    Re: Hikikomori: Japan’s Lost Generation

    Jun from Rozen Maiden is hikikomori, isn't he? This is the first time I've encountered the word, but it seems to fit.

    After a slight think-through, I don't think I understand the hikikomori mindset; I shall think about this more, I find it interesting.
    At a glance, I myself might look hikikomori-ish (I spent a -lot- of time on my computer, like nearly all my non-sleeping, at-home time), but really, I'm pretty social. It's just that nearly all my social-ness is channelled onto the internet. Physical interaction is very draining, so I generally avoid it (especially since finding people who like what I like is so much easier on the internet than in RL).

    That's right, Jun was a hikikomori. But in (Rozen Maiden) Traumend, i guess he's cured. Amazing what several living dolls can do

    Why not finding a local community with the same interest? I'm sure there are others out there who loves reading manga or just talking. I was pretty much a loner when i was 12, but then i tried sport and end up having lots of friends who likes comics and manga too.

    Re: Hikikomori: Japan’s Lost Generation

    I don't see myself as hikikomori too even though some of my acts are pretty hikikomorish. XD I see computer as a passion so I'm only entertaining my own interest. Is that considered as hikikomori too? I'm not totally anti-social even though I might not like to go out and socialize with people. However, I can talk to almost anyone. Give me an old lady, and we can still sit on the bench talking for hours. Maybe because I am a good listener? For me, hikikomori is someone with no clear purpose in life, thus he has to seek an e-life to fulfill his need of belonging to a certain community. Sometimes, these people are just troubled kids that need a little help from this world. >.>

    Re: Hikikomori: Japan’s Lost Generation

    i see myself sort of as sort of hikikomorism, i tend to lock my self away in my room for days at a time rarely coming out to maybe get food or pick up some more pop from the grocery store maybe saying one or two things to my family along the way, but i also have this thing where people gravitate towards me and become my "friends" i know alot of people and i know alot about them but hardly any of them know anything about my self. i guess i fall under the catagory but i have been pulled out from under the carpet and given a second chance.

    Just as a sidenote, if anybody wants to read a manga about a hikikomori, there's one being scanlated by Evil Genius called NHK.

    Kinda surprised nobody has thought to mention it before now...

    Anyway, nice topic rykar ^^

    Trouble is, there's hardly anyone within walking distance, and I don't have my driver's liscence nor will-to-drive yet. ^^;

    One day, though, I'd love to open a game/hobby-shop. There is one gaming-place an hour's drive away, but nowhere around have I seen a trace of a hobby-shop that isn't primarily trains.

    That happens to me, too. It's rather confusing, but I try to take it in stride now. ^_^;

    Re: Hikikomori: Japan’s Lost Generation

    If you aren't "afraid" of meeting new people or social interaction, you're not really hikikomorism - I spend a lot of time on my computer too but despite my deafness I still like to go out and do stuff with people.

    Though it can be hard for some deaf people who have a lot of awkward moments with hearing people.

    I see hikikomorism as sort of "caveman" mentality - cavemen stayed in their caves as much as they could to avoid being eaten by dinosaurs. Only in this case, it's afraid of being hurt by people.

    And it's also an anime, Fabione. The last episode of NHK ni Youkoso was aired in Japan several weeks ago. The ending of the anime's quite alright. Haven't read the manga that much, though

    I think most schooling systems in asia are kinda the same. I'm not saying all of them are but it was also the same in my old school in the Philippines. We just study and study and memorize for the test. After that we forget them. I took Mandarin for 3 years in that school and I barely remember anything. heck! I remember the mandarin stuff I learned at pre-school where school was fun. I barely remember anything from those 3 years. Now I'm in america and I definitely learned much more. They make it so that you'd want to actually learn something. My school right now is a public school, not even the best school on the area but I learned alot more here than I did back in the Philippines when I was studying in a private school. I'm only on the 1st half of the 2nd year of spanish and I can say a tons more words and sentences in spanish than in mandarin. The only chinese phrases I remember are. "what's your name... my name is blah....." and stuff like that.
