understandable. heres a method i use to use when i was younger before getting into fights, i'd be all nervous almost trembling, but i knew that no matter what i had to throw and land the first punch...actually my situations sound alot different than yours. just know that when you don't direct your anger at the people you should the people who shouldn't and yourself will be affected by your anger. people tend to direct their anger on the closest to them because their afraid to direct it at people who they don't know will happen after that.
Not really, my parents know i am obsessed with languages and am majoring in foreign language, so reading manga is kinda like practice, I read manga in english and then compare it to the japanese some of the time and see if i can get the meaning by reading it. It's very fun, and i can learn new kanji too! Most people don't know I like it, but it wouldn't be embarrassing to me if they did, it just never comes up. I don't think the people I know and work with would have anything against it... and if they do they're just missing out...

Most of my friends actually like anime and manga ^0^ Which Im thankful for...
My parents on the other hand....
Ironically the only person who knows i read manga is the person i know who hates it the most.
He does fine art and laughs at most of the character designs, but doesn't give me any flak for reading it thankfully.
Most of the people around me knows that I'm watching Anime and reading Mangas and neither do my parents nor my friends go on about it. Well yeh one of my mates refer me as an Animewhore but he's watching more than me so he's not doing any harm lol. :P
I think more people would be surprised that I am a fan of Anime/Manga when they meet me. I usually get asked if I play football (American that is).
People care either way? I generally find that those who i know that don't like anime or manga still like the more generic ones, like naruto and death note, and the ones who do like it talk about it. noone hates on it, it's just like background noise that occasionally becomes a conversational point
my parents used to threaten me with various things such as terminating the internet connection because i read manga and watch anime too much
but now i guess they're tired of doing that already and just leave me alone as long as i did the chores that they gave me
my friends are not really the type to read manga or watch anime plus they think it's childish so i don't really have anyone to share my interests with so that's why i usually hang around in forums like mangahelpers ^^
Well. Only times I hear about my hobby, is when we with small group of friends occasionaly play poker at the weekends. We tend to tell shit jokes and otherwise get on each others nerves, and every time I say something like that, all I get in response is "shut up and just go watch your tentacle porn" ^^ So there is no actual flak about it, just joking. Though there is only a one pal I can talk with about manga/anime. And he is 14, so conversation with him tends to be anoying and always about Naruto or some random little perverted comedy/romance he has watched...
And what comes to my parents, my mom admires arts, and thus tells me to read as much as can/want different kind of comics, to help me improve my own art. And my father was into SciFi when he was younger, so he understands too ^^
i never get crap for it ^_^
most of my friends read mangas as well & the last guy who tried to pick on me outside of school avoids me now (guess why.... i didn'twant to but he gave me no choice)
Did it look something like this, Zeraph? XD
The only place I read manga in public would be the library. But that's because I lean towards my iPod in public spaces--I get motion sickness when I read or watch something during travel.
I get flak for it more now, because I'm 30 (and female). Supposedly anime/manga is for children (OMG let me show you some seinen...), so I need to grow up and stop enjoying it. I just want to smack these people. I love Shounen, especially fighting series, which people find strange because I'm a woman... My husband and I watched anime together all the time, and when my son gets older, I'll start introducing him to my otaku world, lol.

I'll say this much, the least acceptable form of anime or manga fan are those woh essentially fit the 'weeaboo' characterisation. This is perfectly understandable, as there's a limit to any fandom and to be as obsessed or neurotic as some of those pretty much guarantees someone flak.
heck, sometimes even from other manga and anime fans!
anyway.............. nope, still not getting flak. luvverly
