Re: Your word for soft drinks

Unless I'm referring to a specific brand (duh!), I call them soda; never pop. I say coke when I'm referring to the brand and the stimulant. I use the term soft drinks more often than soda though.

Re: Your word for soft drinks

There is a type of drink that is called Soda. >__<

When people say soda, I'll think that they are referring to that drink.

When people say pop, I just think that they are crazy.

One time, I walked into a shop in US and they asked me if I wanted my hotdog with chips and pop. I just said yes. To my disbelief, chips means crackers (potato chips too but all of them are crackers) and pop means soft drinks.

I hate soft drink but I had to take one too.

    Funny how language works.

One interesting story I heard from my English teacher:

And Indian and an Englishman sat together in a train. The Indian sat near the window while the Englishman sat near the aisle. They felt hot and so the Indian opened the window. However, the train was nearing a tunnel and so the Englishman said, "Look out".

What he meant was to be careful but the Indian took the words literally and looked out. Bum, his head was gone after hitting the tunnel wall at high speed.

That's the story of how words get misinterpreted.

i didn't know you were such a sadist; hearing a man losing his head isn't exactly funny you know. I think I have a vivid imagination, must be all thanks to Gantz.

Re: Your word for soft drinks

    I call it soda... rarely...

I always call the soda, by its name. So... Sprite, Coke, Pepsi, Ginger Ale, all that.

Re: Your word for soft drinks

lol we call it here softdrinks. "soprinks" specifically. never soda, that word will never be used to call softdrinks here, it feels too foreign. sopdrinks or calling the brand name, either way

Re: Your word for soft drinks

Tell me if you guys have heard this one before... "Tonic." Apparently, it's only used in Massachusetts or something? I'm like Gr1mmy -- I try to use the name of the drink whenever possible, but if I have to be generic, I guess I'd call it soda.

Re: Your word for soft drinks

Usually I've always heard tonic used as an elixer or fixative, or as a carbonated drink with quinine in it. Kinda like a carbonated water, almost.

    I'm back :3

LOL what a cool thread! Well, in most of England the world is 'pop'. But some people call them 'fizzy drinks' or sometimes even just 'fizzy', like "Do you want some fizzy?"

    XD soda pop :P
A Naruto/Holocaust crossover? Didn't think it was possible?

I beg to differ. I know hardly anyone who calls it pop.
Most people from where i am (northeast) call them fizzy drinks. Or non-alcoholic.

Re: Your word for soft drinks

During my high school years, I had this 1 Texas Teacher who had classic lines such as:
    "Are you packing gum?"
    "Are you drinking fizzy pop?"
He was the only person I heard that says 'pop' for soft drinks.
I usually hear "Soft Drinks" but sometimes I be a weirdo and say "Carbonated Beverage", acting smug. :P
