How do you feel about Unohana, aka "Captain Mom"? We've yet to see her swing a sword at someone, let alone fight them, so people's opinions are all over the place. Personally, I think she's mid-tier at best--nowhere near good enough to take, say, GJ or Ulquiorra, as a few people have suggested.
What do you think?
I love Mama-taichou. She is currently the most mysterious captain, as we have gotten the least amount of detail about her of any captain. Usually (with the obvious exception of Zomari) mysterious characters ae very powerful. Her genteel personality is so cool, at least to me anyway, and for her to be as powerful as the very few things we know about her indicate would be very awesome.
I don't think that she is mid-tier. I would put her up with Ukitake and Kyoraku, who are said to have unrivaled power as a team and are likely extremely skilled individually as well. Grimmjow, I think she could take him. Ulquiorra, I'm not exactly sure how she'd match against him, but I think she wouldn't be completely blown out of the water.
So far, I'm only basing this on databook stats, her tenure, and intuition; so, it's not like I'm dead-set in my beliefs, but I have a fair bit of confidence in her abilities.
welll according to her stats shes one to be wary of. that and if u look at everyone that went to HM, theyre not just any captains, theyre the ones yamamoto sent so obviously she wouldnt go if he didnt think she could kick some serious ass out there! (thats why toshiro aint there! :P LOL!!! man i rele dont like him...)
As is always the case with speculation, it comes down to a personal perspective weighted against the facts we have....which in most cases that call for speculation in relation to Bleach...are far and few between.
What we do know is that she is one of the older captains, evidenced by her long length hayori, compared to those of newer captains such as soi fong or byukuya, who wear considerably shorter hayori. We also have the databook entries that state her power in no uncertain terms.
Honestly, i believe our problem with Unohana is that we just "cannot" visualise her as being some kind of powerful fighter. She is a very tender, nuturing shinigami with healer based powers, two qualities that atypically indicate a support role over a direct combat one. The major thing we seem to lose sight of each time we discuss these sorts of things is that in Bleach, and many other of the current shonen series, Power isn't the determining factor within a conflict. Kubo has had quite a bit of fun playing up the tactical advantages of each unique ability that a character possesses, as a means in which one character might acheive victory over another. The only case he's seemed to go outrightly for power thus far has been Zaraki (although that particular situation might receive attention soon).
So what do we know of Unohana? One might infer unique to her seems to be a calm observer that specialises in analysis of a problem, with all considerations weighted duely. This has been hinted at, given she was able to sense something was off with Aizen's corpse, despite having the overwhelming affect of Aizen's Hypnosis impeding her at the time. Analysis as a trait for Unohana makes sense, as a healer cannot simply be required to wave some specfically focused reiratsu in order to heal another...such a suggestion would be akin to saying Mayuri throws some chemicals together and just happens to concoct some fiendish pestilence in the process. For mine, the role of observer/analyst also fits her quiet but cheery personality well.
We also have to consider her other strong points. It is likely she has quite powerful kidou, given that one would have to command a strong mastery over reiratsu manipulation and control to heal in specfic ways and measures. She could very well derive the majority of her infamous databook ranking not from any sort of skill with zanjutsu, but kidou...which would actually be very cool, as no other captain comes across as a kidou specialist.(Aizen doesnt count here, as he hasnt specialised in anything, but rather claims to have simply mastered everything >.>)
Finally, without knowledge of her bankai, which would better indicate the true nature of her abilities, we've nothing to do but stumble around in the dark on this one. As is always the case with any fictional work, analysis prior to the fact is always at the mercy of the creator's whim or decision to change an original plan in favor of something that will fit in better with other ideas they've come up with.We can't forget that we were due to see arrancar before soul society in kubo's original plan. :P
Regardless of this, it's pretty clear that when we do see her in action, it's going to be hella cool ^_^
I personally think Unohana is being made to be something that she isn't. It's obvious she has power, being a captain and all. But I think her biggest strength is just her healing powers. I think those powers is what made her a captain, not her combat skills. Her calm demeanor is what I would expect from a medical unit leader. I think she isn't confrontational because it's probably not the smart thing to do given the situation. I don't think she is weak but as far as captain's go, I think she is the weakest one. I guess we'll have to wait to see her in action.
I think she should be able to hold her own in battle. Like what Kishimoto said in Naruto. To be able to heal people in battle, you must make sure that you dont die urself so a healer should be able to fight as well if not she will be useless.
Just speculations here, but Unohana could hold herself in a battle, first, let take a look in other members of her squad: Yamada Hanatarou and Isane Kotetsu, both of two, aside being heal users, could use their zampakutous to fight, Hanatarou's Zanpakutous gather energy or blood(I cannot remember which one right now) until a bar meter in his zanpakutous fills totally and delivers a powerful blow; Isane's zanpakutous could be also used to attack, as we seen when Ichigo easily defeat her before fighting Byakuya
Then the most logical choice is that the leader of that squad, aside being a healer, could fight also, because if 2 lower members of her own squad could attack, then she also can attack and defend herself
Another important thing to notice is her Zanpakutous: Until the moment, we cannot say if that form of Minazuki we seen is her Shikai or Bankai, if it's bankai, then we could make sure her Zanpakutous is only heal-type, but what if that form is only shikai? Then her Shikai could heal everyone, thenher bankai probably will be an attack type
So, IMO, Unohana-chan is a heal and attack captain(and if we think about this, she's more complex than any other captain) and could fight with an espada, if necessary, because she seems not like to fight much
But still, all of my post is just speculation, because we can only be sure if she fights with anyone...
Although it is not official canon, the vidoe game Bleach Advance: Kurenai ni Somaru Soul Society does list the green manta ray form of Minazuki as her shikai. Again, not canon, but Kubo has had a hand in the video games before and this could be another example of that.
^ Yeah, we can't ignore that. Kaien's Suiten Sakamake (sp?) was first introduced in a Gamecube game.
IchigoSoul brings up a good point; anyone who heals people in battle has to be able to fight themselves. Renji brought that up too when commenting on Orihime, saying the 4th squad is better equipped for medic duty because of their basic training. It's the same for medics in the army. That's especially true for Unohana because she's a squad captain.
Does anyone have the stats from the Databook? I'd love to see them.

I love Unohana. She's one of my favorites, I don't know why considering how little screen time she's had. Plus, her and Aizen are my favorite crack pairing.
But in all seriousness, I read at BA an interview that was done for the movie's promotion. In the interview Tite said that Unohana will not fight in this arc, because he already has her fight planned out for the next arc. I'm very excited about this. Cosidering her stats, she's like a beast, and it would be a waste to not see her get some action.
The quiet ones are the ones that u always have to watch for. They are the ones that surpasses the expectations of everyone!!
unohana is one of them. I agree w/ most of u. Like in Naruto tsunade said that a healer can never be injured or not their squad is doomed. This applies to Bleach too.
Yes! Lemme find the thread... it wasn't completely translated, but we got the idea... here is the post made by eurys:
Here's the threadQuote:
Also, in another interview Kubo stated that he will be taking a 2 month break from the arrancar thing so he can explore some of the characters' history:
Hopefully it's something to look forward to.
Thank you so much. Finally, there is the opportunity for Unohana to have a serious fan community like some of the other captains. I know he said he's going to look into Kenpachi's history, but hopefully some of the other captains get a little backstory too like Yamamoto (he's legendary, older than dirt, and has the most mysterious lieutenant), Uki & Shunsui, Unohana (obviously I want hers ), Urahara, really there is so many to choose from that's ridiuculous.
