well he went with what he went with. the other option allows people to pick ones not on the list, so it does the job. the only unusual option is Zan and even then that had a decent following on here, myself included
I voted for Naruto...but I think in all honesty that Death Note is the superior Manga, at least for the first 2/3 of it. It was just so much darker and deeper than Naruto has gone...
I guess I could have voted for "Other", but meh.
One Piece all the way best manga ever, than reborn.
wtf at the results. They make me lol. I voted for HxH, Slam Dunk and Dragon Ball.
I hated one piece about 2 weeks ago, cause I thought the art was way too childish with long limbs and wierd faces.
But after forcing myself to read it(still at ch455)
It's become my favourite manga ever overtaking, captain tsubasa & get backers.
One Piece better than Dragonball? That's just ridiculous. Total tosh.
dragonballs often just considered better on the basis of how most grew up with it, or one pieces notorious 4kids dub.
when it comes down to it one piece has succeeded dragonball in most aspects, other than making the magazines circulation purely about it, and having massive success stateside
One Piece for me. I've read what I consider to be the front runners (One Piece, DBZ, Naruto, Bleach, Death Note, Eyeshield 21, D.Gray Man, Reborn, Prince of Tennis) in their entirety (no offense to Gintama or Slam Dunk fans) and One Piece stands out as being the best series in terms of pacing, characters, setting, plot, and theme. I think it's a shame Dragon Ball Z had the benefit of going first and inspiring so many current mangakas because I don't think it is as good many active mangas out there currently. Not to say it doesn't deserve credit for breaking a lot of ground in the field, but to me the praise stops there.

see you're looking at it as a western phenomenom, which is slightly naive. Dragonball managed to break deeply intomost countries round the world, and yeah, in that respect it's still the biggest jump franchise about.........
well i say that, the manga didn't do as well for some reason, but still did really well stateside. Naruto seems to be the largest manga hit stateside, and certainly amongst it's intended target audience the anime has its impact.
But One Piece still has the highest selling graphic novel in japan, has run longer, and has exceptional performance worldwide on it's side aswell.
so you can say 'nowhere near' but in it's own way it's just as much a hit as dragonball, and a longer one at that already.
so yeah, some counterbalance there, just to present........... well anything to stop me just being ocmpletely opinionated.
The problem with using international impact as a measure of import is that Naruto is not the only series to raise manga to mainstream global phenomena. Death Note has had a huge an impact and if you're willing to look outside of Jump, Fruits Basket has been just as important as Naruto. Domestically One Piece has been the biggest thing since Dragonball. It has it's imitators but as a still ongoing presence it's influence is harder to gauge then Dragonball's.
One Piece, Gintama, and D. Gray Man are my favorites.
The thing about Dragonball vs. let's say OP (since that seems to be the series we are discussing atm) is that Dragonball is STILL popular in japan and the rest of the world years after it's initial ending. While i enjoy One piece I am unsure if the series will actually stay as popular once it is finished.
Dragonball only had 42 volumes (it is a sad day when 42 volumes seems short.), One piece is what already 10-+ volumes past that? and didn't i read somewhere that the series is 'just over 1/2 way done'? or was that just a fan theory.
let's say One piece ends at 80 volumes (it could go longer but lets just for the sake of discussion say 80.) that is a REALLY long series and in let's say 10 years after the series ends I don't know if as a 'new' manga reader i would want to purchase a 80+ volume series.
Yea One piece will be remembered but I don't know if it will stay as popular once it's finished as Dragonball has.
Naruto from a American pov seems like it is just what the 'fan boys' moved to sense Dragonball is over, that is not discrediting the manga at all but it feels like Naruto is a 'fanboy' type manga the way Dragonball is/was.
If i had to just pick ONE 'BEST' series it would be Dragonball, honorable mention would be Death note.
One Piece is still in the 400s chapter-wise. Dragon Ball has 519. One Piece has been around 10 years. Dragon Ball was around for 11 years (1984-1995). Get your facts right. There's a reason why one series (such as Naruto) has more appeal than another (say One Piece).
Lets be honest, One Piece is not beautiful to look at, its extreme in its "goofy" humor and drags as much as it can story-wise (aside from the fact it tries SO HARD to emulate Dragon Ball's feel). It's a tough sell (financially and to someone's interest). And if you want to be an even more truthful critic of it, its just as "shallow entertainment" a manga as D. Gray Man, Prince of Tennis, and Reborn. Naruto is a faster pace, Dragon Ball has some indescribable culture-crossing magic to it as well as a well developed and attractive art style with a story pace that neither drags nor bores (Im talking about manga here, so dont even bring up the anime). Bleach had a similar flare to it in its first 126 chapters but then it slightly lowered in quality, essentially fluxing time-to-time, which is why I say that Bleach or Naruto are the closest to the Dragon Ball phenomenon world-wide.
And the reason for Dragon Ball's lower tankoban volume count is because WSJ demanded Toriyama to make shorter chapters to keep it going longer, thus they crammed like 13-15 chapters (at 13-15 pages each) at a time almost in one tankoban. Its a similar thing to what they had done with Hunter x Hunter for a bit.
One piece latest chapter is 514 so its just about to pass Dragonball in total chapters.Quote:

Anyways your arguments are good, and I agree but with that said One piece is still hugely popular i just don't think the popularity will last with time.
Dragonball does have its flaws as well thou, I mean how many pages are in the manga of people just flying around and powering up lol it did drag out some but the art was amazing and it was a good read so it didn't matter.
I think just from a purely popularity standpoint of 'current' WSJ series I think Naruto/One piece are the closest to 'Dragonball' fame. Bleach trailing somewhere behind them.
