But what are things that should be done when scanning manga?

Of course you're allowed to post that question. And here is one of the best places to ask that as well.

What I can tell is that there are no specifications to scanning manga. We're happy about anything.
What you could pay some attention is the quality of your scan. The higher it is the better. Of course some 10Mpix scans wouldn't be handy to others, so mind the size as well, but on the other hand, high resolution scan will be extremely convenient to scanlators as they can make as high quality scanlations as they like.

One minor thing could be the looks of page as well. Everybody expects the HQ scans not to have the shadowing on the pages (you know, the one coming from incompletely bent spread). So if you intend to make HQ, then avoid such things.

To sum up I could say that three things are important: Quality, Size, Looks

debinding is a must if you want to do a high quality job. One other thing you can do is scan at 600 dpi

Tip for debinding... Put the manga in the microwave for about a minute it will melt the glue enough for the binding to come off. Careful not to keep it in too long or your will start to burn it leaving brown spots at the center of the manga.

you could always use an iron. Just make sure you put a piece of printer paper between the binding and the iron or else the iron gets extremely messy

true, but i really prefer using the iron ..Sometimes, the cover text melts (depends on what microwave you use) and it end up getting greasy if you leave the manga in the microwave for more than a minute or so...

since i live in hong kong, its very easy for me to get nice tanko raws (i no this really cheap place where they sell lots of japanese raws XD)

soo if i do ever feel like scanning, i'd like to kno wht kinda technique would be best for unbinding the book?

so far i've seen 3 methods:

1) using a ruler to carefully rip the pages out
2) microwaving the book
3) use a hairdryer to melt the glue in the book

so im kinda wonderin what method would be the best choice? or is there another method out there that is not listed here?

I would imagine that ruler + xacto would work better than ruler + ripping

DO NOT . . . NEVER . . . microwave your manga . . . that's what my friend who scan tanko regularly told me . . . it will ruin your manga since the top part and bottom part can starting turning black if you microwave it . . . at least that's what she told me . . . -_-"

I don't think ripping is a good technique with tanko as well, since the glue at the binding is thick, so you will risk getting your page torn and you'll miss the part in the middle. Best way is actually to use the hairdyer to melt the glue . . . at least that's what I've heard. >_<"

ok i think i'll try the hairdryer one and the iron one. i think the hairdryer one is safer though haha (i dont wanna burn myself)

It spoils the iron by leaving glue stains on the iron. So I rather not risked it. I personally preferred the hair dryer method.

Tell me if you need a step by step tutorial for both hair dryer and iron debinding. I have both of them.

You're supposed to put a paper between the tanko and the iron, so the glue doesn't get in the iron.
