Need to add something again. Hidan stabbed his own hand to make the symbol AFTER he licked the blood on his scythe. Nothing happened to Shikamaru's hand. Hidan hadn't licked Shikamaru's blood at all.

When Kakashi had his hand on his mask he was thinking about countering the Katon-Fuuton combo jutsu with a Suiton jutsu. However, Kakuzu's threads caught him before he managed to do it.

About the strings of exploding tags: I think it was to prevent Hidan from running back to their previous battle ground.

Prediction: Shikamaru decapitates Hidan, get himself and Hidan's head away...

This may sound far fetched, but since Shikamaru plans to take Hidan as far away as possible, maybe the battle scenes will come from two different places from now on.

I agree that character death would be a great curveball but Shikamaru's not a big enough character to kill. His death would only feel like a shallow attempt at said curveball. A good shake would come...
