    Re: Chinese Thread - 中文

excuse me guys, and pardon me if I'm crossing some line here, but I need some help from some chinese speakers pronouncing some stuff. There's this chinese dish that I love but I don't know how to order it without using some really shoddy chinese or describing it really vaguely. If I'm lucky, the waiter understands me, if I'm not I get some weird looks and the completely wrong dish. The dish itself is steamed rice covered with what looks like raw eggs and has some beef (I have a picture if you want me to upload it). Now, I know know how to say it from hearing it a few times, but no one has taught my how to say it properly. Phonetically, what I say when I order it is "gwa-tan-ow-yo-fan." Anyone know what I'm talking about? Any help on how to pronounce it right?

    Chipping in the fun >.>

yvonnelsw's suggestion is correct too if you know what she means. Another method is if you know how chinese words is pronouced in 4 tones -1,2,3,4, this will help.

Wo 1 - flat sound, meaning 'Pot'
    Dan 4 - means egg
    Niu 2- means beef
    Rou 4 - means meat
    Fan 4 - means rice.

However, the way you wrote it sounds as if it's pronouced in cantonese though. Anyway, i'm feeling hungry as i'm typing this.

    Re: Chinese Thread - 中文

appreciate the help but that sounds nothing like what the dish is called (or what they say when I show a waiter a picture of it). I don't think it's cantonese, but the hell if I know...they always tell me not that many people speak cantonese where I get my food and that almost everything is mandarin. Let's see if this gives a clue to what chinese it might be: when I order chinese broccoli, I ask for (phonetically) "guy- lan" and I always get it. Thanks for the break down though, I just knew rice. But I just wanted to know so that I can know for sure that I'll get what I ask for without having to whip out my phone and show them a picture of it.

    @bean
芥蘭 "guy- lan" is Cantonese but not Mandarin.

BTW, do many people confuse Cantonese with Mandarin and vice versa? (im just asking)

It looks weird when we keep posting in English in Chinese Thread....

    有沒有懂中文的人在?

    Re: Chinese Thread - 中文

I guess I didn't mention it, but I don't know chinese outside the few words that I was taught to order food I like. I'd love to type in chinese but I can't.

But I guess I was lied to about it being mandarin and not cantonese. As far as confusing between the two, maybe to people who don't know either chinese would lump both as one...I don't think many people where I live know that there's two dialects. But if you know one, I think it would be hard to confuse it for the other.

edit: checked wikipedia and they say that sometimes it's also referred to as gailan in mandarin.

    “忍” 是一个非常见的字。

Another famous word used in calligraphy is actually the word above. It means "endurance" or "perserverance".

    哇, Jackitshot,你懂的语言可真多啊!哈哈,对我们来说,英文字比华文字容易打啊,所以就以英文来沟通啰。

    我是新加坡人,中文学了大概。。。能算是九年多了吧。 你是一出生就已华文来沟通的吧。 :P

    Re: Chinese Thread - 中文

    Tanequil你好, 以中文为母语的我英文水平当然比不上你们挖 ^_^
    我刚来magahelpers半年多了,注册帐号之后潜水了好久才发言了几个帖子 T_T
    我学几种语言没什么了不起,为了多看懂外语版漫画和软件而已 ^_*
    为了提高中文版区的人气,大家一边用英文一边用中文聊天热闹就好~
Since this thread is almost fiiled up by english, we had better study more chinese for improving our chinese :P
