Here's a fun little test to find out how fast your read.
I came in at 300-350 wpm.
I think a big factor in reading speed tends to be how well a person recognizes phrases. So as opposed to reading one word at time faster readers will read phrases at a time. Example...
"I - walked - outside - to - get - the - mail." (read in 7 parts)
"I walked outside - to get the mail." (read in 2 parts)
The meaning of the sentence is the same to the reader but the time it takes to read is vastly different depending on how the reader's brain goes about comprehending the sentence.

There was this guy: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kim_Peek
He read 2 pages at the same time with one eye per page, in a few seconds. Plus he could remember about 95% of the phrasing. But I think it's nearly impossible to get beyond 350 wpm. Even in my native language and depending on the text, I'd be loosing too much context.
Regarding the thread, I can highly recommend the authors Dennis Lehane and Michael Connelly. If you like Crime fiction that is. From Lehane "Prayers for rain" is my favourite and you can't be wrong with any book of the Harry Bosch series by Connelly. :P
Onward to the Two Towers!
That's the worst book in the trilogy IMO
Anybody read the Artemis Fowl series here?
Yep. I've read all up until the last and final one which I havent gotten around to yet.
I'm thinking of reading "Inherent Vice", only because one of my favorite film directors, Paul Thomas Anderson, is doing an adaptation of it. Anyone ever read this book and if so, is it worth reading first...?.
Ey, has anyone read Logicomix?
