You know where to put the shading.
You still have some little problems controling the mouse ( we all had this pb when we started :p ).
I hope you didn't use any blending options on the layers (...

Well ... "brush work" , i kinda made that one up :p what i had in mind was : smth done by simply using a brush.

I think DD didn't smoothen that pic on purpose and personally i like it.
