Symposium by Plato. I can describe it as food for the soul.

Did you like it? Have you read other books by Harris? I am fan of his work, my username is from the title of that book.

Recently went on a old fantasy binge. Books I read a couple of years ago I revisited. I re-read the Mistborn trilogy by Sanderson. The Codex Alera series by Jim butcher, and the Magician trilogy by Raymond E Feist. I am currently finishing the Mistress Trilogy by Feist and Janny Wurts.

I'm currently reading Glen Cook's Garrett P.I Cruel Zink Melodies.
I really like the whole cicle, but it's the first book I'm actually reading in english, since I couldn't download the book in russian.
It's quite good. It has everything I like: good humour, some mystery and action.

I really did. Normally I'm not really a fan of historical fiction, but Harris's work is exceptional. So is there any other Harris's works that you would recommend?

    ----------------------------------------------------

I'm currently reading Paul Ryan's favorite book, Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged. I cannot fathom the reason why he's really into this book, since as many people have said, it's really contrary to Ryan's conservative values.

I haven't read it so I can't say for sure but my understanding is that Republicans have embraced it as a pro-free enterprise book. As it has anti-taxation and regulation themes.

This creates a contrast between Democrats who wish to see attempts to use high income taxation to even out the income gap and help rebuilt America's middle class as well as use regulations to prevent fiscal catastrophes like the last one; which was caused by in large part by excessive deregulation of mortgage and credit lenders. The republican stance against this is based on their belief that regulation and taxation would stifle the economy and they believe the "Atlus Shrugged" proves that point. Democrats in response accuse them of "trickle down economics" and moon them. (At least, that's what I do.)

    -----------------------------------------

As you probably guessed I am a Democrat though so you should take that bias into account.

I would definitely recommend Fatherland and Pompeii. The first is set in a dystopian world in which Germany has won WW2. It's about a detective investigating a notable death and it escalates from there. It's more of a thriller than Imperium but a definte page-turner. Harris does thrillers justice. Pompeii is about an engineer in ancient pompeii before the Vesuvius eruption. It's more similar to Imperium and Lustrum, it has that same ancient rome feel to it. I would recommend that if you were still looking for something with a similar vibe.

I'm trying to read Miyamoto Musashi's Book of Five Rings...

It's really a training book, and if you take it into context, you'd have to maybe, pause and meditate after every three sentences to get the full experience of the book, lol. So... I'm still in the first few paragraphs...

I'm recommending Spinoza's Ethics, so that one can read, get a hold of the book and enlighten me about it. It's above my level, unfortunately

Lately, I have finished reading The Unbearable Lightness of Being, and then, Fear and Trembling. Former was easier to read and fun, while the latter certainly improves your understanding of the faith concept.

I recommend you read what others have said about it, as well as a general review around his philosophy. It can be difficult with Spinoza, he is one of the philosophers-scientists, which are harder to understand for me since the ones that have a more artsy aspect to their writing(Plato, Nietzsche) are more understandable to me.

Read up on the history of the period he is writing in, historical conditions, religion, Holland at the time and so on.

Re: The Great Books! ( And What Are You Currently Reading? )

Jeez, so many intellectual readers around. As a reader of trashy novels I feel out of place...

    ---------------------------------

Some of the novels I recently read were....

Cold Days by Jim Butcher (Dresden Files Series #14)

An wonderful novel. The formula for these books in general is just so great. Take endearing and witty characters, throw them in front of an eminent disaster(or three), and just enjoy the ride.
Spoiler: There is one thing though... show

Blinding Knife by Brett Weeks (Lightbringer Series #2)

Good book but it suffered a little from the classic fantasy novel ailment of spending too much time fleshing out the less interesting character perspectives. Still, there is was a lot of good reading to enjoy here.

The Iron Jackel by Chris Wooding (Katty Jay Series #3)

This continuation of this Firefly-esque steam punk series was a little bit of a letdown for me. It came across as much more lighthearted than the last book, too much so IMO, and what character drama there was felt recycled from previous books.
