Thanks it is as both you said, there are some little differences, plus the new one has both OP and ED.
I just watched the new episode 01 and I was very surprised there so many little differences that it is as watching a new episode even if the plot is the same. I really liked the ep but I didn't liked the song in the anime.

Unconsciousness is my destiny, my joy but also my desperation.
There is since the first episodes a conspirationist mood floating in the series as well, but actually not much have been revealed. Often I think the series takes a new turn, but the following episode keeps back the characters to our love triangle -- the only one that doesn't bother too much.

Re: Macross Frontier
I feel old even knowing what your talking about. But yeah thanks for the information never would have known about this otherwise. Best giant robot series ever! Still it's been a while I'll have to brush up on someof the episodes so I'll know whats going on.
I've just watched episode 19.
The conspirationist subplot wih Leon is still uninteresting. I wonder why the studio has made a so obvious (caricatural) evil character (chara design, voice acting).
About the love triangle, the end of the episode suggests now a direct confrontation between Ranka and Sheryl for Alto's love till the end.
preview of the next episode make me believe it will be a battle episode, so no progress about the love subplot
NB: I've never seen Ranka and Sheryl as enemies. Ranka admires Sheryl a lot and Sherl has supported the beginning of her carreer.
Actually, the authors are not in the hurry to make this part of the story progress. It takes 19 episodes to make Ranka and Sheryl realize that they have feelings for Alto.
Wild guesses about the end of the series:
If the story follows the normal path, Alto will end up with Ranka. Won't surprise me if it is the contrary although.
If Alto is still alive, I bet he will return to the kabuki theater.
Watched the episode 20.
The series is really for fans. I'm not so aware of Macross, but I read blogs and forums to konw a little better. Basically, I find them weak on many aspects, but the 3 fundamentals make them have a stong fanbase:
- entertaining J-music
If you find the romance interesting and want to see what's going with Ranka, Sheryl and Alto, you will pardon to have to follow of Grace and Leon's plotting something we have not a clue what it consists of and I really don't care.
To be non-spoilerish, once again, Sheryl steals the show. Scenarists keep Ranka from growing up, she must wait the 2 last episodes where she will save eveybody. For the moment, she is plainly annoying (cheap trick from the scenarists).
Contrary to the pineapple cake episode, death flags during the whole episode were finally true.
It was Michel, Michael or whatever you call him, that was quite expected. Weirdly he did not die in a mecha. But the preview suggests a new death flag for Klan going berserk.
Predictions for the remaining episodes:
I just watched Macross Zero and Macoss Plus, but I read what happened in the first Macross series.
If you compare Ranka to Minmay and the heroin in Zero, she should not end up with Alto, but actually I think the contrary will happen (even if I prefer Sheryl-sama)
Watched ep. 21 Sheryl steals the show. Only ten seconds, but normally she's back in the episode 22 that has already aired, but I have not read the spoilers.
Turn out that Leon seems only to look for power and being the head of Frontier. I need more episodes to confirm it. That sounds very plain as his entire character.
OMG! Alto knows now that Sheryl is going to die. Beautiful scene between the two of them.
The planet that is the home land of Vajra at the end looks like Earth.
Speculations: I think Ranka will be the key to cure Sheryl, I don't want to think that one of the three main characters will die in the remaining episodes.
Ep. 23 was the preparation for the final act (two episodes to go).
It turns out as I predicted. So, nothing surprising.
Interesting explanation about the Vajra is as a lifeform.
And poor Sheryl.
Ep. 24 was a well-constructed episode with warming vibes to reach the end. Mankind fate and personal hopes and struggles were very well combined, so I am not expecting less in the 25th and last episode.
Note for myself. Don't spoiler yourself and wait for Lunar Anime subs.
Alto's VF was shot down by Brera and exploded in the arms of a holographic Ranka. Actually, most of the people think he does not die. I would think the same thing, but there is too much to tell in the last episode with Alto alive, so he may really be dead, so I don't know.
For the next episode:
Macross Frontier shall be saved by Ranka yet (thanks to Alto's feeling for her).
What will happen to Grace? Certainly killed.
Sheryl is yet to be cured.
What will happen to Macross Quarter's people?
Is there still a place for resolving the love triangle?
And Sheryl was awesome.

No conclusion for the love triangle. The worst is that Ep. 24 announced clearly that Alto shall tell Sheryl if he stays with her or not after he comes back. If we just have the scene after the landing, it will be over. Damn!!
I expected Ranka to win even if I prefer Sheryl-sama (I just specify it in case of you have not understood ). I wonder what the movie will be: a continuation of the story or a re-telling of it as usual. Even if there are some points that are not explained (What happened to Sheryl's mother, Bilrer's connection with Minmay, other vilains of Macross Galaxy), I guess it would be the latter.
Since there is some incertitude, I have to find a sheryl's avatar that reflects her determination
Final note on Macross: Sheryl/10
