They changed a lot so yeah, I think everything will be more clear when you read the manga. I haven't watched the last three or so episodes though because I just couldn't stand it anymore. So I'm not sure how spoiled you actually are. I can guarantee you that the manga is a lot better though.

For starters, you should take a look at Tower of God and the breaker as charles said, plus Noblesse too.
