I just ran into the same phrase in Vagabond, and I took it to mean something like what you have there, somewhat like an external group of commoners, (or people who aren't "in" with the group, per se). I'd also like to hear some more thoughts on how to translate that その他大勢 phrase.

With all due respect, njt san, Yeah, but in anime, though?
When Japanese read manga, they DO enjoy the double meanings, so, I am afraid, I cant agree with that.
No, it is not "benched" It's "sit out" as in, "I'd like to sit out for today's PE class cuz I am sick"
Because the coach meant "Saruno have to sit out during exercises"
Also, "benched" is always "ベンチ(入り)”so it can't be "benched.
right, I understand the want to do that, but in some cases it really really doesn't need to be translated, (it pretty much just says the same thing, or makes the subject clear (which is needed in japanese, but in english the translator has to define the subject anyway thus not needed) it creates repetition and for the most part... well, doesn't have any adding value.

as for the benched thing, yeah I wasn't sure, thus the question mark...

I didnt want the freetalk stuff in the releases. The omake at the end of the volume seems like something i would want. The character bios? i would include them if i had them. No one got around to translating them.
