Types" as making a difference - as having any ultimate significance, i.e. I think Ophelia and Irene are wrong about the significance of the Types (as seen by such as some examples: Ophelia and Rafaela, and subjectively Helen), but unfortunately there's quite a lot of inconsistancies with Power Levels as well as there are with the Types, sighs. Yagi truly likes giving analyzers a challenge, laughs.
