Spoiler show

a=b
aa=ab
a2=ab
a2-b2=ab-b2
(a+b)(a-b)=b(a-b)
a+b=b
b+b=b
2b=b
2=1

However, since a = b, (a-b) = 0 and (a-b)/(a-b) does not cancel out because it is being divided by 0. Therefore the value is undefined. Thus, 2 = 1 only when a != b.
